Abstract:
Inadaquate parental monitoring is widely recognized as a risk factor for the development of child and adolescent conduct problems, including early premarital sexual behavior. Previous studies examining parental monitoring have largely effect to adolescents premarital sexual behavior. Parental monitoring is the most important and effective factor to prevent early adolescents sexual activity. This paper examines the role of perceived parental monitoring in adolescent’s premarital sexual behavior (study on Adolescent’s Junior High School in Pontianak). A cross-sectional study and proportionated random sampling was conducted among 402 adolescents of junior high school at six subdistricts in Pontianak. SEM analyses was conducted using SMART-PLS. Result of path analysis revealed that parental knowledge (r = 0.389) and parental-adolescence relationship (r = 0.334) had a strong influence on parental monitoring. Then, parental monitoring had a significant indirect relationship with adolescent premarital sexual behavior through attitudes about premarital sexual (path coefficient = 0.063), and attitudes about premarital sexual and intention to sexual behaviour (path coefficient = 0.03). Parental monitoring can act as protective factor in early adolescent premarital sexual behavior. Therefore, risk reduction interventions with adolescents should include their parents to learn about monitoring skill and develop skill that will allow them to buffer negative influences.

Abstract:
Background Externalising (delinquent, aggressive) and internalising (anxious/depressed, withdrawn) behaviour problems are prevalent in childhood. Few studies have prospectively measured relationships between childhood behaviour problems and adolescent health risk behaviour, a major predictor of morbidity and mortality. This study sought to determine relationships, by gender, between childhood behaviour problems and adolescent risky sexual behaviours and substance use. Methods: In a population-based birth cohort [The Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study], total, externalising and internalising behaviour problems (domain-specific T ≥ 60) were calculated from parent-reported Child Behavior Checklist at ages 2, 5, 8, 10 and 14 years. At age 17 years, 1200 (49% male) participants reported sexual and substance use activity Results: For both genders, those with earlier externalising behaviour problems were more likely to be sexually active (oral sex or sexual intercourse) by age 17 years. Males with childhood externalising behaviour problems were more likely to have multiple sexual partners by age 17 years than those without such problems [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.96, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.49–5.86]. Females with childhood externalising behaviour problems were more likely to have had unwanted sex (aOR 1.91, 95% CI 1.04–3.53). Externalising behaviour problems were associated with substance use for both genders. No association was found between internalising behaviour problems and risky behaviour. Conclusions: Externalising behaviour problems from as early as 5 years old in boys and 8 years old in girls predict a range of risky sexual behaviour in adolescence, which has important implications for targeting interventions in adolescence.

Abstract:
Sexual risk taking behaviour carries a number of aversive outcomes including HIV infection, STIs and unplanned pregnancies. Past research has shown adolescents in particular are at a high risk for these negative consequences. This study examines how negative gender beliefs operate to predict sexual risk taking in later adolescence. Participants were 164 adolescents that completed 2 questionnaires over 2 years. Past research has suggested sexual risk taking behaviour is determined by multiple systems of influence. Therefore, additional demographic and contextual variables were included in data analysis. Results suggest that the single best predictor of future sexual risk taking is past sexual risk taking F (10, 170) = .54, p < .001. Additionally, high levels of drug use, F (10, 170) = .25, p < .001 and low acceptance of interpersonal violence, F (10, 170) = -.19, p < .05 were found to predict sexual risk taking in later adolescence. The findings have significant implications on intervention and prevention methods aimed at adolescent sexual health.

Abstract:
Adolescence is a phase in human life which is characterized as the growing desire for sexual intercourse. Furthermore, the lack of knowledge on sexual health during this phase may result in risky sexual practices. So, parental monitoring is essential for this group of people. On this basis, I have conducted a review on parental monitoring of risky sexual behaviour of adolescents. While reviewing, accessible and eligible resources are consulted from PubMed, Hinari, Research Gate, etc up to November 2018. This review primarily focuses on how the parents monitor the probable risky sexual practices of their adolescent children. On the basis of existing literature, this review attempts to explore the growing risky practices of sexual behaviour among children without parental guidance.

Abstract:
Background: Adolescence and young age is a time of opportunity and risk. During this time, attitudes, values and behaviours that forms a young person's future begin to develop and take shape. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 70% of health related issues in adults are largely due to behaviours initiated during adolescence. Age of sexual debut is generally low, yet there is dearth of knowledge on sexuality. Methods: This prospective study was conducted on adolescents and young people visiting the dermatology out patient department of a tertiary care centre in north India over 6 months duration with the help of a self administered questionnaire regarding sexual health and practices followed by imparting knowledge regarding safe sexual practices by the author. Results: Sexual debut is usually with an elder as noted in the study. Youngsters engage in unhealthy sexual behaviours, characterized by early age at sexual initiation, unsafe sex and multiple sex partners, Reasons given for this include curiosity, peer influence, pleasure and financial benefit, amongst others. Conclusions: Similar patterns of sexual behavior have been seen in all parts of the world, the findings being similar in developed as well as developing nations. Despite the ongoing programs and initiatives taken by the Indian government, this article points to the need of increasing sexual awareness by incorporating sexual education as a part of the early education curriculum, by helping and including parents to overcome the social and cultural barrier between them and their children. Abstract:
Background: Adolescence is a transition period of rapid growth and development which makes this age group more vulnerable. These vulnerabilities manifest in risk behaviours that predispose them to injuries, violence, suicidal tendencies and sexual abuse in adolescence and in later stages of life. The objective of present study was to assess the health risk behaviour of rural and urban male adolescents concerning injuries, violence and sexuality. Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted among 848 school going adolescents (15-19 years) over a period of one year (2014-2015). Schools were randomly selected using multistage simple random sampling. The youth risk behaviour survey (YRBS) questionnaire was used for data collection. Behaviours regarding driving, carrying weapons, violence, suicidal thoughts and sexual activities were explored. Descriptive statistics was used in form of percentages and proportions. Chi square test was used as a test of significance. Results: Less than half of adolescents surveyed used helmet and seatbelt while 22%reported using mobile phone while driving. Out of total adolescents, 13.7% carried weapons to school while 23.8% damaged or stole other students' property. Adolescents in the urban area were more often threatened or injured with a weapon by someone on school premises as compared to rural counterparts. Nearly half of (47%) urban and 33% of rural ever felt so sad leading to stoppage of usual activities. Only 10.7% adolescents reported having first sexual intercourse out of which nearly one third (38.4%) had not used any method to prevent pregnancy. Conclusions: Adolescents frequently reported high risk behaviour regardless of place of residence and type of school.

Problem that often occurs in adolescents is sexual behavior. Self-concept can affect a person's behavior including risky sexual behavior. Teenagers with low self-concept are prone to high-risk sexual behavior. This study was descriptive correlative, design with cross sectional approach with aims to know the relationship between self concept with sexual risk behavior in adolescence at one of the high school in Bandung. The population was 449 students, and used stratified random sampling and obtained samples as many as 212 students. This study used two instruments, Tennesse Self Concept Scale questionnaire and sexual risk behavior questionnaire. This study used univariate dan bivariate with spearman rank data analysis. The results showed that 100% of the respondents have high self concept. Then, 50.5% of respondents behave sexually at high risk. The results of bivariate analysis showed p value <0.05 (0.018) which means there was a correlation between self concept with sexual risk behavior. It is recommended to health service institutions to improve health education regarding risky sexual behavior inadolescents. Keywords: self-concept, sexual risk behaviour, adolescence

Abstract:
Introduction: Accepting and supportive family relationships during childhood and adolescence may have long-term associations with psychosocial functioning into adulthood. Cross-sectional studies provide evidence by which positive family relationships promote adolescent health by increasing the likelihood of positive outcomes including higher educational and occupational attainment and reducing the risk for negative outcomes including suicidal behaviour and poor health. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 500 male adolescents from the urban and rural field practice areas in the vicinity of Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College Amritsar. Cross sectional study was conducted to examine the relation between familial conflict problems and psychosocial/behavioural disorders in adolescents. Results: Almost one third (33%) adolescents were having parental and family dispute problems. These problems were significantly higher in middle adolescence (14-16 years), adolescents of large extended families (>8 members) and in lower socioeconomic status. Residence had no significant relation to family problems in the adolescents. On correlation, poor and unhealthy family atmosphere had more chances in adolescents of having greater academic problems, depression, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse and more sexual activity. Conclusion: Family involvement, family structure, parental values, parental monitoring and parent-child communication are important factors influencing critical life choices in teens. The family support and communication should be improved through these education programs to develop healthy psychosocial and sexual attitudes and counteract unsafe behaviours in the adolescents. Future research is needed to identify additional pathways underlying this association, and the extent to which these factors are modifiable.J. Nepal Paediatr. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa, it is important to understand the sexual behaviours that place youth at risk of HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancies in order to develop and implement appropriate health-promoting interventions. Parents are in a unique position to help adolescents to have responsible attitudes and behaviour towards sex, and to educate adolescents into healthy sexual adults. The study aimed to investigate parent-adolescent communication and adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviour, and the relationship between them. An exploratory, descriptive research design and a quantitative methodological approach were used. One biographical questionnaire, three measuring scales of parent-adolescent communication and one questionnaire about adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour were used as measuring instruments. Data from 95 female adolescents who were attending the family planning facilities of two clinics in the Metropole Region of the Western Cape were employed for the study. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlations, analyses of variance and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed a high prevalence of sexual risk-taking behaviours among adolescents in the Western Cape. Family environment characteristics, especially the parents’ marital status, play a significant role in both parent-adolescent communication and sexual risk-taking behaviour. Unexpected findings were some significant correlations that were found between different factors of both general and sexual parent-adolescent communication. Spearman’s correlations and best subsets multiple regression analysis were performed on the data to ascertain which factors are significantly correlated or associated with adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour. In both statistical analyses, the amount of parent-adolescent communication about sexual issues was the most important. A significant negative correlation between adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviours and the amount of parent-adolescent communication about sexual issues illustrates the positive influence of amount of parent-adolescent sexual communication on adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviour.

Abstract:

Since the early 1980&rsquo
s when the first case of HIV was diagnosed, AIDS remains a serious and threatening health crisis in the world. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region most affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic having 67 % of the 33 million people infected with HIV globally in 2007. Young people aged 15-24
account for an estimated 45% of all new HIV infections worldwide. The study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes on HIV/AIDS and sexual
behavior among 15-19 year olds in Kenya. A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was conducted among 96 students randomly selected from five public
schools in Ngong sub-district. Descriptive and bivariate analysis was conducted using Epi Info 3.3 and SPSS. The main findings indicate that a third
(31/96) of respondents were sexually experienced. Knowledge level was however found to be inadequate (below 60 %) indicating a poorly informed sample on knowledge about HIV transmission and prevention. The study showed poor attitudes towards the risk to HIV as only 40 % of both males and females supported the use of condoms even when the sexual partners know each other well. Inaddition, risky sexual behaviors were reported by sexually

experienced respondents where condom use in last sexual intercourse was (57 %) among males and (20 %) among females.

Abstract:
The study aimed at investigating the impact of alcohol on the sexual behaviour of male adolescents, with the purpose of establishing whether a relationship exists between alcohol use and risky sexual behaviour (i.e. multiple partners, unprotected, and unplanned sex) by adolescent males. Data was collected by means of an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. The sample consisted of 176 male high school learners, aged between 14 and 25, from one school in the Nkonkobe Municipality, Eastern Cape Province. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to obtain data analyses which included descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation (with specific reference to Chi-square analysis), and all procedures were performed at 0.05 level of significance with 95% Confidence Interval. A relationship between alcohol use and risky sexual behaviour was found to exist. A statistically significant correlation was found in support of the alcohol/risky sex hypothesis. Another significant finding was the increase noted in safer sex practises among adolescents. Finally, the findings were correlated to implications.

Abstract:
Section A is a review of the literature pertaining to positive environmental influences on sexual identity development amongst sexual minority (SM) adolescents. Extant research suggests SM adolescents are at risk of adjustment difficulties; there is a dearth of research regarding positive influences on development. Positive influences include micro-system factors, such as friend and family affirmation, with limited understanding of macro-system factors. Section B reports the research study, which took an ecological approach to investigating protective factors in the lives of sexual minority adolescents. It aimed to investigate affirming experiences, exploring whether sexual minority ‘affirming messages’ (AM) are experienced, the process of experiencing AM and their perceived effects. A mixed-method cross sectional design with three phases of qualitative and quantitative data collection was implemented. Phases included a 12 participant focus group, an online survey completed by 107 participants and respondent validation with five participants. Participants reported AM were experienced, but were not accessible enough. AM were less accessible when first considering sexual identity, a time of negative feelings. Participants were actively engaged in seeking AM, most commonly on-line and from friends and least commonly from school. The importance of role models, similar others and self-acceptance was recognised. Results suggested that although AM are not considered accessible enough, they have a positive impact. This has implications for provision of AM within educational settings and the media.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The HIV pandemic threatens the social, emotional, and physical development of all persons, especially the youth. Adolescents are more at risk of contracting HIV as their lifestyle often involves sexual exploration and experimentation. Effective educational interventions are central to HIV prevention in South Africa. Being a clinical nurse practitioner in a primary health care (PHC) facility, the principal investigator observed that school learners failed to practice safe sex and demonstrated little knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention. The aim of the study was to investigate the reported level of HIV knowledge and sexual risk behaviour of grade 12 school learners in the Eastern Sub-District of the Cape Metropole, Cape Town. A descriptive, non-experimental, research design was employed with a primarily quantitative approach. The study population comprised grade 12 learners from high schools in the Eastern Sub-District of the Cape Metropole in Cape Town (N=7940). A total of 92 participants from four schools (2 public and 2 private) were included in the sample by using a cluster sampling method. A self-completion semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data was collected by the principal investigator and a trained field worker. Ethical approval was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University (N11/07/225). Permission to conduct the research was obtained from the Department of Education. Reliability and validity were assured by means of a pilot study and the use of experts in the field of nursing research and statistics. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse data. Statistical associations were determined using ANOVA and the Mann-Whitney U tests. The qualitative data was analysed thematically and then quantified. The results show that the average HIV/AIDS knowledge score of participants was 60.73%. However, many gaps in HIV/AIDS knowledge were identified. Only 77.2% (n=71) of participants knew the meaning of HIV, 80.4% (n=74) did not know all the ways in which HIV can be transmitted and only 8.7% (n=8) knew how to safely use a condom. The majority of participants (67.4%; n=62) believed in the myth that HIV can be cured and 18.5% (n=17) reported that a traditional healer can cure HIV. With regard to risky behaviour, half of the participants at the time of the study (51%; n=47) reported sexual engagement and 20% (n=9) of these respondents did not use condoms. Furthermore, 25% (n=23) had used alcohol before having sex. There were no association found between the knowledge about HIV/AIDS of participants and their sexual risk behaviour. In view of these study findings, participants are exposing themselves to high risk sexual behaviour that may increase their chances of acquiring sexually transmitted infections including HIV. Several recommendations were identified, including the strengthening of HIV and STI education linked to sexual risk reduction, open communication and additional information sources, availability of condoms at schools and improved access to HIV testing at schools.

Abstract:
This thesis in demography focuses upon very early entries into motherhood in a comparative perspective between two countries similar in socioeconomic terms but differing vastly in terms of fertility, especially during adolescence - France and England and Wales. It explores adolescent maternities as an “uncommon” reproductive behaviour and aims to place these un-“unintended” births in the context of the transition to adulthood. We offer a longitudinal view of this phenomenon by describing three “periods” in the life of an adolescent mother:- The period “before maternity” where becoming an adolescent mother is a function of three probabilities: of having sexual intercourse, of using contraception and of having an abortion in case of a pregnancy;- The period of the maternity. What are the characteristics and life conditions of adolescent mothers at the time of birth ?- The period “after maternity”. How do the reproductive, conjugal, professional and residential trajectories of mothers vary in function of their age at first birth ?

Cross-sectional study conducted between March 2012 and December 2013 that aimed to investigate and compare aspects of knowledge and sexual behavior among adolescents and young people living in a rural settlement in the Southwest region of the state of Goiás with urban adolescents in the municipality of Goiânia, Goiás. Participants from rural areas completed a standardized self-administered questionnaire, while the group of urban adolescents was randomly selected from the study by Oliveira (2013). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 13. A total of 69 adolescents and young settlers participated in the study, of whom 54 (78.3 %) adolescents who had at least seven years of formal study were compared with 107 urban adolescent students. It was found that there was no statistical difference between the groups considering gender, race and labor activity (p > 0.05). STD known more as the two groups were: HIV/AIDS, Syphilis and Hepatitis B. Most urban adolescents reported greater knowledge of STD (p < 0.05), with the exception of syphilis, reported by the settlers adolescents (p = 0.001). About contraceptive methods teens settlers also had lower knowledge in relation to urban, only IUDs and oral contraceptives proportions were similar ( p = 0.53 and p = 0.09, respectively) . Concerning the source of information on sexuality, the highest proportion of urban adolescents mentioned the internet (p=0.001) and boyfriend (p=0.002), while adolescents and young people mentioned the rural school (p=0.02) and mother (p=0.03). On the use of alcohol and other drugs, use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and crack showed no statistical difference between the proportions. In relation to sexual activity, 75 reported having initiated sexual life, 50 (47.2%) urban adolescents and 25 (46.3%) settlers. Condom use at first intercourse was similar between groups (p>0.05). In turn, the antecedent pregnancy excelled among rural adolescent group (p<0.001). The use of condoms as a contraceptive method was higher among the group of urban adolescents (p=0.04). Rural teens and young showed greater vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases in relation to the group of urban adolescents. The study data show the need for intersectoral work, especially among the areas of health and education as the creation and maintenance of health facilities and rural schools in the county to facilitate access to information ensuring thus promoting comprehensive adolescent health and young people to reduce vulnerabilities.

Abstract:
This study examined whether cultural values and gender moderate the association between mother-adolescent communication about sex and adolescents’ sexual behavior/intention to engage in sex and condom use attitudes. One hundred and fifty Latino adolescents completed an anonymous survey that measured sexual health outcomes, mother-child communication, and cultural factors. In bivariate analyses, adolescents with a higher sense of familismo had a more positive attitude towards using condoms and more acculturated Latino adolescents were less likely to speak to their mothers about pre-coital or coital sexual topics. Females spoke more about sex with their mother, compared to males. Traditional gender roles moderated the relation between mother-adolescent communication about sex and condom use attitudes. Acculturation, familismo nor gender significantly moderated the relationship between communication about sex and sexual health outcomes. Further research should explore whether certain cultural factors influence parents to talk to their adolescent about specific topics related to sex.

Abstract:
Background: Teenagers aged 15-19 encounter a disproportionate burden of adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The urgent ongoing efforts are needed to lead healthy, safe, and productive lives of teenage girls. This scoping review aimed to identify the association of early menarche with negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Subjects and Method: A scoping review method was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selection; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The search included PubMed, EBSCO, and Wiley databases. The keywords were “effect” OR “outcomes” AND “menarche” OR “menstruation” OR “menstrua” OR “menses” OR “early menarche” AND “reproductive health” OR “sexual reproducti” AND “sexual behavior” OR “sexual debut” OR “sexual partners” OR “unsafe sex” OR “unprotected sex”. The inclusion criteria were English-language and full-text articles published between 2009 and 2019. A total of 116 full text articles was obtained. After the review process, nine articles were eligible. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Four articles from developing countries (Nigeria, Malawi, Philippine) and five articles from developed countries (France, United States of America, England, Australia) met the inclusion criteria with cross-sectional and cohort design studies. The existing literature showed that early menarche was associated with sexual and reproductive health (early sexual initiation, low use of contraception), sexually transmitted diseases (genital herpes, HIV), and other factors (income, education level, sexual desire). Conclusion: Early age at menarche may contribute to the increase vulnerability of girls into negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Quality comprehensive sexual education may improve the sexual and reproductive health and well-being of adolescents. Abstract:
Background: Prevalence of adolescents’ unwanted pregnancy is relatively high in Asia (43%), Africa (45%), and both Latin America and Caribbean (74%). Unwanted pregnancy at an early age is correlated with social consequences as well as increased health risks for both mother and infants. Peer-based intervention is a program to promote sexual and reproductive health, including the prevention of unwanted pregnancy. This study aimed to assess the influence of peer-based intervention on unwanted pregnancy prevention behaviors in adolescents. Subject dan Method: Meta-analysis was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines. Articles with randomized controlled trial design published in 2000-2020 were included for meta-analysis. These articles were searched from PubMed, Science Direct, Research Gate, and Google Scholar databases. Keyword used “peer education” OR “peer led” OR “peer counseling” OR “peer approach” OR “peer teaching” OR “peer mentoring” AND “unwanted pregnancy” AND adolescent AND “randomized controlled trial”. Articles that met eligibility criteria were analyzed using Revman 5.4. Results: Ten articles met the criteria for a meta-analysis with sample size 15,439. This study showed that peer-based intervention (RR=1.12; 95% CI=0.95 to 1.32; p=0.160) improved unwanted pregnancy prevention behavior in adolescents, but it was statistically non-significant. Conclusion: Peer-based intervention improves unwanted pregnancy prevention behavior in adolescents, but it is statistically non-significant. Abstract:
Research from a joint ESRI/HSE Health and Wellbeing research programme analyses how young people receive information on sex and relationships. Using data from the Growing up in Ireland ’98 Cohort at 13 and 17 years of age, the research also examines the role of this information in shaping sexual behaviours among Irish adolescents. The research finds that four in ten 17 year-olds have not spoken to their parents about sex and relationships.

Full text
Abstract:
From the perspective of developing countries, we know relatively little about married adolescent males and adolescent fathers, and much of what we know is inferred from research with young women or comes from a few specific regions in the world. However, there has been a growing interest in the issue on the part of researchers, policy-makers, and program staff. This interest has coincided with increasing attention in general to men, with gender studies, and with sexual and reproductive health initiatives. Early marriage and early childbearing are much more prevalent among young women than young men, and the negative consequences are more significant among young women. Nonetheless, it is the behavior and attitudes of men, within social contexts where gender hierarchies favor men over women, that often create young women’s vulnerability. Much of the research and literature on adolescent fathers comes from Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. This paper reviews some of the literature on young married men and young fathers, concluding with suggestions for engaging young men to promote better reproductive and sexual health and more favorable life outcomes for married adolescent women and young men.
