Abstract:
As one of the sustainable forms of energy production, wind farms are becoming increasingly prevalent, changing the global landscapes and seascapes. They are often met with resistance, primarily because of their presumed ‘eyesore’ effect. This chapter reviews several arguments based upon imagination and comparison to art that are intended to mitigate the negative aesthetic impact of wind farms. It concludes that the most promising aesthetic argument in support of wind farms must be a part of a larger aesthetics of sustainability informed by life values, sometimes referred to as the ‘thick’ sens

Abstract:
Aesthetics and Video Gamesintroduces current issues and ideas in philosophical aesthetics that help us to better understand why video games are different from cinema, animation and other types of fiction. Addressing two foundational issues, the notion of the aesthetic and the value of play, it asks what the aesthetic is and investigates how value arises from different forms of play. Introducing the history and theory surrounding these questions, this book: - Offers an account of the value of games that places gameplay and interactivity at its core - Acknowledges the importance of both ethical

The main argument for the network theory of aesthetic value is that it better explains the facts about aesthetic activity than aesthetic hedonism. According to the network theory, an aesthetic value figures in a fact that lends weight to the proposition that it would be an aesthetic achievement for an agent to act in the context of an aesthetic practice. Each aesthetic practice has its own aesthetic profile, in which determinate aesthetic values are distinctively realized, and each has core aesthetic norms centred on its distinctive aesthetic profile. An account is given of the valence of aest

The main argument for the network theory of aesthetic value is that it better explains the facts about aesthetic activity than does its rival, aesthetic hedonism. The network theory states what makes it the case that an aesthetic value is reason-giving: it figures in a fact that lends weight to the proposition that it would be an aesthetic achievement for an agent to act. An aesthetic achievement is an act that succeeds as a result of the exercise of an aesthetic competence seated in the agent. Core aesthetic competence is competence in aesthetic evaluation. Aesthetic meta-competence is compet

According to a core tenet of contemporary philosophy, aesthetic properties are primarily represented in experiences. Obviously, however, the tenet does not apply in any straightforward manner to many items that nevertheless seem to have aesthetic properties. Examples include literary works, mathematical objects, scientific ideas, and works of conceptual art. Aesthetic properties need not be represented in perceptual experiences, but what is an experience if not a perceptual state? Questions about artistic value are not nicely uniform or all raised at the same level of inquiry. In this article they are divided up into three groups of issues: meta-aesthetic, ontological, and normative. The first of these concern the nature of a judgement of artistic value. The second concerns the nature of such value itself. The last concerns the core question of what is artistically valuable about art, and how one brings the various valuable features of a work to bear in arriving at an evaluation of the work. Though these are different questions, there are not sharp boundaries between th

This book argues that the neglect of aesthetics in most contemporary theories of biopolitics has resulted in an overly restricted conception of life. The book insists we need a more flexible notion of life: one attuned to the interplay and conflict between its many dimensions and forms. The book develops such a notion through the meticulous study of works by Kant, Goethe, Kleist, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Benn, Musil, and others. It shows that the modern conception of “life” as a generative, organizing force internal to living beings emerged in the last decades of the eighteenth century in biol

Abstract There are many aesthetic cultures, and groups with different aesthetic cultures can come in contact with one another, sometimes resulting in conflict. An aesthetic injustice is a failure of policies in large-scale social arrangements to manage the contact well and avoid conflict. This book articulates and defends the cosmopolitan theory of aesthetic injustice: a large-scale social arrangement is aesthetically unjust when and only when it harms people in their capacities as aesthetic agents, thereby subverting interests in the value diversity and social autonomy of aesthetic cultures.

Abstract:
This chapter describes a cognitive-behavioral model of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), focusing on a core concept of “processing of the self as an aesthetic object.” This concept refers to the experience of being intensely self-focused on a distorted and negative “felt sense” of how one appears to others, and of anticipating or experiencing negative evaluation and rejection because of how one looks. The model proposes that this “felt sense” is informed by intrusive imagery derived from aversive memories, which many individuals with BDD experience. Appearance may become an “idealized value” (i.
