Full textKohlberg's Structural Issue Moral Judgement Interview and several questionnaires were administered and journals kept by the educators and the researcher. Analysis of these data allowed us to describe how the program was implemented and showed that the intervention appreciably increased the stage of moral judgement of participants and improved the "moral atmosphere" of the program. In comparison to previous evaluations of the Just Community Approach, this program had more impact on these outcomes. It is suggested that the effects of the program could be strengthened by more intensive training of educators.

Since the sixties, several cohorts of Haitian immigrants have arrived and enriched the population of Canada. Today, this community is estimated at 130,000 individuals with over 90% choosing to live in Quebec build a portrait of a community younger than the Quebec average, with many single parent families, and where unemployment is almost twice as high than the society as a whole. Previous researchers report very strong bonds between the community members and the country of origin. Young Quebecers of Haitian origin claim multiple affiliations. Presumably, these findings have an effect on family dynamics and are apprehended differently by parents and by adolescents. Yet few studies focus simultaneously on these two groups. This thesis aim to make up for this lack. The theoretical framework used (the developmental niche where the concept of identity strategies is integrated) allows to consider both the experience of parents and teenagers and to explore the interactions between them. The recruitment of families instead of individuals is another originality of this research. Semi-directive interviews were conducted in eleven families for a total of twenty-four participants (twelve parents and twelve adolescents). The analysis allowed understanding the influence of the characteristics of the environment, especially the perception of Haitians in Quebec, in parents’ ethnotheories. Identity functions of memberships affirmed by youth regarding issues in the social environment were also analyzed. Several similarities between parents and adolescents emerge within families, which speaks of the mutual influence that take place in the families. In terms of perspective, further research should be conducted with other family types than those involved in this research. Many dialogue tracks that could be useful for intervention appeared between parents and adolescents, and between families and Quebec health and social institutions.

Soti nan lane 1960 yo konsa pou rive jounen jodi a, gen anpil Ayisyen ki imigre nan peyi Canada. 90 % ladan yo (130 000 konsa) chwazi tabli kò yo nan pwovens Québec. Dapre chif ofisyèl yo, kominote imigran ayisyen an gen plis jèn moun ladan l pase nan lòt kominote ki fòme popilasyon Québec la. Pifò nan jèn ayisyen sa yo, se avèk yon sèl paran y ap leve lakay yo. Epitou, ta sanble gen de fwa plis chomaj nan kominote ayisyen an pase nan tout rès popilasyon Quebec la. Rechèch ki fèt deja moutre ke moun nan kominote ayisyen an kenbe kontak sere ak peyi orijin yo. Analiz yo pèmèt nou konprann kijan sa k ap pase nan sosyete kote y ap viv la, espesyalman jan yo wè Ayisyen nan Quebec, gen enfliyans sou etnoteyori paran yo. Etid la eseye konprann tou kisa chak apatenans timoun yo deklare regle pou idantite yo dapre pwoblèm yo jwenn nan sosyete a. Nou jwenn anpil resanblans ant paran ak timoun yo, e sa fè nou konprann ke youn gen enfliyans sou lòt. Pou ale pi lwen nan etid la, fòk nou ta poze menm kesyon sa a yo sou lòt kalite fanmi mete sou sa ki enterese nou yo nan rechèch sa a. Sou aspè entèvansyon an, tèz la pwopoze anpil bon jan lide sou fason pou paran yo dyaloge ak jèn yo epi sou fason enstistisyon nan peyi Quebec yo entèraji ak fanmi imigran ayisyen yo.

Full textThe transition from school to work for students with an intellectual disability is a challenging step for the students, their parents as well as school stakeholders. This stage, which precedes the end of schooling, is also decisive for the future of these students. The participation of students in their transition process is an important aspect that contributes to the success of this stage. However, in the province of Quebec, this period has been poorly documented. This doctoral thesis focuses on the participation of students with intellectual disabilities in their transition process. The study is conducted with nine students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, aged 18 to 20, their parents and the school staff they attend. On one hand, it has been possible to describe the participation of these students by considering their point of view and the one of those around them (parents, school stakeholders) and, on the other hand, the strategies of support to participation deployed by them. The study's theoretical framework is the resilience-based ecosystem model, which places students "in the driver's seat" of their transition process; the student takes an active part and makes an original contribution. The interactions with his entourage allow him to overcome the difficulties encountered in his trajectory and to reinforce his natural resilience. This model also identifies individual, family or environmental protective factors that counteract the adversity experienced by students at the time of transition. This study favors a mixed methodology that includes interviews with students, parents and school stakeholders, the use of adapted instruments with the students (Échelle de résilience et Grille d’évaluation du réseau de soutien social) and the analysis of students' school intervention plans. The information collected situates the participation of students with developmental disabilities in their transition process according to four themes: their perspective on their trajectory and future activities, their participation in transition planning, their participation in preparatory activities for a transition to active life after schooling and accountability. Through these four themes, positive aspects and challenges emerge. Thus, the students identified projects for their life after school, they participated in their intervention plan meeting, they carry out several activities to develop skills for their future socio-professional integration, mainly in internship, and they assume certain responsibilities in their families and in the school environment. Still, students do not seem to have a suitable representation of the entire transition process as they do not participate very much in the preparation of their transition plan and the decisions that concern them. The results also show that students' participation in their transition process can be facilitated by different strategies: supporting the development of communication and social interaction skills, fostering student participation in transition planning (e.g. by making available and accessible materials that allow students to take ownership of their transition process and to better represent this important step for their future), to provide students with experiences in school and the community, to foster collaboration between the school and the family as well as with other important actors in the community and to put in place strategies that facilitate student learning and participation. In short, this study shows the contribution of practices put in place, the importance of consolidating them, and proposes new avenues that have the potential to increase student participation in their transition process in order to enable them to play a leading role in their future. Full textIn a series of three initial visits that spanned a year, adolescents from grades 6 through 11 completed a battery of measures used to assess a broad range of components of social competence. Intelligence and school grades were used as markers of the academic success; social perspective coordination and attachment to father, mother, and peers as indices of social adaptation; and identity with Native culture as an index of cultural identity. The follow-up indicators of academic success were based on school records of graduation from high school and of admission and entrance into post-secondary institutions. As expected within the academic domain, both intelligence and school grades contributed to long-term academic achievement. Within the social domain, social perspective coordination skills and attachment to father, but not attachment to mother or peers, promoted academic achievement. Within the cultural domain, lower identification with Native status was associated with school achievement. These findings highlight the need to promote both social and academic competence in the quest to further improve rates of high school graduation and post-secondary enrolment. The link between attachment to father and academic success also suggests that educational interventions should be focused on the family as well as the child. With regard to educational planning, the government-mandated curriculum should be adapted so that the Naskapi and majority education can be integrated in complementary ways rather than being pitted against each other in a way that allows for success on only one. Although each First Nations community is unique with regard to history, culture, language, and educational values, the identification of multiple predictors of academic success among Naskapi adolescents is likely relevant to other communities.

Full textAssessment of eating behaviours represents an important aspect in the treatment and prevention of childhood obesity. However, there are no self-reported questionnaires measuring the eating behaviours of Quebec children and adolescents. The objective of the master's project presented as part of this thesis was to translate and validate the French version of the Child Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (CTFEQ), measuring eating behaviour traits of cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating and emotional eating, among Quebec children and adolescents. One hundred and forty-five participants aged eight to fifteen years old completed three questionnaires including the CTFEQ, a socio-demographic questionnaire and a questionnaire measuring the presence of symptoms associated witheating disorders. Anthropometric measurements were also assessed, and participants completed a 24-hour dietary recall to assess diet intake and quality. The CTFEQ was administered a second time after two to four weeks to assess its reproducibility. The validation results led to obtaining a questionnaire comprising an adequate factor structure, internal consistency as well as reproducibility. A positive association has been observed between uncontrolled eating and emotional eating. Both of these eating behaviours have been negatively associated with body mass index. Cognitive restraint was positively correlated with the presence of symptoms associated with eating disorders, the proportion of energy intake derived from protein, and diet quality. These results suggest that the CTFEQ is validand can be used among French speaking Canadian children and adolescents to measure eating behaviors associated with childhood obesity.

At the request of the “Réseau du Sport étudiant du Québec”, the “En forme au secondaire” fitness test (B-EFAS) was developed. A total of 1626 high school students in Montreal and Saguenay were tested through a series of physical fitness tests : the 20-metre shuttle run test with 1 minute stage, the RSEQ anaerobic test, the fifteen-metre sprint round trip, the vertical jump, the paced push-ups, the paced sit-ups and the V-test. Multivariate analysis with distinctions of sexual and regional disparities was used to obtain a portrait of fitness. It is corroborated that boys get higher score at muscular tests and that girls perform better in flexibility. Forty-four percent (44%) of participants have obesity-related health risk. Between 1981 and 2014, the young were taller (♀ +1.67 cm, ♂ +2.25 cm), heavier (♀ +5.8 kg, ♂ + 5.6 kg) and their VO2max fell 13% (♀ -5 ml min-1 kg-1, ♂ -7 ml min-1 kg-1). The VO2max regresses between the ages of 12 and 17 among Quebeckers. Preliminary norms were built using LMS methods for all tests. Our research demonstrate that the RSEQ battery is evaluating and monitoring the progress of fitness at the High School level. Our study also shows that the physical condition of young people is likely to be affected by the global obesity epidemic and that significant changes in their lifestyle will be needed in order to reverse the situation.

Full textIn the province of Quebec, the youth protection system is taking care of youths deemed in danger as well as youths who commit crimes. Habitually, those two groups of youths are not placed together, except in special secure units called encadrement intensif,(secure care units). These units can legally host youths placed under protection and criminal nlaws. This situationof legal mixity is the source of professional concerns and is at the heart of the present study, which aims to identify the impact of mixity on clinical work and youths placed in secure care units. With a qualitative and constructivist approach of the problem, we conducted ten semistructured interviews with practitioners and managers working in secure care units, and transcription were the subject of a content analysis. Results shows that practitioners perceive many impacts of legal mixity on youths, such as exposition to bad influence, exposition to danger, facing neglect by some practitioners and increased control by other practitioners. About their clinical work, practitioners and managers report a lack of training with delinquent youths, and the possibility to compare their intervention with both category of youths, which is not possible in other units. The resulting analysis based on labeling theory shows that there is a gap between practitioners imaginary and daily experiences in secure care units.

Full textAbout half of Nunavik Inuit live in overcrowded households compared to 6% of the general Canadian population. Inuit adolescents are also more at risk of suffering from psychological distress than their Canadian peers. Living in overcrowded households is associated with greater risks of suffering from mental health problems for Canadian adolescents. However, no empirical and longitudinal study has examined the impact of living in an overcrowded household during childhood on psychological distress at adolescence for Inuit. The objective of the present work is to examine the hypothesized relationship between household overcrowding at childhood and psychological distress during adolescence among Nunavik Inuit, as well as the hypothesized relationship between these phenomena when they are both measure at adolescence. It will also examine if this relationship is moderated by sex. Recruited as part of the Nunavik Child Development Study, 220 participants were met when they were 11 years old in average, and then when they were 18 years old in average. Household overcrowding was assessed using the people per room ratio. Psychological distress symptoms were operationalized at adolescence using depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts. The results did not show that childhood household crowding had a longterm effect on psychological distress, nor effect moderation by sex. Despite these results, household crowding could be a risk factor when in interaction with other elements related housing conditions or with poverty, or could be experienced as a difficulty for adolescents on other aspects than depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts.

It investigates the effects of violence accumulation in the last year and the consequences of their exposure to these specific circumstances. This project uses an adaptation of the Stress Process Model as a theoretical framework and two poly-victimization studies of children and teenagers as empirical evidence. Overall, this study shows that children who have been exposed to family violence experience more types of violence and adverse events than non-exposed children. They also suffer from anxiety, anger, depression and post-traumatic stress at a higher level. In concrete, the results show that the number of victimizations observed during the last year have a moderating effect on the anger of the 2 to 11 year-olds and on the post-traumatic syndrome of the 12 to 17 year-olds. Yet, the variation of traumatic symptoms is only weakly explained by the model used. Other variables must be taken into account to have a better understanding of how psychological consequences affect children who have endured the accumulation of diverse types of violence.

Full textThis research focuses on adolescents' adaptation when living with a parent who has mental illness. A first objective was to explore the positive and negative impacts of living with parental mental illness. A second objective was to examine their coping skills as well as their perception of the efficiency of theses coping skills. Qualitative method has been chosen to pursue these goals and relies on Lazarus and Folkman transactional stress theory. Five adolescents have been met in a semi-structured interview. They also filled a questionnaire on coping skills, the Kidcope. The themes were the social, scholar and familial functioning of these adolescents. They also discussed the parental mental illness, their perception of the impacts on their life and the learning they did through their experience.

Full textStimulating physical activity through active transportation is now a most relevant topic in urban planning with regard to public health. Indeed, half of teenagers in the province of Quebec do not reach the recommended level of physical activity to positively impact their health. Walking and biking have been identified as potential resources to increase physical activity. In this context, this thesis in urban planning and regional development combines quantitative, qualitative and spatial approaches in order to examine the share of active transportation in the daily mobility of teenagers and the influence of the built environment in increasing it. The thesis is supported by three types of analyzes: the 2001 origin-destination survey among 5784 adolescents in the Quebec City metropolitan area, an Internet survey with 173 fourth year high school students from five schools in the Quebec metro area, and by online trip and daily activity logs completed by 40 of the 173 adolescents. The results show a high dependency on motorized transportation which was found to be closely related to the location of the home, school, and to the geographical dispersion of the places they visit. The decision to attend a high school for its good reputation or a specialized program seems to be made without much concern to the long travel distance from the home and heavy reliance on motorized transportation it may generate. The results also show that teenagers walk to a greater number of places in the vicinity of their school compared to their home. Urban form and land use are playing active role in stimulating walking around schools, namely the presence of sidewalks, street connectivity and the presence of shops with low nutritional quality food supplies. Analyzing teenagers’ perceptions of what is a walkable street revealed that the speed and density of motorized traffic stand as barriers against walking. Their effective action space reached by foot around the school was found to be more reduced than what the delimitation of walkable districts around the home used in most of the reviewed studies. Finally, their global weekly action space were classified into a typology which is discussed in relationship to the distances they travel, their use of active transports, their household characteristics, their attachment to their neighborhood and finally, their perception of transport modes.

Full textSocial cognition refers to a set of cognitive functions specialized in the processing of social stimuli, allowing us to interact adequately with others. Adolescence is a developmental stage in which these cognitive functions are particularly solicited, as social relationships increase in importance and complexity. It is also a time when hormonal and brain changes are very likely to modulate cognitive functioning. However, very little is known about the ability to decode and interpret social information at this age, and even less about how brain damage can alter these functions. Thus, the main objective of this thesis was to better understand the functioning of social cognition in adolescence by examining it from various angles. Using neuropsychological measures, the first study was able to demonstrate a lower capacity to recognize emotional facial expressions in adolescents compared to adults, but a similar ability to put oneself in the perspective of a character and infer various mental states. Paradoxically, a self-reported empathy questionnaire revealed a lower tendency to take the perspective of others in adolescents, overall suggesting a possible distinction between the ability to put oneself in the place of others when measured directly and the propensity to do so in real life. The second study then demonstrated that a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury sustained during adolescence further alters this tendency to take the perspective of others in everyday life, as reported in the empathy questionnaire. The third study therefore used an experimental paradigm that is closer to real-life social interactions and examined, through functional neuroimaging, the empathic response of adolescents and adults towards social exclusion. The results showed that in such a context, adolescents are less likely to take the perspective of others, to feel their distress, and to act prosocially. The data of this thesis can thus be integrated into a detailed picture of social cognition in adolescence by specifying the functions that appear developed, those that are not fully developed, and those that are most likely to be compromised by a brain injury. Beyond these findings, the thesis has also highlighted a lower tendency to use these cognitive resources in a context where other peers are present. Ultimately, the results emphasize the importance of intervening on social cognition at this age, both in adolescents with normal development and those whose development can be compromised by brain damage.
