Ka oopikihtamashook’ (adoption) describes the way Métis people incorporated related and non-related individuals into their families and community. This practice went beyond genetics and identified value in virtue in order to build relationships and grow the Métis Nation. Underscoring this process was the concept of wahkootowin, a unique Indigenous approach to creating and maintaining relationships. The adoption of orphaned relatives, for instance, allowed adopted parents to pass on Métis culture and beliefs. In addition, 19th century archival records and oral histories indicate that adoption o

Thirteen adoptive families participated in the study. Qualitative data regarding each individual's perception of the adoption experience was obtained through semi-structured interviews. When this transracial family is a single-parent family, it could be assumed that the challenges the family faces will be even more. Consequently, the need developed to investigate characteristics and family patterns which contribute to family adaptation in crises in the single-parent family where a child from a different race than the parent has been adopted.

Abstract:
AbstractThe schooling process has become more widespread among the Portuguese Roma population since 1974, with the end of the Estado Novo dictatorship and the establishment of democracy. Nevertheless, the Roma nomadism or semi-nomadism, financial shortcomings and the absence of social/cultural/family stimuli are some of the reasons that explain their low school attendance rates. Only in the last decades has such attendance increased, as a result of the implementation of several public policies, particularly of the Social Integration Income. This social policy, implemented in 1996, introduced important changes in this population, especially in areas such as schooling, personal hygiene, housing, health, or sedentism.Recent research has shown an increase in the educational level of the Roma population, but school dropouts and failure remain high. This tendency was also studied in the northeast of Portugal, in a PhD thesis about the relationships between the Roma and school. In the present research work, a qualitative methodology was adopted, using direct and participant observation, as well as interviews to some Roma parents and non-Roma teachers. Both groups emphasize the main difficulties of Roma children at school. The conclusions show that several factors affect these students’ schooling nowadays, especially poor housing conditions, parents’ illiteracy or low schooling, lack of daily study monitoring at home, absence of models in their environment, non-attendance of pre-school, and discrimination against them.

Abstract:
Born to an American man and Vietnamese woman in 1970, Trista immigrated to the United States and was adopted by a young American couple, Nancy and Chuck Kalan, in 1973 after she and her younger brother, Jeffrey, spent a year in the care of a Vietnamese foster family. Although Nancy would eagerly accept and manage the details of Trista’s adoption, her husband, a veteran of the Vietnam War, had initiated their plans. Trista recalled her fear and shyness on meeting her new parents. “When I first saw my father, I cried,” she explained, “because he had a full beard and I wasn’t used to the facial hair.” Moreover, as a four-year-old, “I still had memories of my family,” she related. These memories would become less vivid over time as Trista learned English, became acquainted with American foods, and integrated into the mostly white community of Feasterville, Pennsylvania, but she retained cultural, political, and familial ties to Vietnam through regular contact with Jeffrey, who was adopted into the household of Trista’s aunt and raised as her cousin, as well as her foster family, who departed Vietnam among a wave of refugees and resettled in the Kalans’ household in 1975. Despite relationships and exposure that could have reinforced a Vietnamese identity, she admitted, “I probably actually repressed any of my culture and heritage growing up because I just wanted to fit in.”...

Full text
Abstract:
The term “house of the mother” (bêt ’ēm) is an indigenous Hebrew kinship designation for the “uterine family.” Comprised of a mother and her biological and adopted children, the house of the mother is distinct within yet supportive of the house of the father upon which it depends. In its most basic form, a bêt ’ēm represented a social and spatial subunit nested within the larger house of the father. Four biblical texts that contain the phrase bêt ’ēm (Gen 24:28; Song 3:4; 8:2; Ruth 1:8), and one additional biblical text, Gen 34, contain explicit cues that evoke the house of the mother. Taken together, the house-of-the-mother texts demonstrate that this was a space and a kinship unit associated with the marriage negotiations for a daughter who would marry out of her birth home and into the house of her husband. Uterine brothers played key roles in these negotiations and maintained economically significant relationships with their married sisters for life.
