Abstract:
Introduction - Maximising efficient and effective use of resources without compromising quality of care is essential in the current healthcare climate. Intensive care unit services are one of the most resource intensive and therefore expensive services within a hospital. Because intensive care unit services comprise a significant portion of hospital costs and resources, appropriate utilisation of intensive care units is imperative. The occurrence of delayed discharges and the reason for the delays is important as they impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of intensive care unit services.

Many nurses lack evidence-based knowledge to deliver appropriate oral care, view oral care in the care-dependent patient as a comfort measure, and give it a low clinical priority. Background: Patients treated in an intensive care unit (ICU) are seriously ill, have a high co‐morbidity, morbidity and mortality. ICUs are resource – demanding as they consume significant hospital resources for a minority of patients. The development of new medical procedures for critical care patients has over the years led to survival of larger numbers with more complex illnesses and extensive injuries. Improved survival rates lead to needs for outcome measures other than survival. The present study examines health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) and factors assumed to be important for the

Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) is used in healthcare organizations to improve workflow processes and transcription, as well as to prevent prescribing errors. Previous research has indicated challenges associated with CPOE for end-users that predispose patients to unsafe practices. Unsafe CPOE practices can be detrimental within the intensive care unit (ICU) setting due to the complexity of nursing care. Consequently, end-user satisfaction and understanding of CPOE and electronic health record (EHR) functionality are vital to avoid error omissions. CPOE initiatives should be refined

The management of ETT cuff pressure entails that nurses working in ICUs have the responsibility of ensuring that ETT cuff pressure is kept within normal range of 20-30 cmH20 for the safety of the patients in order to avoid complication of over and under inflation.

The development of adult intensive care in England and Wales has been researched using primary and secondary literary sources and the oral history of participants in intensive care in England and Wales from soon after its inception until the present (2011). The development of theory has been inductive. In 1952 Bjørn Ibsen, a Danish anaesthetist, treated patients with bulbo-spinal poliomyelitis (polio) with a regime based on intubation of the trachea (windpipe) and intermittent positive-pressure ventilation (IPPV) of the lungs. This resulted in a reduction of mortality of about fifty percent in

O banho do paciente em estado crítico constitui uma atividade que exige ordenamento das diversas etapas, dadas as características e peculiaridades. O aparato tecnológico peculiar das unidades de alta complexidade permite a monitoração, mas dificulta o acesso e mobilização do paciente. As repercussões oxi-hemodinâmicas do banho no paciente adulto internado em estado crítico no contexto relativo à etiologia/dano foram investigadas por meio dessa revisão sistemática de literatura, que objetivou identificar a existência de evidências científicas sobre as referidas repercussões naquela população e;
