Abstract:
This chapter addresses how adoptive parents think about nature versus nurture, and whether and how these ideas change across their children’s life course. It explores how parents talk about the complex issue of similarities and differences between themselves and their adopted children—both those that may be immediately visible (e.g., skin color, hair), even early on in parenting, and those that are not as apparent until later on (e.g., abilities and interests). It considers whether and how adoptive parents invoke birth parents to help children to understand, make sense of, accept, and/or experience pride in aspects of themselves that may not be mirrored in their adoptive parents. Furthermore, the chapter explores how parents anticipate, make sense of, and address challenges in the domains of mental health and physical health in the context of varying levels of contact with and knowledge of birth family.

An essay in which Winnicott expresses his belief that every adopted child needs to be told he or she is adopted as soon as possible. Because of the circumstances of their birth, when older, they will need definite information about sex and their own origins which the biological child can acquire in a more haphazard way. Because they are dealing with the child’s whole being adoptive parents must be more aware of what child development is about, and much more than parents who are caring for their own children. The psychological needs of adopted children must be considered even when they are healthy.

The present study interviewed 14 preschool teachers to perceive their knowledge in gadget usage, sedentary behaviour and social skills among preschoolers. Besides that, teaching methods and teachers' opinions on gadget usage were also discussed. Inductive analysis (IA) revealed that parents habitually offer children gadgets at home. Also, the teachers expressed a positive opinion on gadget usage where preschoolers simply learn from media and gadget's applications. However, the teachers asserted that usage time needs to be controlled and the amount of usage depends on the role of parents and teachers. Abstract:
Parents hold beliefs not only about specific aspects of their children’s development (the focus of most of the remaining chapters) but also about the general processes through which such developments come about. So, too, do developmental psychologists. This chapter addresses the fit between what parents believe and what psychologists have concluded, concentrating especially on two issues. The nature–nurture issue concerns the interplay of biological and environmental factors in the determination of development, including beliefs about the relative importance of the two forces and about particular environmental contributors, including parents. The continuity–discontinuity issue concerns the extent to which psychological functioning is characterized by consistency or change. As applied to development, the question is whether developmental change is a matter of incremental, quantitative change or whether qualitative change also occurs. As applied to children’s competencies and characteristics, the question is whether children’s behavior and the rules that govern it are consistent or variable across different tasks and different contexts.

Abstract:
The chapter on the psychodynamic aspects of migration explains the parallels between the process of migration and of life and human development, which can be understood as a series of attachments and separations that can lead to personal growth but involve mourning for what is lost and forming new attachments. It explains the concept of culture shock and the process of transformation of the identity of the immigrant, the dynamics involved in acquiring a new language, and the psychodynamic challenges of starting a life in the new host country. It explains the psychological defenses that the immigrant may put in place to deal with the massive losses of migration and adapt to the new country, such as the loss of past human connections and material possessions, as well as the loss of a familiar climate and geography. It discusses the family dynamics of leaving children behind in the care of relatives and later reunifications with the immigrant parents in the new host country. The chapter offers treatment recommendations to deal with these issues. The chapter is also illustrated with case studies.
