Abstract:
How one communicates concerns about another person’s actions or performance can significantly affect both the extent to which the feedback improves behavior as well as the quality of the ongoing relationship with the feedback recipient. This article reviews evidence-based principles for delivering corrective feedback and describes an engaging classroom exercise designed to help Organizational Behavior students learn about and apply these principles. Students are presented with a set of dilemmas written as letters to a fictitious advice columnist, “Dear Obby” (pronounced “OB”). The letters, describing situations that call for corrective feedback, can be student-generated or provided by the instructor. Teaching tips are included to help instructors use the scenarios to generate discussion about the goals and principles of effective feedback and to give students opportunities to practice feedback skills in role-plays.

Jou, Chin. "The Progressive Era Body Project: Calorie-Counting and “Disciplining the Stomach” in 1920s America." Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era 18, no. 4 (October 9, 2018): 422–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s1537781418000348.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the scientific origins of the calorie date back to the 1820s, calorie counting for weight loss only became popular in the late 1910s and 1920s. Placing this development in the broader context of the Progressive Era, this article considers how calorie counting and the reconstitution of food as calories reflected the period's fixation with science, rationalization, and quantification. This article also situates calorie counting within shifting bodily ideals among white women in the 1920s, and the ways in which class and race informed the promotion of the slender body as the feminine ideal. The second half of this article focuses on exchanges between Lulu Hunt Peters, a syndicated newspaper columnist and the author of a best-selling calorie-counting guide, and advice-seeking readers of her column. While Peters presented calorie counting as empowering for dieters and a way for them to seize control over their weight, her calorie-restriction program facilitated a new form of bodily discipline and self-regulation during a period that saw enhanced forms of surveillance in other areas of life.

Abstract:
This content analysis compares the astrological advice offered in magazines targeted at working- and middle-class women. Readers' social class was a far better predictor than readers' zodiac sign of the nature of astrological advice offered. Working-class horoscopes were less likely than middle-class horoscopes to advise readers to travel and spend money. Working-class horoscopes were less likely than middle-class horoscopes to predict career-related advances and positive interactions with family, friends, and lovers. Readers of both classes were commonly advised to nurture others, be patient and cooperative, and avoid confrontations rather than assert themselves, but middle-class readers were encouraged more frequently than working-class readers to expect some autonomy.

Abstract:
In the period 1945-1965 most women in the state of Queensland, Australia, gave birth in hospitals and thereafter they used a variety of services and individuals for advice on infant feeding. The services available were similar throughout the period. As mothers rarely worked outside the home, being <em>good mothers</em> was important to their identity. In this historical study, telephone interviews and written responses involving 44 mothers and former nurses from every region of this geographically vast state were used in order to investigate sources of personal advice on infant feeding used during this period, mothers&rsquo; experience relating to this advice, and the extent to which they followed the advice. The free, nurse-run well-baby clinics and related services conducted by the state&rsquo;s Maternal and Child Welfare service were the most commonly mentioned services. However, the uptake of advice from this source showed considerable variation as women also drew upon family members, their general practitioners, advice columns, radio broadcasts, other mothers and their own judgment. Only rarely was a specialist pediatrician consulted. A minority of mothers was advised by pharmacists, private baby nurses, or entered residential mothercraft facilities. An important finding is that attendance at the baby clinics did not necessarily equate with compliance, especially as mothers became more experienced.

Abstract:
With the increase of glass bridges or glass walkways in the scenic area, the safety protection provided by railings cannot be neglected. However, there is a difference between the demands for a horizontal load on the top of railings in the present design specifications. Especially, it does not give specific advice on the horizontal load on the top of railings of glass bridges or glass roads in the scenic area. In this study, experimental research is conducted on railing columns based on the investigation of common railings of glass bridges or glass roads in the scenic area. The type of railing columns includes finished products and field production. The number of railing columns is 12. The displacement and strain results of the railing columns under different loads are obtained. The rigidity and strength are analyzed by numerical simulation combined with test results. A reasonable horizontal load on the top of the railings of a glass bridge or glass road is advised. These results provide a reference for the design, inspection, and evaluation of railings of glass bridges or gallery roads in the scenic area.

Abstract:
Abstract To properly understand sex education, it is important to consider the informal education that takes place outside the classroom. Students often seek out other resources to supplement the education they receive in school, especially to cover topics which are absent or underdeveloped in the formal sex education curriculum. A key resource for this, especially among young women, is the magazine advice column. Advice columns create a direct interaction between the reader and the magazine and encourage the disclosure of intimate, confidential information, making them a ready medium for the production and consumption of sex education. This study uses the advice columns in Dolly, a popular Australian magazine, to investigate adolescents’ concerns about normality. This research is based on a corpus of 88,000 words, with data from advice columns published 20 years apart (mid-1990s and mid-2010s), which is analyzed using keywords and concordancing. This is a unique corpus study in that it considers similarity as well as difference in the data by investigating the recurring concern with normality that is evident in both decades of the corpus.

Abstract:
This study investigates changes in sex education advice from the 1990s to the 2010s. Our research is based on the analysis of an 88,000 word corpus of advice columns from Dolly, a beauty, lifestyle and celebrity magazine aimed at Australian girls. The data are taken from 1994, 1995, 2014 and 2015, with both decades compared against each other to identify any potential shifts in sex education advice. The study combines corpus linguistic techniques with analysis of evaluative language (appraisal). Our analysis reveals a preoccupation with sexual health in the 1990s, shifting to a preoccupation with mental health in the 2010s. We identify a discourse of risk and safety and a discourse of pleasure in the 1990s, and medicalising and normalising discourses of mental health in the 2010s. We also consider interactions between question and answer in the advice pages, to better understand how discourses are introduced and negotiated in such written dialogic texts.

Abstract:
This article explores the psychologized interstices between the appearance of women's bodies and their ‘inner selves’. Using a Foucauldian analysis with feminist undertones, several ways in which psychological discourses are deployed in ‘crises’ of ‘physical unattractiveness’ in advice texts, are examined. The work of Wendy Hollway on the positioning of women and men in heterosexual relationship practice is taken, critically, as a starting point. This positioning of women is situated within a web of psychologized knowledges and practices which labour to divide women's bodies from their inner psyches/selves. Psychologization is discussed in terms of the rewards of power offered women for subjection; and the ways in which it resists feminist arguments about the social, ideological or discursive framing of women's bodies, while holding conventional gendered positionings and heterosexual relationship practices in place.

Abstract:
Social norms about the conduct of married life change over time. This paper examines New Zealand norms about marital infidelity as represented in the agony aunt columns of the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly in 1950. It concludes that sexual adventures outside of marriage constituted a significant challenge to contemporary beliefs about trust and romantic love within it, and that women facing this dilemma were given the task of saving the marriage. However, advice on how to do this was contradictory, from withholding sex while enduring the situation with dignity, to Freudian psychologists’ instruction to provide the straying husband with more and better sex.

Abstract:
Men’s help-seeking behaviour for health issues is apparent in advice columns in men’s magazines. This study discursively analysed men’s help-seeking letters and expert replies within two international and popular men’s magazines, Men’s Health and For Him Magazine or FHM. Findings showed that the texts reinforced hegemonic ideals. Letters positioning men as self-reliant, independently knowledgeable, stoic and avoiding associations with femininity were positively reinforced in expert replies, while other types of positioning were responded to with condescension or ridicule. Results suggest the policing of boundaries by ‘experts’ around unacceptable/acceptable enactments of masculinity, which may have implications for if, how and when men seek help from experts.

The testing of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) latticed columns with initial stress had been conducted under axial load. The set-ups subjected to initial stress, the curves of load to deformation as well as the hooping effect were analyzed. The trial results indicate that the CFST columns with initial stress have smaller of combined stiffness and ultimate load-carrying capacity as compared with CFST columns without initial stress. Furthermore, the presence of initial stress will advance the coming of plastic phase, and contemporary, put off the appearances of hooping effect so that it cannot be sufficient exerted, which decrease the ultimate load-carrying capacity at all. Nevertheless, the mechanical behaviour of lacing tubes does not vary with the initial stress and all the lace tubes are stayed in the elastic phase during the testing.

Abstract:
The steel-concrete hybrid structure is a new special industrial structure in large thermal power plants. It is composed of a spatial steel truss and steel-concrete tubular columns. Its stiffness and mass is highly non-uniform at vertical direction. Its temperature effect is obvious because its steel truss is a high order statically indeterminate structure. Types and characteristics of temperature load prescribed in codes are introduced. Temperature effect of the steel-concrete hybrid structure is calculated by FEM analysis software SAP2000 in four different supporting blocks. The structural internal force and distortion under temperature effect is analyzed. The influence of supporting blocks on the structual temperature effect is analyzed. The structural supporting block form to advantageously release its temperature effect is presented. Some advice is presented based on the analysis results.

Abstract:
The construction industry in Ghana is becoming efficient in the area of cost and achieving advance technologies. The effective management of cost enables clients, developers, and facilitators to achieve value for money. Concrete is a major component in every construction project. The use of precast concrete technology has been embraced by the construction industry in Ghana. This study seeks to analyze cost estimating of the structural frame (column and slab) by considering cast-in-place and precast concrete slabs and columns, respectively. Relative importance and Kendall’s concordance agreement were used to determine the rankings and agreement of advantages of using precast concrete. The study established that precast concrete slabs were on average 23.22% cheaper than the cast-in-place concrete elements and precast columns were averagely 21.4% less than cast-in-place concrete columns. The study established that professionals prefer the use of precast concrete products because of the life cycle cost.

In this article I explore the production of teen girl comics such as Marilyn, Mirabelle, Roxy and Valentine in the promotion of pop music and pop stars from 1955 to 1960. These comics developed alongside early pop music and consisted of serial and self-contained picture stories, beauty and pop music articles, advice columns, and horoscopes. Materiality is a key component of the importance of comics in the promotional culture in a media landscape in which pop music was difficult to access for teenage girls. I analyze the comics within their historical and cultural framework and show how early British pop stars were constructed through paradoxical discourses such as religion, consumerism, and national identity to make them safe for teen girl consumption. The promotion of these star images formed the foundation for later pop music promotion and girl fan practices.

Abstract:
Distillation columns are widely used in chemical industry as unit operation and required advance process control because it has multi input multi output (MIMO) or multi-variable system, which is hard to be controlled. Model predictive control (MPC) is one of alternative controller developed for MIMO system due to loops interaction to be controlled. This study aimed to obtain dynamic model of process control on a distillation column using MPC, and to get the optimum performance of MPC controller. Process control in distillation columns performed by simulating the dynamic models of distillation columns by UNISIM R390.1 software. The optimization process was carried out by tuning the MPC controller parameters such as sampling time (Ts = 1 – 240 s), prediction horizon (P = 1-400), and the control horizon (M=1-400). The comparison between the performance of MPC and PI controller is presented and Integral Absolut Error (IAE) was used as comparison parameter. The results indicate that the performance of MPC was better than PI controller for set point change 0.95 to 0.94 on distillate product composition using a modified model 1 with IAE 0.0584 for MPC controller and 0.0782 for PI controller.

Therefore, the present work attempts to characterize this position of appointed, or hired, teachers who were involved in the process of education of children in Polish families in time of partitions. The main problem is approached from the two following perspectives – the aim of the article is to: 1) indicate more precisely the status of private tutors, their social background, goals to be attained by them, their duties, responsibilities and conditions of work, i.e. a determination of their real participation in the education of children from Polish families during the time under scrutiny; and also 2) to show the contemporary standpoint expressed by the then educational columnists and journalists on the very idea of private tutoring and private tutors, as well as their postulates, recommendations to be followed and advice concerning hired teaching staff. The source material for the present analysis of the capacity and function of private tutors has been provided by relevant educational literature for professionals and parents written in the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, professional educational periodicals and women’s and family magazines of the time. The source materials provide an excellent base for a determination of the extent and the scope of the interest of the contemporary columnists and journalists in this group of private tutors and private tutelage at the time, but also present the attitude towards the phenomenon manifested by the general public. The analysis is supplemented with additional material excerpted from contemporary memoirs and diaries that serve here as a useful illustration of the reality and practice in the actual teaching process of appointed tutors in the times of national freedom struggle in Poland.

Abstract:
The recent note by J.D. Watson in Science (1993) is another of the periodical advice columns in which someone of renown gives his or her perspective of how to succeed in this most difficult of fields. And a very good article it is. I find no fault with any of the four rules presented which I quote as follows: 1) “To succeed in science you have to avoid dumb people.” 2) “To make a huge success, a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble.” 3) “Be sure you always have someone up your sleeve who will save you when you find yourself in deep s—.” 4) “Never do anything that bores you.” Unfortunately, these four rules are directed to a level of scientist that clearly bypasses most of us irrespective of how many good intentions we may have. Therefore I feel obliged to submit a revised list of thoughts for us average beings who plow through the days in an average research environment.

Abstract:
Abstract There are few cultural representations or scripts available for LGBTQ aging. Among bisexual and otherwise non-monosexual (bi+) women, stereotypes of hypersexuality exclude older adults while the contrasting experience of invisibility obscures the existence of bi+ aging. In this discourse analysis, we examined three issues of the Bi Women Quarterly (BWQ) newsletter published between 2014-2019 which were devoted to the intersection of aging and bisexuality. Data include 42 narratives, personal reflections, interviews, poems, letters, advice columns, and photos which were analyzed to identify linguistic tools, visual imagery, and broader discourses used to construct and convey the meaning and experience of bisexual aging. Themes include: 1) lacking a “blueprint” for bisexual lives, 2) significant “turning points,” 3) intergenerational (dis)connections across history, and 4) life-long patterns of discovery and disclosure. More visible and diverse narratives for bisexual aging might better enable bi+ individuals to envision and effectively plan for their own aging futures.

Abstract:
Vinasse is produced at high amounts by the ethanol and sugarcane spirits industries. Although the effects of vinasse on soil attributes are well elucidated, little is known about its effects on sorption and leaching of lead (Pb) from soils. This work evaluated the Pb sorption and leaching from disturbed topsoil samples (0-20 cm) of an Inceptisol, under the influence of sugarcane vinasse. Pb sorption was evaluated by batch sorption method, using air-dried samples (< 2 mm) treated with pure (100%), and diluted (20%, and 50%) vinasse. The amended soil samples were further reacted with 0.05; 0.10; 0.25; 0.50, and 0.75 mmol L-1 of Pb. To measure the Pb leached, soil columns were packed in PVC tubes, 12-cm long with 4-cm internal diameter filled with 200 g of treated soil. The vinasse doses applied over the columns corresponded to 0 (control), 150 and 300 m³ ha-1. Seven days later, 5 mL of a Pb solution (100 mmol L-1) was applied on the columns; they were successively leached and Pb was measured in the leachates. The vinasse increased the maximum sorption capacity and binding energy of Pb with the soil when at equilibrium conditions. However, at non-equilibrium conditions, the vinasse enhanced the Pb leaching. From these results, it is advised that special attention must be given to Pb contaminated areas where vinasse is applied.

Abstract:
AbstractThere is circumstantial and documentary evidence that printing from stereotype plates was being undertaken by Joseph Athias in Amsterdam no later than September 1673. The terms of an agreement of that date between Athias and the Widow Schippers and Anna Maria Stam imply that he had two English bibles in plates, one a twelvemo, the other an eighteenmo. The eighteenmo can be equated with an edition with engraved title-page with the imprint 'Cambridge, Roger Daniel, 1648', the last in a sequence of four with the same imprint, each of which carries over from its predecessor a certain amount of setting. The earliest in the sequence appears to have been printed by Joachim Nosche in Amsterdam. That the fourth was impressed at least six times is suggested by the fact that it was printed on six or more discrete papers, thus implying that it was either kept standing or plated. That it was indeed plated at some stage of its life, and that the plates consisted of columns (not pages), is confirmed by the observable differences in alignment of the columns from exemplar to exemplar, particular alignments agreeing with particular papers. Athias's primacy in the history of stereotyping is thus established. From among the many librarians who have assisted me during this investigation I should like to thank in particular Dr Lotte Hellinga, whose advice in the early stages proved especially helpful. Abstract:
For distillation column design it is necessary to define all the variable parameters such as component concentrations in different streams temperatures, pressures, mass and energy flow, which are used to represent the separation process of some specific system. They are related to each other according to specific laws, and if the number of such parameters exceeds the number of their relationships, in order to solve a problem some of them must be specified in advance or some constraints assumed for the mass balance, the balance of energy, phase equilibria or chemical equilibria. Knowledge of specific elements which are the constituents of a distillation unit must be known to define the number of design parameters as well as some additional apparati also necessary to realize the distilation. Each separate apparatus might be designed and constructed only if all the necessary and variable parameters for such a unit are defined. This is the right route to solve a distilation unit in many different cases. The construction of some distillation unit requires very good knowledge of mass, heat and momentum transfer phenomena. Moreover, the designer needs to know which kind of apparatus will be used in the distillation unit to realize a specific production process. The most complicated apparatus in a rectification unit is the distillation column. Depending on the complexity of the separation process one, two or more columns are often used. Additional equipment are heat exchangers (reboilers, condensers, cooling systems, heaters), separators, tanks for reflux distribution, tanks and pumps for feed transportation, etc. Such equipment is connected by pipes and valves, and for the normal operation of a distillation unit other instruments for measuring the flow rate, temperature and pressure are also required. Problems which might arise during the determination and selection of such apparati and their number requires knowledge of the specific systems which must be separated. The experience of the designer and his creativity for proposing a solution for an industrial unit which enables optimal process operation accompanied with minimal energy consumption, as well as a small number of apparati, and minimal total length of pipes and number of instruments is always a valuable additional effect for minimal investment costs and an optimal production process.

Abstract:
Statically indeterminate frame, composed of beams and columns, is a widely used structure form in civil engineering. The frame carrying capacity under various actions is related to the absolute stiffness of frame components and relative beam-column line stiffness ratio. The matrix displacement method and programming based on MATLAB were employed in this study to calculate the internal forces and displacements of a 2-bay 2-story frame structure under the action of horizontal loads. The influence of the beam-column line stiffness ratio on the frame load capacity was discussed based on the calculated result. Furthermore some advises were provided about the reasonable beam-column line stiffness ratio for engineering design.

Abstract:
Tornadoes are columns of air in very high rotation, which have high destructive power. The phenomenon happens in Brazil, but its occurrence is little recognized. In this work, we intend to characterize the multiple vortex tornado that occurred in Marechal Cândido Rondon and Quatro Pontes in 2015, to find out if there was the possibility of identifying the hook echo in the radar image. For that, the images made available by the Meteorology System of Paraná were compared with the course of the phenomenon. The analyzes performed allowed the glimpse of a hook in the area of occurrence, demonstrating that the event had a signature. However, the subscription took place very quickly, with only 7 minutes in advance.

Abstract:
The concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced gypsum wall panel is a kind of panel that the inside cavums of the glass fiber hollow gypsum panel is filled with concrete. The experimental results indicate that the concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced gypsum wall panel which has a better performance of the force and can be used to be the bearing wall of a building can form a novel structural system. When the beams supporting the wall panels, the wall panels which under the beams is in local state of compression. It were gained that when the wall panels are in the local compression state , local pressure loads are primarily borne by the concrete core columns and fiber gypsum board will damage in advance through the eighteen experimental wall panel specimens which in local compression. The test results show that the final destruction of the concrete is caused by being crushed and the contribution of the gypsum wall panel to local compression bearing is small. Compressive stress can only spread in the local loading on concrete core columns, cannot be expanded into an adjacent stud. Finally, the local compression bearing capacity calculation formula of the concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced gypsum wall panel is obtained by analysis of the test results.

Abstract:
Based on the research and exploration of the construction process of the steel reinforced concrete composite structure, this paper summarizes a set of systematic improvement methods for the design and construction of the section steel concrete composite structure. This method first improves the construction method of node connection. Splicing plates are staggered at the beam end to reduce the number of bolts. The BIM technology is employed to build a three-dimensional model to optimize the construction layout of the core area of the steel composite structure. In addition, the precise positioning of beams, columns, splicing plates, stiffeners, bolts, and welds can be obtained in advance. Therefore, the whole process of visualized construction can be realized to reduce construction cost and improve construction efficiency.

Abstract:
We here review the evolution of invasive placentation in primates towards the deep penetration of the endometrium and its arteries in hominoids. The strepsirrhine primates (lemurs and lorises) have non-invasive, epitheliochorial placentation, although this is thought to be derived from a more invasive type. In haplorhine primates, there is differentiation of trophoblast at the blastocyst stage into syncytial and cellular trophoblast. Implantation involves syncytiotrophoblast that first removes the uterine epithelium then consolidates at the basal lamina before continuing into the stroma. In later stages of pregnancy, especially in Old World monkeys and apes, cytotrophoblast plays a greater role in the invasive process. Columns of trophoblast cells advance to the base of the implantation site where they spread out to form a cytotrophoblastic shell. In addition, cytotrophoblasts advance into the lumen of the spiral arteries. They are responsible for remodelling these vessels to form wide, low-resistance conduits. In human and great apes, there is additional invasion of the endometrium and its vessels by trophoblasts originating from the base of the anchoring villi. Deep trophoblast invasion that extends remodelling of the spiral arteries to segments in the inner myometrium evolved in the common ancestor of gorilla, chimp and human.
