Full text
Abstract:
I believe that Adlerian psychology is a perspectivist model, and that the more perspectives we bring to understanding an individual, the richer our understanding will be. Among the most important of Adlerian perspectives, I include those gained from an assessment of (a) family constellation and other systemic aspects of the sociohistorical family; (b) life tasks, including all those that might be considered supportive of Adler's original three; (c) teleology in both immediate goals and life movement; (d) developmental processes; (e) gender and cultural experiences; (f) individual parts, traits, and selves in movement; and (g) early recollections. Taken together, these perspectives lead to thick holistic descriptions, biographies-in-progress, the narratives of an individual's lifestyle. Such narratives are not merely stories coconstructed for the moment in the therapist's office. Rather, they are increasingly accurate descriptions of the real life that a real person is really living. It is from this perspectivist kind of knowing that a foundation is laid for the integration of other models. Other Adlerians prefer to integrate therapeutic interventions from social constructivist theories like narrative therapy and solution-focused therapy. Like Adler, I believe that making a contribution is the meaning you achieve in life. Like Adler, I believe that the principles of Individual Psychology will sustain me where religion has not. Abstract:
Book Summary: The SAGE Encyclopedia of Psychology and Gender is an innovative exploration of the intersection of gender and psychology―topics that resonate across disciplines and inform our everyday lives. This encyclopedia looks at issues of gender, identity, and psychological processes at the individual as well as the societal level, exploring topics such as how gender intersects with developmental processes both in infancy and childhood and throughout later life stages; the evolution of feminism and the men’s movement; the ways in which gender can affect psychological outcomes and influence behavior; and more. With articles written by experts across a variety of disciplines, this encyclopedia delivers insights on the psychology of gender through the lens of developmental science, social science, clinical and counseling psychology, sociology, and more. This encyclopedia will provide librarians, students, and professionals with ready access to up-to-date information that informs some of today’s key contemporary issues and debates. These are the sorts of questions we plan for this encyclopedia to address: What is gender nonconformity? What are some of the evolutionary sex differences between men and women? How does gender-based workplace harassment affect health outcomes? How are gender roles viewed in different cultures? What is third-wave feminism?

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the application of Adlerian life style techniques would provide greater understanding of the psychological factors which shaped the life of Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway's birth order position, the dynamics and atmosphere of his family, and the early recollections of his childhood were studied and analyzed for a consistent theme or belief system. Biographies, critical evaluations of his work and selected published writing were utilized to provide a basis for a life style projection. This projection was then found to correlate with observable incidents in his adult behavior.

Richardson, Virginia Anne 1946. "An Adlerian perspective on religious conversion." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/291791.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine, from an Adlerian perspective, how religious conversion enables some individuals to make life-style changes. Data was collected from the autobiography of Thomas Merton, and interviews of two men and two women over the age of fifty having had religious conversions at least ten years in the past. The interview consisted of a life-style analysis, a measure of social interest, an analysis of conversion memories, a contextual report of the conversion, and a comparison of before and after the conversions in terms of five life tasks--work, love, community, spirituality and self-regulation. This research indicated that no one life-style type was predisposed to conversion. Change in life-style after religious conversion appeared to correlate with increased social interest rather than with change in dominant goal of behavior. Thus, changing life-style does not appear to require the difficult task of changing the dominant goal of behavior.

Abstract:
This study examines in terms of Adlerian Life Style as revealed through Early Recollections, actual and perceived Birth Order, and Family Atmosphere the personality characteristics of adolescent males who have experienced some form of abuse and/or neglect. As part of the study, each subject participated in a structured, tape-recorded interview and each subject reported six early recollections, dreams, or made-up memories. Transcripts of these interviews were given to a panel of Adlerian psychologists who collectively analyzed and interpreted the subjects' information. They formulated a life style summary for each subject and combined common themes and personality characteristics to formulate a composite life style summary. Results indicate that Adlerian judges were able to identify several common life style themes and personality characteristics. The most commonly shared attributes were expecting bad things to happen, wanting to be special, and feeling out of control.

Abstract:
This study used a questionnaire designed to identify Adlerian characteristics of adult only children. It was hypothesized that not all of the characteristics mentioned in Adlerian theory will be found in each of the only children and certain characteristics will not be evident in any of the only children used in this study. Four adult only children volunteered to participate in this study. The study found that all 15 Adlerian characteristics that were measured for were identified in this sample. Only one characteristic was reported by 100% of the participants-reliability. This study also attempted to clarify whether or not only children grew up with friends significantly older than themselves, have high educational levels, and have high aspirations pertaining to occupations. And whether or not female only children tend to marry people significantly older than themselves, have children at a later age, and have small families.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop an effective formal instrument to assess the Adlerian personality priorities. The development of the Allen Assessment for Adlerian Personality Priorities, AAAPP, seeks to provide a strong comparability to assessing the Adlerian construct of personality priorities as the counselor interview. One hundred and seven participants were given the 1st administration of the AAAPP, Social Interest Scale and a demographic survey. Sixty-four participants completed a 2nd administration of the AAAPP two weeks later. Twenty participants experienced a counseling interview following the 2nd administration. The methods used to evaluate the validity and effectiveness of the AAAPP included: face validity, predictive validity, construct validity, test-retest reliability, multiple regression, Guttman split-half reliability and the Spearman Brown reliability.

Abstract:
This research was a comparative historical analysis of Adler's Individual Psychology, Freud's system of psychoanalysis, and Theocentric Psychology. It was assumed that Adlerian constructs are very distinct from Freud's and are greatly influenced by Judaism and Judeo-Christianity. It was further assumed that if these distinctions and influences could be elucidated via historical research, Adlerian Psychology would seem more palatable to Apostolics (an Apostolic is any individual that adheres to the Apostle's fundamental dogma as presented in the book of Acts chapter two and Hebrews chapter six) as well as more compatible with Theocentric Psychology. Some of the various theories, constructs, and paradigms that were explored were personality, holism, creativity and choice, teleology, finalism, phenomenology, social interest, inferiority versus superiority, family systems, lifestyle, normal and abnormal psychology, comparative psychology, social psychology, behavior modification, group psychology, and psychopharmacology. The author validated his assumptions by utilizing the scholary inquiry method of historical research that employs several research tools, e.g., examination of intentional and unintentional documents and producing audio and video recordings of personal interviews. These tools disclosed implicit and explicit statements that aligned with the author's assumptions for the study.

Abstract:
Adler (1931, 1938) adopted and defended a decidedly pro feminist perspective in Individual Psychology. Without question , he was the first mainstream psychologist of the 20th century to address the alleged inferiority of women and the myth of masculine superiority. During his lifetime, feminism was still in its first wave, its first phase of development. It would be another 50 years before feminism evolved into a psycho therapeutic model. Currently, the emphasis on women's issues in Adlerian therapy depends largely on the practitioner's interest in making women's issues a focus of counseling or therapy. This article reviews earlier Adlerian scholarship in an effort to reclaim a pro feminist orientation for Individual Psychology and suggests a process for integrating feminist and Adlerian therapies.
