With the development of advanced driving assistance systems, in-vehicle communication and information systems, there are situations where the driver becomes overloaded by information, creating potentially dangerous conditions. In this Thesis a novel strategy is proposed, to prioritise and present information. Firstly two main criteria are extracted, that allow the ability to rank messages: the risk associated with the non-presentation of the message, and its relevance to the environment. Fuzzy cognitive maps enable to represent expert knowledge and model these relationships. Secondly, a strate

Advanced driver assistance systems or ADAS are designed to assist the driver while at the wheel of a motor vehicle. Although ADAS may reduce accidents by 20%, if the warnings presented by these systems are poorly-designed, they may even disturb driving and, as a result, slow drivers’ responses w

Abstract:
Beside all the technical challenges concerning sensor quality and control algorithms one of the main issues related to the introduction of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) constitutes the human-machine interaction. This covers not only the physical interface between the driver and the system but also the understanding and cognitive model the driver needs to operate the system. The explorative analysis of a long-term field study of the use of ACC, was aimed at identifying characteristics of the learning process and their potential implications for conceptualising novel displays to incr

Abstract:
Intersection crashes represent one-fifth of all police reported traffic crashes and one-sixth of all fatal crashes in the United States each year. Active safety systems have the potential to reduce crashes and injuries across all crash modes by partially or fully controlling the vehicle in the event that a crash is imminent. The objective of this thesis was to evaluate crash and injury reduction in a future United States fleet equipped with intersection advanced driver assistance systems (I-ADAS). In order to evaluate this, injury risk modeling was performed. The dataset used to evaluate injur
