Abstract:
Image aesthetic evaluation refers to the subjective aesthetic evaluation of images. Computational aesthetics has been widely concerned due to the limitations of subjective evaluation. Aiming at the problem that the existing evaluation methods of image aesthetic quality only extract the low-level features of images and they have a low correlation with human subjective perception, this paper proposes an aesthetic evaluation model based on latent semantic features. The aesthetic features of images are extracted by superpixel segmentation that is based on weighted density POI (Point of Interest), which includes semantic features, texture features, and color features. These features are mapped to feature words by LLC (Locality-constrained Linear Coding) and, furthermore, latent semantic features are extracted using the LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation). Finally, the SVM classifier is used to establish the classification prediction model of image aesthetics. The experimental results on the AVA dataset show that the feature coding based on latent semantics proposed in this paper improves the adaptability of the image aesthetic prediction model, and the correlation with human subjective perception reaches 83.75%.

Abstract:
The current research on human-machine interaction interface layout focused on ergonomic analysis, while the research on aesthetics and aesthetic degree calculation of interface layout was insufficient. In order to objectively evaluate the aesthetic degree of interface layout, this paper put forward an aesthetic degree evaluation method of interface design based on Kansei engineering. Firstly, the perceptual image structure of interface aesthetic degree was analyzed from the perspective of aesthetic cognition. Six aesthetic image factors affecting interface aesthetic degree, including proportion, conciseness, order, rhythm, density, and equilibrium, were extracted by factor analysis method, and the variance contribution rate of each factor was taken as the weight. Secondly, according to the six aesthetic degree indexes, the calculation system of interface aesthetic degree was constructed, and the aesthetic degree value of aesthetic image factor was calculated by the corresponding aesthetic degree evaluation mathematical formula. Then, Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method was used to analyze the order of aesthetic degree superiority of design schemes, and the comprehensive aesthetic degree evaluation was carried out. Finally, the aesthetic degree evaluation of human-machine interaction interface layout of the driller’s console of an AC variable frequency drilling rig was taken as an example to verify that this method was helpful for designers to optimize the design scheme. The experimental results showed that the proposed method was feasible and effective compared with the method of paired comparison commonly used in psychophysics.

Along with the development of social economy and culture industry, Garden Aesthetic Evaluation is becoming one of the focus issues for culture industrial administration department and tourists. This paper holds the view that different factors which affect the garden aesthetic perception will not influence the evaluation results linearly and irrelevantly. These factors have their own psychological foundation which are complicated and interactional psychological structure formation in the forming of aesthetic perception. By the Structure Equation Model (SEM), this article used the theoretical research and empirical study on garden aesthetics evaluation and the research results show that the data support the hypothesis of psychological structure formation in achieving garden aesthetics perception. The Researchers can design different structure models for different types of gardens, and obtain data by random sampling in the follow-up studies.

The set up of practical methods for evaluation of web site aesthetics from the user perspective and the provision of useful feedback to designers is an open issue in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The paper presents an evaluation study of aesthetic attributes of two web sites from the user perspective and compares the results to the design team. The study initially involved the formulation of a set of aesthetic attributes and their appreciation by a user group of 111 users for two web sites, following a traditional user testing approach. The user evaluation was then compared to the design team’s appreciation of these aesthetic attributes for their own designs. The main results of this test was that: (a) the two groups have a similar view about the presence of a considerable number of the selected aesthetic attributes; (b) users have rated most aesthetic attributes significantly lower than designers; (c) different aesthetic attributes become important for different objects of study for both groups. The design team found the evaluation informative and inspiring; however they identified the need for further explanation of user responses in terms of suggested design patterns and examples. Also, a number of recommendations towards an evaluation method of aesthetics in HCI are identified and discussed

Abstract:
This paper examines and critiques Heidegger’s repudiation of aesthetics in his essay ‘The Origin of the Work of Art’ and claims that his alternative approach to artworks in the essay must be understood as a theory of aesthetics and, more particularly, of aesthetic use, which delineates the inseparability of senses and sensations. The paper analyses Heidegger’s explicit remarks on aesthetics in the epilogue, discusses his criticism of the aesthetic thing-interpretation at the beginning of the essay and concludes with some critical observations on Heidegger’s own aesthetics. While critical of Heidegger’s separation of the equipment from the artwork, the paper claims that Heidegger’s significant contribution to the field of aesthetics must be sought in his focus on the attenuation of the subjective element in aesthetic experience.

Full text
Abstract:
The author examines the notion of informational aesthetics. The origin of aesthetics lies in Epicurus’s notion of aesthesis and the integration of artistic activity within ethics and the ‘good life’—as in the aesthetic theory and practice of the East. The debasement of the word ‘aesthetic’ reflects the increasing alienation of beauty from imagination. The fragmentation of art now packaged as media objects in our digital world is the legacy of this alienation. The author retraces the history of the concept of information aesthetics developed in the 1960s by Birkhoff, Bense and Mole and which sought to marry mathematics, computation and semiotics with artistic activity, based on Birkhoff’s aesthetic measure, and to bridge the gap between science and the humanistic imagination. The failure of the cognitive school is attributed to the limitations of its data-driven view of art itself as an affordance of perception (Arnheim). The roles of algorithmically generated art and of Computational Aesthetic Evaluation (CAE) are assessed. An appeal is made to the more fertile conceptual ground of information civilization—an idea developed by Professor Kun Wu. The author introduces the concept of digital iconography and applies it to Renaissance masterpieces such as Raphael’s School of Athens and Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. In conclusion, Informational Aesthetics is identified as a future discipline for the Philosophy of Information.

Abstract:
Based on the fundamentals of visual art and function, this research has developed a product design methodology capable of quantification of the aesthetic qualities and proposing objective solutions to enhance the appearance related variables and characteristics of a product. The objective evaluation has been done via analysis of involuntary responses using eye-tracking data based on the visual perceiving process of design. The result confirmed the reliability of the methodology by generating constant results and a good match between the measured values and declared preference. In addition, the aesthetic enhancement methods based on quantified metrics with the sample designs have been provided. The result of the research suggests that eye-tracking technology is a reliable tool in aesthetic evaluation and has potential for further development.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the visual aesthetic performance of Web sites. An experiment was conducted in which a Web site, designed with three controlled levels of 'visual enrichment', was evaluated on a number of measures by two subject groups. The measures used represent facets of the Categorical-Motivation model of aesthetics, plus others directly related to the performance of Web sites. The results of the experiment indicate that the drivers of site evaluation were primarily exploratory variables that represent 'novelty', 'interest' and 'fun'. This supports the argument that an important question to consider when designing a Web site is not merely 'can the site's audience use the Web site?', but also 'does the site's audience want to use the Web site?' Visual, audio and interactive appeal are, as the findings show, very important design considerations. This research adds to a body of knowledge that seeks to understand aesthetic phenomena and develops a theoretical framework that will prove useful for the investigation of visual interfaces.

Fawver, Kurt. "The Terror of Possibility: A Re-evaluation and Reconception of the Sublime Aesthetic." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4482.

Full text
Abstract:
While the sublime aesthetic has a long and complex critical history, it is nonetheless a schizophrenic concept. Indeed, in the over two thousand years since the sublime became a subject of learned inquiry, it has not been resolved into any one concrete idea, but has become, rather, an expansive tapestry of disparate if interconnected theoretical threads from which aestheticians may pick and choose to define what they mean by the term "sublime." Kant postulates one sort of sublime, Burke another, and Lyotard, Zizek, and the Romantics still others. In this way, the contemporary sublime aesthetic is, in essence, an ever-extending discourse of recombinatory effort. The goal of this dissertation is to stitch together the competing conceptual threads that constitute the contemporary definition of the sublime aesthetic and to uncover the foundational core from which all those ideas spring. Through analysis and deconstruction of several major theories on the sublime as well as through critical evaluation of a host of literary and cinematic texts (for example Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and Don Delillo's White Noise), this dissertation contends that the deepest substratum of the sublime aesthetic lies in dynamism and possibility. Indeed, both art objects and philosophical rationale show that the sublime aesthetic is, at base, the recognition of the entire sphere of the possible and its necessarily constitutive threatening dynamism in a physically or ideologically destructive object or act of vast size, power, or mystery. This dissertation argues that a theory of the sublime as possibility that entails uncontrollable dynamism helps to further clarify - if not fully explicate - the aesthetic and resolves the tension and incompatibility between preexisting ideas on the subject. Therefore, as a new theory of the sublime aesthetic, this dissertation is, at very least, a novel formulation of an ancient and undervalued concept in art and critical theory and, at best, a work that unearths the deepest, heretofore unrecognized, layers of an aesthetic experience central to human perception.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to apply the Post-Modern aesthetic model proposed by Wetzl-Fairchild (1990) and a data collection method (verbal protocol) in order to establish a useful methodology for studying the aesthetic experience of a viewer in an art exhibition. I studied the interaction between a contemporary exhibition and professionals variously familiar with the artworld. I find that Fairchild's model is useful as a theoretical framework in coding the protocols and confirm that the think-aloud protocol can provide accurate data with respect to the cognitive activity of an art viewer. I suggest that the viewers' context became the pivotal issue determining the quality of their experience and propose that this context become the focus of further study in the exhibition design process. I conclude that personal context is pivotal in all aspects of art education, whether in a classroom or an art exhibition.

Abstract:
Novel, functional, and aesthetic products are thought to have a high likelihood of success in the marketplace. While making sound design decisions is a critical ability of good designers, evaluating product concepts for their future successes in the marketplace is a challenging task. In design classes, only about half of product concepts selected by student design teams may be retained and prototyped into final products, i.e., about half of student design teams find that their initial product concepts are difficult to make workable and change to different concepts by the time they create prototypes for testing. This paper investigates if electrophysiological concomitants in product concept evaluation may potentially be used to improve students’ and designers’ product concept evaluation processes. The preliminary data in this pilot study indicate that distinct decision-making processes may occur during evaluations of product concepts on novelty, functionality, and aesthetics, evidenced by brain activation differences among students.

Abstract:
Abstract The benefits of including aesthetic factors in the design of mechanical systems have been receiving increasing attention and study. Designs that successfully incorporate aesthetic considerations are more likely to create positive impressions in users, while offering increased usability and improved ergonomics. However, mechanical system design methods that successfully integrate the simultaneous evaluation of aesthetic factors with other parameters are not yet widely used. This paper presents a total design method that specifically includes aesthetic factors in the design process. The proposed method consists of three parts: (1) the analysis of the aesthetic factors; (2) the analysis of other factors (e.g. cost, function, mechanical characteristics, and so on); and (3) the evaluation of the overall system, using evaluation maps that include all system information. The use of evaluation maps allows other mechanical system factors to be treated concurrently with those of aesthetic importance. This method is applied to the design of a service robot that will offer a cup of beverage to a person.

Abstract:
This paper presents a show case of aesthetic robot design considering technical function constraints and using engineering performance analysis method. First a project goal was determined based on a robot aesthetic analysis. Decision matrices were used to evaluate the aesthetic satisfaction in both component and assembly levels of the design while the scores were assigned subjectively through panel discussion. 3D printing technique was used to get the physical models for rapid verification of the design and to facilitate the design evolution. Examples are given for robot component design as well as the overall evaluation of the robot aesthetics.
