Abstract:
Parenting advice has becomea booming industry as well as probably one of the most contested discourses. Its proliferation and continued diversification are often considered a particularly contemporary problem, yet the virulent marketing of “expert” advice on childrearing has its roots as much in the nineteenth-century publishing industry as in the overlapping Victorian cults of domesticity, maternity, and childhood. The nineteenth century saw an explosion of advice literature on the physical, moral, and intellectual education of infants and young children. Childrearing, or parenting, rapidly created a niche market, producing specialised manuals and magazines for mothers, the precursors of the current parenting advice literature. As Victorian novelists tapped into the anxieties that these publications both addressed and further fostered, they laid bare the pressure that the childrearing discourses were exerting on mothers, yet popular authors also quickly realised how their own writing offered a vehicle for specific conceptualisations of motherhood. Harrowing scenes were used to dramatise the effects of different parenting practices; protagonists’ quarrels about such practices served both as characterisation devices and as comments on ideological conflicts between different concepts of childrearing. In the most self-consciously insightful moments, the growing supply of information came itself under criticism. Victorian novelists actively participated in shaping and circulating parenting advice in print. The sensationalised nursery fascinatingly expressed the anxieties surrounding childrearing and showed how versatile the interpellation of mothering instructions in fiction could be.

Abstract:
This article explores the relationship between discourse and action by examining the role of expert advice in everyday parenting practices. Drawing upon the notions of dialogicality (Bakhtin, 1981), intertextuality (Kristeva, 1986), and repetition (Tannen, 2007) and incorporating insights from Mediated Discourse Analysis (e. g., Scollon, 1998; Scollon and Scollon, 2007; Norris and Jones, 2005), this work analyzes instances in which the actions of parents in three American families can be traced back to various public texts on parenting. Such relationship between text and action is identified as intertextuality in action (Author, 2005, 2020), or when public texts serve as resources for the verbal and non-verbal everyday actions of parents. It is further suggested that by adopting a positive, childcentered approach to parenting from literature and trained childcare professionals, parents themselves are socialized into the contemporary Discourse (Gee, 1999, 2015) of parenting. The analysis of the “repetition” of the words of experts in family (inter)actions also illuminates the dialogic relationship between the public and private spheres.

Abstract:
Recent years have seen an explicit focus on parenting as a designated area of policy intervention. Parents are posed as in need of education and advice from ‘experts’, under conditions of social change. This article counterposes norms concerning who parents should turn to for support that government policies aim to inculcate with those held by parents themselves, drawing on a national representative sample of parents of 8–12 year old children. It uses a ‘consensus baseline’ approach to look at parents' perceptions of social change in parenting support, and whether or not they hold norms concerning whom to turn to and for what sort of help in parenting: practical, emotional, behaviour, health and education. Our results indicate that policy-makers have more work to do if they want to achieve a cultural step-change in norms held by parents about who is best placed to help and advice them. Family, followed by friends, are (still) regarded as the people to turn to for most childrearing issues, with ‘experts’ only providing practical help and advice about long institutionalised areas of children's lives. We also show that norms about parenting support are related to parents' differential social positioning regarding gender, class and ethnicity.

Abstract Neuroparenting: Between apocalypse and utopiaNeuroscience increasingly invades all domains of our lives, including the intimate realm of child raising and parenting. The current trend of neuroparenting, that is parenting advice based on neuroscientific research, fits this development. This article analyses this development from an ethical point of view. We will outline the current developments in the domain of neuroparenting with a special focus on the so-called ‘baby brain’ and ‘adolescent brain’. To discuss corresponding promises and perils, we do not only provide an overview of current studies developing ethical arguments, but we will also present several blind spots in that debate. We will conclude with some advice on how to integrate neuroscience findings in parenting practice in the most ethical way and point out limits that ought to be respected.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to report on new parents’ experiences of using the available range of parenting resources that help to guide parenting choices and practices. Using a semi-structured interview schedule, 30 participants were asked about their engagement with parenting resources. The types of resources considered most salient to the participants of this study in Victoria, Australia, included professional services, peers, family and friends, and written material. On the whole, these parents valued expert opinion when they encountered problems but experienced a level of frustration when they did not ‘feel heard’ by professionals or when faced with mixed messages. While they reported some resistance to overt advice offered by family and friends, especially if the information was considered ‘out-dated’, they relied heavily on informal advice and support from peers, even if this was supported only by anecdotal evidence.

Abstract:
This study utilized the perspective of critical discourse analysis to examine the introductory chapter of the third edition of the Searses’ seminal book on attachment parenting, The Baby Book. Focused mainly on the use of language within the text by parenting “experts,” a qualitative approach was taken to elucidate the text within its historical and cultural context. Throughout the analysis, we found that despite endorsing practices that counter the standard parenting advice, The Baby Book discourse remains firmly placed in the tradition of benevolent paternalism. Our analysis revealed how values surrounding parenting are constructed and reconstructed within a parenting manual by enforcing traditional gender roles. This text continues in the historical tradition of parenting “experts” using language to reinforce the dominant discourse around parenting practices, including gender role reinforcement.

Abstract:
lasting impact on the child's life. Parenting is a process of internalizing the values of life and character to children. Parenting implications will be reflected in the child's character in the future. The weak character of today's children, which is often exposed by the media, is certainly part of the impact of parenting. Muslims have a parenting pattern that is believed to be comprehensive parenting, known as prophetic parenting. Prophetic parenting is a parenting pattern that is abstracted from the values taught by the Prophet. There are five parenting concepts taught by the Prophet, namely: qudwah hasanah (good example), mauidzah hasanah (good advice), al-'adah (habituation), al-mulahadzah (care), uqubah wa kataah (proportionate). This Community Service Program (PKM) provides reinforcement to parents about this parenting. The method used is tabligh (counseling and recitation) at women's meetings, recitation at the Al-Hikmah prayer room. So that through two meetings at the Taklim Mushollah Al-hikmah assembly it can be understood for majlis mothers in the role of a mother raising children in the implementation of Rasulullah SAW's parenting style.

Abstract:
Children need education to increase their roles in society. Children education through formal, non-formal, and/or informal education is held to improve the quality of children's skills. Given the huge and importance of the process of parenting education, hence this study aims to determine the influence of parenting on children. Children are great blessings people must be grateful for, hence they deserve the best parenting by their parents. However, parents still treat their children differently. This discussion aims to identify various styles or methods of parenting and their impacts on children. This discussion consisted of four types of parenting proposed by Eisenburg et al. These parenting types are more specific and focused on children’s gender development than other parenting styles that are more general. The four types of parenting are channeling/shaping, direct introduction, differential treatment, and models. There are four types of parenting model according to some psychologists, which are authoritative parenting, neglectful parenting, permissive parenting, and democratic parenting. These four types have their own impacts. While some other opinions believe that authoritative parenting style has 6 (six) parenting styles, which are: Accept children's opinion, Ask about children's mistakes without accusing them, Give advice upon their mistakes, Give appreciation, Give presents, and Facilitate their hobbies.

Abstract:
This paper comprises a collection of illustrations, along with background information, analysis, and commentary, from “baby books”—advice books published in the United States for a parent audience from the 1890s to the 1980s. These publications, and especially their drawings and photos, provide a window on past child rearing practices and beliefs. The paper provides historical background on parenting behaviors such as toilet training and infant feeding, then traces changes over time through drawings and photos that appeared in parenting advice publications. These publications grew in popularity as changing work and family structures removed traditional sources of information for parents, and scientific information and expert guidance took their place. Publications from a variety of sources, but especially the U.S. Children’s Bureau, are explored. A finding of note is that images of babies and their families, which in earlier publications were entirely white and middle class, became more diverse over time. The author concludes that published parental advice from professionals made for a fascinating study, was ideologically driven, and often lacked a basis in empirical scientific knowledge of child development, and therefore asserts that parents may regard such advice conditionally.

Donna Peach in conversation with Dr Abigail Locke, who presented a keynote on ‘Constructing (and resisting) the ‘good parenting’ mandate’ at the POWS Annual Conference, July 2014.We were delighted to have Abi deliver her keynote, which interrogated aspects of contemporary parenting. Firstly, Abi explored the discursive constructions of parenting, highlighting the difficulties in resisting dominant discourses of mothering and fathering. The complexity for parents was illuminated in representations of good parenting advice, present in parenting books and media reports. Abi then moved her lens onto the messages from research, undertaken by herself and others, which critically examine constructs of motherhood and, more recently, stay at home dads. A further theme explored by Abi was the use of social media platforms such as ‘mumsnet’ and ‘netmums’. This interview further explores Abi’s views of the ability of these forums to extend and constrain contemporary constructions of parenting.

Abstract:
Is there a point where parental effort can be too much? While the link between parenting effort and the wellbeing of children has been firmly established, contemporary discussion has proposed that extreme levels of parental protection of and responsiveness to children could be counterproductive. Research has not yet addressed this phenomenon to ascertain if overparenting is a genuinely different type of parenting approach. The purpose of the present study was to gain insight into the parenting actions considered by parenting professionals (psychologists and school guidance counsellors) to be overparenting. One hundred and twenty-eight professionals responded to an online survey about their observations of overparenting, with eighty-six respondents providing lists of the types of actions they believed were behavioural examples of the term. The survey data revealed that certain types of actions were considered to be indicative of overparenting, and that particular beliefs and outcomes may be involved in this parenting approach. Implications for parenting advice and education programs, and further research are discussed.

Islamic treasures have a parenting concept originating from the Holy Qur’an and the Hadith. I call this Islamic parenting concept a Holistic Parenting. Samples used in this study were as follows: five parents during the data elicitation stage, 228 male and female teenagers during the try-out stage and 616 16-to-17-year-old teenagers during the primary data collection stage. Based on the internal consistency test and construct validity test, the holistic parenting scale has a good validity and reliability. This scale is capable of measuring the same construct consistently, and is valid to measure the construct holistic parenting consisting of five dimensions namely: qudwah hasanah (integrated role model), al addah (habituation), al mauidzah (effective advice), al mulahadzah (fairness in care and control), and uqubah wa ujaroh (proportional consequences). Through the psychometric standard procedure that has been undergone, the holistic parenting scale presented in this study has been able to be employed to measure parents’ parenting capability over their sons and daughters in the Muslim family in Indonesia.

Abstract:
In educational research, digital technology has received considerable attention, and in early childhood studies this has largely focused, understandably, on children. Our concern here is with the figure of the parent and on a specific digital technology ‐ apps designed for parents. While apps can be seen as a digital extension of existing information and advice that has proliferated in the turn to parenting, and exhibits many of the characteristics of the parenting culture ‐ for example, positioning parents as in need of education, drawing predominantly from developmental psychology and neuroscience ‐ the particular affordances of apps draw attention to a more profound shift in how we understand what it means to raise children today, particularly if we reassert the representational ‐ political, pedagogical ‐ dimension of the figure of the parent. This article considers the implications of parenting apps for the position of the parent in the parent‐child relationship. Key focuses in the critical sociological literature on the ‘parenting culture’ and the increasing digitisation of our daily lives are summarised to show how parenting apps can be seen as an extension of the instrumentalisation, scientisation and psychologisation identified therein. A pedagogical-philosophical register is introduced, however, informed by Stanley Cavell’s account of initiation in forms of life and Klaus Mollenhauer’s account of upbringing, that brings out the political aspect of the figure of the parent as a representative figure situated between child and world. With reference to a selection of apps aimed at the period from pregnancy to three years old, we illustrate how, while sharing similarities with the existing sources of information and advice for parents, parenting apps are distinctive due to the personalisation, visualisation and notion of community they offer. Hence, what appears as a politicisation of parents through a sociological lens is seen as a depoliticisation of parents through a pedagogical-philosophical lens.

Abstract:
This article examines recent Japanese and UK policy recommendations on parenting practices and highlights the absence of material resources in these discussions. Parenting has gained increased prominence in recent decades. In the realm of policy, there has been an expansive shift; from a narrowly focused concern with detecting neglect and abuse to the wider project of promoting ‘good’ parenting. Focusing on advice offered in relation to education and food, we note that in both Japan and the UK the relationship between money and the ability to perform idealised parenting practices is rarely mentioned. Our comparative analysis also highlights that this silence is handled differently in the two national contexts, and we suggest that this reflects different historical interests in poverty and inequality. In Japan, parents are encouraged to undertake activities that require financial resources, but the question of how poor parents should manage is left largely unanswered: in the UK, the parenting activities given greatest attention are those that do not rely on money, meaning that poverty can be left off the positive parenting agenda.

This article focuses on ‘the turn to parenting’ in the Netherlands and embeds it in a major reform called ‘transition and transformation’. While support for parenting by way of public healthcare and denominational family care and advice has a long tradition in the Netherlands, the field gained new importance in the 1990s under the influence of medical and psychological ‘scientification’ and the introduction of evidence-based methods. Current reforms are modulated with a critique of specialised forms of parent support and (re-)introduce a community- and family-based approach in which professionals are charged with helping families to help themselves and with guiding and supervising volunteers who actually do the job of parenting support.

This article examines Black young adult parents' reliance on grandmothers for parenting support. The sample of 487 parents, 18 to 34 years old, was drawn from the National Survey of Black Americans. Parents most often nominated grandmothers as the person they could count on for child care assistance and parental guidance. Mothers and fathers did not differ in their overall nominations of grandmothers. However, mothers were more likely than fathers to rely on grandmothers for both child care assistance and parenting advice. Fathers were more likely than mothers to rely on grandmothers for child care assistance only. Factors affecting parents' reliance on grandmothers for parenting support varied by gender. For mothers, family closeness, the number of generations in multigeneration family lineages, residence in the rural South, and family proximity were related to increased reliance on grandmothers for parenting support. Among fathers, being employed and family proximity increased their reliance on grandmothers.

Abstract The character of a child is closely related to the upbringing he receives from his caregiver; in other words, good parenting will also have a positive impact on the child, and the character possessed by a child is a reflection of the parenting style provided by the caregiver. Abstract:
Chile, like many other countries in the world, is experiencing a high prevalence of childhood overweight. Among the factors influencing children’s eating behaviors are the food parenting practices promoted by community organizations. More information is needed on the influences of these recommendations on the parenting practices of parents of preschoolers. This study examined what types of food parenting practices are promoted in childcare and primary healthcare centers and how these recommendations influence subsequent parental behavior. Interviews using photo-elicitation were conducted with 25 parents of Chilean preschoolers. The interviews were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Five themes were identified to describe food parenting practices promoted by community organizations and the influences that these practices had on parents of preschoolers. Healthcare centers were found to educate parents and provided a structured feeding. However, parents found their advice regarding dietary restriction challenging to follow. Childcare centers also provided information about healthy diet, food monitoring, and diversifying the child’s diet in a way that was perceived as adequate. While childcare centers encouraged structured and autonomous food parenting practices in a positive and supportive manner, healthcare centers tended to provide more restrictive guidance that posed challenges for parents struggling with preschool nutritional care.

Abstract:
The existing critical literature on constructions of childhood and parenthood is only beginning to listen to what parents have to say. As a result, parents may paradoxically be viewed as passive victims and therefore reduced to be the spectators of what is supposed to be their ‘problem’. The present study analyses dominant parent advice texts in the Flemish community of Belgium, as well as the voices of parents on the Internet. The study confirms the tendencies noticed in critical literature: the tendency to individualize responsibilities and the focus on autonomy in the neoliberal era. In addition it unveils the double bind nature of autonomy in expert discourse. It also illustrates the performative agency of parents, as co-constructors of dominant discourse as well as contesting this discourse. In so doing, the study complements the existing vein of literature with the way in which parents think of and experience the dominant parenting discourse.

Abstract:
Purpose: To develop a culturally-sensitive intervention for the early prevention of gender-based violence (GBV) in Uganda. Methods: Programme design followed the 6SQuID model of intervention development and multi-sectorial advice. A formative evaluation was conducted in two communities with six groups and 138 participants. Findings: Four familial predictors of GBV were identified as potentially malleable: poor parent–child attachment, harsh parenting, inequitable gendered socialization and parental conflict. A community-based parenting programme was developed to address them. Its programme theory incorporates Attachment Theory, the concept that positive behavioural control develops emotional control, and Social Learning Theory. Its rationale, structure and content are presented using the TIDieR checklist. A formative evaluation showed the programme to be widely acceptable, culturally appropriate, and perceived to be effective, but also identified challenges. Conclusion: The careful development of this community-based parenting programme shows promise for the early prevention of GBV.

Abstract:
As parents, we must have a way of parenting and methods in the education process of the child. There are several methods in educating children, namely: democratic parenting, permissiveness and authority. And in providing care for children, several strategies are needed to provide education with exemplary methods, habituation, attention, advice and punishment methods. Of course, carrying out parenting and methods in the child's education process has an outline goal, namely to make the process of habituation to good things so that it affects the child's personality in adulthood. The main program is about the impact and how to address the problem of cyberbullying. Maybe this is often taken for granted, even though this can all be very fatal for the victim of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can happen to anyone, so we all have to take this seriously, so that a safe environment will be formed.

Abstract:
The paper sheds light on the invisible pedagogical dimension of pediatrician-parent interactions. It does so by adopting a Conversation Analysis-informed approach to a corpus of 23 video-recorded well-child visits involving two pediatricians and twenty-two families with children aged 0 to 18 months. In particular, the analysis focuses on how a mother seeks the pediatrician’s advice on everyday baby care issues. The single-case analysis is illustrative of how parents in this corpus, when seeking advice, perform themselves as “good” parents: competent and knowledgeable on caring practices, concerned by their children’s well-being, and concurrently sensitive to the ultimate epistemic and deontic authority of the pediatricians.
