Abstract:
Reducing the number of failures in the implementation of innovations is the goal of most enterprises engaged in innovative activities. This should allow them to get higher performance and move to the level of innovative leaders. This can be facilitated by a well-organized and introduced at the enterprise model of commercialization of innovations, which would contain a minimum number of «bottlenecks». Accordingly, the purpose of the article is to establish the main advantages and gaps of existing models of innovation commercialization. In the course of the study five models of commercialization were examined. The essence and specificity of each of these models are described. A critical analysis of the models was also carried out. Grouping of advantages has demonstrated that the directions of strengthening commercialization models are as follows: 1) preliminary valuation of innovation ideas from different points of view, for example, the technical possibility of developing an innovation, its market and marketing values and commercial feasibility of its implementation; 2) presentation of the idea of innovation as a valued proposition with a consumer component; 3) taking into account the influence of external groups of factors on the process of commercialization, in particular economic, ecological and social; 4) prediction of various options for commercialization and further spread of innovations. It is determined that the common gaps of most models are: 1) insufficient attention to the opinions of consumers; 2) separateness from the participants of the commercialization process; 3) lack of intellectual property protection. In addition, the following «bottlenecks» are identified: the model is focused on the rapid introduction of innovation, otherwise it may lose relevance; a large number of stages, which can complicate and delay the process of commercialization; high dependence between participants, which can delay decision-making. Further research will be aimed at developing a new model for the commercialization of innovation. Certain advantages of models can be used in the construction of a model in order to strengthen the result. The identified gaps will reduce the number of weaknesses in the model.

Abstract:
Enzymatic biodiesel production has attracted tremendous interest due to its well-recognized advantages. However, high enzyme costs limit the application of enzymatic processes in industrial production. In the past decade, great improvements have been achieved in the lab and the industrial scale, and the production cost of the enzymatic process has been reduced significantly, which has led to it being economically competitive compared to the chemical process. This paper summarizes the progress achieved in enzymatic biodiesel research and commercialization, including reducing enzyme cost, expanding low-quality raw materials, and novel reactor designs. The advantages and disadvantages of different enzymatic processes are also compared.

Abstract:
Through the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of commercialization in the NBA league, the conclusion drawn in this article is that the increase in the degree of commercialization ion of the league has a significant impact on the league's visibility, commercial value, economic income, and overall competitive level. It can also drive the development of the entire sports industry and the formation of a country's sports culture. In the process of commercialization, corresponding problems also arise. From the perspective of fairness, certain matches in the league may be affected by commercial interests in the terms of the fairness of referee calls and penalties. Sometimes, concessions may be made for the sake of the viewing and smoothness of the game, which can damage the interests of one team and violate the spirit of fairness and justice in sports. In addition, gray industries such as gambling and soccer are constantly emerging, which have a great impact and harm on society and are difficult to completely avoid. After decades of development, the NBA has successfully captured the development dividends of the media and Internet era, completed its own brand building, and pushed the NBA to the world. The NBA continuously improves its internal rules, introduces a series of policies, works closely with sponsors in various fields, and make it the world's number one professional basketball league. In order for China's professional basketball league to develop and grow on the path of professionalization and commercialization, in addition to learning and drawing on the NBA business model, it is also necessary to combine its own basic national conditions and basketball development status, formulate basketball league and culture with Chinese characteristics.

Abstract:
Using an in-depth case study, this paper examines how the governance of a public university responds to the dual challenges of academic research and commercialization. Our findings indicate that the stakeholder model of institutional governance for academic research strongly underpinned by new public management ideologies conflicted with the research commercialization mission dominated by a profit seeking objective. To be governed responsibly, commercialization requires some degree of corporatization, and the corporate governance model seems to offer many advantages to public universities. The study demonstrated that the best way forward for public universities may be to adopt „dual‟ stakeholder and corporate governance models and utilize complementary and collaborative governance strategies to meet the challenges of academic research development and commercialization.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the role of intellectual property in the modern post-industrial economy and its intensive commercialization of the country's competitive advantages in the global economic environment. The main purpose of the research is to prove the hypothesis about the crucial role of intellectual property development in ensuring expanded public reproduction and facilitating the global competitiveness of national economies through innovative modernization of production. To gain the research aim, the authors used a combination of theoretical synthesis and comprehensive statistical analysis. The study follows a deductive approach and theoretical background analysis followed by quantitative research of statistical data. It allowed arriving essential conclusions concerning the role of intellectual property in strengthening the global competitiveness of the national economy and practical policy implications regarding stimulating intellectual property commercialization within the national economy. Paper investigates transmission mechanisms that represent the impact of intensive commercialization of intellectual property on public reproduction and competitiveness of the national economy. Commercialization of intellectual property, defined as a range of activities envisaged for rapid implementation of intellectual activity, resulted in economic turnover to obtain strategic competitive advantages and generate economic profit supported by the transformation of intellectual property into intellectual capital used for the manufacturing of innovative, highly marginal products. Comprehensive statistical data analysis was conducted using quantitative methods (cluster analysis and principal components analysis). The findings proved the key role of intellectual property in the modern system of public reproduction. They demonstrated the multiplicative impact of intellectual property development on a country's competitive global economic environment. Obtained research results provided the basis for policy implications concerning the development of commercialization of intellectual property and stimulation of expanded reproduction of intellectual capital in Ukraine as a precondition of innovative modernization of national industries and acquiring strategic competitive advantages in a globalized market.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the perceived importance by two-tiered management of Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) for managing a range of intellectual property issues. Fifty survey items are presented to the executive directors and commercialization managers of 62 CRCs. The survey items are categorized under four themes: relationships with collaborators, project management; design and implementation of agreements; and specific licensing issues. An analysis of the data, using a series of independent samples t-tests, repeated measures t-tests, chi-square tests for independence or relatedness and goodness of fit, shows a range of results. There are significant differences between executive directors and commercialization managers on a number of issues. There are particular emphases or trends about certain issues for the whole sample of managers. These findings are compared with text analyses of 23 CRC strategic planning documents. This is done in order to explore any similarity, difference or nuance between what the managers say in response to the survey items, compared with what is stated in the codified policies of the CRCs. While there is a high degree of consistency among certain themes between the two sets of findings, the overall analysis points to the need for the CRCs to have a better understanding and practice of commercialization opportunities, especially through the involvement of third party commercial interests. It is argued that accommodating third party commercialization interests involves the application of an important knowledge economy principle that has an important bearing on the future economic viability and competitiveness of the CRCs.

Its sustainability and competitiveness depends on being able to grow alongside its competitors while looking attentively to emerging markets. China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world with the corresponding growth in wine consumption. Although China is one of the largest international trading countries with Portugal, and one of its biggest investors, the wine sector has been lagging, especially when compared with France or other wine producers. Considering its strategic importance it is mandatory that reasons be found to explain such fact with a focus on the Chinese opportunities in order to offer insights.

Abstract:
This chapter brings together arguments from economics, sociology, and political economy to show that innovation processes are characterized by a dilemma between the advantages of aligned expectations—including greater coordination and investment—and those of diversity, including superior openness to new technological possibilities. To illustrate the argument, the chapter discusses a historical case involving one of the largest coordinated peace-time attempts to hasten technological innovation in the history of capitalism, namely the US energy technology policies of the 1970s and 1980s. Close examination of the commercialization of photovoltaics and synthetic fuel initiatives illustrates both sides of the dilemma between shared versus diverse expectations in innovation: coordination but possible premature lock-in on the one hand, and openness but possible stagnation on the other. The chapter shows that even the exploration and interpretation of new technologies may be as much a product of focused investment as of trial-and-error search.

Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Economics and Human Biology provides an extensive and insightful overview of how economic conditions affect human well-being and how human health influences economic outcomes. The book addresses both macro and micro factors, as well as their interaction, providing new understanding of complex relationships and developments in economic history and economic dynamics. Among the topics explored is how variation in height, whether over time, among different socioeconomic groups, or in different locations, is an important indicator of changes in economic growth and economic development, levels of economic inequality, and economic opportunities for individuals. The book covers a broad geographic range: Africa, Latin and North America, Asia, and Europe. Its temporal scope ranges from the late Iron Age to the present. Taking advantage of recent improvements in data collection and economic methods, the book also explores how humans’ biological conditions influence and are influenced by their economic circumstances, including poverty. Among the issues addressed are how height, body mass index (BMI), and obesity can affect and are affected by productivity, wages, and wealth. How family environment affects health and well-being is examined, as is the importance of both pre-birth and early-childhood conditions for subsequent economic outcomes. The volume shows that well-being is a salient aspect of economics, and the new toolkit of evidence from biological living standards enhances understanding of how industrialization, commercialization, income distribution, the organization of health care, social status, and the redistributive state affect such human attributes as physical stature, weight, and the obesity epidemic in historical and contemporary populations.

Abstract:
AbstractOxy-fuel combustion is regarded as one of the most promising carbon capture and storage technologies to mitigate the climate change, which has been widely studied and demonstrated in academia and industry. In the oxy-fuel process, a mixture of recycled flue gas and pure O2 obtained from an air separation unit is introduced into the combustion chamber to replace air as oxidant gas. Therefore, high concentration of CO2 can be obtained in flue gas, which is suitable for the subsequent carbon storage and utilization. It also has other advantages, such as low NOx emission, easy scale-up, and applicability in existing power plant. However, the intensive energy consumption associated with the ASU is the bottleneck limiting its further commercialization. The OCAC process has a proven advantage of burning fuel at lower oxygen-fuel ratio compared to conventional FBCs. Therefore, the combination of oxy-fuel combustion and the OCAC technology, i.e. oxygen-carrier-aided oxy-fuel combustion (oxy-fuel-OCAC), can be expected to improve the utilization of O2, leading to less energy consumption from the ASU.

Abstract:
Abstract Food systems transformation is the new idea for food security policy for sub-Sahara Africa, in which inclusion, demand-driven innovation and participation are mentioned as key words. However, inclusion of (indigenous) knowledge and farmer innovation are absent in most food security strategies. Instead, technology transfer and commercialization are promoted as key to food production and poverty reduction. In this Chapter, based on field work in rural West Africa, we explore the case of two food systems in Mali, one (i) based on transfer of technology to increase crop production; the other (ii) based on indigenous knowledge and local practices. It shows how two approaches can co-exist and be combined and merged with existing practices, without dismissing or substituting what is already in place. The study also reveals the advantages of human-centered, context-aware approaches, in which the complex interplay between local practices and contextual factors are considered, and local food sovereignty is achieved.

Abstract:
Perovskite has emerged as a promising light-harvesting material for solar cells due to its higher absorption coefficient, bandgap tunability, low-exciton binding energy, and long carrier diffusion length. These lead to high power conversion efficiency >25% for thin film-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Additionally, PSCs can be fabricated through simple and cost-effective solution processable techniques, which make this technology more advantageous over the current photovoltaic technologies. Several solution-processable methods have been developed for fabrication of PSCs. In this chapter, the advantages and disadvantages of various solution processable techniques and their scope for large-scale commercialization will be discussed.

Abstract:
In recent times, plant-based (biopolymers), cost-effective, and wide-source porous carbon has gathered great attention for application in low-carbon supercapacitors. Despite its widely known benefits like environmental benignity, biodegradability, high specific surface area and unique pore structure, the specific capacitance and energy density values are limited, causing a hindrance for its large-scale commercialization. Therefore, the idea of compounding porous carbon with other carbon-derived nanostructures, metal oxides, and layered double hydroxides, is of significant interest to improve the overall electrochemical performance of low-carbon supercapacitors. In this chapter, various biopolymers and derived porous carbon are introduced in detail and the applications and research progress of porous carbon-based electrode materials in electrochemical energy storage in recent years are reviewed. The effect of incorporating graphene, metal oxides, and layered double hydroxides in porous carbon (porous carbon/graphene, porous carbon/metal oxide and porous carbon/layered double hydroxide composites) on the supercapacitive performance are briefly discussed. Finally, this chapter summarizes the current research status of low-carbon supercapacitors based on nanocomposites, and the advantages and challenges to promote their application in the field of electrochemical energy storage.

Before commercialization of a medical device, it is important to evaluate its usability. Traditional methods such as user testing to evaluate usability of medical device encountered difficulties to put participants in simulation conditions that are sufficiently realistic to be representative of real life. Virtual reality can be used to immerse participants in a high-fidelity simulation at a lower cost, but is not widely used today. This feasibility study aims to compare the results obtained between user tests in a real simulated environment and in a virtual reality environment, with feedback on the advantages and disadvantages of both conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract Over the last decade, commercialization of Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (also referred to as Long Range UT) has provided industry with a powerful new technique for ascertaining the integrity of piping systems. The major advantage of the technique is it’s capability to screen inaccessible piping over long distances from a single exposed location. The information developed allows the user to identify the locations in a pipe that have suffered potentially injurious corrosion and gain an understanding of the significance of the damage. Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT) provides this and other advantages when compared to more conventional non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques. As with all NDT techniques, though, GWUT has limitations that must be kept in mind by the user to properly understand and utilize the results. This paper will discuss these advantages and limitations to assist the user in utilizing this important inspection technology.

Abstract:
Abstract Extensive work has been carried out by lab scientists and production engineers that recognized the multi-compositional scale deposition challenges in one high-temperature gas field. Removing such scales has been a challenging and complex process. In addition to the high temperatures and high H2S, other factors, such as downhole completion, near wellbore pressure, formation permeability, and high deposit amounts, must also be considered in developing and selecting the descaling strategies. Coiled tubing (CT) mechanical descaling was developed and deployed in the past by taking advantage of state-of-the-art technologies such as high RPM milling, downhole sensors, foamed cleanup tools, and sophisticated surface collecting and well testing equipment. However, CT descaling operations have become limited in recent years due to reduced downhole pressures in some wells as the field matures. This paper describes the results of the field implementation of the newly patented scale dissolver technology for dealing with mixed scales. Lab studies demonstrated that this chemical product has the potential to be used for both tubing/liner/completion and formation stimulation benefits as well. Field results showed significantly increased gas productivity in conjunction with improved well operational factors as well as retrieved well accessibility. A discussion on the different lab evaluation protocols is also presented, and a final update on current scale clean-up strategies and future proposals is included. The results presented in this work represent recent advancements in iron sulfide scale management. The new scale dissolver technology is under commercialization and can be applied to various systems, such as oil and gas producers, water injectors, and surface handling facilities.

Abstract:
Nanotechnology can be applied to various industries and textile industry is one of the foremost industries benefited. Starting 1997, textile industry pioneers with foresight already using the nanometer particles to coat on yarns, fibre and fabric to give innovation to the industry. There was estimation that in 2007, the market for the nanometer particles application, electronic textiles and wearable electronics had reached US$13.6 billion and projected to hit US$115 billion in 2012 (1). Despite this great potential, the textile industries find themselves like swimming in the big ocean when applying nanotechnology to their products. Consumers are hesitated to accept the nano-treated garments as they have little knowledge when comes to nanotechnology. A poll was taken out in August, 2007 showed that in United States, many Americans know little to nothing about nanotechnology. Only 6% of Americans have “heard a lot” about nanotechnology and 42% have heard “nothing at all” (2, 3).

Abstract:
The pulsed jet device is a kind of device that can jet rapidly with micro flux. Present jet methods cannot fulfill the requirements of a large-flux, high-speed and stability in some applications. Combining with the character of pulsed jet device and the advantage of high-speed on-off valve, a new kind of micro-flux jet device —pulse jet on-off valve was designed. The basic structure and the working theory of the device were introduced first; then the valve was studied in detail on the basis of the requirements of jet speed and flux, including structure selection, rated pressure computation, dimension designing etc.. The advantages and disadvantages of actuators driven by electromagnetic, piezoelectric and giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) were compared, then GMM was chosen to drive the pulsed jet on-off valve. The flux and jet speed response experiments demonstrated that the pulsed jet on-off valve based on giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA) could fulfill the requirements of application.

The paper had discussed on a new technology and equipment in deepwater engineering, ASDD (Artificial Seabed Deepwater Drilling), and its process of commercialization in COSL of China. The concept of ASDD had put forwarded by a Norway engineer in 1993, and COSL had introduced it to China since 2004 from Europe, which has been built the cooperation with a company from Norway to develop ASDD not only the technology but also equipment. The advantages of ASDD is both reduce cost of drilling in deepwater and use common semi submersible to replace of expensive platform in deepwater drilling until water depth of 1500 m. A series of tests and simulations had been done both abroad and domestic by COSL and two large trial operations had been gone in South China Sea between 2008 and 2009. The trial well operation had been completed in Apr. of 2009, and COSL dispatched many huge vessels, including to Nanhai V, which is one of the hugest semi submersible in Aria, and AHVs that power is over 10,000 HP, such as Nanhai 212, Nanhai 213, Nanhai 216 and so on. The trial well had taken great success. It is obvious that COSL intend to carry out process of commercialization for ASDD, and the two commercial wells had been planed to drill in South China Sea in 2010.

Abstract:
Electrochemical micro-machining (EMM) appears to be very promising as a future micro-machining technique, since in many areas of applications, it offers many advantages, which include excellent machining precision and control, high machining rate, perfect surface quality and a wide range of materials that can be machined, regardless of their strength and toughness. At present, electrochemical micro-machining has been applied in the production of some metal workpieces, such as micro-holes, micro-slots and complex 3D surfaces. In this paper, A new electrochemical micro-machining set-up for machining metal micro-holes has been developed. Double level mechanical structure has been applied as the main structure style, which has the advantage of excellent structure rigidity, compact framework dimension as well as perfect maneuverability and maintainability. The control system based on PLC control method has also employed to realize different motion styles for rotating axis, such as uniform velocity rectilinear motion, varying velocity rectilinear motion and cycle rectilinear motion and so on. In order to verify the reliability of this EMM set-up, some test works including static measurement, assembling interferences checking and kinematics simulation have been done. The simulation results demonstrate that the developed EMM set-up for manufacturing metal micro-holes is qualified and can satisfy the technical requirements of electrochemical micro-machining process.

In this paper, we present a new model for an organic pixel addressing circuit based on four-transistor configuration. The proposed circuit doesn’t have the problems of regular configurations which are based on four-thin film transistors (TFT). Circuits based on four-TFT have many advantages, but the only problem is the existence of current peaks at the beginning of each pixel luminescence. Both 4-TFT based configuration and proposed one were simulated using HSPICE. Simulation results indicate the superiority of the proposed method compared with existing technique.

Electrochemical machining (ECM) is considered an advanced and promising technique due to several special advantages, such as non-contact machining without cutting force, no tool wear and heat-affected layer, etc. Base on the experimental results of micro-ECM, the influence of predominant process parameters, i.e. electrolyte concentration, pulse duration, period and voltage amplitude of power supply, on machining accuracy were investigated and discussed. Experimental showed that lower voltage amplitude and shorter pulse duration in micro-ECM process could produce more accurate micro structure shape. Using the self-developed experimental system, the micro tool-electrode and the complex micro-structures were sequentially machined. Upon the application of ultrashort voltage pulses, the letters with 20μm in line width were fabricated stably by the W tool electrode with 10μm diameter.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">There is an urgent need to decarbonize various industry sectors, including transportation; however, this is difficult to achieve when relying solely on today’s lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology. A lack of sufficient supply of critical materials—including lithium, nickel, and cobalt—is a major driving force behind research, development, and commercialization of new battery chemistries that can support this energy transition. Many emerging chemistries do not face the same supply, safety, and often durability challenges associated with Li-ion technology, yet these solutions are still very immature and require significant development effort to be commercialized.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph"><b>Emerging Automotive Battery Chemistries: Hedging Market</b> identifies and evaluates various chemistries suitable for deployment in the automotive industry and describes advantages, disadvantages, and development challenges for each identified technology. Additionally, it outlines development timelines, contending that, to benefit from these new technologies in a decade or so, commercialization needs to begin today (e.g., de-risking critical material supply chains, developing circular approaches). Splitter, Gary, and Menachem Banai. Attenuated Brucella melitensis Rough Rev1 Vaccine. United States Department of Agriculture, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2004.7585199.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The original objectives of the proposal were: 1. Compare mutants 444 and 710 to Rev1 (parent strain), and 16M (field strain) in murine and human macrophage lines for phenotypic differences. 2. Determine in vivo virulence and survival of the mutants 444 and 710 in guinea pigs and mice. 3. Determine humoral and cell-mediated immune responses induced by mutants 444 and 710 in guinea pigs and mice. 4. Determine in vivo protection of mice and guinea pigs provided by mutants 444 and 710 compared to Rev1. Background: While human and animal brucellosis are rare in the U.S., brucellosis caused by B. melitensis remains relatively constant in Israel. Despite a national campaign to control brucellosis in Israel, the misuse of Rev1 Elberg vaccine strain among pregnant animals has produced abortion storms raising concern of human infection due to vaccine excretion in the milk. Further, some commercial Rev1 vaccine lots can: a) produce persistent infection, b) infect humans, c) be horizontally transmitted, d) cause abortion, and e) induce a persistent anti-O-polysaccharide antibody response confounding the distinction between infected and vaccinated animals. In Israel, vaccination practices have not optimally protected the milk supply from Brucella and Rev 1 vaccine can exacerbate the problem. In addition, cattle vaccinated against B. abortus are not protected against B. melitensis supporting the need for an improved vaccine. A safe vaccine used in adult animals to produce herd resistance to infection and a vaccine that can be distinguished from virulent infection is needed. A rough Rev1 vaccine would be less virulent than the parental smooth strain and permit serologic distinction between vaccinated and infected animals. Advantages of the Rev1 vaccine foundation are: 1) Rev1 vaccination of sheep and goats against B. melintensisis approved; therefore, vaccines derived from the Rev1 foundation may be readily accepted by licensing agencies as well as commercial companies, and 2) considerable data exists on Rev1vaccination and Rev1 proteins. Therefore, a post-genomic vaccine against B. melitensis based on the Rev1 foundation would provide a great advantage. Major conclusions from our work are: 1) We have determined that mutant 710 is highly attenuated in macrophages compared to virulent field strain 16M and mutant 444. 2) We have confirmed that mutant 710 is highly attenuated in guinea pigs and mice. 3) We have determined immune responses induced by mutant 710 in animals. 4) We have determined in vivo protection of mice and guinea pigs provided by mutants 444 and 710 compared to Rev1, and importantly, mutant 710 provides a high level of protection against challenge with virulent B. melitensis 16M. Thus, our data support the goals of the grant and provide the foundation for a future vaccine useful against B. melitensis in Israel. Because of patent considerations, many of our findings with 444 and 710 have not yet been published. Scientific and Agricultural Implications: Our findings support the development of a vaccine against B. melitensis based on the mutant 710. Because strain 710 is a mutant of the Elberg Rev1 vaccine, commercialization is more likely than development of an entirely new, uncharacterized Brucella mutant or strain.

Norelli, John L., Moshe Flaishman, Herb Aldwinckle, and David Gidoni. Regulated expression of site-specific DNA recombination for precision genetic engineering of apple. United States Department of Agriculture, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2005.7587214.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives: The original objectives of this project were to: 1) evaluate inducible promoters for the expression of recombinase in apple (USDA-ARS); 2) develop alternative selectable markers for use in apple to facilitate the positive selection of gene excision by recombinase (Cornell University); 3) compare the activity of three different recombinase systems (Cre/lox, FLP/FRT, and R/RS)in apple using a rapid transient assay (ARO); and 4) evaluate the use of recombinase systems in apple using the best promoters, selectable markers and recombinase systems identified in 1, 2 and 3 above (Collaboratively). Objective 2 was revised from the development alternative selectable markers, to the development of a marker-free selection system for apple. This change in approach was taken due to the inefficiency of the alternative markers initially evaluated in apple, phosphomannose-isomerase and 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate phosphatase, and the regulatory advantages of a marker-free system. Objective 3 was revised to focus primarily on the FLP/FRT recombinase system, due to the initial success obtained with this recombinase system. Based upon cooperation between researchers (see Achievements below), research to evaluate the use of the FLP recombinase system under light-inducible expression in apple was then conducted at the ARO (Objective 4). Background: Genomic research and genetic engineering have tremendous potential to enhance crop performance, improve food quality and increase farm profits. However, implementing the knowledge of genomics through genetically engineered fruit crops has many hurdles to be overcome before it can become a reality in the orchard. Among the most important hurdles are consumer concerns regarding the safety of transgenics and the impact this may have on marketing. The goal of this project was to develop plant transformation technologies to mitigate these concerns. Major achievements: Our results indicate activity of the FLP\FRTsite-specific recombination system for the first time in apple, and additionally, we show light- inducible activation of the recombinase in trees. Initial selection of apple transformation events is conducted under dark conditions, and tissue cultures are then moved to light conditions to promote marker excision and plant development. As trees are perennial and - cross-fertilization is not practical, the light-induced FLP-mediated recombination approach shown here provides an alternative to previously reported chemically induced recombinase approaches. In addition, a method was developed to transform apple without the use of herbicide or antibiotic resistance marker genes (marker free). Both light and chemically inducible promoters were developed to allow controlled gene expression in fruit crops. Implications: The research supported by this grant has demonstrated the feasibility of "marker excision" and "marker free" transformation technologies in apple. The use of these safer technologies for the genetic enhancement of apple varieties and rootstocks for various traits will serve to mitigate many of the consumer and environmental concerns facing the commercialization of these improved varieties.
