Abstract:

Havig, Jenna S. "Advantages and Disadvantages of Flexible Seating." Thesis, Minot State University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10619168.

Full text
Abstract:

Recently in education, a new trend called flexible seating has emerged. Classrooms with flexible seating are redesigned to have a “Starbucks” atmosphere where students choose from a variety of alternative seating options and workspaces rather than sit at traditional desks. This study looks at the advantages and disadvantages of having flexible seating in an elementary classroom and determines what implications there are for teachers considering this type of arrangement. It also provides insight into how those involved in the classroom are experiencing flexible seating. Using teacher interviews, classroom observations, and student surveys, this mixed methods case study describes two 5th grade teachers and their classrooms’ flexible seating experiences. Based on the results of the study, the researcher advises teachers to let the nature of the task determine the classroom seating arrangement. In addition, she suggests providing alternative seating devices for students regardless of the arrangement chosen as they allow for more movement throughout the day. And lastly, the researcher encourages teachers to consider their own teaching style and preferences when choosing an arrangement because they will be most effective when the classroom is arranged in a way that is pleasing and comfortable to them as well.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the method of one-click purchasing. One-click purchasing is a method allowing the customers to transact a purchase with only one click. The customer has entered the payment information necessary to complete the purchase at a previous occasion. Within the next buying opportunity, the customer can purchase products with one single click. The analysis and conclusions is based on both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources represent the result of a questionnaire performed with 200 respondents. The survey showed that the most common advantages with the method was fast, smooth, easy and time efficient. The disadvantages on the other hand were more varying and included cons such as uncertain, unreliable, risk-taking, page hacking, fraud and identity hijacking. The conclusion is therefore that the disadvantages are in grater number and also more shifting, which means that the perception of the one-click purchasing method tends to be more negative.

Yuan, Hong. "ETBE as an additive in gasoline: advantages and disadvantages." Thesis, Linköping University, The Tema Institute, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-6686.

Full text
Abstract:

The most widely used gasoline additive methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) has been questioned recently, since frequent detection of this compound in groundwater indicates that it could be a risk to our environment. Consequently, legislative efforts have been made by some local governments to phase out the use of MTBE. Among a number of alternative substitutes, ethyl tert-butyl (ETBE) seems to be the more promised one due to its lower water solubility, suggesting that it could pose less impact to our water supply. However, a thorough understanding of its environmental fate is needed before ETBE is widely accepted as a more environmentally friendly gasoline additive. As a part of this effort, the degradation of MTBE and ETBE as well as their effects on the fate of aromatic gasoline components, i.e. BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene and xylenes) were studied on two soils contaminated with MTBE-blended or ETBE-blended gasoline. During a period of 5 months, the general aerobic degradation of the gasoline and its different additives were monitored by gas chromatography – thermal conductivity detection (GC-TCD) and concentration changes of MTBE and ETBE were monitored with the help of gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results of this study showed that the degradation of MTBE, ETBE and BTEX occurred in all the systems, nevertheless MTBE and ETBE degraded far more slowly in contrast with the degradation of BTEX, indicating that MTBE and ETBE are more persistent. When the degradation of MTBE and ETBE were compared, ETBE decreased a little faster than MTBE, implying that ETBE advantages slightly in degradation over MTBE. Concerning the effects of MTBE and ETBE on the fate of BTEX, the results showed that MTBE might enhance whereas ETBE might inhibit the degradation of BTEX though at a lower level. In addition, less degradation of MTBE and ETBE was observed in organic-rich soil in all the cases, probably because that there are more other substrates available for the microorganisms in organic-rich soil.

Zeilenga, Jeffrey Robert. "Privatization of auxiliary services at public universities: Advantages and disadvantages." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186721.

Full text
Abstract:
The study looked at the trends toward the privatization or contract management of auxiliary services such as college bookstores at four year public universities to determine the degree that self-operated or leased bookstores support the campus based on the level of service quality being provided to students, financial support to the institution, academic support to the campus and other factors. The use of the SERVQUAL (1991) instrument was effective in evaluating levels of consumer satisfaction in the bookstore industry. Student satisfaction with newly leased bookstores was significantly higher than with institutional bookstores. The change from one delivery method to another appeared to be the cause of the higher levels of satisfaction and not the lease operator. Staffing levels are lower with lease bookstores. There was no data, however, to support a decrease in service as a result of the staff reduction. Auxiliary service directors strongly believe that their institutional operations could be as competitive as the leased bookstore. Yet, leasing is occurring at a dramatic rate which suggests that there is a need to set clear goals and objectives and communicate the role of auxiliary services. Prices and product selection increased as a result of the bookstore being leased. This study shows that the retail prices in the bookstore increased significantly when the campus store leased its operation. Review of the data suggests that higher retail prices correlate to higher percentages of gross revenue given to the institution by the lease operator. Leased bookstores financially contribute more to the institution than self-operated bookstores. This study, however, found no evidence to support the belief that leasing is more beneficial than self-operation because the philosophy of senior level administration does not expect the institutional bookstore to generate a profit but rather "just break even." Academic involvement is low among all college bookstores. There was a loss of management control and less monitoring as a result of leasing. Complaints of unfair competition were reported to have occurred 15 percent more frequently at the institutional bookstore than the lease bookstore.

Gaydos, Dana Joy. "Modeling the Advantages and Disadvantages of the Coral-Algal Symbiosis." Scholar Commons, 2006. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3905.

Full text
Abstract:
Coral reefs thrive in nutrient-deficient environments yet function among the most productive ecosystems on Earth as a consequence of the symbiosis between coral hosts and their symbiotic zooxanthellae. The symbiotic unit (holobiont) can utilize both inorganic and organic sources of nutrients for the accumulation of carbon and nitrogen required for metabolism, growth, and reproduction. An iterative model was created to describe the flux of carbon and nitrogen between a host and its algae. The model design is based on a previously published conceptual model of algal symbioses; functions and values of input parameters are based on published studies of the coral species Stylophora pistillata. The model is designed to simulate responses of the coral, zooxanthellae and the holobiont to different environmental variables, either one at a time or changing simultaneously. Simulations presented are for default values based on previously published data for S. pistillata adapted to high-light (shallow-euphotic) and low-light (deep-euphotic) environments, and for single-variable manipulations of rates of a) host feeding, b) photosynthesis, and c) dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) uptake. Simulations examining feeding rates between 0% and 6.5% of host biomass indicate that biomass of both high-light and low-light adapted holobionts increase exponentially with increased feeding, with benefit to the high-light holobiont ~8 times greater than to the low-light holobiont. Increasing rates of photosynthesis illustrated that a low-light holobiont is carbon limited, is primarily dependent upon host feeding, and can benefit from a small increase in photosynthesis rate. Simulations examining rates of DIN input indicate that the high-light holobiont functions optimally when inorganic nitrogen input is very low. Increase in DIN up to 0.5% resulted in benefit to the holobiont, but more resulted in unrealistically excessive growth by the zooxanthellae until a function to maintain a fixed range for the host-zooxanthellae biomass ration function was included in the model. Simulations for the low-light holobiont did not indicate any benefit from DIN input. The model was originally designed using a spreadsheet-based program which frequently became overloaded when testing multiple variables. Modification of the model in software better designed for modeling is recommended for future work.

Abstract:
A3-rapporten finnes i vedlegg 4.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the debate on microfinance commercialization, using the case of Chile. Another purpose of this thesis consists in mapping the field of microfinance in Chile. The hypothesis that is examined in this study is whether the commercialization of microfinance in Chile has brought opportunities and trade-offs with respect to poverty alleviation in the country. The methodology used in order to gain understanding of several aspects of commercialization of the microfinance sector in Chile is descriptive statistics accompanied by a qualitative analysis of the demand side of microfinance. To this end, interviews were conducted with several microfinance institutions and specialists. The results of the study indicate that the commercialization of microfinance in Chile has indeed brought opportunities and trade-offs with respect to poverty alleviation in Chile. Two opportunities that this study defines, are the increase in the scale of outreach and the increase of geographical outreach. Secondly, in contrast to these opportunities, a tendency for the commercialized microfinance institutions to pay less attention to the poorest segment of the Chilean population, is defined as a trade-off of the commercialization of microfinance.

Tedeschi, Beatrice. "Note-taking in consecutive interpretation; advantages and disadvantages of various techniques." Bachelor's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2015. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/8131/.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to investigate which contexts should be used for different kinds of note-taking and to study the evolution of the various types of note-taking. Moreover, the final aim of this thesis is to understand which method is used most commonly during the interpreting process, with a special focus on consecutive and community interpreting in the sector of public service and healthcare. The belief that stands behind this thesis is that the most complete method is Rozan’s, which is also the most theorized and used by interpreters. Through the analysis of the different rules of this practice, the importance of this method is shown. Moreover, the analysis demonstrates how these techniques can assist the interpreters in their jobs. This thesis starts from an overview of what note-taking means in the different settings of interpreting and a short history of note-taking is presented. The section that follows analyzes three different well-known types of note-taking methods outside the interpreting environment, that is: linear, non-linear and shorthand. Subsequent to the comparison, Rozan’s 7 principles are analyzed. To authenticate this thesis and the hypotheses herein, data was collected through a survey that was conducted on a sample of a group of graduated students in Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation at the University of Bologna “Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori”.

This study employed quantitative and qualitative methods and was conducted in two phases: (1) survey of 30 professors in summer 2003, and (2) case study of five professors in fall 2003. The main research question was "what do college professors perceive to be the pedagogical advantages and disadvantages of mobile computing in courses that require its use by students?" The study showed that the most important pedagogical advantages of mobile computing were (1) "improving professor-student communication," (2) "encouraging collaboration in common experience where students learn in groups that would improve their teamwork skills," and (3) "improvement in their capabilities as faculty in designing assignments that meet student needs." The pedagogical disadvantage was "too many e-mails to read." This study also found that many professors were working on the computer off and on campus. Some of them even worked beyond evening to early morning hours, and also during the weekend.

Portugal is going through an unprecedented unemployment crisis. Highly trained personnel are emigrating in search for better work conditions in their studies area since they cannot find well-remunerated jobs for the functions they studied for so many years. Job seekers that stay in Portugal try to find work in many ways. Some settle for a job beneath their potential, others search through the web using social (/professional) networks. Sites like Facebook and LinkedIn are digital tools, being many times used as virtual Markets, full of opportunities for the unemployed and also with large information databases that help recruiters in the search for candidates. This study will make a comparison between recruiters and candidates perspectives on job-hunting through social networks: specifically how Facebook and LinkedIn might give job seekers opportunities and how recruiters expose these opportunities. Obtained results showed that Facebook is wider spread trough candidates preferences, while recruiters tend to use more LinkedIn. In terms of what is posted they are tuned, both agreeing that curricular information is the key for a successful profile. Recruiters feel that there is too much information online, which makes talent hunting harder. Candidates consider that misleading information online is a very negative feature of social media. Both of them see lack of privacy as a big disadvantage and networking as the best advantage.

Abstract:

Researchers have connected student achievement to teacher collaboration; however, there is a paucity of studies conducted on how teachers use identified advantages and disadvantages of cross grade level collaboration to improve collegial interactions to achieve better student performance, professional development, teacher effectiveness, and job satisfaction. The purpose of this case study was to investigate how rural southeast Georgia elementary school teachers use identified advantages and disadvantages of cross grade level collaboration to improve collegial interactions. The theory of collegial coaching provided the conceptual framework for this study. The research questions focused on improving teacher effectiveness and student learning via collaborative dialogue. Data were collected via interviews, observations, and archival records from 14 teachers and administrators (maximum variation used) and analyzed for overarching emergent and dominant themes, patterns, issues, topics, ideas, relationships, cases, cross-cases, and concepts. Hatch’s typological analysis was employed to decipher the data. Ethnograph v6.0 and QDA Miner 4.0 were used to code the data for triangulation. Quality control and validation were achieved through triangulation and member-checking. The findings illustrated the merits of ongoing collaboration and effective collegial interaction for teaching and learning. They also highlighted the potential of meaningful discussion in achieving effective collegial interaction. This study can lead to positive social change by providing teachers, administrators, and collaboration facilitators 2 models that can be used as guides for planning quality collegial interaction opportunities and in justifying time to collaborate across grades.

Brobeck, Stefan, and Erik Kalozcy. "Advantages and disadvantages regarding usage of wireless systems in a warehouse setting." Thesis, Jönköping University, Jönköping International Business School, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-95.

Full text
Abstract:

Mobile computing and wireless systems are becoming more common as wireless technology evolves. Many authors argue that wireless systems can provide advantages and value to organisations, such as increased efficiency and effectiveness. Literature also shows that wireless systems especially suits companies within the logistics industry. However, some authors also highlight disadvantages regarding these solutions, for example insufficient security.

The purpose of this thesis is to present advantages and disadvantages for organisations regarding usage of wireless systems in a warehouse setting, and the factors that have an influence over these advantages and disadvantages.

This purpose is fulfilled with the aid of a qualitative study at Maersk Logistics in Torsvik, Jönköping where a number of respondents were interviewed. The study began with a literature study covering different aspects of wireless systems. The literature study was used to construct an interview guide, and also as a foundation for the analysis.

The empirical study shows that the wireless system at Maersk Logistics provides value to the organisation at both the operational and management level. The effectiveness and efficiency in the daily work increases and the system generates accurate information that forms a good foundation for the decision-making process. The study also shows that precautions need to be taken when using a wireless system, since the organisation becomes very dependent on the system.

Hatch's typological analysis was employed to decipher the data.

Abstract:

The purpose with this research was to find out what advantages and/ or disadvantages there might be as playing the role as a lecture. In everyday life we give eachother different roles. During the last years the lecture has become a current and outstanding role. This has made me more curious about the lectures´ thoughts about there role. In this work I have tried to explore about the lecture playing the role. I have questioned if the lecture really is playing a role and if so what the effects of that would be. To analyse my material I have used roletheory. The method I have used is depth interviews. My inteviewgroup contains of 6 persons, 3 men and 3 women. They all have got different educations. The result of my research shows that the lectures are playing roles and there are more advantages than disadvantages. The advantages by playing a role could be for instance to strengthen the message. It is easier to create dramatic and excitement and getting the audience listen to you when you are playing a role as a lecture.

The disadvantages by playing a role tend to be that the lecture might loose his or her credibility. Playing a role as a lecture could also mislead the lecture and make him or her powerless.

Rabkina, Irina. "Examining the Intersection of the Cognitive Advantages and Disadvantages of the Bilingual Brain." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/376.

Full text
Abstract:
Two conflicting findings characterize cognitive processing accompanying bilingualism. The “bilingual advantage” refers to improved cognitive performance for bilingual compared to monolingual participants. Most bilingual advantages fall under the umbrella of cognitive control mechanisms, most frequently demonstrated using the Stroop task and the Simon task (e.g., Bialystok, 2008; Coderre, Van Heuven, & Conklin, 2013). The “bilingual disadvantage,” on the other hand, refers to bilinguals’ diminished performance on tasks that require word retrieval or switching between languages. This study examined the intersection of the bilingual advantage and the bilingual disadvantage to investigate whether they stem from a single cognitive control process. The bilingual advantage was measured as speech onset time differences between monolingual and bilingual participants in the Stroop task after being primed in the same language (i.e., English prime and English Stroop for monolinguals, and either English prime and English Stroop or Spanish prime and Spanish Stroop for bilinguals). The bilingual disadvantage was measured as differences in bilingual participants’ speech onset times between the same-language conditions described above and cross-language conditions (i.e., either English prime and Spanish Stroop or Spanish prime and English Stroop). Monolinguals performed better than bilinguals did on the same-language Stroop [F(3,1) = 83.5, p < 0.001, MSE = 15415], so a bilingual advantage was not demonstrated. However, bilinguals did perform better in same-language blocks than cross-language blocks [F(7,3) = 24.6, p < 0.001, MSE = 22648]. This suggests that the current protocol successfully elicits the bilingual disadvantage. Further research is needed to evaluate whether the same cognitive control processes are responsible for the two effects. Possible extensions of this work include observing a larger number of participants to rule out between-subjects effects and using a button press rather than spoken response during the Stroop task.

Abstract:
The advent of cloud computing has enabled the possibility of moving complex calculations and device operations to the “cloud” in an effective way. With cloud computing being applied to mobile devices some of the primary constraints of mobile computing, such as battery life and hardware with less computational power, could be resolved by moving complex operations and computations to the cloud. This thesis aims to identify advantages and disadvantages associated with running cloud based applications on mobile devices. We also present a study of the power consumption of five cloud based mobile applications and compare the results to their non-cloud counterparts. The results from the experiment show that migrating all your applications to the cloud will not significantly reduce the power consumption of your mobile device at the moment, but that mobile cloud computing has matured within the last year and will continue doing so with the development of cloud computing.

Fitzpatrick, William Mark. "Homeland security: what are the advantages and disadvantages of different local homeland security organizational structures?" Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/45851.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
After the attacks of September 11, 2001, and the creation of the federal Department of Homeland Security in 2002, many local agencies formed their own homeland security entity. Since that time, significant economic downturns have resulted in reductions in the amount of homeland security funding available to local jurisdictions. Another issue involves the lack of a common definition of homeland security and what it entails and how daily operations are conducted to forward the mission. A jurisdiction wishing to continue to support a homeland security entity needs to make sound decisions as it pertains to these issues in an effort to provide the greatest service to its communities. This thesis analyzed three homeland security organizational structures located within the Metro Atlanta, GA, area to find their advantages and disadvantages using a case study method. The analysis for these structures was based on the mission of each structure, as evaluated based on the 2014 Quadrennial Homeland Security Report, or the mission of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or both if applicable, their operational functions as they pertain to the mission, and an inspection of each jurisdiction’s financial records relating to the overall department budget, homeland security budget, and grant monies. Advantages were noted for all structures along with recommendations that included the addition of mission-specific experts, the improvement of information sharing, jurisdictional relationships, cyber protection, and the proper development of a mission statement.

Abstract:
Social Enterprises face funding challenges. As investors focus too narrowly on risk and return, social enterprises may struggle to compete with commercial enterprises for investment capital. In this context, lending and equity crowdfunding have not been sufficiently examined, and its growing importance for business financing makes it valuable to understand its implications for social enterprises. This study collects qualitative data and uses thematic analysis to identify advantages and disadvantages that social entrepreneurs experience when using lending or equity crowdfunding. By conducting six semi-structured interviews we identified nine major advantages which are Viable funding option, Publicity and marketing, Engagement creation, Access to impact-minded investors, Alignment with company principles, Higher valuation of the company, Tests market viability, Favourable power balance towards investors and Large pool of capital; and five major disadvantages which includes Higher costs, Large number of investors, Inexperienced investors, Public exposure & Efficiency concerns. We discuss that crowdfunding represents values that are attractive for social enterprises. Further, crowdfunding sometimes offer higher valuation or more capital to social enterprises, compared to other funding sources. We see that several advantages are especially important in business’s startup phase. However, crowdfunding can also cause greater stress on the management team, and require time and resources. Entrepreneurs also need to consider factors such as public embarrassment when campaigns fail.

Abstract:
Scholarly reviews expound that current prevailing on-premise Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems could not be sufficient for enterprises to form highly dynamic units around vibrant requirements of the market. In response to satisfying ever-changing demands of the market, cloud computing has been recently emerged which its basic promise is convergence of IT efficiency and business agility in information technology. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is the most common type of cloud service which has been heralded to be a serious alternative for on-premise software. Considering shortages of current on-premise ERPs and high potentiality of SaaS to be as an alternative for on-premise software, this study seeks to empirically understand real advantages and disadvantages of adopting ERP systems served as SaaS from the perspective of SaaS users. "Real advantages and disadvantages" in this study are the ones which are not only certified through literature but also through empirical data. Grounded in literature review and personal communication with two Information Systems (IS) professionals, 19 items were considered as advantages and 12 items as disadvantages of ERP as SaaS adoption categorized in three groups of strategic, financial, and technical. Survey data of 90 responses were collected and analyzed out of 212 contacts with industry experts in different types of business and sizes of the enterprise in Sweden through nonprobability sampling. By application of Non-parametric test, our data analysis revealed that users of ERP as SaaS believed in five real advantages in adoption of ERP as SaaS while they did not agree with any real disadvantages in such adoption. They accepted that adoption of ERP as SaaS a) helps users to run their business more globally, b) enhances users’ business to go mobile, c) reduces large up-front investment of users on resource provision, d) saves technology costs, and e) helps users not to be concerned about management and maintenance of the ERP as SaaS. Moreover, our final results showed that majority of every enterprise size do not have plan of adopting ERP as SaaS in the future. Based on the findings, detailed discussion will be given about social consequences of the results and underlying reasons which could have impact on recognition of few real advantages and no real disadvantages in this study.

Abstract:

Understanding technical documentation is of vital importance, since instructions and descriptions are given about how technical products are used, maintained and repaired. Because of the increased economic globalization, more and more documentation is both written in English by non-native English writers, and delivered to non-native English readers. More and more documentation is also translated by means of computerized aids. In order to improve comprehension and translatability of technical documentation, controlled languages are created. Controlled languages are subsets of ordinary languages, but with restricted vocabularies and writing rules.

The aim of this report is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages for Swedish export companies to use Simplified Technical English (STE), which is a controlled language, for their technical documentation. In this work technical writers are asked about their opinions of STE. Additionally, technical texts written in traditional English are compared with versions written in STE, in order to find out whether texts written in a controlled language are easier to read or not. Within the comparison, the differences between the versions are discussed and a readability measurement is done. The measurement showed that readability in technical documentation is improved by using STE. The writers’ opinions are illuminated in three areas, which are: higher documentation quality, reduced translation costs and reduced production costs.

The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is the Navy’s principal institution for providing advanced education to the Navy and Marine Corps. Funded in part by direct funding through annual appropriations, NPS also receives a substantial amount of reimbursable funding through sponsored research, education, professional development, and other sponsored activities. In recent years, the amount of reimbursable funding NPS receives on an annual basis has grown considerably while direct funding has remained relatively constant. Consequently, the Naval Inspector General conducted inspections of NPS in 2009 and 2012 to address this as well as other issues. As a result, there has been ongoing discussion regarding NPS’s mission and the role reimbursable funded work should play at the school. Like other Navy organizations, NPS is also working toward achieving auditable financial statements in compliance with the Department of Defense Comptroller’s Financial Improvement and Audit Readiness Plan by 30 September 2017. The purpose of this MBA professional report is to evaluate the feasibility and appropriateness of converting NPS from a direct and reimbursable funded organization to a Navy Working Capital Fund activity to uphold the school’s mission and support the Navy in achieving financial auditability.

Hefer, Chris. "A critical analysis of the effects of abolishing death taxes in South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/41572.

Full text
Abstract:
Death taxes are payable by individuals upon their death. It is therefore ironic that the living has devoted so much of their time and energy to arguing about the future of this tax. One can only presume that a person will not find any peace in the after-world if they felt that they were treated unfairly by the tax authorities upon their death. The arguments surrounding death taxes have been carrying on since the first country abolished the tax in 1978. Very few countries that have implemented the tax have not had in-depth research and discussion surrounding the tax and South Africa is no exception. Until now there have been no measures put in place to abolish the tax in South Africa, however the Minister of Finance has indicated that the future of the tax is currently being reviewed by the tax authority. Both the proponents and opponents believe that their views are correct regarding the future of the tax. Although their views might differ about the matter, both sides do agree that a decision about the tax needs to be made so that the government and academia can focus on other important matters. Both sides make use of case studies and research performed in other countries to support their views. However, South Africa has a very unique political, economic and social environment and therefore the findings and views applicable in other countries cannot simply be applied locally. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages noted by international experts and academia against the unique South African climate. This is done to enable the researcher to determine what the possible political, economic and sociological effect might be on the country should death taxes either be abolished or kept for the foreseeable future. The conclusion is that due to the global recession and the abundance of poverty and unemployment in South Africa, the benefits of keeping death taxes outweigh the drawbacks thereof. Until such a time that the climate in the country has changed dramatically, death taxes should form part of the country’s tax regime.

Abstract:
This paper investigates advantages and disadvantages of working agile in an innovation process. Both agile and innovation are two words that can be seen as buzzwords. However, they are two words that in one way or another can make a company successful. The research question was tackled from three different angles; academic theory, expert interviews within the topic, and interviews with employees of a market research and marketing consultancy company that helps their clients with different kinds of innovation processes. The market research and marketing consultancy company in question was also where the practical part of the paper took place. The paper deals with theories from various academic articles that all center around agile, innovation or both. However, additional insights from books, blogs and websites are used. The method used includes semi-structured online interviews. The paper concludes with several advantages and disadvantages of agile working in an innovation project and also puts forward three recommendations: “Continue to recommend the agile way of working in innovation projects”, “Make sure the clients involve and prioritize their customers in their innovation process” and “The digital B2C service companies’ management should provide and prioritize its designated team a clear guideline”. The recommendations are meant for the company where the practical part took place. However, the recommendations are written and analysed to be valuable for digital B2C Service companies in general as well. This is since recommendations are based on academic theories and expert interviews, which both deal with the research question from a general point of view

Abstract:
This evaluation of research investigates the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of utilizing cooperative learning into the ESL (English as a second language) classroom for pupils at an elementary education level. Teachers need to be contemporary with their pedagogy and lesson design and implement methods that can enable that the national criteria regarding knowledge requirements in the syllabus for English are met. The methods within cooperative learning corresponds with sociocultural theories of Vygotsky as it is based on the zone of proximal development where high achievers can develop accordingly to their own qualifications, as well as low achievers. In the current study, we examine a selection of empirical studies on cooperative learning. The results of this analysis reveal that Cooperative learning is an advantageous way of reaching every individual to make sure that their English language acquisition is nurtured, but that the aspects of group grading make it difficult when grading each individual pupil. The findings also revealed that the implementation of cooperative learning into the ESL classroom had advantageous outcomes when it comes to vocabulary learning, writing skills, speaking skills and a lot of the pupils gained a better confidence and had a high achievement level in comparison to more traditional teacher focused pedagogy. Pupils also showed that their motivation and attitudes changed over time, when exposed of the cooperative learning methods in the ESL classroom. It is advised that teachers utilize cooperative learning in the ESL classroom hence it is beneficial for both pupils and teachers. Keywords: Cooperative learning, English as a second language, English as a foreign language, elementary school, group grading, ESL classroom and EFL classroom.

And what DHL can learn from analyzing competitive disadvantage? Method: primary data for this research has been mainly collected through interviews. Moreover, the official reports are used as secondary data to present the empirical situation of DHL. Conclusion: By concerning the external and internal factors of DHL, the SWOT analysis is conducted. The strength of DHL is customer satisfaction, green programme etc; weakness is price, liability insurance etc; opportunities are cooperation development, innovation etc; and threats are tough competitors. The strength and opportunities are regarded as DHL’ competitive advantages, while the weakness and threats are DHL’s competitive disadvantage that need to be fixed. Further study & Implication: In this thesis there is no information to indicate if DHL has any unmet needs, but it must be there. If DHL can enhance itself by providing unmet needs to customer, there is no doubt DHL would be more competitive in the 3PL industry. It is interesting to investigate more work on DHL unmet needs. This study contributes to the companies which plan to develop their competition from inside to outside in the market, especially in 3PL industry. This thesis gives authors deep insights into company success factors and suggestions for dealing with the problems which company may encounter.

Abstract:
Context: Adopting agile practices has proven to be successful for many practitioners both academically and practically in development scenario. But the context of agile practices adoption during software maintenance is partially studied and is mostly focused on benefits. The success factors of agile practices during development cannot be related to maintenance, as maintenance differs in many aspects from development. The context of this research is to study the adoption of different agile practices during software maintenance. Objectives: In this study, an attempt has been made to accomplish the following objectives: Firstly, to identify different agile practices that are adopted in practice during software maintenance. Secondly, identifying advantages and disadvantages of adopting those agile practices during software maintenance. Methods: To accomplish the objectives a case study is conducted at Capgemini, Mumbai, India. Data is collected by conducting two rounds of interviews among five different projects which have adopted agile practices during software maintenance. Close-ended questionnaire and open-ended questionnaires have been used respectively for first and second round interviews. The motivation for selecting different questionnaire is because each round aimed to accomplish different research objectives. Apart from interviews, direct observation of agile practices in each project is done to achieve data triangulation. Finally, a validation survey is conducted among second round interview participants and other practitioners from outside the case study to validate the data collected during second round interviews. Results: A simple literature review identified 30 agile practices adopted during software maintenance. On analyzing first round of interviews 22 practices are identified to be mostly adopted and used during software maintenance. The result of adopting those agile practices are categorized as advantages and disadvantages. In total 12 advantages and 8 disadvantages are identified and validated through second round interviews and validation survey respectively. Finally, a cause-effect relationship is drawn among the identified agile practices and consequences. Conclusions: Adopting agile practices has both positive and negative result. Adopting agile practices during perfective and adaptive type of maintenance has more advantages, but adopting agile practices during corrective type of maintenance may not have that many advantages as compared to other type of maintenance. Hence, one has to consider the type of maintenance work before adopting agile practices during software maintenance.
