Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between peer and parental control factors and smoking behaviour of adolecents among junior high school students in Mataram. Observational study was used to collect data from 108 students aged 12 to 17 on their own smoking status and parental controls. The result showed secondary students who smoke are subjected to peer group pressures and they have fewer parental controls with regard to smoking. More pressures on smoking within the peer groups were associated with a greater likelihood of smoking behaviour (p>0.05; p=0.642). However, parental controls on smoking have also been found to have influence to decreasing the likelihood of smoking behaviour among 7th and 8th students (p>0.05; p=0.440). In general, peers has stronger effects on initiation of adolecents smoking behavior than parental control influences. This findings suggest that more extensive controls on smoking at home may reduce adolecents smoking behaviour. Thus, smoking prevention for adolecents might be focused on social context such as, resisting to peer pressure and enhacing parental communication. Abstract:
The global pandemic caused by Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to major lifestyle changes in people living in the affected countries. Namely, most countries declared the state of emergency which included the implementation of different precautionary measures, such as restriction of movement, travel ban, isolation, social distancing and wearing protective equipment. The global fight with the unknown virus generated an abundance of different, often contradictory and inconsistent information. These new changes can have a potentially major impact on the physical and mental health of both children and adults. Children are a particularly vulnerable population in crisis situations. Although research shows that children and young people exhibit clinically significantly milder forms of COVID-19 compared to adults, their vulnerability is reflected in a greater susceptibility to develop serious psychological consequences. Mental problems of children most often develop due to the inability to adequately understand the new situation, fear, separation from peers, changes in the mental state of parents and greater susceptibility to abuse and neglect. Also, systematic changes in the country (closure of educational institutions, reduced workload or closure of health institutions or institutions of support and assistance to children and vulnerable individuals) contribute to the difficulty of overcoming the pandemic. These changes especially affect children with pre-existing mental disorders, neurodevelopmental difficulties, and children from vulnerable and minority groups who require more care and services from different support systems. In order to avoid harmful consequences for the health of children, we will present recommendations focused on children and parents, which are intended for the easier overcoming of crisis situations such as the current pandemic.

AbstractThe appearance, the differential diagnosis and the prevalence of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents is discussed. Among adolescents bipolar disorder appears to have a similar prevalence in the US and The Netherlands. However, among children it is frequently diagnosed in the US and hardly in The Netherlands. It is concluded that bipolar disorder tends to start earlier in the US than in the Netherlands. It is hypothesized that this may be related to a higher use of stimulants and antidepressants by US children diagnosed as ADHD or depression, respectively.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:According to data published in prior research projects, television is emerging as a socializing influence which mediates with family and school in the transmission of values during the socialization of young people. However, there is as yet no consensus regarding what kind of values are actually transmitted and whether or not they coincide with the values that other first-order socializing influences (family and school) aim to transmit to young people. In order to provide information that may help generate knowledge regarding this study aim, this paper seeks to explore the similarities and differences observed in the way that 565 adolescents from Guadalajara (Mexico), Dublin (Ireland), Donostia/San Sebastián and Malaga (Spain) perceive values in the characters from their favorite television shows. Participants were all secondary school students aged between 14 and 19, and the instrument used to record the values perceived in the characters from their favorite television shows was the Value Domain Scale (VAL-TV 0.2). Results were compared in accordance with city and sex. The findings indicate that there are more similarities than differences in the values perceived by adolescents of both sexes from different cities. Nevertheless, one of the cities studied, Dublin, was found to differ more notably from the others; and in relation to sex, adolescent girls from all cities scored higher than boys in the values studied. Finally, the ranking of perceived values was the same for all cities and both sexes, with those referring to openness to change (independence of action and thought) scoring highest in both cases. This was followed by self-transcendence (collective wellbeing), self-promotion (one own interests) and, finally, conservatism (safety and order). Keywords: values, adolescents, television.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction: One of reproductive health issues on adolescent in developing countries was sexuality. Issues of sexuality was multifactor, such as cultural factors. Cultural barriers affect the socialization of reproductive health and sexual education in adolescents, because it was considered taboo to talk about it. Method: This study was a qualitative study. The number of informants as many as 10 adolescent students, one community leader, 2 parent of adolescents, 2 teachers. The data shown is obtained from in-depth interviews. Data were then analyzed by using interactive analysis model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Result: The result had shown that 1) perceptions of sexuality was understood as sexual intercourse or physical activity that was driven by the desire to the opposite sex, perceptions about adolescent promiscuity with regard to sexuality was seen as something that very concern because beyond norms and customs, many sexuality information was obtained from school environment such as peers, media, environment (in this case was people around the house) and none got information from the parents, and the norms-values -culture were believed as self-control in activities related to sexuality such as relationship; 2) adolecent’s behavior related to sexuality was associated with relationship and still done normatively, infl uenced by eastern culture, there was no informant who had sexual intercourse before marriage; 3) psychosexual of adolescent, were affected by social relationships in their environment at home, including closeness to parents, norms, values learned at home. Discussion: Based on the research results can be given suggestions that one of them needed to talk openly about sex and sexuality information to youth.Key words: perception, behavior, sexuality, adolescent

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The classical treatment algorythm of idiopathic severe aplastic anemia (SAA) forsees, if a sibling donor is not available in the family, a first line option represented by immunosuppressive therapy (IST) with ATG and Cyclosporine A (CsA). IST provides a very good survival rate but a fairly high rate of failures (no response, relapse, need for transplant). This is particularly important in childhood and adolescence where faulty hematopoiesis represents a relevant limitation of quality of life. The option of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) from matched unrelated donor (MUD) as front line treatment with no prior failed IST, has never been investigated so far. This study provides for the first time the outcome analysis of 29 consecutive SAA patients who received an upfront unrelated donor HSCT without prior IST, in 9 UK Centres and compares each of these patient with 3 matched controls from the data base of the SAAWP of the EBMT who, in a similar time-span, underwent Matched Sibling Donor (MSD) HSCT. Twenty four patients received HLA-A,-B,-C,-DQ-,-DRB1 matched MUD HSCTs whilst 5 received single antigen/allele Mismatched Unrelated Donor (MMUD) grafts. The conditioning regimen was FCC (Fludarabine, Cyclophosphamide and Alemtuzumab) with the addition of low dose (3cGy) TBI for the MMUD HSCTs. GVHD prophylaxis was with CsA +-Mycophenolate. The primary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and event free survival (EFS). Events were death, disease recurrence, second HSCT, clinical PNH and post-transplant malignancies. Complete remission (CR) was defined as Hb > 10 g/dl, neutrophil count > 1x 109/l and platelet count > 100x109/l. The 87 (3 for each MUD/MMUD HSCT) patients from the EBMT data base who underwent MSD HSCT as first line treatment were matched to the upfront MUD/MMUD cohort by age, gender, time from diagnosis to HSCT and source of stem cells. Their median follow-up was 1.6 years (range 0.01-9.39). In the upfront MUD/MMUD cohort there were 12 males (41%) and 17 females (59%). Median age at HSCT was 8.46 years (range 1.73-19.11), 72% was aged below and 28% above 12 years; median interval from diagnosis to HSCT was 0.39 years (range 0.19-1.35) with 72 % receiving bone marrow and 28% peripheral blood stem cells. The median follow-up was 1.7 years (range 0.19-8.49). The median time to neutrophil recovery (>0.5 x 109/l) was 18 days (range 9-29) and the median time to platelet recovery (>50 x 109/l) was 19 days (range 10-40). The 100 day cumulative incidence (CI) of grade II-IV acute GVHD was 10 ± 6% ; there was only one case of grade III-IV acute GVHD (frequency of 3.5%). The 1 year CI of chronic GVHD was 19 ± 8%. There were 5/29 cases (frequency of 17,2 %), 4 in the MUD and 1 the MMUD subset. Chronic GVHD was limited in all cases and restricted to skin. There were only 2 events in this cohort; one primary graft failure following a HLA-A MMUD HSCT who has now successfully received a second HSCT and one death due to idiopathic pneumonia syndrome. No post-treatment malignancies occurred at last follow-up. The other 27 patients are in CR at last follow-up. The median interval diagnosis-neutrophil recovery was similar in MUD/MMUD (0.39 years; range 0.19-1.35) vs MSD transplants (0,31 years; range 0,1- 0,45) (p=0.93). The 2 year OS was 96%±4% in the upfront MUD/MMUD cohort vs 91%±3% of the MSD cohort (p=0.30). The 2 year EFS was 92%±5% in the upfront cohort vs 87%±4% in MSD (p=0.37) (Fig 1). The 2 year CI of rejection was 4%±4% in the MUD/MMUD vs .1%±1% in the MSD group (p=0.48). This is the first controlled study indicating that in idiopathic SAA of childhood and adolecence upfront MUD/MMUD HSCT using FCC as conditioning regimen, has similar outcome to MSD HSCT. MUD HSCT may be considered a feasible and successful treatment option when children lack a MSD and a MUD is readily available. Figure 1 Figure 1. Comparison of EFS between upfront MUD/MMUD and front-line MSD HSCT. Events were: death, disease recurrence, second HSCT, clinical PNH and post-transplant- malignancies.
