Full textEthnology of the adventure. Contemporary practices of male mobility and identity buildings in West Africa (Burkina Faso) – This PhD thesis features an ethnology of migratory phenomena in West Africa which promotes a study of the mobility locally called “adventure” as an anthropology of the uncertainty. The initial purpose was to grasp labile and roaming identities of migrants who refer to themselves as adventurers – identity branched to specific practices, desires and conceptions of the Elsewhere. In approaching as closely as possible the meaning of the speeches of the actors and the witnesses, in analyzing thick biographies of adventurers in order to reproduce the subjective dimension of their migratory experience, and in observing in vivo the social contexts and the crucibles of meanings where the desires of extroversion arise, we give to see and understand the adventurers’ uses of the Here and the Elsewhere, as well as their relationships to themselves, to others and to the world they generate. Contrary to the cliché painting migrations in the most miserable way, thus we unveil a philosophy of the mobility that makes us inclined to think the adventurer as a subject-author of his existence and the adventurism as an éthos and a ritual form of self-aestheticization, self-narrative, self-conquest and self-exposure

Full textJean-Henri Maubert de Gouvest, born in Rouen in 1721, was an Enlightenment adventurer. With his tumultuous career, he is fully in line within the polymorphous and variegated family of fortune knights studied by Suzanne Roth and Alexandre Stroev. In fact, by breaking relationships with his family, Maubert entered the Capuchin order at the age of 17 but when he quit the religious habit, he left the convent. Becoming fugitive, he could not return to his family and his peregrinations carried him all over Europe, like Ange Goudar or Casanova. Throughout his travels, our knight of fortune played the role of tutor in Poland, journalist in the United Provinces or spy for France. Different occupations evoked in André Warzée, Jeroom Vercruysse, Pierre Coquelle or Edmond Dziembowski’s works on the press and the Seven Years' War. By developing relationships with some statesmen and many other adventurers over the course of his adventures, Maubert created a real network and thus shaped enough material to write, gradually becoming an “aventurier d’écritoire”. His low income placed him in the category of "Rousseau des ruisseaux", analyzed by Robert Darnton. Living precariously, Maubert succeeded in attracting the good graces of a patron : Cobenzl, a plenipotentiary minister in Brussels with whom he maintained a correspondence. Despite the help of his benefactor, Maubert was forced to produce a literature only to survive, offering his readers an original vision of the eighteenth century filtered through his own experience. Polygraphe, he was interested in education, politics, religion and rewrote some of Voltaire’s works. Nevertheless, his literary career ended fairly quickly. Forced to leave Brussels for Amsterdam where his creditors caught up with him, he was imprisoned for nearly eighteen months during his endless trial. Leaving prison in a deplorable state of health, Maubert died in 1767, in Altona, in troubling circumstances. His literary work, unknown today, is however rich, including about thirty titles and would benefit being rediscovered by the historians. Thus, by analyzing the specificity of Maubert's network, we are interested in establishing whether and in what way, the different members of this group are representative and vectors of Enlightenment ideas. More than a rehabilitation of the literary artwork or of the author, we focus in this work on the study of the relationships and writings of a man who was both a witness and an actor of the Enlightenment

Full textFor a long time, the myth of Casanova has reduced him to a brainless womanizer and has overshadowed his literary work. In order to furtherunveil his writings, this thesis studies one of the paradoxes that are regularly found in them. Steeped with enlightened philosophy, the chevalier de Seingalt shows his despise for superstitious beliefs. However, as he is confronted to irrationality during the Age of Enlightment, he becomes a charlatan and uses his theatrical skills to dupe other people, which makes him develop an « aesthetic of superstition ». Still, at some point of his life – in particular during the Leads episode – the imposter falls victim to his own irrational fears. Unable to decide on his convictions, his philosophical thoughts remain contradictory andaffect his writings. As he switches from the appeal of reason to the pleasures of belief, the adventurer indulges himself in wavering, not only in terms of women, but also in literature and philosophy

Full textGlover, Jeffrey T. "Adventure Movement Project| Building a sustainable adventure movement." Thesis, Prescott College, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1557871.
Full textThis thesis introduces the question of how to intentionally build a sustainable adventure movement, which is a grassroots effort to intentionally and significantly increase the use of outdoor adventure education as an innovative educational tool for schools, communities and businesses in perpetuity. Taking a whole-systems approach and applying leading social movement and diffusion theories, the Adventure Movement Project (AMP) seeks to develop a framework for integrating outdoor adventure education into whole communities to inspire servant leadership, achieve sustainability, and drive innovation. A socially just and sustainable planet can thrive with outdoor adventure education acting as a highly effective catalyst, which drives social, economic, educational, and environmental change. To that end, this thesis presents original applications of diffusion models and social movement theories to outdoor adventure education. The research used an original Delphi study—of outdoor adventure education experts—which explored how to build a sustainable adventure movement. The study aimed to understand ideas related to best practices and successful strategies for expanding outdoor adventure education participation. Findings exemplified for increasing outdoor adventure education include embracing a clear, unified message that establishes why outdoor adventure education matters as a tool, which can lead to achieving sustainability, driving innovation, and inspiring servant leadership. A second key finding calls for outdoor adventure education to be part of something larger and through integration into the larger experiential education and sustainability movements it may reach critical mass.
Key Words: outdoor adventure education, sustainability, servant leadership, innovation, social movement, experiential education

Full textThe purpose of this essay is to examine how the adventure is accomplished as a project, and how this is vindicated, through science or by other means. The scientists of today are not seen as adventurers or heroes, at least not as they used to, but this image lives on as a sort of role or social institution, that can be used by anyone and in any purpose. These roles could be seen as a type of rules for the modern adventurer, and act both as a limit or a possibility. This essay compares two North Pole travelers, Ola Skinnarmo and Salomon August Andrée.
