Abstract:
Nontraditional women students, defined as older than 24 years, parents, or veterans, compose a fast-growing higher education population. Many face identity-related challenges when interacting with advisors. From 2 northeastern U.S. women's colleges, 42 nontraditional women students participated in phenomenological interviews focused on their advising experiences, including the way advisors engaged with their identities. We classified 6 themes, 3 positive (guidance, identity recognition, advocacy) and 3 negative (indifference, identity marginalization, gatekeeping), that underscored the centrality of advisor engagement with identity for advisee-defined experiences. Advisors encouraged nontraditional women when recognizing intersectional identities as assets but also marginalized students through stereotyping or communicating low expectations. We highlight implications for future research and practice in this domain.

Abstract:
Presented analyses regarding academic-advisor job satisfaction are based on data from a survey administered to NACADA members in July 2005. Advisor job satisfaction in various environments and differences in satisfaction across personal demographics were studied. Academic advisors report high satisfaction overall as well as with student and supervision aspects of the job. Advisors are most satisfied with work variety, job benefits, and teamwork, and they are least satisfied with salary, recognition, and support for career opportunity. Environment variables most strongly related to job satisfaction were variety, empowerment, and teamwork. Advisors were least happy with the environment element of salary. Of the advisor variables, years of experience and advising style showed the strongest relationship with satisfaction. Relative Emphasis: practice, research, theory

Abstract:
This paper explores the impact of disclosures of bias on advisees. Disclosure—informing advisees of a potential bias—is a popular solution for managing conflicts of interest. Prior research has focused almost exclusively on disclosures of financial conflicts of interest but little is known about how disclosures of other types of biases could impact advisees. In medicine, for example, physicians often recommend the treatment they specialize in; e.g., surgeons are more likely to recommend surgery than nonsurgeons. In recognition of this bias, some physicians inform patients about their specialty bias when other similarly effective treatment options exist. Using field data (recorded transcripts of surgeon–patient consultations) from Veteran Affairs hospitals and a randomized controlled laboratory experiment, we examine and find that disclosures of specialty bias increase patients’ trust and their likelihood of choosing a treatment in accordance with the physicians’ specialty. Physicians in the field also increased the strength of their recommendation to have the specialty treatment when they disclosed their bias or discussed the opportunity for the patient to seek a consultation with a physician from another specialty. These findings have important implications for handling advisor bias, shared advisor–advisee decision-making, and disclosure policies.

Abstract:
At a time of increasing recognition worldwide of the role of Chief Science Advisers as of critical importance in improving dialogue between science and policy, the European Union, notably the European Commission, is currently considering – under the pressure of civil society organisations – whether to maintain or scrap this recently–created position. After contextualizing this debate within the broader efforts undertaken by the Barroso Commission to strengthen science in EU policymaking, this article discusses what role, if any, a Chief Scientist may play within the EU systemof scientific advice. After denouncing the lack of a public debate about the merits of this post at the time of its creation, the article takes as a point of departure the criticisms made against this position and assesses them in the light of the mandate entrusted to the Chief Scientist Advisor. It argues that the major point of disagreement on this post revolves around the question of whether the Chief Scientist Advisor, as it currently stands, helps or hinders the EU incorporating the ‘best science’ into policy. After identifying the flaws of the actual mandate and the challenges faced by the first holder of the position, it argues that the burden of proof rests with the EU Commission to prove the merits, and more specifically, the rationale for having yet another source of scientific advice in the EU.

Abstract:
In the last year, three respected leaders in academic advising, Wes Habley, Terry Kuhn, and Gary Padak, published articles suggesting that academic advising has not met the standards of scholarship to be considered a field of inquiry, an academic discipline, or a profession. In this article, we examine academic advising history from the perspective of the discipline of sociology, through which scholars systematically study the processes whereby activities are transformed from occupations into professions. Indeed, we agree that academic advising has not met the typical sociological standards that accompany societal recognition for a profession, and we suggest that strengthened advisor education and credentialing are the steps necessary to secure public recognition of academic advising as a profession.

Abstract:
Academic advising has been a part of United States (U.S.) colleges and universities since their inception, yet academic advising as we know it today is a relatively new profession. Over the last several decades, many colleges and universities have employed professional advisors, rather than teaching and learning faculty, to carry out the academic advising functions however little is known about the structures of these advising programs. Academic advisors often serve on the front lines (i.e., high student contact hours) and advocate for student success by supporting students in learning about their institutions, uncovering their personal and professional goals, and encouraging them to pursue life goals. However, the responsibility of academic advising and advisors varies at institutions of higher education across the country and this variation is not well understood. The purpose of this research was to better understand the structures of engineering academic advising at large four-year, primarily residential institutions with a first-year engineering program. To accomplish this purpose, the following overarching research question guided my study: How do first-year engineering programs structure academic advising, and what services, programs, and support are in place for academic advisors and students? To answer this question, I used a qualitative multi-case study design to understand the landscape of advising in first-year engineering programs and the organizational structures of their advising programs. I used Habley's Organizational Models for Academic Advising (1983) as a way to categorize the structures of academic advising and Frank's (1993) Integrated Model of Academic Advising Program Development as a conceptual framework for understanding how academic advising programs develop, the services provided, programming available, and how to enable the advisors to better support the student population. My findings include identifying: 1) several similarities between case sites' organizational structures of advising, 2) new student orientation and major exploration as main services offered at all sites, 3) a lack of formalized planning across all case sites, and 4) the prominence of advisor training with a desire to have more formal advisor recognition programs. Recommendations for future research, practice, and policy are provided along with a proposal for a new model for First-Year Engineering Advising Programs.
Doctor of Philosophy
Academic advising is a function within higher education that serves students by providing guidance to navigate the higher education system. Oueslati, Afifa. "L'activité de transposition professionnelle et didactique dans le travail de vulgarisatrices agricoles féminine en Tunisie." Thesis, Dijon, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011DIJOL030.

Abstract:
While re-examining the concept of didactic transposition (DT) in a professional environment, we studied the work of female agricultural advisors in Tunisia. Two arguments are simultaneously defended. A) The limits of the concept of “didactic transposition” in analysing a work environment and the interest of the concept of “activity”. B) Women who act as agricultural advisors are creative workers rather than simple executants. We combined sociological, psychological, historical and cultural approaches, academic and vocational didactics, directly observing women in charge of agricultural extension, analysing interviews and documents, following the process of DT from the beginning to the end. We thus discovered that the process of DT only partly accounts for the reality of these women’s work, the analysis of their activity supplementing it. Transposition is not only didactic; it is also vocational and pragmatic. The prescriptive framework constitutes a referent for transposition; it also influences and constrains the women who are involved in agricultural extension. Transposition is the result of their activity which is socially, culturally and emotionally situated. We are thus better able to understand the diversity of the activities of transposition once they have been situated in a context and recognized in their individuality

Abstract:
碩士
國立雲林科技大學
企業管理系
106
Financial technology has been booming in recent years, and Robo-Advisors play a very important role and are already the core of financial technology. In 2017, the "Securities Investment Consultancy Project provides key points for securities investment advisory services with automated tools" has been on the road. Robo-Advisors have regulations that can be followed. Although the regulations are open only in Europe, America and China, December 2017 The "Financial Technology Innovation and Experiment " completed the third reading, which made Taiwan the fifth country in the world with a Regulatory Sandbox system after the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. This study explores the extent to which the Taiwanese people consulted Robo-Advisors on the criteria of perceptive risk, and clustered their awareness, selected the lowest-perceived ethnic group as the target market for Taiwan’s robotic investment consultants, and targeted them. The market analyzes the characteristics and uses the significant demographic characteristics of the target market as a marketing strategy recommendation for Taiwanese robotic investment consultants. This study finds that the target market for Taiwan’s Robo-Advisors are the low-perceived risk group. There are several characteristics of the following demographic characteristics, mainly male in gender, and mainly in the education level, mainly in the institute. The majority of them are 51 years of age or older. In the monthly income, the monthly income is less than 20,000 yuan and more than 80,000 yuan. In the occupation category, the financial industry, the medical industry, the technology industry, and students are the mainstays.

Abstract:
This study explored the implementation of the recognition of prior learning (RPL) at Unisa by investigating the strengths and weaknesses of the RPL methodology, instruments and processes when taking students through the RPL process. The successes and challenges experienced by the RPL academic advisors and the academic assessors were determined and guidelines provided for the effective implementation of RPL at Unisa. The empirical research design was exploratory within a qualitative framework employing participant observation, focus group interviewing, individual interviewing and the distribution of questionnaires that consisted of open-ended questions. The research sample comprised 26 purposefully selected participants. With regard to the research findings, the challenges include a lack of administrative support, a lack of support from top management and the academic staff, and a lack of communication between management and the RPL department. The strength of the RPL department lay in its well-documented process manual.
Teacher Education
M. Ed. (Education Management)

Abstract:
As official botanist on James Cook's first circumnavigation, the longest-serving president of the Royal Society, advisor to King George III, the “father of Australia,” and the man who established Kew as the world's leading botanical garden, Sir Joseph Banks was integral to the English Enlightenment. Yet he has not received the recognition that his multifarious achievements deserve. This book reveals the true extent of Banks's contributions to science and Britain. From an early age Banks pursued his passion for natural history through study and extensive travel, most famously on the HMS Endeavour. He went on to become a pivotal figure in the advancement of British scientific, economic, and colonial interests. With his enquiring, enterprising mind and extensive network of correspondents, Banks's reputation and influence were global. Drawing widely on Banks's writings, the book sheds light on his profound impact on British science and empire in an age of rapid advancement.

Abstract:
Statehood traditionally has been determined by reference to the Montevideo Convention criteria. However, more recently, many commentators have come to see collective recognition through UN membership as the main avenue to statehood, a view supported by the extraordinary efforts taken by emerging states to gain UN membership. Only states can be UN members, and so UN membership is the ‘badge’ of statehood, or so the argument goes. In light of this shift to collective recognition through UN membership, the two ICJ advisory opinions gain particular importance. In responding to the political stalemate in the Security Council over admission of new UN members, the ICJ insisted on adhering to the legal rules of the UN Charter concerning admission, which is one of the main lessons of these advisory opinions. However, politics ultimately prevailed over the law when resolving the stalemate, which might be the more important lesson.

Regional anesthesia can deliver multiple benefits to patients undergoing surgery. However, administering even appropriate doses of local anesthetic agents for regional anesthesia can be life threatening, and the risks must be well understood. Local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) is a spectrum or sequence of symptoms and dysfunction that affects the nervous and cardiopulmonary systems. Management of LAST revolves around recognition, supportive care, and, specifically, administration of lipid emulsion. The American Society of Regional Anesthesia practice advisory for management of LAST is an excellent point-of-care reference for anesthesiologists practicing regional anesthesia.

This chapter first discusses the legal principles governing the recognition of fiduciary responsibility as applied to financial advisers. It then explains the law on transactions tainted by undue influence and unconscionable bargains. The equitable jurisdiction to grant relief in respect of transactions tainted by undue influence operates as a supplement to the common law of duress. While there is no general doctrine of a power to intervene in contracts and other transactions on the grounds of inequality of bargaining power at common law, there exists a jurisdiction in equity to relieve against unconscionable bargains.

Abstract:
Aviators engage in a variety of outdoor activities where their health status, the environment, and the degree of workload and fatigue affect their performance. An innovative tool has been developed, which supports the real-time health monitoring of pilots using new algorithms based on intelligent clustering techniques for the recognition of possible health problems in flight. The Smart Profiler and the Intelligent Advisor modules of this system exploit the use of knowledge based expert systems and intelligent classification techniques. Coupled with the Portal, which also exploits the use of intelligent clustering techniques, it estimates the pilot’s performance in unknown environments. The new system targets recognizing possible problems at the time of flying, but it can also be used for the monitoring of the pilot performance and progress throughout a period of time, as it stores information from different flying sessions. The system was applied in 20 private pilots during the flight of a Cessna 152 aerobatic. The device was reliable and user-friendly, enabling us to monitor real-time health status of aviators in order to detect possible problems caused by the actual environmental conditions to which individuals are exposed, thus contributing to their health and safety in their working environments. Despite the automation and increasing technological complexity of modern aircrafts, the human operator still plays an important role in controlling those demanding systems. Piloting an aircraft is a highly complex task that requires the pilot to be proficient in numerous skills (Wilson & Eggemeier, 1991) in a hostile environment of cabin pressure changes and circadian rhythm disturbances particularly in long duration flights. The resulting overload of the pilots mandates the need for real time health telemonitoring (Charles, Winget, Charles, De- Roshia, Markley, & Holley, 1984; Denison, Ledwith, & Poulton, 1966; U.S. National Research Council, 2002; Ustinaviciene, Obelenis, & Ereminas, 2004). Real time health telemonitoring would be crucial to early detect and prevent conditions affecting aviator’s vital signs and cognitive performance.

The COVID-19 virus can be spread through contact and contaminated surfaces; therefore, typical biometric systems like password and fingerprint are unsafe. Face recognition solutions are safer without any need of touching any device. During the COVID-19 situation as all of the people are advised to wear masks on their faces, the existing face detection technique is not able to identify the person with face occlusion. The fraudsters and thieves take advantage of this scenario and misuse the face mask, favoring them to be able to steal and commit various crimes without being identified. Face recognition methods fail to detect or recognize the face as half of the face is masked and the features are suppressed. Face recognition requires the visibility of major facial features for face normalization, orientation correction, and recognition. Thus, the chapter focuses on the facial recognition based on the feature points surrounding the eye region rather than taking the whole face as a parameter.

Abstract:
Products that are manufactured using near net-shape manufacturing processes must be designed with regard to the constraints of the manufacturing process. The purpose of this research project is to develop a knowledge based manufacturing advisor to assist designers of products for casting and injection moulding. The manufacturing advisor is tightly integrated with a CAD solid modeller, and uses a novel feature recognition approach to identify the manufacturing features of the part. A mid-surface abstraction from the part’s solid geometry is used as the basis for feature recognition, and it is argued that this is a better approach to feature recognition for this class of parts than a CAD solid model. Initial testing indicates that the feature recognition process is able to effectively recognise a range of features but that the quality of the feature recognition is dependent on the mid-surface representation that is generated.

Abstract:
Abstract The Digital Field initiative is transforming the daily operations on the oilfield and it is now part of PETRONAS corporate wide digital strategy. This transformation is done by onboarding multiple disciplines such as subsurface team, facilities, and operations, HSSE and Business Planning and is designed to replicates the performance of an oilfield in the computer, combining business process management and technical workflows. Digital Field has enabled the customer to execute their work collaboratively, by providing decision support system (technical workflows and business process management tools) subsequently improving their process efficiencies and optimizing their production. It is believed that by conducting a systematic review of the improvement and tracking the values that has been achieved, it will help to promote and accelerate digital adoption faster. The main objectives of the Automated Value Tracking are: To promote opportunity generation through collaborative environment. To track stages of every opportunity of the following categories of Production Optimization, Unplanned Deferment and Process Cycle Efficiencies. To quantify values associated with opportunities generated from automated workflows and current business process. To promote ownership of the actions associated with the assigned opportunity and to help to quantify on individual level contribution to the corporate goal in terms of production volume and time savings. To measures optimized number of opportunities generated against production volume associated with Production Optimization activity according to Field category and Quality of Opportunity Generated from Optimization Advisor. The process is summarized as follow: Opportunity generation: Automated opportunity generation generated through current Production Optimization Advisory framework. Integration with existing Petronas business process tools i.e. Daily Operational Tracking System, Alpha projects, Opportunity Management system, etc. Manual opportunity generation. Opportunity evaluation and analysis: Provide quantitatively confidence level of production incremental volume from automated Optimization Advisory through machine learning. Establish relationship between numbers of opportunity completed and categories versus production volume gain. Opportunity tracking and approval: Tracking the opportunity generation according to the process level. Escalating Opportunity and value recognition through business process approval. This workflow helps to improve to understand the current update of the different levels such as well, field, region and upstream with the help of integrating the value realization and allows "cards" to show information that can trigger opportunities to increase production, reduce time of decision and fast action.

Abstract:
Engineering design is becoming an integral part of any engineering program seeking international recognition and accreditation. Design practices are becoming a necessary experience to senior students nowadays in all engineering programs. The final year design project offered at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman gives senior students the chance to integrate their knowledge accumulated through already taken courses in the Mechanical Engineering Department to design particular products, experiments, and/or mechanical systems. In addition to gaining hands on experience of the design process, students were able to develop their communication skills and team work spirit. Throughout the whole year, students knowledge and expertise are enhanced through direct contact with their project advisor(s), project related memos, oral presentations, memos, posters, and written progress and final reports. The present paper describes the design process followed by a group of three senior students starting from understanding the problem and developing conceptual designs to the end product. CAD tools such as AutoCAD and ABAQUS were used to complete the design, build a prototype, and test it.

Abstract:
One of the required ABET outcomes is “a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in lifelong learning.” Although students must demonstrate this recognition and ability at graduation, data from alumni can strengthen a program’s assertion that its graduates actually engage in lifelong learning. Several strategies for demonstrating lifelong learning are presented and discussed. In addition, a case study from the Mechanical Engineering Department at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is presented. For the case study, several assessment instruments were used: an alumni survey, employer focus groups, an Advisory Board survey, and feedback from senior students. Each component will be discussed, results will be presented, and conclusions will be drawn. The alumni survey was made via the internet. The 760 respondents included graduates from the 1940s through the 2000s. Respondents were asked to indicate the number of additional courses or workshops that they had taken and whether or not they had received any additional degrees. Furthermore, respondents were asked to rate the importance of lifelong learning to their current job. In addition, they were asked to rate how well Rose had prepared them for lifelong learning. Employer perspective was gained through focus groups and the advisory board. Companies who were present at career fairs were asked to answer questions about Rose graduates in general. The ME Advisory Board contains members from institutions who are major employers of our graduates. Advisory board members gave feedback based on their knowledge of graduates’ performances. As in the alumni survey, both groups were asked to rate the importance of lifelong learning, along with how well Rose prepared them. Finally graduating seniors were asked to rate how important they felt lifelong learning would be in their careers. In addition, they were asked how well prepared they thought they were. All groups surveyed rated the ability to continue to learn and educate one’s self as being important, and all groups felt that RHIT graduates met the required standard.

Abstract:
Abstract Injection wells experience extremes of pressure and temperature as well as expansion and contraction during their normal operating cycles. This can cause numerous well integrity issues related to corrosion, leakage, degradation of barrier elements, operational practices that all put the health of the well at risk and require appropriate management. This paper will describe a case of a North Sea injection well that over time had developed sustained casing pressure (SCP) in the B-annulus. As a critical well in the development it was necessary to understand the origin and nature of the SCP as this would set further operational plans for the well helping to decide whether the well could continue to be operated safely, would require an intervention, or potentially will be abandoned. A leak investigation was needed to try to determine the source of the pressure, the type of fluid causing the pressure, the fluid path, and whether there was an injection out-of-zone as a result. To address all of the set objectives Distributed Fibre Optic (DFO) system was selected as a technology of choice. DFO provides an advantage over traditional leak detection methods through the ability to simultaneously monitor entire length of the well recording both acoustic and temperature profiles. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) was used to record acoustic signature of the well helping to determine the leak origin and likely pathway, while Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) was used to record well outflow profile and advise on possibility of out-of-zone injection. Use of pattern recognition techniques allowed to extract leak signature from background noise and other acoustic signals helping to pinpoint leak location. As a result of the application of DFO technology coupled with appropriate processing techniques way ahead for the well was identified providing an operator with a confident answer and saving on further intervention costs.

Abstract:
Well-being is a common human aspiration. Governments and states, too, seek to promote and ensure the well-being of their citizens; some even argue that this should be their overarching goal. But it is not enough for a country to flourish, and for its citizens to enjoy well-being, if the situation cannot be maintained over the long term. Well-being must be sustainable. The state needs criteria for assessing the well-being of its citizens, so that it can work to raise the well-being level. Joining many other governments around the world, the Israeli government adopted a comprehensive set of indices for measuring well-being in 2015. Since 2016, the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics has been publishing the assessment results on an annual basis. Having determined that the monitoring of well-being in Israel should employ complementary indices relating to its sustainability, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Bank of Israel, the Central Bureau of Statistics, and Yad Hanadiv asked the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities to establish an expert committee to draft recommendations on this issue. The Academy's assistance was sought in recognition of its statutory authority "to advise the government on activities relating to research and scientific planning of national significance." The Committee was appointed by the President of the Academy, Professor Nili Cohen, in March 2017; its members are social scientists spanning a variety of disciplines. This report presents the Committee's conclusions. Israel's ability to ensure the well-being of its citizens depends on the resources or capital stocks available to it, in particular its economic, natural, human, social, and cultural resources. At the heart of this report are a mapping of these resources, and recommendations for how to measure them.
