2-Dimensional Categories provides an introduction to 2-categories and bicategories, assuming only the most elementary aspects of category theory. A review of basic category theory is followed by a systematic discussion of 2-/bicategories; pasting diagrams; lax functors; 2-/bilimits; the Duskin nerve; the 2-nerve; internal adjunctions; monads in bicategories; 2-monads; biequivalences; the Bicategorical Yoneda Lemma; and the Coherence Theorem for bicategories. Grothendieck fibrations and the Grothendieck construction are discussed next, followed by tricategories, monoidal bicategories, the Gray

Piggott and Travis (2013) argue that Ojibwe words, despite their flagrant complexity, are complex heads. In order to maintain this analysis, they claim that complex adjuncts inside Ojibwe words must be complex heads formed in a separate workspace before being adjoined to the main structure. This chapter argues that nothing in their argumentation requires these adjuncts to be complex heads. Their analysis in terms of the independent spell-out of adjuncts goes through equally well if these adjuncts are analysed as phrasal elements. Furthermore, it is shown that by analysing Ojibwe words as phras

This chapter investigates phonological, morphological, and syntactic phenomena, aiming to demonstrate that the Phase Impenetrability Condition (Chomsky 2001) is epiphenomenal. The chapter therefore builds on the argumentation in Bošković (2007, 2014). It is demonstrated that the PIC cannot hold in the syntax, as the operations Merge (Late Adjunction), Move (post-spell-out movement), and Agree (long-distance Agree) can all be shown to cross phase boundaries. Morphological operations such as the anti-cyclic merger of morphemes (Late Adjunction) and spell-out of lower copies of a chain demonstrat

Abstract:
Chapter 2 investigates a specific configuration (dubbed “remnant-internal relativization”) in which the head noun and some modifier/complement related to it appear discontinuously (as in the so-called split or discontinuous noun phrases). It is argued that the analysis of remnant-internal relativization is of particular interest from the theoretical and diachronic point of view. Theoretically it can illuminate the long-standing debate between the right adjunction and the head raising analyses of RRCs, providing evidence in favor of the latter. From a diachronic perspective, it is argued that t

Abstract:
This chapter investigates a view of wordhood where words are analysed as complex heads that contain no phrasal material. Several cases are examined where phonological and semantic information points to the existence of word-internal domains, but these domains are argued not to be indicative of phrases but rather phases that are spelled out separately. The claim is that syntax is a better predictor of cyclic phonological patterns than either Lexical Phonology or Stratal OT. The chapter begins with a syntactic account of an apparent counter-example to the ban on word-internal phrases by positing

This volume contains chapters that treat the question ‘What is a word?’ in various ways. The lens through which this question is asked and answered is coloured by a discussion of where in the grammar wordhood is determined. All of the authors in this work take it as given that structures at, above, and below the ‘word’ are built in the same derivational system; there is no lexicalist grammatical subsystem dedicated to word building. This type of framework foregrounds the difficulty in defining wordhood. Questions like whether there are restrictions on the size of structures that distinguish wo

This book explores the syntactic and semantic change of three types of constructions in the history of Spanish and Portuguese: (i) complex DPs with clausal adjunction (el hecho de, o facto de), (ii) complex prepositions/complementizers and complex connectives (sin embargo de, sem embargo de; so pena de, sob pena de), and (iii) complex predicates containing light verbs (dar consejo de, dar conselho de). While these constructions are syntactically different, they are all clause-taking expressions containing a noun followed by the functional preposition de (“of”). This book is the first work to e
