Williams, Cecil. "Church Leaders' Financial Coping Strategies During a Recession." ScholarWorks, 2011. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1049.

Abstract:
An economic recession can disproportionately affect the financial stability of churches because their income relies primarily on voluntary contributions. The purpose of this phenomenological study, framed by servant leadership theory, was to explore lived experiences and perceptions related to church leaders' strategies for coping with the economic downturn in 2008. A purposive sample of 20 church leaders from Tennessee was recruited to explore the changes that have been made in church operational strategies in order to cope with the recession. The interview data were iteratively examined by using keywords, phrases, and concepts and were coded into categories, which led to the identification of the following themes: (a) implementing cost reduction efforts and increasing the reliance on volunteers for facility upkeep, (b) collaborating with other church leaders for assistance referrals and fraud detection, and (c) sharing facilities and dividing expenses. The study results contribute to positive social change by providing strategies that church leaders can implement to mitigate the negative effects of a financial downturn, strengthen their financial position and stability, and enable them to provide necessary community support. Financial stability in neighborhood churches is conducive to a stronger community because churches serve as focal points for volunteerism and assistance delivery.

Abstract:

A Shepherd’s responsibility is to care for and guide sheep in such a way that they (sheep) can effectively and proficiently perform the duties that are natural and necessary to sheep. The same is true with leaders and managers as it relates to their followers. This quantitative correlational research study was conducted to discover whether the biblical shepherd leadership model, particularly its characteristics, practices, and responsibilities (CPR), were related to successful church growth. A 45-item Likert type survey was used to ascertain the level of shepherd leadership of 106 pastors in the Church of God in Michigan. This score was then compared with statistical information found in the treasurers and ministry reports namely, attendance, tithe, and conversions that took place at these pastors’ local churches within a five year period. The results of the study showed a statistical positive association between shepherd leadership and the attendance and financial data. The data also showed a negative association between shepherd leadership and conversions. These findings will be helpful to pastors, educators, and church leaders to be more effective in ministry.

Abstract:
Business intelligence (BI) involves transforming data into actionable information to make better business decisions that may help improve operations. Although businesses have experienced success with BI, how leaders of church organizations might be able to exploit the advantages of BI in church organizations remains largely unexplored. The purpose of the phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of pastoral leaders concerning the potential usefulness of BI in church organizations. Conceptual support for the study was based on the premise that churches may also benefit from BI that helps improve decision making and organizational performance. Three research questions were used to examine the current role of BI in church organizations, the potential usefulness of BI in church organizations, and potential conflicts that might exist between spiritual and BI management objectives. Semistructured interviews were used to obtain data from 20 pastoral leaders. The data were analyzed using the modified Van Kaam method of analysis. The results indicated that pastoral leaders perceived that BI can be a useful technology in church organizations. Additionally, the pastoral leaders did not perceive any conflict between BI and church management objectives. Church leaders may be able to take advantage of BI to achieve their social outreach programs. As a result, local churches can have a greater social impact on the surrounding communities.

Fee, Craig. "Causes of Burnout Among Church Leaders: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study of Pastors." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5077.

Full text
Abstract:
After 30 plus years of research, clergy burnout is an ongoing concern; as such, it is important to identify the causes of this phenomenon. Researchers have already demonstrated that internal factors such as personality types, personal mastery, or conflict management and external factors such as role conflict, excessive activities, or unrealistic expectations, can lead to burnout. The problem that led to this study was that more exploration is needed about clergy's perceptions on leadership and burnout within the church. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore clergy within the Wesleyan Church in the Midwest to discover their perceptions about leadership and burnout within the church. The conceptual framework was shaped by the great man theory of leadership and Maslach's burnout theory. The central research question for this study focused on clergy's perceptions about leadership and burnout within the church. Data were collected using face-to-face semistructured interviews with 23 pastors who are currently leading and experiencing burnout. Data collected included transcribed interviews, field notes, and observations. Data were hand-coded to find key concepts and themes. Two themes that emerged from the data were leadership is understood as hierarchical and leadership is understood as the work of solo actors, which were consistent with the great man theory of leadership. The results of this study may contribute to a better understanding of the factors that lead to clergy burnout. The results of this study will address a gap in literature and may result in positive social change for both the clergy and church congregants because the results can be used to come up with solutions for burnout. This study may also lead to new theories about clergy burnout.

Mungiriria, Patrick Kabubu. "What is needed to foster change in the Presbyterian Church of East Africa in terms of leadership and personnel appointments (Kenya)." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1996. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/AAIDP14653.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose. The purpose of this project was to explore ways and administrative means for fostering change in the Presbyterian Church of East Africa in terms of leadership and personnel appointments. This denomination, with historical roots and structure in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, functions now as an African denomination with unique situations relative to its culturally diverse membership. This study was initiated by the current surge in church growth and expansions in Kenya, and a subsequent decline in effective church leadership. The current shortage of ministers and other personnel has intensified the problem and created a style of church administration characterized by 'authoritative leadership' controlled by a few. This has diminished the kind of leadership needed for the broader areas of ministry required by church growth. The current procedure for the appointing of personnel in parishes, in church sponsored schools and in hospitals is also quite inadequate. This study was designed to determine the specific problems and to seek ways to help correct the situation through some changes which can be recommended to the church. Method and procedures. This project was undertaken at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, under the leadership of a faculty appointed doctoral committee, with assistance from ministers and their families from the Presbyterian Church of East Africa studying in Atlanta, other Presbyterian students from Africa, consultants, as well as P.C.E.A. members and Church officials in Kenya. The local participants were used as a project group which met in six structured discussion sessions, each with different foci, two of which were led by church consultants. Questionnaires were used as research tools with local participants as well as participants in Kenya. Church officials in Kenya were interviewed by telephone, with a follow-up analyses by the project group and the writer. The project input also reflects the writer's library research including books and periodicals which were obtained directly from Kenya. A historical study was made of different types of leadership styles and personnel appointment procedures employed from the inception of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa with Scottish missionaries denomination through models currently operating in the denomination. Conclusions and recommendations. This study concluded with recommendations which can be summarized as follows. 1. The suspension of the 'Right of Call' by the denomination in the early 1960s was done without careful study. After making the desired adjustments and changes, this method of posting pastors should be introduced again as a pilot project in certain areas for a period of ten (10) years to determine the effectiveness of this process. The Appointments Committee should monitor the implementation of the 'Right of Call' by parishes, and be allowed to intervene in situations where the respect of the 'Right of Call' is assessed to be abused. The final appointment letter should come from the Secretary of the Appointments Committee, thus reminding the pastors that they are answerable both to the parish and to the presbytery. Ministers salaries should then be determined in accordance with the 'Right of Call,' and funds should be made available to develop those areas which have no 'Right of Call.' 2. Reduce the bureaucracy of P.C.E.A. by returning the power of leadership to the Presbyteries. This will remove the power from the 'head office' personnel (Moderator, Secretary General, and Finance Officer) to local Presbyteries, thus, allowing a more democratic form of leadership. This will also allow a more democratic form of appointment of personnel for ministers, hospitals and schools, wherein local tribes, cultures and customs can be taken into consideration with respect. Allow the office of the moderator of the General Assembly to be more of a ceremonial office rather than an executive office. During the study it was determined by the project group and the writer that the Presbyterian Church of East Africa has been influenced by the episcopal system of bishops which is antithetical to denominations in the (Presbyterian) Reformed tradition. Merge head office 'departments' into 'desks' with similar areas of concern, so that there are fewer personnel in the head office, further strengthening the administrative role of Presbyteries. 3. The church should take seriously its pastoral responsibilities in church sponsored schools and institutions and appoint a minister in every Presbytery to serve in a pastoral capacity in schools and institutions. 4. Consider paying the three top employees of the church sponsored hospitals through the hospital's Boards. Also allow overseas volunteers or missionary staff to work in hospitals for not less than two years in order eliminate the problems created by shorter terms of service.

Abstract:
The problem under investigation is that there is little research about how church leaders develop and design HIV/AIDS education and support programs in selected counties of New York State. The gap in the literature is that there is little known about how church leaders support the educational process for the HIV/AIDS Black community in New York state. The theory of normative decision making was the primary conceptual framework for this research. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory multi-case study was to discover how church leaders managed their HIV/AIDS outreach program strategies. The overarching question asked what programs and education do church leaders use to support those with HIV/AIDS and how can church leaders within the selected counties, provide preventative education forums within their congregations. Data collection occurred through 6 semi structured face-to-face interviews with church leaders in the counties of New York State. Data analysis resulted in themes that included how managing HIV/AIDS outreach strategies increases participation, promotes understanding, and immobilizes the spread of HIV/AIDS. The themes that emerged suggested that democratic leadership style made for successful program leaders and existing program features built trust between the church and those in the surrounding communities impacted by HIV/AIDS. Recommendations for action include examining the structure of an active outreach ministry, synchronizing programs, and increasing resources to manage Faith-based organization strategies effectively. This study contributes to positive social change by religious leaders serving as peer educators and advocates within their church community for HIV/AIDS prevention education, igniting discussions, removing stigma, and increasing the number of individuals who voluntarily test for HIV/AIDS.

Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine agreement between Christian school teachers and administrators regarding the importance of selected teacher evaluation criteria. Thirty-nine criteria were included from Christian school literature and from a list suggested by Manatt and Stow. The populations of the study included participants at the 1986 International Institutes for Christian School Teachers and Administrators and teachers and administrators from selected Midwest Christian schools. An instrument was administered on site to the Institute population and via mail to the Midwest population. Chi-square analyses were run to determine any significant differences of opinion.Findings1. There was a high degree of congruence of opinion between the teachers and administrators regarding the importance of the selected criteria suggesting a core of desirable teacher evaluation criteria for Christian schools.2. Thirty-five criteria, including all 20 suggested by Manatt and Stow, were considered to be very important by 3. Differences of opinion between teachers and administrators included respect for authority, which the administrators thought more important, and lesson plans and effective use of time, materials, and resources, which teachers thought more important.4. No conclusions could be made regarding the influence of any demographic information on the opinions.5. There was no evidence that a teacher's input into teacher evaluation is related to a teacher's satisfaction with teacher evaluation.A list was included in Chapter V of 22 teacher evaluation criteria which were mutually important to Christian school teachers and administrators.

Abstract:
Leadership plays a significant role in the advancement of the church, the followers, and the community that the church serves. If the church fails to train leaders, growth within the church becomes hindered, and its mission becomes aborted. The problem researched in this study is the declining support church leaders are receiving from the community. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore church leadership effectiveness in meeting the expectations of followers, the local church community, and the church. The target population consisted of 3 nondenominational church leaders located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The conceptual framework for this study was leadership that captured the connection between effective leadership, organizational growth, financial stability, and success for the local church. Interviews were conducted, and the research questions revealed the best practices, procedures, and leadership behaviors used by the study church leaders for the success of the 3 local churches. Based on the methodological triangulation of the interview data, 10 themes emerged after the using NVivo 11 data analysis software: (a) people-centeredness, (b) communication between the leader and followers, (c) good morals, (d) prayer life that involves constantly talking with God, (e) strategic planning, (f) Christ-centeredness that causes the leader to acknowledge God at all times, (g) love, (h) integrity, (i) God, and (j) Biblical education. As a result of the findings from this study, the potential contributions to social change can include a blueprint for developing future church leaders, increased strategies for creating employment opportunities, and strengthening the family unit through leading people to follow the laws of God and man.

Abstract:

The research of job satisfaction in the Jamaican Baptist Union churches has received limited focus from academia. Leadership practices in the church profession poses a crisis in Jamaica, which could result in church workers’ inability to provide high quality service to church members and to the community. The purpose of the quantitative study was to investigate the relationship between the level of job satisfaction of church workers and church pastors and leaders’ transformational leadership style. The studied variables were (a) Idealized Influence Attributed (IIA), (b) Idealized Influence Behavioral (IIB), (c) Inspirational Motivation (IM), (d) Intellectual Stimulation (IS), (e) Individualized Consideration (IC), demographics and job satisfaction. The study required implementation of a composite survey consisting of the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), the Job in General (JIG) questionnaire, and a Demographic Questionnaire. One hundred forty church workers participated in the study. The participants were members of the Jamaican Baptist Union churches in Kingston, Jamaica. The ages ranged from 18 to 60. The majority were males 72 (51.4%), and 68 (48.6%) were females. The findings of the quantitative study using the Pearson’s Product Moment and the MANCOVA assessed the multivariate relationships between the variables. The study results indicated a statistical significant correlation between church leaders’ transformational leadership styles and church workers’ job satisfaction. Future researchers and leaders should consider replicating the study with other churches in hopes to attain a more positive influence on workers job satisfaction and achieve a level of effectiveness in services.

Abstract:

Ph.D.
The purpose of this study is to examine the succession processes and experiences of senior pastors in megachurches. The term succession is used in the study to refer to the transition in which one leader leaves an organization and another one takes her/his place. The term process speaks of the sequence of individual and collective events, actions, and activities unfolding over time in context (Pettigrew, 1985). The term senior pastor is used to refer to the top leader in churches with multiple pastoral staff. The term megachurch is used here as a descriptive term to refer to Protestant churches with 2,000 or more attendees in their worship services each week (Thumma, 1996). Few changes have greater impact on an organization than the change of the senior leader. Historically, succession processes in churches have been disruptive events often leading to temporary or, in many cases, permanent decline (particularly when the predecessor led the church to a perhaps unprecedented time of growth). Succession was often an undiscussed matter until the departure of a predecessor. Since the proliferation of megachurches is a relatively new social phenomenon, little is known about the succession processes of senior pastors in these churches. This study on succession process seeks to address a gap in the literature regarding succession in megachurches by offering first- hand descriptive accounts by those who have lived through the succession process. Further, this study seeks to enrich the literature by seeking to integrate current leadership theory with this succession study. Examination of the processes of succession and the nature of the proposed research questions favor a qualitative approach methodologically. Since this is an attempt to holistically describe what is going on and to build a knowledge base for developing theory rather than test hypotheses, the methodology adopted needs to allow maximally for serendipitous discovery, description and explanation. This study proposes to describe, analyze and compare the succession processes and experiences of senior pastors in three megachurches through in-depth interviews with those most immersed in the succession process, through document review, archival review and through a basic organization profile survey.

Abstract:
I propose to give an explanation for the adoption of modern administrative, managerial and economic practices by the Catholic Church in Brazil. The objective is to understand how the religious actors justify for themselves their involvement in something once considered absurd and the opposite to the ideals of charity. (cf. Bourdieu, 1996a; Durkheim,1989; Weber, 1982). One can find many recent facts and events which indicate the entrance and ample diffusion of entrepreneurial and economic concepts inside Catholicism. There hasnt been an adequate explanation for such phenomena. Bourdieus (1996) model on the Economy of Symbolic Goods leads to an irresolvable paradox between interest and disinterest, closing itself in a duplicity which does not explain the churchs growing movement towards modernization. At the same time, the religious market theories do not provide a basis for comprehension. For Berger (1985), modernization leads to the weakening of the churches, which isnt true. Stark and Iannaccone (1994) do not discuss issues related to the subject of organization and administration (cf. Frigério, 2008). The explanatory model I adopted was that of Boltanski and Thévenot (1999; 2006), which allows one to escape such duplicity and comprehend the dynamics of criticism and compromises among orders of values. The empiric research had two levels. Firstly, the diachronic level, through the identification of changes in different forms of critiques and compromises amongst the ecclesial and secular world. I then reconstructed a history of the idea and practices of pastoral management since 1890. Secondly, I analyzed the contemporary discourses of the actors who aim to propagate modern administrative thoughts and practices, in the catholic world. The analysis corroborate the proposed explanation: the adoption of managerial practices become possible when there is a displacement from the critical operations to the figures of compromise amongst the religious and secular principles of values. The construction of plausibility in the adoption of contemporary capitalist economic practices by the Catholic Church happens when its members, instead of denouncing secular practices related to temporal goods as expressions of egoism, individualism and decline of traditional values, appropriate them in order to justify their organizational objectives. That is to say, the modern administration is justified as a means to evangelize, promote common good and justice; in short, to carry on the mission.

Abstract:
Over the last 3 decades, religious organizations have been embroiled in scandals that have diminished public trust in the ecclesiastic community. The purpose of this study was to examine church leaders and members emotional intelligence and spiritual leadership behavioral characteristics that cultivate trust, and enhance organizational effectiveness, and establish a baseline database to facilitate perpetuating positive social change. The theoretical framework for this study used three models: Chathoth Trust Model; the Wei, Liu and Allen Emotional Intelligence (EI) model, and the Fry Spiritual Leadership Theory (SL) model. Survey instruments for each model were used to determine perspectives within the church that could support building trust. The key research questions considered whether there was a correlation between EI, SL, and trust and if there was any impact of trust on organization effectiveness (OE) in the sample of church leaders and members. A sample of 364 church leaders and members provided the data via opportunity sampling. Correlation, regression, and factor analyses were conducted between EI, and SL (predictor variables), and trust (primary outcome variable) and OE (secondary outcome variable). The results indicated a significant, positive relationship (a) between EI and trust, (b) between SL and trust, and (c) with trust influencing OE. Positve social change for both followers and leaders within an ecclesiastic community may be experience, if leadership find value in the current outcomes and apply what has been learned to further positive organizational transformation and trust.

Jackson, Joey J. "Investigating the challenges senior pastors of Missionary Baptist Churches of Greater Minneapolis experience during change." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3583288.

Abstract:

According to a review of the literature, Christian churches are divided because of constant rejection of change. In spite of the 70% failure rate of all organizational change efforts, successful change initiatives are achievable. Senior pastors assume the primary role of leadership within the church, and were tasked with the responsibility of leading God’s people through change and guiding the evolution of the church. Parishioners rely on senior pastors to provide the vision, as many parishioners continue to hinder the change efforts of the senior pastor. The hermeneutical phenomenological research design was used in the qualitative study to investigate the phenomenon of change through the challenges experienced by senior pastors of Missionary Baptist Churches of Greater Minneapolis during change. Seventeen senior pastors of Missionary Baptist Churches of Greater Minneapolis participated in audio taped face-to-face interviews. During the analysis five themes emerged: (a) mixed emotions; (b) servant of the Lord; (c) relationships; (d) organizational culture; and (e) communication is the key. Recommendations for senior pastors, organizational leaders, and Seminary and Bible Colleges were developed from the results of the qualitative hermeneutical phenomenological study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine if there is an association between effective supervision and communication competence in divisions of student affairs at Christian higher education institutions. The investigation examined chief student affairs officers (CSAOs) and their direct reports at 45 institutions across the United States using the Synergistic Supervision Scale and the Communication Competence Questionnaire. A positive significant association was found between the direct report's evaluation of the CSAO's level of synergistic supervision and the direct report's evaluation of the CSAO's level of communication competence. The findings of this study will advance the supervision and communication competence literature while informing practice for student affairs professionals. This study provides a foundation of research in the context specific field of student affairs where there has been a dearth of literature regarding effective supervision. This study can be used as a platform for future research to further the understanding of characteristics that define effective supervision.

Abstract:
Although the Code of Canon Law provides at canon 281 the remuneration of clerics and their social assistance in case of sickness, invalidity or old age, this provision is far from being properly applied to the secular priests of Central Africa. In addition to structural poverty, the country is in the throes of a civil war that has destroyed the entire socio-economic fabric. But war does not justify everything. There is a problem of management and administration of ecclesiastical goods. The rigorous and transparent management of the meager financial resources available to the Church remains a major challenge. While it is true that clergy subsistence is the responsibility of the Church, priests also have an important part to play. Our thesis proposes the steps to be taken to make possible the self-reliance of the priests in the Central African Republic

Abstract:
The purpose of the collected papers dissertation was to critically examine the individual and institutional conditions that shaped battered women’s work experiences in church organizations. The studies in the collected papers shared the provision of using a methodological and analytic tool, institutional ethnography (IE), that offers a strategic and comprehensive means of investigating issues related to institutions and institutional processes that merge a macro and micro view. The first paper was a conceptual paper that emphasized the socio-political context in which adult vocation education is practiced and shared a practical means of using IE to uncover the interconnected and interdependent social processes that prohibit an individual’s ability to navigate structural and political subsystems that impact learning, teaching, and work. The second paper was an empirical paper that used IE to help us see how battered women’s needs as workers in Christian churches are evaporated behind institutional ideologies and actions that invalidate her concerns while preserving their ideals. The study revealed four ways that African American battered women entered into an institutional death process by direct disclosure or assumed disclosure: (a) invalidation, (b) overspiritualization, (c) inauthenticity, (d) and bifurcation. It was found, that once disclosure took place, women placed a different expectation upon the church to respond to their issue of domestic abuse. In summation, Study #2 highlighted the use of IE in uncovering the institutional relations that shaped women’s experiences as work in Christian churches. Overall, the findings elucidate ways that social workers, churches, adult educators, and HRD researchers and practitioners can engage in research that has implications for how to collaborate for implementable solutions. The findings provide ways for African American women to navigate oppressive regimes; and lends insight to how adult educators, HRD practitioners, and pastors who work with battered women can assist and intervene in the educational, emotional, and natural support areas for African American battered women working in Christian churches.

Barfar, Arash. "Predictive Analytics of Organizational Decisions and the Role of Rationality." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5907.

Abstract:
How can we predict key decisions made by organizations in the presence of big data and on-demand information? In this dissertation we exploit a large repository of B2B real-time transactional data with service quality indicators and present evidence that organizational decision analytics apply both rational and boundedly-rational (i.e. behavioral) economic models. The dissertation’s findings demonstrate that both utility and heuristic models, respectively, play significant roles in predicting organizational decisions on churn, a key decision in this context. In the presence of a large data set the assumed rationality of organizations appears to provide accurate predictions in uncontrolled experiences and selected boundedly-rational decision rules appear to cause somatic states that make organizations more sensitive to past total qualities of service. This dissertation makes significant new contributions to the understanding of how organizations can effectively use big data to make key operational decisions. As a managerial implication, organizations must be alert to heuristics that might exacerbate the impact of total service pain on customer’s decision to churn.

Abstract:

This dissertation explores contemporary church planting experiences across select locational contexts. In the 21st century, there has been an intentional focus and renewed vigor among several Christian Protestant denominations, church planting networks, and church planting churches to effectively influence the start and growth of new churches. These church planting entities are attempting to address changing spiritual, geographical, sociological, and cultural realities in the United States through the entrepreneurial endeavor of founding new churches. This strategy of outreach is increasing in use because new churches tend to be pioneering, adaptable, and able to meet the needs of different populations. However, the available evidence and information about church planting is less than comprehensive. This qualitative research study was conducted to add insights to the entrepreneurship, leadership, and organizational change literature by exploring church planting across select locational contexts. This study utilized 11 church planting expert interviews and two mini-case studies of extant churches in order to examine five factors that are considered key in church planting: the overarching church planting perspective, church plant support systems, leadership approaches, organizational change, and successful outcomes. A key goal of the study was to identify and acknowledge diverse perspectives and realities in the church planting experience. The findings revealed a need for a universal definition of church planting and a more comprehensive and holistic approach to church plant support systems, leadership development, and the management of change. Further studies could include a more extended, multi-year longitudinal study that evaluates the organizational change approaches of diverse church plants, and use of experimental research design studies to assess collaboration across churches and church planting entities.
