Nutrition is a crucial component of critically ill patients' treatment. The key questions to address are when to initiate nutrition therapy, how to determine the optimal route, the appropriate amounts of macro and micronutrients, and the precise energy requirements for each patient. Critical illness has three phases: early period (previously "ebb phase") lasting 1-2 days; late period (previously "flow" phase) lasting for 3-7 days; late phase (Phase Rehabilitation or Chronic Phase). Each of the above-mentioned phases has its characteristics. During the first phase, severe catabolism is increase

Abstract In June 2024, GSA convened an expert roundtable to address the role of multivitamin/mineral supplements (MVMs) as part of complete nutrition for older adults. Older adults often do not obtain adequate amounts of micronutrients from their regular dietary patterns and are at risk for nutritional deficiencies. Reasons cited by experts included physiologic changes; comorbid conditions; conditions associated with aging (e.g., sarcopenia, frailty); socioeconomic factors; declines in physical function; and interrelated changes in cognition, functional capacity, mental health, and mobility. Abstract:
Nutrition during the developmental stages has long-term effects on adult physiology, disease and lifespan, and is termed nutritional programming. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of nutritional programming are not yet well understood. In this study, we showed that developmental diets could regulate the lifespan of adult Drosophila in a way that interacts with various adult diets during development and adulthood. Importantly, we demonstrated that a developmental low-yeast diet (0.2SY) extended both the health span and lifespan of male flies under nutrient-replete conditions in adult

Abstract COVID-19 has imposed challenges for older adults to access food, particularly in minority, lower income, and rural communities. However, the impact of COVID-19 on food access, diet quality, and nutrition of diverse older adult populations has not been systematically assessed. The objective of this study is to examine changes in food access, diet quality, and nutritional status among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential differential impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on these nutrition-related outcomes using the framework of the socio-ecological model. The objective of this study was to determine changes in the health indices of undernourished (BMI<18.5 kg/m2 ), anemic, adult women (18-50 years) after receiving a nutrition intervention for 120 days. For this purpose a highly nutritious, cost effective, easy to prepare, ready-to-cook food product i.e. Nutrient Dense Ingredient Mix (NDIM) was formulated. The developed mix was found to be energy dense as 100g of cooked NDIM provided 437.4 Kcal of energy, 13.58g protein and 3.62mg of iron. The experimental group was supplemented with NDIM daily for 120 days along with effective nutrition educa

Nutritional conditions during early development influence the plastic expression of adult phenotypes. Among several body modules of animals, the development of sexually selected exaggerated traits exhibits striking nutrition sensitivity, resulting in positive allometry and hypervariability distinct from other traits. Using de novo RNA sequencing and comprehensive RNA interference (RNAi) for epigenetic modifying factors, we found that histone deacetylases (HDACs) and polycomb group (PcG) proteins preferentially influence the size of mandibles (exaggerated male weapon) and demonstrate nutrition-

Purpose A preliminary review of several adult inpatients receiving parenteral nutrition (PN) revealed opportunities for improvement. In response, a drug usage evaluation (DUE) was conducted to: 1) determine specific areas of adult PN management needing improvement; 2) evaluate the current PN order forms; 3) identify reasons for PN wastage; 4) establish pharmacist involvement in prescribing/monitoring of PN in a community hospital without a formal nutrition support team. Methods A prospective DUE was performed on various adults receiving PN from January through February 2005. The following data

Foetal development has dictated by maternal gestational diet and intrinsic factors, physical activity, and environmental stimulations. Many studies provided evidence for metabolic disorders in adult life who underwent under nutrition during their foetal life. This review is an effort to use the published data to know the effect of the intrauterine environment on chronic metabolic disorders. Here, we discuss the impact of foetal under nutrition on the development of chronic metabolic diseases. Intrauterine under nutrition negatively influences health after birth. Background: Adult patients suffering from Crohn’s disease (CD) are often dissatisfied with the information they receive from their physicians about nutrition and its impact on CD inflammation activity. Only a few publications are available about patients’ internet research on nutrition in CD. The study aim is to elucidate the internet information sources of adult CD patients regarding nutritional advice via a questionnaire. Methods: A questionnaire with 28 (general and specific) questions for outpatients at our tertiary center with CD was created and used for an analysis of their information s

Epidemiological, clinical, and experimental observations have led to the hypothesis that the risk of developing chronic diseases in adulthood is influenced not only by genetic and adult lifestyle factors, but also by environmental factors during early life. Low birth weight, a marker of intrauterine stress, has been linked to predisposition to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. The compelling animal evidence and significant human data to support this conclusion are reviewed. Specifically, the review discusses the role of maternal nutrition before and during pregnancy, placental insuffi
