Expected efficiencies of regular hierarchical, factorial, and diallel crossing designs were compared for selection of individual offspring within progeny plantings. Variations of the diallels and factorials included partial designs, use of disconnected subsets, and in factorials, unbalanced numbers between classes of parent. Calculations were done for a single trait, adapting the within- and between-family selection index of Osborne, with fixed numbers of parents (100) and total offspring (10 000). The combination of a low-pressure mercury lamp and chlorine (UV/chlorine) was applied as an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP), to examine paracetamol (PRC) degradation under different operational conditions. The results indicated that the UV/chlorine process exhibited a much faster PRC removal than the UV/H2O2 process or chlorination alone because of the great contribution of highly reactive species (•OH, •Cl, and ClO•). The PRC degradation rate constant (kobs) was accurately determined by pseudo-first-order kinetics. The kobs values were strongly affected by the operational conditions

The interactive effects of the influencing factors (dye concentration = 500–2,000 mg/L; time = 10–30 min; pH = 7.0–11.0) on degradation efficiency was critically examined through experimental design optimization by central composite design under the response surface methodology. The high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.976 & adjusted R2 = 0.958) obtained by analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated close fit between the experimental and the predicted values. A novel concept of multiple deterministic analyses is proposed to design safer and more damage-tolerant structures, particularly when excited by dynamic including seismic loading in time domain. Since the presence of numerous sources of uncertainty cannot be avoided or overlooked, the underlying risk is estimated to compare design alternatives. To generate the implicit performance functions explicitly, the basic response surface method is significantly improved. Then, several surrogate models are proposed. The advanced factorial design and Kriging method are used as the major building blocks.
