Full textKaunas S. Darius and S. Girėnas airfield was the first Lithuanian aviation place and one of the oldest airfields in Europe. Lithuanian aviation development started in 1915 when Kaunas airfield was established. Kaunas S. Darius and S. Girėnas airfield flourished during the period of First Republic of Lithuania. The airfield began to expand: new buildings, aviation facilities appeared. Military aviation school and military aviation workshop were also established. In addition, at the same time the rudiments of civil aviation appeared in Kaunas airfield. They led to the establishment of the Lithuanian Aero Club (LAC). LAC organized plenty of festivals which brought aviation to public’s attention. Until the establishment of LAC, Lithuanian society has had a little interest in aviation and had no access to it. Lithuanian Aero Club (founded in 1927) took the action in Lithuanian society; it promoted civil and sport aviation. LAC organized aviation festivals in various Lithuanian cities and towns, promoted aviation in press, encouraged people to participate in a lottery (organized by LAC) and become members of the club. LAC activities were carried out not only in Lithuania but also abroad. Aviation festivals organized by Lithuanian Aero Club became an object of Lithuanian public attention and discussion. In the press constantly appeared articles where the main attention was given to: aviation celebrations, participants of the festivals, pilots, fluttering of acrobatic planes... [to full text]

Full textThe Portuguese Air Force was born after a very complex political and military process, with many supporters and many antagonists. Its creation was the result of the evolution of aviation in Portugal, the accumulated experiences of the intrepid Portuguese airmen during the air raids of the 20s and 30s of last century, the operational knowledge and the recognition of the importance of air power, particularly after World War II. Throughout this process, starting at the end of 1909, the evolution of aviation in Portugal was accompanied by the Aero Club of Portugal. This institution brought together enthusiasts of "Cause of the Air", civilians and military men. It resulted in an entity with vast technical knowledge of Aeronautics, in which several "Men" stood out to drive, who as a pressure group had the ability to foster, the creation of third branch, of the Portuguese Armed Forces in 1952, among witch Colonel Humberto Delgado. In a concerted manner, "Revista do Ar" had a leading role in spreading the ideals of the "Cause of the Air".

This thesis deals with the two novelistic works of Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone and Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club. Both of the two authors aim at representing the neglected Chinese American history. In this thesis, I appropriate Kristeva’s “abject” and Freud’s “uncanny” to discuss and illuminate the issue of Chinese American identity in the American society. My argument is that in the formation of American citizenship, Chinese American community has always been positioned as the silenced, and by way of a “narrative of absence,” Tan and Ng are able to present the neglected history of Chinese America to the readers. Embedded in the seemingly personal and familial life sequences are the life struggles and sufferings of the Chinese American community. As Ping-chia Feng argues, a “narrative of absence” defamiliarizes and denaturalizes the reading of texts and thus propels the readers to see clearly those which are seemingly absent yet actually in existence. As the readers try to fill in the absence in the texts, they would discover this seeming absent Chinese American history.

4-H Club grew up in the twentieth-century U.S. Since the late 19th century, in order to solve many rural problems, some people have created a kind of agricultural extension movement for the youth in rural areas. When the federal government established Cooperative Agricultural Extension Services System, 4-H Club has also been included, developing rapidly into well-known characteristics of today. At the end of World War II, it was spread along with the U.S. aid to many countries. Meanwhile, the 4-H youth has participated in International Farm Youth Exchange, and also began to expand the regional exchange. This study discusses the origin of the 4-H Club and how it outputted organization and promoted international rural exchange. First, this study overviews the historical development of the 4-H in U.S. Secondly, it examines around the post-war world situation, and investigate why this local organization can transplant to other countries after World War II. Finally, the gist of the study is that it researches the Taiwan’s introduction of U.S. 4-H Club, and Youth Exchange instances between Taiwan and America. Accordingly, this study offers precious perspectives from these historical experiences to study a different kind of social images and research vision.
