Scherhag, Knut, Sven Gross, and Manuel Sand. "Adventures on two wheels – Comparative study of motorcycle adventure tourists in Germany, Austria and Switzerland." Zeitschrift für Tourismuswissenschaft 14, no. 3 (November 19, 2022): 303–32. http://dx.doi.org/10.1515/tw-2022-0017.

Abstract:
Abstract In Western industrialized countries, the use of the motorcycle has changed from a means of transportation to a recreational device. As a result, this form of travel has gained more focus by destinations and specialized travel companies. In this context, the focus on adventure and experience is also increasingly used in customer communication. But there are only few contributions in the scientific literature which deal with motorcycle tourism in principle, a deeper consideration of the adventure character of motorcycle tourism is missing, except for a few travel reports. Based on these considerations, the relationship between adventure tourism and motorcycle vacations is shown and discussed with the help of an empirical study among German, Austrian and Swiss motorcyclists. Motorcycle tourism is a special form of drive tourism, which is connected with motorized tourism as well as with adventure and nature tourism. However, the landscape acts mainly as a backdrop, as the main feature that makes motorcycle tourism special are scenic and winding roads with little traffic. As a result, it can be stated that motorcycle travel can include elements that classify it as a subcategory of adventure tourism. As with other forms of adventure tourism, a distinction can be made here between soft and hard adventures, with the soft variety predominating.

Abstract:
Adventure tourism has established itself as a concept and a field of research within tourism. While the German tourism market is one of the biggest in the world, no evidence exists on the German adventure traveller. In adventure tourism research in general, there is little evidence on how personality, motives, and socio-demographic factors distinguish the choice for soft and hard adventure activities. Therefore, this quota-based survey among 1,500 German travellers does investigate demographics, motives and personality aspects. A logistic regression analysis is performed to categorize tourists into soft and hard adventure travellers. Gender and age are descriptive characteristics, as well as extraversion and going on adventures to get to know oneself better. This research helps to better understand German hard adventure travellers and enables operators to cater specifically to the needs of the target group.

Abstract:
The purpose of scientific research is to explore the leading genres of satire and humor, which reproduce travel adventures and which were distributed in the Rivne press in the 1950–80s of the twentieth century. It is determined that the satirical reproduction of travel adventures in the pages of regional periodicals took place. The diversity of topics of travel adventures was revealed on the example of the content of the Rivne region press, the dynamics of the appearance of these texts on the pages of the Rivne newspapers «Chervonyi prapor» and «Zmina» was traced. The most important components of travel in the regional information space, in particular, performed by the traveler-narrator are outlined. It was found that a significant influence on the content of the travel adventure is exerted by the researcher-promoter, clearly expressing his own position.

Abstract:
Customer satisfaction has become the critical outcome variable in tourism where traveler experiences become electronic word of mouth (eWOM) for future visitors, yet the drivers of customer satisfaction in adventure travel are not well established in academic literature. This study relies on both qualitative and quantitative measures to examine visitor perceptions at a wild animal reserve to determine drivers of customer satisfaction in adventure travel. The theoretical framework extends Oliver's expectation disconfirmation theory to this new and growing sector that differs in that consumers are seeking out unexpected experiences in their travel adventures. This research addresses the role of expectations in a context where customers are seeking the unexpected. This work also incorporates Russell's circumplex theory of affect to illustrate the importance of achieving a positive, high activation state on the path to customer satisfaction. Findings indicate that perceptions of novelty, value, conservation focus, authentic cultural experience, and freedom of exploration are drivers of customer satisfaction, but perceptions of tranquility and the presence of animals are not. Results imply that the desire to seek animals or tranquil settings motivate the desire to book an adventure travel experience, but satisfaction with the experience itself will require the delivery of experiences that are undiscovered, unexpected, and go beyond consumers' preconceived notions. These novel experiences produce the high activation and positive disconfirmation that drive customer satisfaction in this unique travel context.

Abstract:
Adventure tourism as a form of sustainable tourism is a potential source of social, economic, and environmental development, and the more the tourism industry is exploited in a responsible manner, the greater the development of a country. The present research proposes the following objectives: (i) to identify the motivational dimensions of demand in an adventure destination, and (ii) to determine the motivational dimensions of demand that predict the return, recommendation, and saying positive things of the adventure destination as loyalty variables. The study was carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic in Guayaquil, and the participants had visited the province of Santa Elena in Ecuador, an adventure tourism destination. This quantitative study used a sample of 318 valid questionnaires that were collected online and analyzed using factor analysis and the multiple regression enter method. The results show five motivational dimensions in adventure tourism: learning, social, biosecurity, relaxation, and competence mastery. The relaxation dimension is the most important and most influential predictor in return, recommendation, and saying positive things about the demand for adventure tourism. The results will contribute as management guides for DMOs and as sources of information for companies involved in the marketing and development of post-pandemic products. The study is also a contribution to the academic literature on adventure destinations.

Abstract:
This paper is an extract from Beau Mile’s The Backyard Adventurer (2021) published by Brio Books. It is the text of the voiceover for the corresponding film ‘Walking 90 Kms to work’ available on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-Zyud8xh2c – Miles redefines adventure through his attempts to transform a mundane part of his life into an adventure. The first part of the text details missing travel and adventure when increasingly locked into a regular lifestyle, before deconstructing the necessity of travelling great distances or pushing oneself to extremes in order to experience adventure. In an attempt to demonstrate his argument, Miles decides to walk to work instead of driving. He documents his mindset and experiences when completing his daily 90km commute from a semi-rural lifestyle block to the inner city campus of the university where he works. The simple of idea of “walking to work” reveals how distanced we are from the spaces that surround our transport routes; how insulated we have become from the world around us. The text and film provides an intriguing performance of the philosophy that it articulates.

During 2014–2015, we produced a short video documentary, titled The Art of Wild, which focused on the audiovisual practices of outdoor adventurers. This short written report reflects on an idea inspired by the video: the GoPro gaze. Enacted by increasingly sophisticated, portable and affordable recording audiovisual technologies such as the GoPro Hero camera, the ‘GoPro gaze’ entails not just the pursuit of pleasures derived from adventure and nature-based travel, but also the production and distribution of professional-quality independent videos for Internet audiences. Based on a series of ‘go-along’ interviews with adventure travelers/athletes/artists, this article and the accompanying video prompt us to reflect on how the affective pleasures and technological affordances of the ‘GoPro gaze’ trouble the established idea of the ‘tourist gaze’.

The novel Afraja, written by the German author and liberal Theodor Mügge and published in 1854 provides an opportunity to explore connections between travel writing and adventure stories from the perspective of one of Germany's most popular writers of the nineteenth century. The focus of my discussion in this paper is to explore the implications of the meeting between a fictional Sámi, living in the exotic North and a Danish aristocratic adventurer whose attitudes reflect the discourse of Mügge's politically liberal views. Additionally, Mügges fiction sketches out different images of the Sámi.

Abstract:
In the Adventure Travel Development Index, Indonesia is ranked 101 out of 163 developing countries, even though it is ranked fifth in natural resources due to so many natural assets that can be developed as world-class adventure destinations. Hence, this study aims to understand the complexities of relationships between Environmental Sustainability, Social Equity & Cultural Vitality to Economic Prosperity, and Sustainable Adventure Tourism Development. This study examined 73 indicators adopted by Global Sustainable Tourism Council and Travelife to build Sustainable Adventure Tourism Model in the Indonesia context, surveyed three Adventure Tour Operators (ATOs) from 15 adventure tourism destinations, from Land Based Adventure (Nusa), Water Based Adventure (Tirta) and Air Base Adventure (Dirga), and conducted a cross-sectional quantitative study using partial least square structural equation modeling. Several findings show that although Economic Prosperity is not proven to mediate the positive influence of Governance and Environmental Sustainability on Sustainable Adventure Tourism Development, Economic Prosperity is proven to mediate the positive influence of Social Equity & Cultural Vitality on Sustainable Adventure Tourism Development. It is recommended to increase sustainable adventure tourism by creating jobs and increasing people's income.

Abstract:
Travel plays a critical role in twentieth-century Bengali adventure literature for adolescent males. Armchair journeys through the Empire and beyond let that audience discover the world: a panoply of high- to low-ranking cultures, utterly strange geographical spaces and, often, their ‘barbarous’, ‘uncivilized’ inhabitants. Exemplified by Hemendrakumar Roy’s works, the genre encourages boys to draw correlations between race, ethnicity and territory in a way that elevates Hindu elites within a civilizational hierarchy that borrows, but will not follow wholesale, the Western schema. The literary trope of travel imaginatively transports the colonized protagonists and audience across their country’s borders. Yet the destinations, distanced from their experience by perilous voyages, are clearly chosen to spark reflection on their own domestic spaces. The adventures, in turn, fuel their individual and, ideally, national self-transformation. For Roy’s travel narratives promote such changes by featuring Bengali heroes defeating horrific hazards with courage, strength, intelligence, self-sacrifice and perseverance—‘masculine’ qualities the author hopes a new generation will imbibe and use to serve the nation. Doing so, he also hopes, will disprove in reality what he demolished in writing: colonizers’ stereotype of Bengalis as effeminate cowards, and their dismissal of Indian culture as beneath their own.

Abstract:
There has been a significant growth in adventure tourism globally in recent years including Turkey. Fethiye is a good example of this trend as the resort has great potential for adventure tourism. Adventure tourism helps holiday destinations to attract sustainable tourism management in comparison with the traditional sea, sun and sand form of tourism. The specific aim of this study is to reveal the benefits of adventure tourism for the adventure traveller and for the providing organization too. Questionnaire technique was used to gather data. The questionnaire was directed and employed towards the service providers. Data was collated between May and October 2014 and 161 questionnaires were completed via face to face survey methodology. Adventure travel/ traveller benefits were ascertained from enquiries appertaining to: experience, activity, environment and other miscellaneous factors. Findings of the survey identified that the greatest benefits of adventure tourism for the providing organisations were 'self actualization' and 'supporting culture and environment' both of which, from statistical analysis, appeared to have a direct impact on increased business opportunity and growth market potential. As a result of this study, it is surmised that the provision of serving such destinations with adventure tourism should be of significant benefit to travellers and service providers alike. Keywords: Adventure tourism, benefits of adventure tourism, adventure-based leisure/recreation, service providers.

The specific aim of this study is to reveal the benefits of adventure tourism for the adventure traveler and for the providing organization too. Questionnaire technique was used to gather data. The questionnaire was directed and employed towards the service providers. Data was collated between May and October 2014 and 161 questionnaires were completed via face to face survey methodology. Adventure travel/ traveler benefits were ascertained from enquiries appertaining to: experience, activity, environment and other miscellaneous factors. Findings of the survey identified that the greatest benefits of adventure tourism for the providing organizations were 'self actualization' and 'supporting culture and environment' both of which, from statistical analysis, appeared to have a direct impact on increased business opportunity and growth market potential. As a result of this study, it is surmised that the provision of serving such destinations with adventure tourism should be of significant benefit to travelers and service providers alike. Keywords: adventure tourism, benefits of adventure tourism, adventure-based leisure/recreation, service providers.

Abstract:
European and American travel experiences in the Levant and Arabia serve, in the last analysis, as a treatise on the psychology of human quest rather than mere records of individual itineraries. During the Crusades, this quest was prompted by the desire for religious fulfillment augmented by the innate European craving for the mysterious and the exotic. The Renaissance evinced a consuming curiosity about Islam's holy cities in Arabia; a curiosity that had been fuelled by the Crusader wars against the Muslim enemy. European travel to Arabia, across the centuries up to the nineteenth, was a hazardous adventure into a mysterious and forbidden land; an adventure which whetted European craving for travel. By the nineteenth century, Levantine and Arabian travel had developed into a science in which experts - Egyptologists, and other archaeologists, Arabists, sociologists, and Biblical scholars practiced their respective fields of specialization. The early twentieth century saw the rise of a new type of travel writer; that of the archaeologist/political officer, whose activities, for the first time since the Middle Ages, were part and parcel of British imperial interests. Arabian travel, in the traditional sense, came to an end in the 1950's, with the completion of the exploration of the Empty Quarter. European and American travel experiences in the Levant and Arabia, as surveyed in this article, being a prototype of a treatise on quest psychology, serve, hopefully, to invite yet further research on the psychology of quest..

Abstract:
How long will it take to get from “Point A” to “Point B”? Estimating the answer to this question is essential for outdoor leaders to accurately and safely manage their outdoor adventure education course. By being able to carefully estimate the amount of time needed to travel a particular route, over the course of a day or an entire expedition, outdoor leaders will be able to avoid unnecessary risk and provide ample time for other curricula and experiences. This paper describes several land-based travel calculation methods (including the less known Munter system recently added to www.caltopo.com’smapping functionality), and notes why they are essential for leading successful outdoor expeditions. Along the way the paper articulates the pedagogical relevance of time calculation models to leadership curriculum and anticipates critiques related to the “McDonaldization” of outdoor adventure education.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore domestic experiential travel by Chinese millennials, a group of consumers who will increasingly influence the global travel and tourism industry. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative research method was adopted to explore motivations and memorable experiences of Chinese millennials who successfully mountain biked the Qinghai–Tibet Highway in China. Findings For Chinese millennial mountain bikers in Tibet, experiential travel motivations and experiences are important. During the trip, they challenged their mental and physical abilities, enjoyed nature, bonded with friends and perceived a warm welcome by Tibetan families. This study adds to existing knowledge on experiential travel, as it was found that transformation was perceived as important outcome of the trip. Participants perceived personal change in attitude and behaviour, which will help them face everyday life challenges. Research limitations/implications Further research could focus on gaining insight into other types of Chinese adventure tourists, on comparing wishes and demands of Chinese with other mountain bikers and on developments in transformative travel. Practical implications Adventure tourism organisations could adjust their tourism product range to cater more for Chinese millennials who aim to improve their physical and mental skills. Originality/value In-depth research into motivations and experiences of Chinese millennials is scarce. The influence of Chinese millennials on the tourism market is already large and will continue to increase.

Abstract:
This study explores Chinese Generation Y’s perceptions of adventure tourism experiences and their reasoning in deciding to participate. Focus group interviews reveal that Chinese youths have a unique generational sociocultural perception of participation in adventure activities. Much like their Western counterparts, members of China’s Generation Y want to experience the freedom of international travel that enables self-development and maturity, but they also have a strong sense of familial obligation and distinctive cultural beliefs that underpin their consumer decision making. Safety concerns of both the young people and their parents, along with self-efficacy beliefs regarding their physical ability to participate in the experience, can also reduce their likelihood of participation in adventure activities that they consider to be too risky or physically challenging. The study emphasizes that the design and marketing of adventure experiences must consider the unique Chinese generational psychology of this cohort and has implications for practice and future research.

Abstract:
In the 1950s and 1970s, bibliographers made attempts to define the genre of fiction and offer a systematization of the available fiction literature. The purpose of the article is to trace the development of the category of “fantastic” in the recommendation indexes of Z. P. Shalashova “Adventures. Journeys. Science Fiction”, “Artificial Earth satellites. Interplanetary flights”, “Adventures and travel”. The problems faced by bibliographers were related both to the sharp increase in publications of fantastic literature, and to the weak development of the theoretical apparatus in literary studies and bibliography. The concept of “fantastic” has evolved from an adventure-related type of scientific and educational literature to a metaphorical “dream world” devoid of terminological clarity. The material of bibliographic indexes, de- spite its limited functionality, nevertheless demonstrates that the processes that took place in the field of recommendation bibliography of children’s books reflect the significant difficulties that bibliographers experienced in finding a language for describing fiction.

Abstract:
Adventure tourism developed during the 1970s and 1980s and attracted a wealthy clientele. Trekking combined quickly with ascent of low difficult summits, and the first specialized travel agencies are created. After the Alps, where the logistics of travel is easy to organize, other destinations, extra-European, are issued in tourism. During the 1990s, this market is booming and many agencies were created. It is in this context that the great summits of the continents have become tourist destinations: Mt-Blanc, Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Everest, etc. The study is based on the participation in four treks in Kilimanjaro from 2005 to 2019. It is a question of analyzing the management, by the agencies, of the relations between Western clienteles and the local workers, within the framework of an intercultural situation. It highlights how, during this period, the management of the tip issue evolved from the adventure field to the written formulation / formalization.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to present the forgotten novel Wspomnienia wygnanki from 1844 by Paulina Krakowowa. The author draws attention to its readability and literary values, which made it a bestseller in the 19th century. The dissertation also offers an analysis and interpretation of Wspomnieniawygnanki in the context of nineteenth-century novels for girls, as well as in the context of adventure novels, the so-called “robinsonada”. This is because Krakowowa’s novel is saturated with sensational, adventure and travel themes. Therefore, it should be placed within and outside the circle of nineteenth-century novels for girls. Wspomnienia wygnanki is an innovative novel, going beyond the usual conventions of moral prose and novels of manners towards an adventure novel (“robinsonade”), which, in the nineteenth century, was reserved almost exclusively for boys.

Abstract:
This paper examines the trends and meanings of translation and publication of cultural books by the JoseonYasogyoseohoi(The Christian Literature Society of Korea) during the Japanese colonial period, and Ann Judson Sajeok(Ann Judson), Yurakhwangdogi(The Swiss Family Robinson) and GeurusoPhyorugi(Robinson Crusoe), which are adventure stories for missionary purposes. The goal is to identify the internal structure of and its influence on the development of travel literature. As a personal biography of a great man, Ann Judson and the drift novels Yurakhwangdogi and GeurusoPhyorugi, although their genres are different, have something in common in terms of travel experience, drifting, and cross-cultural contact. This means that these works contributed greatly to the development of Korean travel literature, but there are certain differences in the internal structure of the works depending on the differences in genre. Due to the nature of biographies of great people, Ann Judson has a relatively simple narrative structure in which the flow of time and movement through space are relatively simple. In comparison, other two drifted novels are works that appropriately embody the motif of ‘travel → drifting → settlement → return’, and are works that appropriately reproduce the chronotope as a space-time complex at the level of travel literature. In particular, the illustrations used in Geuruso are pictures that specifically express the time and space signified within the text, and become noteworthy elements in relation to the restructuring of space and time in travel literature. In this way, adventure stories for missionary purposes can be said to be important works in terms of the development of travel literature, even if Bible translations remain or cultural prejudices based on civilizational discourse are inherent.

AbstractLike many of his contemporaries, the popular novelist Jules Verne (1828–1905) was deeply influenced by the geographical explorations of the mid 19th century. Of more than 60 novels published from 1855 onward in his series Les voyages extraordinaires, which involved tales of adventure, travel, geographical discovery or scientific or technological innovation, 11 included scenes or themes of polar travel. Verne clearly relied for his material and inspiration on current or recently-published polar expedition narratives of the Victorian era.

As one of the greatest and fastest-growing industries of our time, one with significant impacts upon societies and economies almost everywhere, tourism (mass travel for pleasure and recreation) merits serious historical study. In the Middle East and North Africa, the turning point in travel for trade, exploration, adventure, and religious inspiration to travel primarily for leisure occurred in Egypt and Syria/Palestine during the 1880s. Tourism, however, is not only intrinsically important. Its origins and development also shed light upon the great themes of Middle East history: (1) modernization (the introduction of Western techniques, methods and materials), and (2) colonial expansion and empire.

Abstract:
As numerous surveys attest, place location learning among American school children is inadequate using traditional instructional methods centered on passive map study. This study examined the use of a computerized adventure game to simulate an environmental exploration for fourth and fifth graders. The computer game involved a “treasure hunt”-type search, under subject control, through a simulated environment of thirty “places.” Subjects ( N = 120) played individually for forty minutes, while using one of four variations of maps: thirty subjects were given a map with each location named and graphically represented; thirty were given a map with names only; thirty with pictures only and thirty had to play the game without the aid of a map. Subjects were tested for recall of place locations. The main variables examined were type of accompanying map and subject gender. Results showed statistically significant differences among the kinds of maps used. No significant gender differences were found. Subjects in all groups indicated they enjoyed the simulation game experience. Results from a two-week post treatment follow-up test showed high levels of retention for all groups.

In the nineteenth century, transmitting knowledge of the world became one of the most important tasks for education. As the last blank spots on the map were filled in, geographical knowledge assumed particular importance. In order to do business, assess political situations, and make travel plans, young adults had to learn more than etiquette, manners, religion and history. This knowledge of the world was conveyed to minors primarily via pedagogical instruction (for example, by way of geography textbooks), but also via adventure stories and travel novels.

“Math by the Month” activities are designed to engage students to think as mathematicians do. Students may work on the activities individually or in small groups, or the whole class may use them as problems of the week. No solutions are suggested, so students look to themselves for mathematical justification and develop confidence to validate their work. Most children have done some type of traveling. Whether it is a trip around their neighborhood, to another city, or to a different state or country, traveling is an adventure. This month, students will use the context of travel to engage in mathematics problems that promote logical thinking, graphing, measurement, number sense, and problem solving. The first travel books appeared as works based on the motives of travel and adventure. The motive of travel has gone through phased stages in Uzbek folklore and classical literature and appeared in the form of national-modern travelogues, embodying artistic, aesthetic, social, educational, educational and intellectual content. The travelogue genre is a relatively little-studied area of literary criticism. But this genre is widespread in the world, including European and American literature. Accordingly, scientific studies of this genre were developed in the literary criticism of those regions in connection with much more ancient times. The elucidation of the historical process of development, the principles of development and the poetic features of the works of travelers is intended to substantiate the role and significance of our national travelogues in revealing the new possibilities of this genre.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the concept of randomness as the absence of goal-oriented movement in literary walks. The literature of walking displays the happenstance of adventure as one of the great antidotes to our inane, highly technologized, digitalized twenty-first-century lifestyle. In the end, however, such randomness may reveal itself as not so random after all, as the purpose of the journey, its inherent telos, discloses itself while travelling or in hindsight. This article provides brief glimpses into the history of literary walks to examine this tension between apparent randomness and the non-random. By drawing on a range of cultural theories and theorizations of travel and especially of walking, I look at literary foot travel in the nineteenth century, the Romantics and American Transcendentalists, some great adventure hikes in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and the urban and rural flâneur. In doing so the article does not lose sight of the question of how we can instrumentalize the literature of walking for life during the current pandemic.
