Abstract:
Aerial photography has been used as a mapping tool in the Antarctic Peninsula region sinre the late 1920s. Following pioneering work by Wilkins in 1928, Ellsworth in 1934 and the British Graham Land Expedition in 1934-37, the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition carried out extensive aerial photography during the period 1955-57. Since then, many other aerial surveys have been carried out, and the result is an archive of aerial photography that, for some localities, spans 40 years. The production of maps both from different generations of photographs and satellite images has revealed many changes in the extent of ice cover with time. For example, changes in ice shelves such as the Wordie Ice Shelf, Larsen Ice Shelf and Müller Ice Shelf, are well recorded, and the termini of some glaciers have retreated. However, the most pervasive change is the consistent decline in the extent of small bodies of snow and ice. This paper shows how perennial snow or ice cover has decreased in the northern Marguerite Bay area, at 68°S. The correlation of the change with elevation and with climate records from Adelaide and Rothera research stations in the Antarctic Peninsula region is examined.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Today when online satellite images are just a click away, access to geographic information showing the latest images of the globe has dramatically expanded, and historico-geographic research based on such information is flourishing. However, in the study of Chinese history, historical research employing GIS or similar technologies is still in its infancy, since “historical” geographic information with a high degree of precision are lacking. From within the ambit of Chinese geographic information, this report specifically highlights aerial surveys effected during the Republic of China era. To start, we review the history of domestic aerial surveys during R. O. C. period. Then, focusing on Nanjing as an example, we proceed to introduce maps that were actually created based on aerial surveys.</p><p>Chinese aerial surveys date back to around 1930. At the Nationalist Party’s General Assembly in 1929, partisans proposed for the need for aerial surveys. In 1930, the “Aerial Photography and Survey Research Team” was formed within the General Land Survey Department at General Staff Headquarters (National Army of the Republic of China). Consequently, foreign technicians were invited to provide relevant education/training. In June 1931, China’s pioneer initiative in aerial photography took place in Zhejiang province. The aim of aerial surveys in those early days was to create maps for military purposes. Between 1932 and 1939, topographic maps of fortifications located in areas such as the Jiangnan district were prepared. Further, starting from around the same period until the Sino-Japanese War, land registry maps based on aerial surveys were also produced. After the Sino-Japanese War ended, the above-mentioned directorate handed over responsibility for aerial surveys to the Naval General Staff. However, in 1949 the Chinese Communist Party confiscated the maps theretofore produced.</p><p>Although the aerial photographs and the geographic information produced therefrom during the R. O. C. era were seized by the People’s Republic of China, in actuality, some had previously been transferred to Taiwan. The topographic maps of the Nanjing metropolitan area (一萬分一南京城廂附近圖), based on aerial surveys and drawn in 1932, are currently archived at Academia Historica in Taipei. Comprising a total of 16 sheets, these maps were drawn on a scale of 1:10,000 by the General Land Survey Department.</p><p>Similarly, other maps (各省分幅地形圖) produced by the General Land Survey Department, comprising a total of 56 sheets and partly detailing Nanjing, are now in the possession of Academia Sinica in Taipei. There was no information about photographing or making in these maps. But almost the same maps were archived at Library of Congress in Washington D. C. According to those maps at LC, based on aerial photographs taken and surveys conducted in 1933, these topographic maps (1:10,000 scale) were completed in 1936.</p><p>The examples introduced above are topographic maps based on aerial photography. However, starting in 1937, land registry maps were also created. Detailing the outskirts of Nanjing (1:1,000 scale) and comprising a total of 121 sheets, they are now archived at Academia Historica. While the land registry maps were produced in 1937, supplementary surveys were effected following the Sino-Japanese War in 1947.</p><p>Since the geographic information based on aerial surveys during the R. O. C. era in China were precise, they can serve as a source of manifold information. This report only delved into information developed by the Government of the R. O. C., but it is becoming evident that U. S. Armed Forces and Japan also produced geographic information of their own based on aerial surveys. If the comprehensive panorama captured by all three protagonists can be illuminated, further advances in Chinese historico-geographic studies employing geographic information will be forthcoming.</p>

The threatened malleefowl (Leipoa ocellata) constructs a large (often >3 m) incubator mound (nest) that is considered a useful proxy for surveying its presence and abundance in the context of an environmental impact assessment. Here we report on the effectiveness and relative cost of using high-definition aerial photography to search in 3D for malleefowl mounds by comparing results to those of earlier ground-based searches. High-definition colour aerial photography was taken of an area of ~7014 ha and searched in 3D for malleefowl mounds. All 24 active (i.e. in use) malleefowl mounds known before the examination of aerial photography were detected using the new assessment technique. Of the 108 total mounds (active and inactive) known from earlier on-ground surveys, 94 (87%) were recorded using the new technique. Mounds not detected were all old and weathered, many barely above ground level and some with vegetation growing in the crater. Approximately 6.3% of the identifications considered ‘confident’ and ~35.0% considered ‘potential’ based on the aerial photography proved to be false positives. The cost of detecting malleefowl mounds using the interpretation of high-definition 3D colour aerial photography and then subsequently examining these areas on the ground is appreciably cheaper than on-ground grid searches.

Logistically demanding and expensive wildlife surveys should ideally yield defensible estimates. Here, we show how simulation can be used to evaluate alternative survey designs for estimating wildlife abundance. Specifically, we evaluate the potential of instrument-based aerial surveys (combining infrared imagery with high-resolution digital photography to detect and identify species) for estimating abundance of polar bears and seals in the Chukchi Sea. We investigate the consequences of different levels of survey effort, flight track allocation and model configuration on bias and precision of abundance estimators. For bearded seals (0.07 animals km −2 ) and ringed seals (1.29 animals km −2 ), we find that eight flights traversing ≈7840 km are sufficient to achieve target precision levels (coefficient of variation (CV)<20%) for a 2.94×10 5 km 2 study area. For polar bears (provisionally, 0.003 animals km −2 ), 12 flights traversing ≈11 760 km resulted in CVs ranging from 28 to 35%. Estimators were relatively unbiased with similar precision over different flight track allocation strategies and estimation models, although some combinations had superior performance. These findings suggest that instrument-based aerial surveys may provide a viable means for monitoring seal and polar bear populations on the surface of the sea ice over large Arctic regions. More broadly, our simulation-based approach to evaluating survey designs can serve as a template for biologists designing their own surveys.

Abstract Since the 1960s pup production of harp seals Pagophilus groenlandicus in the White Sea was estimated from aerial photographic surveys of visible adult females on the ice. Adult abundance estimations were underestimated because an unknown number of females were in the water during the survey. The absence of a reliable estimation of pup production constrained management initiatives. Aerial photographic surveys of whelping harp seals were conducted in the White Sea 10–12 March 2000. Using a systematic strip transect survey design approach, the number of pups present was estimated as 294 914 with a standard error (s.e.) of 36 168. When pups caught by Russian sealers in the White Sea before the aerial surveys (30 729 pups) were included the total estimated number of pups was 325 643 (s.e. 36 168), whereas the number of adult harp seals was 215 943 (s.e. 22 630). The pup estimate was not corrected for pups born after the survey, but this was not considered to be significant. The new estimation of pup production is higher than thought earlier.

Linear engineering facilities, such as gas transportation systems, extend from 30 to 500 metres in width and several hundred kilometres in length. Such routes pass through areas characterized by sufficiently diverse engineering, geological, geocryological and seismotectonic conditions. The safe and reliable functioning of gas transportation systems is ensured by their regular monitoring to prevent the development of hazardous exogenous geological processes. In particular, when monitoring ice formation, the greatest efficiency can be achieved by using unmanned aerial vehicles for low-altitude aerial surveys. In this research, remote sensing methods based on unmanned technologies were applied to assess the aufeis hazard in a section of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline in South Yakutia. The authors’ successful experience of using unmanned systems during an aeromagnetic exploration of iron ore deposits in South Yakutia was also considered. A series of studies, including georadar and electrical exploration profiling, as well as thermal imaging and high-resolution aerial photography by an aerial complex, was conducted to assess the dynamics of ice development over time in the area under study and to establish the signs of a developing hazardous process.

Polar bears are of international conservation concern due to climate change but are difficult to study because of low densities and an expansive, circumpolar distribution. In a collaborative U.S.-Russian effort in spring of 2016, we used aerial surveys to detect and estimate the abundance of polar bears on sea ice in the Chukchi Sea. Our surveys used a combination of thermal imagery, digital photography, and human observations. Using spatio-temporal statistical models that related bear and track densities to physiographic and biological covariates (e.g., sea ice extent, resource selection functions derived from satellite tags), we predicted abundance and spatial distribution throughout our study area. Estimates of 2016 abundance (N ^ *) ranged from 3,435 (95% CI: 2,300-5,131) to 5,444 (95% CI: 3,636-8,152) depending on the proportion of bears assumed to be missed on the transect line during Russian surveys (g(0)). Our point estimates are larger than, but of similar magnitude to, a recent estimate for the period 2008-2016 (N ^ * = 2 , 937; 95% CI 1,522-5,944) derived from an integrated population model applied to a slightly smaller area. Although a number of factors (e.g., equipment issues, differing platforms, low sample sizes, size of the study area relative to sampling effort) required us to make a number of assumptions to generate estimates, it establishes a useful lower bound for abundance, and suggests high spring polar bear densities on sea ice in Russian waters south of Wrangell Island. With future improvements, we suggest that springtime aerial surveys may represent a plausible avenue for studying abundance and distribution of polar bears and their prey over large, remote areas.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Rock glaciers are creep phenomena of mountain permafrost. Typically, these landforms look like lava flows from a bird’s eye view. Active rock glaciers move downslope with flow velocities in the range of few centimeters to several meters per year. Thus, large masses of rock and ice can be gradually transported down-valley. In this paper we present a comparative study analyzing surface change for Tschadinhorn rock glacier, a relatively fast moving rock glacier located in the Hohe Tauern Range of the Austrian Alps. Aerial photographs (1954&amp;ndash;2017) of both metric (conventional) and non-metric (UAV-based) aerial surveys were compared to derive multi-annual to annual flow vector fields and surface height change. For each time interval given we computed a single representative value for flow velocity and, if applicable, also for area-wide surface height change, i.e. volume change. The velocity graph obtained represents the temporal evolution of the kinematics of the rock glacier with good discrimination. Volume change was difficult to quantify since temporal changes were rather small and close to insignificance. The precision and accuracy of the results obtained were numerically quantified. Our study showed that for the Tschadinhorn rock glacier UAV-based aerial surveys can substitute conventional aerial surveys as carried out by national mapping agencies, such as the Austrian Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV). Thus, UAV-based aerial surveys can help to bridge the data gap between regular aerial surveys. The high accuracy of the UAV-derived results would even allow intra-annual change detection of flow velocity.</p>

We conducted surveys in 1983 and 1984 of submersed macrophyte communities off six islands in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers using low altitude aerial photography and ground-truth collections. Sample collections in 1984 followed one of the coldest winters on record, during which ice up to 4 m thick developed in areas that were normally ice-free. Growth of many of the 20 taxa collected was delayed in the spring of 1984, as compared with the spring of 1983. By September 1984, however, total abundance of all taxa was equal to or greater than that in 1983. The location, size, and shape of plant beds in September 1984 were similar to those in 1983. We concluded that the unusual ice jam in early spring of 1984 had little, if any, permanent effect on submersed macrophytes in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers.

Interpretation of large-scale color infrared and color aerial photography can be a labor and cost-effective means for inventorying and monitoring rangelands while maintaining accuracy. Ground measurements of vegetation cover at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument were taken in 1975 and 1984. Large-scale (1:1200) color and color infrared aerial photo estimates were compared to these ground measurements through regression and correlation to check photo accuracy. Relationships between photo estimates and ground measurements of total vegetation and shrub cover were strong when using either film type. Color infrared photo estimates corresponded better with ground measurements for both tree cover and cactus cover than color photo estimates. Large-scale aerial photography is also useful for determining some of the causes of vegetation change. Evidence gathered from both sets of photos suggested that vegetation change at OPCNM was largely the result of domestic livestock removal and short-term climatic fluctuations.

Abstract:
Bayesian estimates of gross cubic- foot volume per acre were computed for four stand types (plantation pine, natural pine. hardwood. and mixed wood stands) using aerial photo volume tables as the prior information source. Aerial photographs provided a reliable source of information even though most photographs were nearly five years old. For a given level of precision within a particular stand, Bayesian methods reduced the required field sample size up to 50% using all or half of the prior information available. Those priors which utilized a regression or a regression/topographic correction in the estimation of photo heights required less field information for the given precision level than those priors which used uncorrected or topographic corrected photo heights. In order to obtain meaningful gains in sample size reduction corrections to the estimated photo heights should be made. Although the uncorrected prior produced generally less biased estimates. the reduction in sample size was not as large as that observed using other prior types. Greater gains were attributed to the better accuracy of the prior distribution. Although Bayesian methods are biased, it appeared that these methods tempered severely biased prior distributions. In the hardwood stand for example, the average bias present in the photo volume data amounted to -140%. After combining the prior with the field sample, the greatest average bias was -50%. Bayesian methods performed better than the traditional estimation methods in terms of precision. In a one to one comparison. the Bayes standard error was consistently less than its non-Bayes counterpart. The one exception to this trend was the regression prior from the hardwood stand. The poor performance of the prior was due to the weak height regression correction equation. Modal priors utilized were not subject to the extreme input values for prior distribution development as their conservative empirical prior counterparts were. Less overall variation was observed 1n the estimated values. Under the conditions for mode selection set forth in this project, modal priors provided another good source of prior information.

Atualmente, as questões conservacionistas têm sido discutidas com grande ênfase pela sociedade em geral, principalmente sobre a paisagem amazônica. Dentro desse contexto está a bacia hidrográfica do rio Mojuí, localizada nos municípios de Santarém e Belterra, no estado do Pará. Esta vem sofrendo constantes explorações dos seus recursos naturais, principalmente devido à conversão de áreas com florestas em áreas agrícolas, principalmente para cultivo da soja. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar, mapear e quantificar, em escala de semi detalhe, as áreas das classes de cobertura vegetal e uso da terr0a no período de 11 anos, com o uso de imagens LANDSAT, órbita/ pontos 227/62, bandas TM 3, 4 e 5, referentes aos anos de 1999, 2005 e 2010, a dinâmica da paisagem na região. A seleção das imagens foi determinada considerando-se o período climático semelhante, com as mesmas circunstâncias de iluminação e cobertura de nuvens. Os limites da bacia foram estabelecidos pelos divisores topográficos que formam a área que drena para um ponto específico. Baseando-se nos dados obtidos no levantamento de campo e com o suporte da fotointerpretação das cenas dos sensores nos anos estabelecidos pela pesquisa, foi definida uma legenda temática para classificação da vegetação e uso do solo na bacia, sendo identificadas sete formas de coberturas vegetais e uso do solo na área de abrangência da bacia. Currently, conservation issues have been discussed with great emphasis by society in general, especially on the Amazon landscape. Within this context is Mojuí River watershed, located in the cities of Santarém and Belterra, in the state of Pará This comes under constant exploration of natural resources, mainly due to conversion of forest areas into agricultural areas, mainly for soybeans cultivation. The aim of this study was to characterize and quantify mapping , semi -scale detail , the areas of vegetation cover classes and land use in the period of 11 years as use of LANDSAT , orbit / points 227/62 , TM bands 3 , 4:05 , for the years 1999 , 2005 and 4 2010 , the landscape dynamics in the region . The selection of images was determined considering the similar climatic period, with the same lighting conditions and cloud cover. The boundaries of the basin were established by dividers that form the topographic area that drains to a specific point. Based on the data obtained in the field survey and with the support of photointerpretation the scenes of the sensors in the years established by research, has defined a thematic caption for vegetation classification and land use in the basin, identified seven forms of vegetation and land use in the catchment area of the basin. We defined the following classes of land cover: Rain Forest , Secondary Succession , Alluvial Rain Forest , Grassland , Degraded Grassland , Agriculture and Water Bodies . Esta vem sofrendo constantes explorações dos seus recursos naturais, principalmente devido à conversão de áreas com florestas em áreas agrícolas, principalmente para cultivo da soja. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar, mapear e quantificar, em escala de semi detalhe, as áreas das classes de cobertura vegetal e uso da terr0a no período de 11 anos, com o uso de imagens LANDSAT, órbita/ pontos 227/62, bandas TM 3, 4 e 5, referentes aos anos de 1999, 2005 e 2010, a dinâmica da paisagem na região. A seleção das imagens foi determinada considerando-se o período climático semelhante, com as mesmas circunstâncias de iluminação e cobertura de nuvens. Abstract: Currently, conservation issues have been discussed with great emphasis by society in general, especially on the Amazon landscape. Within this context is Mojuí River watershed, located in the cities of Santarém and Belterra, in the state of Pará This comes under constant exploration of natural resources, mainly due to conversion of forest areas into agricultural areas, mainly for soybeans cultivation. The aim of this study was to characterize and quantify mapping , semi -scale detail , the areas of vegetation cover classes and land use in the period of 11 years as use of LANDSAT , orbit / points 227/62 , TM bands 3 , 4:05 , for the years 1999 , 2005 and 4 2010 , the landscape dynamics in the region . The selection of images was determined considering the similar climatic period, with the same lighting conditions and cloud cover. The boundaries of the basin were established by dividers that form the topographic area that drains to a specific point. Based on the data obtained in the field survey and with the support of photointerpretation the scenes of the sensors in the years established by research, has defined a thematic caption for vegetation classification and land use in the basin, identified seven forms of vegetation and land use in the catchment area of the basin. For ecologists and managers of seagrass systems, the spatial context provided by remote sensing has proven to be an important complement to in situ assessments and measurements. The spatial extent of seagrass beds has been mapped most commonly with conventional aerial photography. Additional remote mapping and monitoring tools applied to seagrass studies include optical satellite sensors, airborne multispectral scanners, underwater video cameras, and towed sonar systems. An additional tool that shows much promise is airborne, waveform-resolving lidar (light detection and ranging). Now used routinely for high-resolution bathymetric and topographic surveys, lidar systems operate by emitting a laser pulse, then measuring its two-way travel time from the plane to reflecting surface(s) below, then back to the detector co-located with the laser transmitter. Using a novel, waveformresolving lidar system developed at NASA — the Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar (EAARL) — we are investigating the possibility of using the additional information contained in the returned laser pulse (waveform) for the purposes of benthic habitat mapping. Preliminary analyses indicate that seagrass beds can potentially be delineated on the basis of apparent bathymetry, returned waveform shape and amplitude, and (horizontal) spatial texture. A complete set of georectified digital camera imagery is also collected during each EAARL overflight and can aid in mapping efforts. Illustrative examples are shown from seagrass beds in the turbid waters of Tampa Bay and the relatively clear waters of the Florida Keys.

Abstract:
The object of research is the territory of the city of Lviv (Ukraine). Lviv (geographical coordinates: 49N50, 24E00) is the largest city in Western Ukraine, with a population of over 720,000 inhabitants. The city is located in the western part of the Volyn-Podilska Upland, on the line of the Main European Ridge of the Baltic and Black Sea basins. Subject of research is relief parameters (maximum, average and minimum heights, vertical dismemberment and steepness of the surface) and land use characteristics (building intensity, phytocenotic cover). The purpose of research is to study the features of the territory of Lviv from the standpoint of influence on the hydrological regime and erosion processes. Methodology. Peculiarities of the territory of Lviv were studied by processing topographic maps using aerial photography materials and route surveys. Morphometric analysis of the relief was performed on topographic maps of scale 1: 10000 by dividing the map into elementary squares with an area of 0.25 km2. The research covers an area of 100.25 km2 (401 elementary squares). Within the elementary squares, the maximum, average and minimum heights of the territory, the depth of local erosion bases, the average surface steepness, the intensity and nature of construction, and the features of vegetation were determined. Results. The territory of Lviv is characterized by a variety of relief conditions and related nature of surface use. On the basis of morphometric maps of maximum and minimum heights, vertical dismemberment and steepness of the surface, we can distinguish the flat peripheral part of the city and the middle band of elevations. The asymmetry of the territory of Lviv in relation to the watershed causes various potential dangers of erosion processes and related unproductive moisture losses. The intensity of construction increases from the periphery to the center, with the exception of modern multi-storey buildings of the Sykhiv massif and industrial areas in the western part of the city. Low specific weight of waterproof coatings is characterized by the eastern and northern parts of the city with a complex relief. The largest amount of greenery is concentrated in the eastern part of the city (Vysokyi Zamok Park, Shevchenkivskyi grove, Pohulyanka Forest Park, Lychakiv), where surfaces with maximum relative heights predominate. The great variety of the underlying surface on the territory of Lviv causes different conditions for the formation of surface runoff and associated unproductive moisture consumption. The high potential danger of erosion processes is primarily noted by the structural-denudation level of Roztochia, which is characterized by the highest values of surface steepness. Complex relief conditions, intensive anthropogenic impact determine the need for anti-erosion organization of the city and measures aimed at optimizing hydrological processes. Scientific novelty. One of the criteria that characterizes the degree of landscape transformation within the city is the intensity of construction, which is determined by the proportion of watertight areas in the overall balance of the territory. Peculiarities of spatial arrangement of elementary plots with different intensity of construction in combination with relief parameters and land use scheme are determined. Practical significance. Knowing the parameters of the terrain and the peculiarities of land use, it is possible to determine the potential intensity of erosion processes in the territory of Lviv, to assess the level of anthropogenic changes in the hydrological regime.

Recently Nalcor announced the discovery of three newly defined hydrocarbon basins located primarily in deep water in the Labrador Sea, off the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The basins are Henley, Chidley and Holton Basins and expanded the extent of the Hawke Basin. On behalf of Nalcor Energy, C-CORE recently completed the Offshore Newfoundland and Labrador Metocean Study which summarizes environmental conditions of these regions to support offshore petroleum exploration and development in the Labrador Sea and to outline the resource potential to the global oil and gas industry. Defining iceberg densities was one of the required tasks for the study. Among various environmental conditions, iceberg density is one of the most challenging parameter to define accurately both spatially and temporally. Aerial iceberg reconnaissance flight surveys provided by IIP (International Ice Patrol) and CIS (Canadian Ice Service) were studied, classified and analyzed to compute iceberg density (number of icebergs per square km). Only open water icebergs were considered for analysis because of the difficulty associated with reliably identifying icebergs in pack ice, which may lead to an underestimation of iceberg occurrence. Therefore, aerial reconnaissance data were compared with CIS pack ice charts to eliminate any possibility of iceberg sightings in pack ice being included in the analysis. Satellite radar data acquired using Envisat wide swath mode (WSM) imagery was also used for iceberg detections in order to provide full coverage of the study area. Again, sea ice was outlined in the imagery to ensure no targets in sea ice were counted. The WSM imagery provided a 400 km wide swath with an approximate radar resolution of 150 m, meaning smaller targets were not detected. In order to combine satellite radar data with aerial reconnaissance surveys a non-detection factor was calculated using a comparison of concurrent Envisat and aerial coverage to compensate for missed targets due to the coarser radar resolution. The resulting map of open water iceberg densities will provide a baseline for the region which shall be further refined through an on-going program using high-resolution Sentinel satellite data. Detailed descriptions of the analysis, procedures and results are presented in this paper. Areal density results of the newly defined basins are compared to the other frontier regions, where iceberg risks are higher.

Abstract:
This is a short descriptive paper. It is meant to familiarize the reader with some of the ice environment in the Caspian Sea and it presents data not fully used in western countries. The paper describes results of ice studies of the Northern part of the Caspian Sea based on the processing of space survey data. It is shown that medium-scale space surveys may be used to study icing events, but also river networks, and irrigated and unirrigated lands of the Northern Caspian Sea region. These studies are necessary for the optimal design of flood defences, offshore platforms and for other engineering purposes. Data from Meteor satellites is used to study the ice regime. The advantages of using meteo-satellite data to study the dynamics of ice cover and to identify various types of ice, are shown in comparison with aerial surveys.

Abstract This Paper presents a case study of the Jardim Novo Maracanã stream situated in Campinas, São Paulo, in which recent streambed modifications were characterized, aiming to define the rates and the potential erosions along the channel alignment of which have Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline crossing. Its presents the erosion process analysis and mitigation concepts aimed at the pipeline and fiber optic cables facilities integrity, as well as to indicate the design issues, considering the streambed deepening in this watershed. For this, satellite images and aerial photographs were collected in different periods, soil and subsoil surveys were performed, information on rainfall and watershed characteristics was analyzed, as well as hydrological and hydrotechnical studies were developed. These studies included geotechnical channel and banks analyzes, the spatial and temporal trends of the fluvial geomorphology evolution and the infrastructures safety conditions analysis. It was concluded that a new channel erosion process occurred after the streambed was filled by recent sediments. This process is associated with an increase floods magnitude, the slopes occupation intensification with the county urbanization and the streambed conditions changes, from an alignment sinuous to rectilinear and from a shallow to deeper channel. Once initiated, the channel erosion process maintained its retroerosion, i.e. its “headcutting” trend, deepening its equilibrium profile to its stratigraphic base level, located about 5.0 m below the 2014 stream bottom, in the pipeline cross section. Alternative concepts for the infrastructure integrity rehabilitation in these new morphological-fluvial conditions were also developed and dimensioned. Among these, the rectangular culverts alternative was adopted. They support a landfill at the crossing with the buried pipe and have to 100-year return period peak flows capacity.

Abstract Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have a great potential for geological exploration optimization at all stages. This study considers UAV implementation at different exploration stage. Integrated approach using unmanned aerial systems shows great effectiveness based on the completed surveys. Low-depth electrical exploration using the shallow electrical exploration method is one of the possible UAVs technologies with great potential. In this study there are several cases describing main field data acquisition, models and cross-sections processing. Unmanned aerial systems are applicable at all stages of the oil and gas value chain and are already an integral part of oil&gas production process. Now there are more than 70 unmanned aerial systems application scenarios. The main advantages of drones are that the use of this operational data collection tool allows: – to reduce the duration of collecting geospatial data by 70%, and the cost by 3 times; – make the best decisions quickly; – to realize additional potential for increasing efficiency (application at all stages of the production chain) – increase the production processes safety level The most promising and actively developing areas of technology application are: Geophysical surveys at different stages of geological exploration. Drones have great potential for application in non-seismic exploration methods in the early stages of geological exploration. In addition, UAV surveys are suitable for planning geological exploration and working out the conceptual arrangement of the terrain. The presence of an accurate digital elevation model at the start of work of the project team makes it possible to remove a number of uncertainties and questions about conducting field work on seismic exploration, the placement of infrastructure and corridor communications. Objective control of the capital construction progress. Another important area of drones application is aerial photography at all stages of capital construction. With the help of UAVs, it is possible to control such parameters as the status and quality of construction and installation works, equipment of contractors, compliance with safety and environmental standards, and others. To do this, the unmanned vehicle flies around the object with a given regularity, filming it from different angles. After aerial photography, special software stitches the results into photogrammetric products (digital terrain model, orthophotomaps, 3D models) with an accuracy of 4–6 centimeters. On the constructed models, you can calculate the dynamics by one or another parameter. Operational fieldwork and intrastructure monitoring. At the same time, one of the key goals of technology application is the creation of a network of autonomous stations with drones at all assets for remote control of the company's production processes. The first step in this direction was the joint pilot testing of an automated take-off and landing station with an unmanned aerial vehicle of a multi-rotor type. The use of the station will reduce the time and cost of collecting data on capital construction and infrastructure. Project teams will be able to react faster to changes. An automated take-off and landing station allows the use of unmanned aerial vehicles without human intervention. The drone can independently take off, perform the necessary operations, land and recharge. Thus, flight operations and data collection can be performed remotely without the constant presence of a specialist on site.

Pipeline crossings of streams, whether large or small, must consider the ability of the stream channel to scour its bed and erode its banks. Case studies are presented to illustrate the kinds of dynamic environments which must be considered in designing pipeline stream crossings. These characteristics may be determined through the use of comparative historical aerial photography and site photographs and surveys. The case studies presented as examples in this paper include gullies, bedrock-lined channels, entrenched meandering streams, multi-channel wandering streams, degrading channels, alluvial fans, and major channels affected by regulation and man-made structures. Natural hazards such as debris jams and beaver dams are also discussed. For each case study, the characteristics of the channels are described, the design approach discussed and site-specific constraints presented which affected the final design.

Abstract:
The UK Low Level Waste Repository Ltd submitted an Environmental Safety Case for the disposal of low-level waste to our regulator, the Environment Agency, on the 1st of May 2011. This includes assessments of the long-term radiological safety of past and future disposals. A particular feature of the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) is that, because of its proximity to the coast, the site is vulnerable to coastal erosion. Our present understanding is that the site will be eroded on a timescale of a few hundred to a few thousand years, with consequent disruption of the repository, and dispersal of the wastes. We have undertaken a programme of scientific research and monitoring to characterise the evolution and function of the current coastal system that provides a basis for forecasting its future evolution. This has included modelling of contemporary hydrodynamics, geomorphological mapping, repeat LiDAR and aerial photographic surveys to detect patterns and rates of change, coastal inspections and reconstructions of post-glacial (i.e. last 15,000 years) sea levels and sediment budgets. Estimates of future sea-level rise have been derived from international sources and consideration given to the impact of such on the local coastline. Two alternative models of coastal recession have then been applied, one empirical and one physical-process based, taking account of the composition of Quaternary-age sediments between the coast and the site and uncertainties in future local sea level change. Comparison of the ranges of calculated times to site contact with sea-level rise indicate that the repository is most likely to be disrupted by undercutting of the engineered vaults and of the trenches. A novel and flexible radiological assessment model has been developed to analyse the impacts of the erosion of the repository and subsequent dispersal of wastes. The model represents the spatial layout of the site and distribution of radionuclides within the repository and is able to take account of a range of uncertainties. These include uncertainties related to the rate of erosion through the facility, amounts of co-erosion of geological and cap materials, alternative assumptions for residence of waste materials on the beach, alternative waste form associations, the wider dispersion of the eroded materials and marine sorption/desorption processes. Results indicate assessed annual doses and risks that are consistent with regulatory guidance levels.

Abstract:
12 January 2018 The objectives of the Year 1 Pilot Study were to (i) develop a methodology for determining tornado occurrence in Northern Ontario, and (ii) obtain research quality data for at least one event. Because of the isolation of many regions, the approach assumed the use of radar data analysis combined with aerial surveys. These objectives were achieved. Aerial surveys were conducted for a total of seven events in Ontario and southern Quebec and 15 confirmed or probable tornadoes identified. Archival geo-tagged imagery was obtained for six of these events. Ten confirmed or probable tornadoes were identified in Ontario, five of which were not in the OSPC database. In addition, 5 tornadoes were confirmed in Quebec. For the 2017 season, the OSPC had a list of 10 verified tornadoes, as of December 21, 2017. The pilot project raises this number to 15. In total, 4 EF2 tornadoes and 1 EF3 tornado were identified via aerial photography. The remainder were EF1 or EF0. UPDATE – 23 April 2018 Based on the analysis of newly available Planet.com high-resolution satellite imagery and related tools, several events were reassessed and a number of additional tornadoes were discovered. Overall, an additional three tornadoes were added to 2017 count. The updated events are listed in a revised 2017 summary table appended at the end of this document.
