Women persist in the field of economics at significantly lower rates than men. We show that the gender of an academic advisor is an important determinant of female undergraduates' persistence in economics. We use data from a four-year college where first-year economics majors are randomly assigned to advisors who are also faculty members in the economics department. Advisors help students choose courses and monitor their academic progress. We find that having a female advisor rather than a male advisor reduces female students' first-year dropout rates and increases their likelihood of graduati

Many older people in Australia sell their family home to fund a long term residential arrangement with a “retirement village”. The contracts are complex. Consumers usually lack the capacity to compare various retirement village contracts with each other or with other arrangements. We have designed a methodology for comparing such contracts via a comparison rent and other metrics. We are working towards developing a free online publicly available calculator and relevant educational material to facilitate informed decision making by consumers. Our proposed calculator will utilise publicly availa

It has been well documented that the ageing, male dominated profile of the workforce in the UK nuclear industry will not support the forecasted nuclear renaissance. Based upon the aspects of age, gender and level of education, there is an existing shortfall in available knowledgeable resource to undertake and manage the extensive new build, operational and decommissioning programmes. The 2005 Nuclear Employers Survey advised the industry to recruit and train more: • young and qualified people. • experienced and qualified people from outside the industry. In higher education, particularly in engineering schools, the increase in early dropout rates has been an indicator for questioning possible causes or aspects that affect student retention and success. In this context, establishing strategies for academic support and accompanying students is a priority. Therefore, student profiling is an approach to managing a diverse population for institutions. Research studies have shown that individual, social and attitudinal factors are related to academic performance. This audit study examines whether financial advisors’ recommendations vary by client gender. It provides evidence that women are more likely than men to receive low-quality financial advice from some types of advisory firms. We explain this as the result of firms’ incentives and advisors’ beliefs about gender differences in financial knowledge.

This project, led by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), focuses on the effects of the socioeconomic crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic on informal women workers in India, particularly street vendors in the context of shrinking state support and gaps in access to social security. The study emphasises the importance of understanding the specific opportunities and challenges faced by those engaged in informal work, especially women, so that policies are informed by and respond to their specific needs. It also provides valuable insights into how prevalent gender norms inte

The paper notes that a larger percentage of WMSMEs (1) find the lack of working capital, disruptions in the production/supply chain/business networks, a decline in domestic demand, and the lack of finances for digitization to be major obstacles; (2) find the lack of collateral/guarantee, high intere
