Abstract:
The focus of this study was to investigate the current underground conventional mining systems used in the platinum mining industry and to design a mine production planning system to optimise the conventional operations - Anglo Platinum specific. The maximum steady state micro output levels of underground mines were determined from a mining and engineering perspective and the GAP, or output potential compared to the current output levels, was established. All the production facility's requirements with regard to services, equipment and infrastructure to achieve optimum production levels were calculated from first principles and a modelling tool for technical and mining optimisation evaluations was designed for use by the operations. Furthermore, an analysis of the main infrastructure or so-called "ongoing capital development" was done as a means to determine the maximum sustainable shaft capacities. With the main objective being to determine the existing production GAP and thus the requirements to fill this GAP, a picture of the current conditions, equipment capacities and output levels were determined. For this purpose, specific checklists were designed to capture all the relevant information. It was sub-divided in such a way that inputs could be made in a logical sequence to prevent backtracking exercises. The existing infrastructure and equipment were rated on a scale ranging from zero to ten with zero meaning non-existent and ten being brand new. The involvement of the site personnel throughout the entire process is a crucial part of the exercise as buy-in and ownership are probably the most important aspects of any implementation process. This buy-in was achieved through planning workshops and presentations where real examples from the audience where modelled. Members were allowed to change parameters and outcomes were debated. The systematic logical approach and the suite of practical outputs sold the system during every session held. Support came from all functions including mine design specialists and ore resource managers using different systems. The mining industry is the largest source of foreign income for South Africa and it is also the main source of employment with Anglo Platinum employing in the region of forty thousand employees1 and contractors. Reef deposits are not replaceable and it is in the interest of all stakeholders to extract every unit in the most efficient manner. Mines require vast amounts of capital and with risks like fluctuating metal prices, exchange rates, rising costs, labour unrest and geological uncertainties, it is important to have optimum planning and management systems in place. This project focused on how to optimise the output levels of current operations thus minimizing all of the mining-related risks in a direct or indirect manner. It is a simple means to leap closer to mining professionalism in first-world countries. The GAP varied between the different operations and ranged between overproduction and 60% below the optimum potential. On average it was 50% below optimum performance levels2. It has to be noted that these observations are based on half levels outputs and not on shaft capacities. In other words, where shafts are operating at design capacities, the same production can be obtained by manning half the amount of levels implicating cost savings instead of increased production. The current planning practices are thus not adequate to truly optimise the operations.

Abstract:
Classroom observation - particularly the post observation conference - is one of the most important aspects of staff development. The headmaster should create the climate in which the teacher has scope for self-development. During and especially after the class observation, it is imperative that the headmaster provides a restful, relaxed atmosphere, particularly for the post observation conference. This conference is of the utmost importance, as it provides feedback to the teacher on how another knowledgeable person experiences his presentation of a lesson. This research initially focused on staff development, what it entails and how it can be utilized by headmasters in schools. A closer look was taken at the post observation conference after a classroom observation, a questionnaire was distributed among the headmasters of various schools and the paper closes with recommendations and definite guidelines to headmasters. It is important for the school to be a pleasant working environment, where mutual respect and trust should exist. In such a climate, it is possible for the headmaster, during the post observation conference, to make recommendations and give advice without causing any hurt-feelings, enabling the teacher to develop professionally. A staff development plan with clear goals and target dates should ultimately be compiled.

Abstract:
Personal financial management is an integrated part of modern man's everyday life. It does not only involve spending his monthly income. It comprises his outlook on life, the way he handles all his financial affairs as well as the way he goes about minimizing his financial risks. The financial plan that the individual has to provide for his retirement, to take care of his dependants as well as the way that the assets he acquired during this lifetime, must be distributed after his death, also forms part of this personal financial management. The main purpose of the study is to determine the levels of personal financial management practiced by employees of NWK Limited, as well as to determine the need for guidance in this regard. The following aspects of personal financial management are researched in chapter 2. These aspects were used to determine to what extent personal financial management was performed by having the study population anonymously complete a customized questionnaire. The following aspects were applied: * Attitude towards money. * Management style with regards to money. * Time value of money. * The financial plan. * Investments. The results of the study confirmed that there is a definite need for guidance with regard to personal financial management, especially under the younger employees as well as the personnel in the lower job levels of the company. Through the rendering of a tailored guidance programme, productivity as well as the quality of life, especially after retirement, could be improved significantly.

Abstract:
By means of a literature study it was determined that the role of the principal has changed dramatically over the last few years, from head teacher in the past to manager of a complex organisation. The most important management tasks of the principal were enlightened and it was concluded that principals preferably should possess management experience and management qualifications to cope with their task. It was stated that principals must never stagnate but that they should develop themselves at professional level. To cope with the changes they should regularly attend in-service training courses on educational management. Self-development by principals should eventually lead to the acquiring of a post degree in educational management. From the empirical investigation undertaken, it was determined that the majority of secondary school principals in Lebowa are not in the possession of management qualifications. Most of the principals are, however, academically well-qualified and are busy studying. Finally the assumption was made that the task of the principal in Lebowa must be very difficult due to numerous problems such as lack of infrastructure in schools and the turmoil in which the activists have plunged the entire educational system. Certain recommendations were made and guidelines were given on management development for principals in Lebowa.

Abstract:
This research is done with focus on a children' s home child, who is deviated by factors out of his control, but who is helped to unfurl to adulthood, so that he can have the same future vision as other children. where he has to compete to a position in a fast developing labour market. The aim of this study, by way of literature study, and supported by emperical research is to determine what the study attitude of a children' s home child is. This study attitude is analysed according to factors which give direction to it, especially the influence of personality on study attitudes. Background knowledge is gained about personality and the etiology/origin of personality characteristics, with the meaning that educators in their guidance of children to optimum personality development also bearing the study attitudes in mind. An attitude inventory is developed and implemented in order to obtain more information about the study attitudes of children' s home children in the senior primary school phase. Children from one children' s home were involved in this study after the attitude inventory' s reliability and validity was tested at another children' s home. The information obtained is statistically revised by the statistics consultation services ofthe PU for CHO. The results ofthe investigation was thereafter analysed to give positive recommendation to the practise and to do further research. Throughout this study reference to he means he/she, his means hislhers and him meaning him/her.

Presently education in South Africa is undergoing major changes. These changes immediately lead to resistance regarding change. Therefore, resistance is a part of the change process. The purpose of this study was to determine: * What the nature and essence of resistance entail. * Which external and internal factors, according to the study of literature, lead to resistance regarding change, and to categorise these. * To determine by means of the empirical research to which extent internal and external factors can be observed and to which degree they play a role in staff members' resistance behaviour regarding change in education. * From a first point of view resistance occurs when a radical change is brought about. Resistance is a reaction to change and an endeavour to retain the status quo. From a second perspective resistance occurs in the absence of change. This research focuses on the first perspective. Internal factors include, amongst others, individual aspects such as personality factors, motivation, fear, skills and abilities. External factors include, amongst others, factors in die cultural environment and the social system, which include the school as organisation. A statistical survey has been made according to answers derived from questionnaires which have been sent to principals. The empirical data has been interpreted and certain deductions have been made and findings reached. Amongst others, it has been found that most internal and external factors have been observed to a lesser extent in schools and that they played a lesser role in staff members' resistance behaviour. Those factors which played a greater role have been highlighted and discussed briefly. From these findings it is clear that presently there is little resistance to change in secondary schools under control of the OFS Education Department. The recommendations also refer to the initial training of teachers and the in-service training of principals in strategies and methods to manage resistance to change. To implement change successfully, principals and their management teams will have to be equipped to identify resistance factors and handle them effectively.

Abstract:
The major purpose of this study was to assess which of the two school practice models is the most efficient for the training of first year student teachers at the "Durbanse Onderwyskollege". The following hypothesis for the empirical research was tested: There will be a difference in the achievements in lesson presentation by a group of first year students (experimental group) that followed the "Wednesday practice and the block observation" school practice model and another group of first year students (control group) that followed the "block practice and the Wednesday observation" school practice model at the "Durbanse Onderwyskollege" in 1983. The experimental design chosen was a pre-test/post-test true experimental design with randomization. From a homogeneous population of 114 male and female first year students enrolled at the "Durbanse Onderwyskollege" in 1983, two groups were selected at random to serve as experimental and control groups. The experimental group followed the Wednesday practice and the block observation teaching practice model, while the control group followed the block practice and the Wednesday observation teaching practice model. It should be noted that a pre-test and three post-tests were used in the research. Marks obtained in the subject Afrikaans during the evaluation lessons were used for the pre-test and post-tests. The pre-test was also used to establish whether the achievements of both the experimental and the control groups in the subject Afrikaans were on an equal basis before commencing with the research programme concerning the two teaching practice models. At the end of the teaching practice period (the second and third school terms of 1983) at the 13 primary schools, the pre-test and post-test marks obtained in the subject Afrikaans of the experimental and the control groups, were compared. No significant differences were found in the improved achievements of the experimental and control groups. Both the teaching practice models made a positive contribution towards the improved achievements of the experimental and the control groups. It was also found that block observation was as efficient as block practice in improving the achievements of both the experimental group and the control group respectively. Wednesday practice brought about an improvement in the achievements of the experimental group, while Wednesday observation resulted in a decrease in the achievements of the control group. The conclusion was reached that Wednesday observation should not be included in any school practice model. The BMOP30 computer programme for parametric statistics was used for the statistical analysis of the data obtained during the teaching practice programme at the 13 primary schools. A comprehensive questionnaire (which deals mainly with the choice between block practice or Wednesday practice) was sent to all persons involved in the research, after the teaching practice programme was completed. The questionnaire consisted of 50 "closed" questions and 6 "open" questions. The results of the questionnaire indicated clearly that the majority of the respondents (10 headmasters, 14 lecturers, 60 teachers and 114 first year students) favoured: (1) block practice; (2) block observation; (3) an observation period for first year student teachers; (4) that first year student teachers should be involved in a program of lesson presentation as well as a program of observation during teaching practice. The majority of the respondents rejected the idea that first year student teachers should only be involved in a programme of observation during teaching practice. The answers in percentages of the "closed" questions were supplied by the BMDP4F computer programme. On the grounds of results of the statistical analysis and of the questionnaire, the hypothesis for the empirical research was rejected. The Wednesday practice and block observation teaching practice model was found to be as efficient as the block practice and Wednesday observation teaching practice model. in improving the achievements of both the experimental group and the control group respectively. As a result the conclusion of this study is that first year student teachers at the “Durbanse Onderwyskollege" in 1983 were effectively trained by the application of both the teaching practice models as described in this thesis.

Abstract:
With the growth of wireless networks and the increase in personal internet use for a wide diversity of applications, the importance of the quality of service (QoS) delivered to clients has become of great importance. In order to evaluate QoS, this study explores the application of the linear response surface analysis (LRSA) technique as an evaluation tool for QoS factors such as Throughput and Delay. An 802.11n prototype wireless network is constructed in order to capture QoS data that is then used to construct LRSA models in order to evaluate the QoS factors. The LRSA models are maximised and minimised while constraining specific measured QoS factors and the subsequent results are analysed. Based on this analysis, recommendations for the improvement of wireless networks are made as well as the use of the LRSA technique to evaluate QoS within a wireless network.

Abstract:
The main focus of this thesis will be on the constrained two dimensional guillotine-cut cuffing stock (C2DGC) problem. Stock cutting involves the process of cutting certain small demand items from a larger object. During this process, waste material is generated, which is called trim loss. The cutting stock problem presents itself in many industrial processes where the cutting of material is concerned, for instance the cutting of wood in the furniture industry, the cutting of glass and plastic sheets in the glass industry, the cutting of paper in the cardboard industry and the cutting of steel bars in metallurgy, to name but a few. The cutting stock problem aims to find one or more solutions to a cutting problem so that the optimal amount of the stock sheet is utilized. This, in turn, implies that the trim loss (waste) will be kept to a minimum. Artificial intelligence search methods as well as existing exact C2DGC problem solution methods are investigated and evaluated critically. Different artificial intelligence search methods are then combined with the existing C2DGC problem solution methods, forming feasible algorithms to solve C2DGC problems. Existing C2DGC problem solution methods are also enhanced using innovative ideas. Numerical tests are then conducted to test the effectiveness and efficiency of each original and enhanced algorithm.

An investigation into stress experience and the use of coping skills by departemental heads of schools: guidelines for support. Stress occurs when one's perception of demands exceeds his perception of his abilities to meet them. Except for work related demands, a variety of demands and threats in the environment have to be faced continuously. As a result stress is created that manifest in people's behavior, work efficiency and socialization. In general, the education profession is considered among the most stressful careers in the world. This also applies to the South African educational system. U'hm teachers experience stress, it has a negative effect on their beloved ones. colleagues and the learners. Therefore teacher stress has a negative effect on the teaching system in general. Thus teacher stress can be considered to be a national problem. The real situation of teachers in South Africa was determined by means of an empirical study that \\as complimented by a qualitative investigation. In this study. stress is dealt with from the educational psychology. However. stress is a holistic multi-dimensional concept that can only by understood at best when it is approached from a multi-professional point of view. Equally all the actions to cope with stress are rnultidimensional actions. This research aims to develop among teachers an awareness of stress manifestations. with the purpose to identi6 and control stressors. These actions are strengthened by appropriate adaptations in life style and the management of resources. A comprehensive support program is suggested to guide teachers towards an understanding and control of stress. and the establishment of a social support system. while serious manifestations of stress should be addressed by means of professional services. Abstract:
Conservation and management of the ecology of natural areas has become a prerequisite for mining companies in South Africa. Systematic conservation planning provides a useful tool for land–use planning and impact assessment, particularly in the mining industry. A study was therefore undertaken to provide sufficient, spatially explicit biodiversity and veld condition information to aid in the development and establishment of an official conservation plan for the leased mining area of Impala Platinum. By identifying areas with high plant diversity or endemism and by assessing veld conditions as well as grazing and browsing capacities, recommendations could be made towards management strategies and potential future land–use practices. The licensed mining area, north of Rustenburg, covers 29334 ha and includes 14 operational shafts. The area was stratified into three main categories based on landscape types namely: norite koppies; thornveld and rehabilitated areas. The Braun Blanquet approach was followed to sample 139 stratified random relevés. Additional computer software packages were used for capturing, processing and presentation of the phytosociological data (TURBOVEG) as well as a visual editor for phytosociological tables (MEGATAB). Ordinations were subsequently performed to confirm the plant communities and illustrate possible environmental gradients, using multivariate statistic analyses (CANOCO). Four plant communities with two subcommunities were identified and described in both the norite koppies and thornveld respectively while three plant communities with three sub–communities were identified in the rehabilitated areas. Specific environmental factors that influence plant community structure and composition in the norite koppies were the aspect and percentage of soil surface rockiness while soil types proved to be the distinguishing factor in the thornveld. The distribution of plant communities in the rehabilitated areas is mainly due to anthropogenic influences rather than any environmental factors. The Fixed Point Monitoring of Vegetation Methodology– FIXMOVE was then used to sample 32 stratified random survey plots in four selected plant communities in order to quantify and compare veld conditions as well as grazing and browsing capacities. The determination of landscape functionality served to support these quantitative results. The Landscape Function Analysis (LFA) method was used for this purpose. Multivariate statistic analyses (CANOCO) were used to indicate possible degradation gradients between the plant communities. Conclusions regarding conservation and management units were reached by interpreting the quantitative data in accordance with the phytosociological results and recommendations could then be made. All the norite koppies plant communities were recommended as areas for The Fixed Point Monitoring of Vegetation Methodology– FIXMOVE was then used to sample 32 stratified random survey plots in four selected plant communities in order to quantify and compare veld conditions as well as grazing and browsing capacities. The determination of landscape functionality served to support these quantitative results. The Landscape Function Analysis (LFA) method was used for this purpose. The Eragrostis rigidior–Ziziphus mucronata and Acacia caffra–Bothriochloa insculpta Communities in the thornveld showed the best potential for browsing and grazing practices but were also recommended for conservation because of their high species diversity and anthropogenic threats. The high landscape functionality, veld condition and grazing capacity of the Aristida bipartita–Bothriochloa insculpta Community indicated that the rehabilitation of the opencast mining areas had been relatively successful at the time of the surveys. Selected parts of the Indigofera heterotricha–Aristida bipartita Community were also recommended for conservation and management in the form of controlled and more effective grazing strategies were recommended for the rest of the thornveld.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of selected extractive agents for the separation of n-propanol and 2-butanol was evaluated with the aid of a circulation vapour-liquid equilibrium still. The difference in boiling points between n-propanol and 2-butanol is 2,1 oC and the corresponding relative volatility is 1,09. The extractive agents and respective relative volatilities of n-propanol achieved were correlated with the physical properties of the pure extractive agent. In the presence of a high-boiling hydrocarbon cut, White oil 2 (C12 - C14 isoparaffin), a relative volatility of 1,57 was achieved. This significantly improves the potential to separate n-propanol from 2-butanol. Hydrogen bonding and polarity mainly contribute to the selectivity of an extractive agent. This result is in agreement with the findings of Yeh ( 1984). Accurate selection can be made using physical properties and can be applied to polar systems in general. The most promising extractive agent, White oil 2, was evaluated and found feasible on pilot plant scale. This evaluation was performed on a close-boiling Fischer-Tropsch alcohol mixture. This extractive distillation was done on a 32 theoretical plate distillation column and a n-propanol purity of 99,85% was achieved. Binary interaction parameters from VLE data were determined with UNIQUAC. These parameters were employed for simulation purposes of the extractive distillation column. Results obtained from modelling of the extractive distillation column furnished good predictions and were in agreement with experimental results.

Adriaan van Roomen (1561-1615), matemático e médico renascentista, escreveu alguns trabalhos referentes à astronomia, dentre os quais podemos citar a sua Ouranographia sive caeli descriptio (1591). Neste trabalho, apresentamos a primeira tradução da Ouranographia direta do latim para o português e acrescentamos notas e comentários acerca dos assuntos tratados em alguns dos capítulos da obra. Na Ouranographia, percebemos claramente o entrelaçamento entre diversas áreas da ciência, não só no que consideramos como matemática e astronomia, mas também no que diz respeito à astrologia, à filosofia e à história. A Ouranographia de van Roomen é constituída por três livros: no liber primus, descreve genericamente a máquina celeste, sua matéria e forma, seus movimentos e orbes; no liber secundus, descreve o primeiro céu e as linhas e círculos celestes que usamos para nos referenciar estando aqui da Terra; no liber tertius, explica o primeiro móvel, seus círculos e movimentos. Abstract: During the Middle Ages the astronomy was studied as one of the disciplines of the quadrivium, part of the liberal arts where they approached the "math", and in the Renaissance the study of astronomy as part of the "mathematical disciplines" went even on for some time and several scholars have continued to devote himself to the publication of works on the subject. Adriaan van Roomen (1561-1615), renaissance mathematician and physician, wrote several works about to astronomy, among which we mention its Ouranographia sive caeli descriptio (1591). In this work we present the first direct translation from Latin to Portuguese of the Ouranographia and add notes and comments on the issues addressed in some of the chapters of the work. In the Ouranographia, we clearly see the interconnectedness of different fields of science, not only in what we consider as mathematics and astronomy, but also with regard to astrology, philosophy and history. The van Roomen' Ouranographia consists of three books: in the liber primus, describes generally the heaven machine, its matter and form, their movements and orbs; in the liber secundus, describes the heaven first and the celestial circles and lines that we use to refer being here on Earth, in the liber tertius, explains the mobile first, their movements and circles. Villa Adriana dal 1999 è entrata a far parte della Lista del Patrimonio Mondiale dell’UNESCO, riconosciuta quale mirabile sintesi della cultura greco-romana. La Villa, pur essendo stata oggetto di studi e disegni per molti secoli, continua a celare luoghi misteriosi e incompresi. L’area anche detta del Giardino Segreto di Adriano è sicuramente uno di questi luoghi, mai entrata a far parte del percorso di visita a causa della presenza di un campeggio realizzato negli anni cinquanta; oggi le archeologie romane e i ruderi del campeggio appaiono come oggetti abbandonati in un conflitto irrisolto. Il progetto propone di ridare forma a questo luogo, attraverso un percorso che presenta la successione degli spazi che componevano il Giardino, ricreando le scenografie ed il rapporto che esisteva fra loro.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent the Lordship of Christ is a reality in the life and faith of Christians in the South African township of Soshanguve, north-west of Pretoria. The study is based on empirical research conducted in Soshanguve between 1996 and 1999, among members of the following three denominations: the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Zion Christian Church, and a group of Pentecostal and charismatic churches. During the first phase the research had a predominantly quantitative nature (survey research). The second phase involved a qualitative research (in depth-interviews, analysis of written documents and sermons). After an introductory chapter and a chapter giving the necessary background, chapter 3 describes the survey research, and chapters 4 to 6 examine the Lordship of Christ as it functions in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Zion Christian Church and the Pentecostal/charismatic churches respectively. This research shows that in the faith of many church members the Lordship of Jesus Christ is a vague notion. It is accepted that Jesus Christ has died for our sins in the past, but it is less clear what He is doing presently. The living Christ is a remote figure in the faith of the majority of church members. The gap which is left, is filled by the laws of the church and/or the leadership of the church. Chapter 7 gives an analysis of the results. It appears that several backgrounds have to be taken into account: (1) the influence of African traditional religion, (2) the influence of Western secularism, (3) the influence of specific doctrinal tenets of the given denomination. Chapter 8 offers a Biblical perspective on aspects which have to be dealt with in order to strengthen the notion of the Lordship of Christ in the life and faith of Christians. These are: the concept of God, the concept of salvation, the person of Christ, the Lordship of Christ over the life of the individual believer, and the Lordship of Christ over the world.

A presente dissertação, no âmbito da literatura brasileira contemporânea, com base, sobretudo, em Azul-corvo e Hanói, tem como objetivo investigar as diferentes figurações da morte na obra de Adriana Lisboa. Este trabajo, em el ambito de la literatura brasileña contemporánea, basado principalmente en Azul-Corvo y Hanói, tiene como objetivo investigar las diferentes figuraciones de la muerte en la obra de Adriana Lisboa. Cómo la interrupción definitiva de la vida humana se ha convertido en un tema prohibido en la sociedad de consumo capitalista, las obras de la autora abordan la dificuldad, cada vez mayor, que los seres humanos tienen en lidar con la cuestión de la finitud, pero sugieren que el diálogo entre la literatura y otras artes puede hacer que nuestro destino se torne más suave, pués más importante que la llegada está el aprendizado de la caminada, que de acuerdo a las percepciones y la sensibilidad de cada individuo establecen el tono del significado de la muerte. En las obras de la autora, el tema de la muerte converge a reflexionar sobre la fugacidad del ser con el tiempo inevitable, el poder transformador de la memoria y el amor a la vida y el material de desprendimiento.

A análise aborda como a protagonista Vanja encara sua identidade e seu pertencimento após partir do Brasil para os Estados Unidos, em busca do pai. O objetivo é contemplar as formas pelas quais sua vida é afetada pelo contexto migratório no país estrangeiro, do deslocamento inicial à criação de novas formas de pertencimento. O objetivo final deste trabalho é refletir sobre como o romance Azul-Corvo contribui para a compreensão de identidade e pertencimento como processo dinâmico em um contexto global.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is an investigation into the relationship between photorealistic painting and specific devices used to aid the artist in mediating the real. The term 'reality' is negotiated and a hybrid theoretical approach to photorealism, including mimesis and semiotics, is suggested. Through careful analysis of Vermeer's suspected use of the camera obscura, I argue that camera vision already started in the 17th century, thus signalling the dramatic shift from the classical Cartesian perspective scopic regime to the model of vision offered by the camera long before the advent of photography. I suggest that contemporary photorealist painters do not just merely and objectively copy, but use photographic source material with a sophisticated awareness in response to a rapidly changing world. Through an examination of the way in which the camera obscura and photographic camera are used in the works of four artists, I suggest that a symbiotic relationship of subtle tensions between painting and photographic technology emerges. This results in visions of the painted real that may be meaningful to contemporary society and have the ability to emotionally affect the viewer.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis ondersoek die verhouding tussen fotorealistiese skilderkuns en die spesifieke metodes wat die kunstenaar se vertolking van die werklikheid vergemaklik. Die term, 'realiteit' word krities oorweeg te midde van 'n saamgestelde teoretiese aanslag tot fotorealisme wat mimesis en semiotiek insluit. Deur 'n noukeurige analise van Vermeer se oënskynlike gebruik van die camera obscura, hou ek voor dat fotografiese sig reeds sedert die 17e eeu teenwoordig is. Hierdie gewaarwording dui op 'n dramatiese skuif vanaf 'n klassieke, Kartesiaanse perspektief en skopiese regime tot die model van visie gebied deur die kamera, lank voor die ontwikkeling van fotografie. Ek stel voor dat kontemporêre fotorealistiese skilders nie bloot objektief kopieër nie, maar fotografiese verwysings met 'n gesofistikeerde bewussyn in reaksie tot 'n vinnigveranderende wêreld gebruik. Deur 'n ondersoek na die wyse waarop die camera obscura en fotografiese kamera in die werke van vier kunstenaars gebruik word, stel ek voor dat 'n simbiotiese verhouding die subtiele spanning tussen skilderkuns en fotografiese tegnologie meemaak. PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO
O objetivo principal desta tese é analisar o desenvolvimento vocal da cantora Adriana Calcanhotto e o modo como ela imprime uma marca rasurante em suas interpretações. Este processo se efetua por meio de um intercâmbio com os cinco círculos semióticos estabelecidos por Júlio Diniz: a tradição sentimental e exagerada da música brasileira nos anos 40 e 50, o distúrbio geracional e sonoro das guitarras e cabelos compridos da Jovem Guarda, o minimalismo das ricas formas poéticas, harmônicas e melódicas da Bossa Nova e o engajamento barulhento e transformador das músicas de protesto. Pretende-se avaliar como se dá o desempenho performático da artista, a maneira como ela explicita o desenvolvimento de suas performances cênicas em seus shows, que revelam um forte diálogo com outras categorias artísticas, como a literatura e as artes plásticas. Seu percurso criativo demonstra uma busca acentuada por uma estética minimalista, que desponta tanto em sua expressividade vocal, quanto na manifestação corporal. Analisa-se, ainda, a criação do heterônimo-máscara Partimpim, o qual explicita o trabalho da artista voltado para o universo infantil, em que ela compõe canções e elabora releituras que demonstram a predominância de uma concepção lúdica expressa sobretudo nos arranjos.
One of the objectives of this work is to analyse how process the acting voice of the singer Adriana Calcanhotto, and how does she makes a kind of signature between the influence of five semiotical circles created by Júlio Diniz: the exaggerated tradition of the sentimental feeling in brazilian songs from the ages of 40 and 50, the generation disturb of the sound of the electric guitar and long hair from Jovem Guarda, the minimalism of the rich forms of poetry, the harmony and melodic sound from Bossa Nova and the engaged noisy and the changes of songs of protest. Another propose is to consider how does she make her performances that shows a strong dialogue between other kinds of art as literature and plastical art. Her creative way that shows how does she work to find a minimalism and esthetic form. The way she express her expressivity of voice and body. The creation of her heteronym or mask Partimpim shows her work with the child universe, she compose songs and makes new versions that shows the ludic conception of the arrangements.

In this thesis, we analyze the lyrical features present in Adriana Calcanhotto songs, after having enjoyed several of his songs. We chose a set of them to develop the considerations that we propose on poem, rhythm, sound, music and lyrics, as well as other musical and literary structures. We have seen how the work of this artist is made up: their life histories, the influences that had early in his career, his unique musicality, the correspondences between authors and arts. We weave considerations on literary and musical structures that are interconnected, not to form another art, but to diffuse each as such because each art remains in its compositional artistic envelope. By meshing the interpreter develops between the scholarly and the popular, their songs gain sophistication and uniqueness through their own artistic style. Thus, the relationship of dialogue established between the two arts justify our study, noting the presentation of the invariants of the songs analyzed for its literary and musical nature.
Nesta dissertação, analisamos as características líricas presentes nas músicas de Adriana Calcanhotto, após termos apreciado diversas de suas canções. Escolhemos um conjunto delas para desenvolver as considerações que propomos sobre poema, ritmo, som, letra e música, além de outras estruturas musicais e literárias. Vimos como a obra dessa artista se compõe: sua trajetória biográfica, as influências que teve no início de sua carreira, sua musicalidade singular, as correspondências entre autores e artes. Tecemos considerações sobre as estruturas literárias e musicais que se imbricam, não para formar outra arte, mas para se difundirem cada qual como tal, pois cada arte mantém-se no seu invólucro artístico composicional. Pelo entrosamento que a intérprete desenvolve entre o erudito e o popular, suas canções ganham sofisticação e singularidade por meio de um estilo artístico próprio. Assim, as relações de diálogo estabelecidas entre essas duas artes justificam nosso estudo, observando a apresentação das invariáveis das canções analisadas pela sua natureza literária e musical.
