Abstract:
This thesis explores the experiences of aging parents caring for adult children with acquired brain injury regarding future care needs. Seven parents representing four adult disabled children, were individually interviewed using the Family Support and Coping Interview. The parents then participated in three groups sessions to discuss the commonality of 'never-ending' parenthood. The parents, who average 70.9 years of age, have been sole caregivers for middle-aged children. Their displaced life cycle responsibilities, their vision of a solution and the need to socially publicize their predicament were major themes requiring advocacy with policy makers and government funders. Research into the care of those who cannot manage independent living is imperative, particularly as social thinking and fiscal policies espouse the benefits of the autonomous family.

Vilensky, Jesyca. "Exploring the experiences of mentally ill adult Jewish children caregiving for their aging parents." Thesis, Adler School of Professional Psychology, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10179058.

Full text
Abstract:

As care for the elderly continues to be a significant social concern, this study examines the experiences, gratifications, and frustrations of adult children suffering from a mental illness and become the primary caregivers of their aging parent within the home. In addition, the study explored the role of trauma as part of the adult children's decision to become the primary caregivers of their aging parent. Adult children and their aging parents were of Jewish descent and currently residing in a large metropolitan area. A total of 9 adult Jewish children, 6 males and 3 females, were recruited from a non-profit, community-funded social service agency for this qualitative study. The nine participants were asked to complete a short demographic questionnaire, asked general background information, and were administered a semi-structured caregiving interview. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and analyzed using grounded theory methodology.

The major themes that emerged from this qualitative study provide insight into the adult child's experience as a caregiver with respect to their caregiving responsibilities, additional assistance from outside agencies or individuals, issues related to mental health and wellness, positive and negative aspects of the caregiving role, religion, and loss. Minor themes that emerged in the data were developmental task achievement and the impact of legal difficulties on the experience of caregiving. The results indicate that the adult child's role as the primary caregiver likely fulfills a purpose in this mentally ill adult child's life. There seems to be a relationship between the adult child's lack of normative development within the life cycle and adopting the role of caregiver. This role is also influenced by other factors such as trauma/stress, social constriction, parenting style, lack of support, and co-dependency between adult and child. Therefore, this study was able to provide a greater understanding of the factors that contribute to the trend of mentally ill adult Jewish children taking on the caregiver role for their aging parents.

Hamon, Raeann R. Kunkle. "Filial responsibility expectations among adult child-older parent pairs." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53523.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study is an investigation of filial responsibility expectations endorsed by a randomly selected sample of 144 elderly parent-adult child pairs from the Harrisburg area of Pennsylvania. Descriptive statistics suggested that most older parents and adult children interpreted the filial role to include a great deal of emotional support and discussion of important matters and available resources. Both generations perceived living close and writing letters to parents on a weekly basis as less important. Parents were more likely to disapprove of receiving financial assistance from children, living with children, and having children adjust their work schedules to help them than were their offspring. Robinson's statistical measure of agreement, which examined the amount of consensus between generations, revealed that there was a moderate level of agreement between parents and their children on filial responsibility expectations. Multiple regression analyses indicated that amount of agreement on filial norms did not have an impact on parental well-being, however.

Abstract:

This study was designed to explore how the experience of past parental alienation and current estrangement from adult child(ren) affected aging alienated parents particularly in the domains of depression and life satisfaction. This study also explored the link between past parental alienation and late-life estrangement from adult child(ren). The sample of 65 participants responded to an online survey after responding to a recruitment flyer posted on Craig's List.

The results showed mild to moderate levels of depression and moderate dissatisfaction with life among the study participants. Higher levels of parental alienation were significantly associated with higher levels of depression and greater dissatisfaction with life. Participants also overwhelmingly reported that past parental alienation had contributed to their current estrangement from their adult child(ren).

Further research is needed on the impact of parental alienation on the well-being of aging parents.

Ziner, Andrew Scott. "On Parent-Child Relations: Toward the Construction of a Theory of Filial Exchange." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1986. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331914/.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation represents an initial attempt toward the construction of a general life cycle theory of parent-child relations. Emphasis was placed on the parent-adult child relationship with the onset of a filial crisis, e.g., due to illness. After the theory was described, two of the five propositions comprising this orientation (i.e., propositions four and five) were analyzed through a series of twenty-five hypotheses. The objectives of these hypotheses were (a) to analyze the relationship between the length of time involved in various patterns of filial responsibility and the likelihood that these patterns will become institutionalized as obligatory roles and (b) to determine how factors associated with these emergnt role obligations contribute to the cost of caregiving. A probability sample of 180 caregivers was obtained from within the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Multiple and partial correlation analyses and the use of Student's t revealed that the length of time involved as a caregiver was significantly related to the number of informal caregiving roles performed by adult children. In addition, results indicated that the length of involvement in each caregiving role examined (i.e., household care, transportation service, personal care, medical attention, meal preparation, financial management and mobility assistance) was significantly related to (a) the frequency of providing these services to an aged parent and (b) the level of responsibility in each service area except financial management (which tended to remain constant over time)• An adult child s level of obligation to ensure that caregiving services were provided was also significantly associated with the length of caregiving involvement. Furthermore, this study found tentative support for the contention that the social-psychological cost of providing care for a dependent parent was associated with (a) the frequency of providing transportation services and medical attention, (b) the number of informal caregiving activities performed and (c) the length of caregiver involvement. A set of three control variables (i.e., the household living arrangements and both the aged parent s and adult child's physical health status) were identified as significant contributors to the cost of caregiving. Based on the empirical results of this investigation, propositions four and five of the theoretical perspective presented in this dissertation were supported.

The intergenerational relationship between parents and adult children, such as living arrangement, contact frequency, financial support, has been one of the major issues in the sociology of the family. Previous researches on this issue seldom consider the relationship between adult children and parents-in-law. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore how marital power influences the relationship between adult children and aging parents or in-laws based on Taiwanese society. Using a multinomial logit model, the study analyzes the samples of married respondents from the PSFD (Panel Study of Family Dynamics). Two main discoveries are as follows. First, the relationship between adult children and elderly parents or in-laws is indeed affected by different kinds of marriage power, but the results are different between male and female. For female respondents, if the wife’s education or occupational status is higher than the husband’s, the wife may close to her native parents. On the contrary, the result is more complicated for male respondents. Second, for male respondents, the status between parents and in-laws also influence the relationship between husbands and parents or in-laws. To sum up, this thesis demonstrates that in Taiwanese society not only marital power but also ascribed status determines the intergenerational relationship. Furthermore, it may be necessary to consider parents-in-law when we discuss the intergenerational relationship between adult children and parents.

Prior studies of parent-child conflicts majorly focused on parent-adolescent interactions. However, in aging society today, communication and conflict issues and solutions are obviously different between adult child and teenager’ relationship with their parents. Therefore, we consider the uniqueness of adult children and the perspective of positive psychology for discussing the issues of parent-adult child conflict. This research uses the construct of “Integration of Cross-time Experience (ICE)”—the course that adult children to review and reframe early parent-children interactive experiences, including recalling memories of the relationship, openness and acceptance of the current relationship, and the imagination of the future relationship—and its effect on the relationship between adult children and aging parents. In this research, there were two studies to test the proposed hypotheses. Study 1 used questionnaires to explore the relationship between ICE and appreciation to parents, forbearance behaviors with parents and deepening in relationship with parents. Study 1 recruited 424 participants who were above 35 years old. 140 of them completed the father version questionnaire and 154 of them completed the mother version questionnaire.130 of them completed both version questionnaires. The results showed the scale of “Integration of Cross-time Experience” had good reliability and validity. It positively predicted appreciation, forbearance and relational deepening between adult children and aging parents, showing that the integration of the early-life memory in the parent-child interaction closely related to their relationship, making adult-children be willing to forbear their parents in possible future parent-child conflicts. Study 2 was an intervention program of ICE, incorporated with the expressive writing paradigm. 47 adult children rolled in and 26 of them completed the program. The result showed that the writing intervention of ICE promoted participants to review and reframe memories with their parents. The change score of ICE between pretest and posttest positively predicted the change score of appreciation, forbearance and relational deepening. The effect of ICE on appreciation, forbearance and relational deepening was consistent within two studies, indicating that the construct of ICE had both the theoretical and the practical value. As Taiwan transforming into an aged society, ICE is worthy further develop and apply in larger scale.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to study the effect of adult children's education on the health and economic wellbeing of their parents in old age. This dissertation contributes to the field of human capital theory through enhancing the understanding of the connections between adult children and parents in old age. It studies large nationally representative data sets in the US and China. The findings highlight the potential importance of pathways through which children’s human capital affects parents in later life and suggest that offspring’s human capital (education) is important for parental health and old-age support. This research has important implications for the amelioration of health disparities related to intergenerational inequality in both the U.S and China.

Lee, Eun-Kyong. "Intergenerational solidarity in Asian immigrant families : subtitle the experience of employed Canadians." Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/12813.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to examine the Asian perspective in regard to the intergenerational solidarity framework developed by Bengtson and his colleagues. Focusing on normative solidarity and functional solidarity within Asian families, adult children's provision of assistance to elderly relatives was investigated in relation to norms of filial responsibility. A subsample of 109 employed Asian immigrants in Canada was selected from a national survey of Work and Family conducted by CARNET (The Canadian Aging Research Network). The study tested three hypotheses: 1) stronger norms of filial responsibility (normative solidarity) are positively associated with higher levels and more hours of assistance provided to elderly relatives (functional solidarity); 2) older age at immigration and/or shorter length of residence (immigrant status) are positively associated with higher levels and more hours of assistance provided to elderly relatives (functional solidarity); and 3) there is an interaction effect of norms of filial responsibility and immigrant status on levels and hours of assistance provided to elderly relatives. The results showed that there was no relationship between norms of filial responsibility and the provision of assistance to elderly relatives; nor was there a relationship between immigrant status and the provision of assistance to elderly relatives. Coresidence with the elderly relative, as an alternative measure of norms of filial responsibility in Asian families, was investigated with regard to the provision of assistance to the elderly relative in the post hoc analysis. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between coresidence and higher levels and more hours of assistance provided to elderly relatives.
