Abstract:
The monograph for the first time comprehensively explores two main areas of modern economics - the mainstream and neoricardianism, which are in the state of the so-called "dispute between the two Cambridges". The theoretical advantages and disadvantages of the directions, as well as specific proposals for their synthesis are shown. The author’s interpretations of many issues of economic theory are presented, aimed at increasing its consistency, logical tenacity and predictability of further development. Addressed to scientists, graduate students and teachers who specialize in the field of economics.

Abstract:
This chapter opens with a discussion of how paediatric electromyography (EMG) is materially different from that performed in adults. In this chapter, the recognition that EMG is considered a painful experience is acknowledged. The techniques to reduce this discomfort and the associated anxiety are described, including preparation of the children, both prior to the test and during the clinic appointment itself. The order of testing is another important factor along with the need for every intervention having a clear reason for its use. In other parts of the world, sedation is considered an essential accompaniment and the advantages and disadvantages of such an approach are itemized

Abstract:
Some people have meaningless lives because they have not identified what would make their lives more meaningful and, hence, have not engaged in it. The chapter discusses strategies and questions that can help people identify what is meaningful for them. Among other issues, it weighs the advantages and disadvantages of “deathbed questions” (e.g., if you were now on your deathbed and looked back, would you be glad that you had spent this day as you did?). It also emphasizes that people cannot increase meaning in life in just any way they please; decisions about increasing meaning in life should be realistic and take into account inclinations, abilities, and external circumstances.

Abstract:
Psychological testing probably touches more people more often than any other application of psychology. On-line testing has made tests more available and more accessible. This article considers the impact the development of the Web has had on employment testing. Its main focus is on the impact the use of remote forms of assessment has had on practice and on the development of new ways of managing the risks associated with assessment “at a distance,” especially in high-stakes situations. The use of the internet for assessment raises many other issues, such as the impact of remote assessment on applicant reactions, implications for the design of robust systems, the use of complex test forms, and on-line simulations, to name but a few.

Glatz, Phil, and Michael Bourke. Beak Trimming Handbook for Egg Producers. CSIRO Publishing, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643093539.

Full text
Abstract:
The Beak Trimming Handbook for Egg Producers is a straightforward, practical guide to beak trimming of egg-laying hens to minimise cannibalism. It provides comprehensive information on why birds peck and how pecking can lead to problems like cannibalism; the methods available to beak trim birds; why a particular method should be chosen; and at what age birds may be trimmed. The book addresses quality control of beak trimming, enabling egg producers to be confident that equipment is properly set up, that birds are handled and trimmed according to best practice and farm biosecurity is maintained. Management of birds following beak trimming, to protect of the welfare of the birds and to ensure maximum productivity, is covered in detail. Best-practice, current methods of beak trimming, costs of trimming and ways to reduce the use of trimming are examined, along with expected future developments. The advantages and disadvantages of beak trimming are fully explored, covering both public and industry attitudes to the operation. Alternatives to beak trimming are canvassed to understand how the use of fitted devices, enrichment devices, abrasives, low lighting and the choice of low-pecking strains of birds can reduce the need for beak trimming. Finally, the book discusses strategies for minimising cannibalism and how the chosen strategy may be documented and justified. Please note that this book is spiral-bound.

Hurtado, Aída. Intersectional Understandings of Inequality. Edited by Phillip L. Hammack. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199938735.013.12.

Abstract:
To address the increase in social and economic inequalities requires complex paradigms that take into account multiple sources of oppression. This chapter proposes the concept of intersectionality elaborated through social identity theory and borderlands theory as a potential avenue for research and policy to speak to and solve multiple sources of disadvantage. The multiple sources of inequality produce intersectional identities as embodied in the social identities constituted by the master statuses of sexuality, gender, class, race, ethnicity, and physical ableness. By applying intersectionality to inequality one can examine both intersections of disadvantage (e.g., being poor and of Color) or intersections of both of disadvantage and privilege (e.g., being male and of Color). Intersectionality also permits the study of privilege when advantaged social identities are problematized. I conclude with reviewing the possible ways of empirically studying intersectionality and the advantages in applying it to the understanding of social and economic inequalities.

Hendrickx, Jan F. A., André van Zundert, and Andre De Wolf. Inhaled anaesthetics. Edited by Michel M. R. F. Struys. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642045.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
Inhaled anaesthetic drugs are administered via the lungs to provide ‘general anaesthesia’. They are considered complete anaesthetics because they in and by themselves can in most patients ensure all clinical end-points that are required for ‘general anaesthesia’ (unconsciousness, immobility, and haemodynamic stability). The dose–response curve of each clinical end-point is conveniently defined by its mid-point, the end-expired concentration Fa that ensures response suppression in 50 % of the patients (MACawake, MAC, and MACBAR). By understanding the dose–response curves and the factors that influence them (pharmacodynamics), the target Fa and the dose of other drugs can be selected in each individual patient. This target Fa is achieved by adjusting the carrier fresh gas flow (O2, air, N2O) and agent vaporizer setting Fd. ‘Pharmacokinetics’ is the study of the factors that affect the partial pressure cascade from the vaporizer down to the site of action. Because IADs are transported down a partial pressure gradient, Fa will always try to approach the inspired concentration Fi, a process that is described by the Fa/Fi ratio over time. Both Fa and Fi are routinely measured. N2O remains widely used, with scientific scrutiny rather than belief finally delineating its advantages and disadvantages. Xenon, the near-ideal agent, is discussed briefly because it may enter clinical practice despite its cost because of its potential advantages in a yet to be defined subgroup of high-risk patients. The carrier gas N2 is often overlooked, but deserves careful analysis to help the reader understand how rebreathing affects its kinetics in a circle breathing system.

Horing, Norman J. Morgenstern. Q. M. Pictures; Heisenberg Equation; Linear Response; Superoperators and Non-Markovian Equations. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198791942.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Three fundamental and equivalent mathematical frameworks (“pictures”) in which quantum theory can be lodged are exhibited and their relations and relative advantages/disadvantages are discussed: (1) The Schrödinger picture considers the dynamical development of the overall system state vector as a function of time relative to a fixed complete set of time-independent basis eigenstates; (2) The Heisenberg picture (convenient for the use of Green’s functions) embeds the dynamical development of the system in a time-dependent counter-rotation of the complete set of basis eigenstates relative to the fixed, time-independent overall system state, so that the relation of the latter fixed system state to the counter-rotating basis eigenstates is identically the same in the Heisenberg picture as it is in the Schrödinger picture; (3) the Interaction Picture addresses the situation in which a Hamiltonian, H=H0+H1, involves a part H0 whose equations are relatively easy to solve and a more complicated part, H1, treated perturbatively. The Heisenberg equation of motion for operators is discussed, and is applied to annihilation and creation operators. The S-matrix, density matrix and von Neumann equation, along with superoperators and non-Markovian kinetic equations are also addressed (e.g. the intracollisional field effect).
