Abstract:
Over 90% of US adolescents own a smartphone. Adolescents commonly use smartphones to communicate through apps such as Snapchat and Instagram. Considering the rise in technology use and depressive symptoms amongst adolescents, communication patterns can provide insight into the communication habits of depressed adolescents. Prior research suggests that the effects of digital technology use on adolescents’ well-being differ based on the type of use and frequency of communication. We examined how adolescents with elevated depressive symptoms use smartphones to communicate, including apps, modalit

Abstract:
Objective: Early detection of vision, hearing, and developmental concerns with appropriate followup can lead to timely diagnosis and treatment and improve child and adult health outcomes. To assess what quality measures have been developed for children, this technical brief provides an evidence map for existing pediatric measures for vision, hearing, and developmental screening and followup. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and PsychINFO from 2009 to December 7, 2024 for relevant systematic reviews and original studies. Abstract:
This paper analyses the causal effects of exposure to high-speed internet on socioemotional wellbeing in adolescence and youth. We exploit the geographic and cross-cohort differences in fiber optic accessibility given by the fiber-optic-to-the-home (FTTH) project developed in Uruguay in the period 2011-2018. We identify intention-to-treat effects by combining administrative data on FTTH rollout with large survey data specially designed to collect outcomes in youth. Our results show that access to high-speed internet has mixed effects on mental health. Going from 0 to a 100% probability in FTTH

Abstract:
In this paper, I analyse the Inquisition trial record of Íria Álvares (fl. 1580-1600), an Indigenous woman from the sertão of Bahia. Íria was the only Indigenous woman born to Indigenous parents who was tried by the First Visit of the Inquisition to Brazil in the sixteenth century. For this reason, her trial record represents a unique opportunity to explore the experiences of a freed Indigenous woman who spent her childhood in the sertão and adolescence and adulthood in colonial society. An analysis of her trial suggests that Íria was cognisant of the dynamics of colonial society and used her
