Abstract:
This article analyzes the concept of postcolonial aesthetics as developed and debated by such critics as Bill Ashcroft, Elleke Boehmer and Robert Young. In particular, it critiques Ashcroft’s theorization of the postcolonial aesthetics in his article ‘Towards a Postcolonial Aesthetics’ and recommends an alternative approach to the conceptualization of postcolonial aesthetics with reference to Muhammad Hasan Askari’s essay on Ahmed Ali’s novel Twilight in Delhi. It questions Ashcroft’s emphasis on the hybrid linguistic makeup of the postcolonial text as the source of the particular aesthetic effects of the text and emphasizes the need for differentiating between affection– the writer’s deep sense of engagement with and involvement in the narrative – and affectation – a clever use of native words and expressions by the writer to authenticate his or her cultural identity – in discussing the affective dimension of a postcolonial text. The article argues that the aesthetic impact of the postcolonial text is produced by the intensity of experience and emotional involvement of the postcolonial writer (affection) as opposed to being produced by creative wordplay and mixing of local and foreign languages (affectation). Thus, the article contributes to the ongoing debates about the aesthetic dimension of postcolonial literature.

Abstract:
Hans Vaihinger, in the late nineteenth century, posed a now famous trilemma for Immanuel Kant's theory of affection: (1) If things-in-themselves are the affecting objects, then one must apply the categories beyond the conditions of their application (space and time). (2) If one holds that appearances are the affecting objects, then one must hold that these appearances which are the effects of affection are themselves the causes of affection. (3) If one holds that things-in-themselves affect the noumenal self in parallel with appearances affecting the empirical self, then that which is a representation for the noumenal self must serve as a causally efficacious thing-in-itself for the empirical self's production of an empirical representation of the very same object (so-called ‘double affection’).

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to show the connection between affection theory and romantic concepts of emotions (mesmerism and melancholy) in Artur Daniel Liskowacki’s 2007 novel Mariasz. By way of introduction, the author presents in brief the most important research on affective turn conducted in Poland and around the world, and also shows the possibilities of affective reading. The next part of the article is an interpretation of Mariasz. What is more, affection theory, as it is used in the novel, helps us to describe the ambiguous network of relations between the characters more fully and clearly, who experience similar affections, despite the temporal distance between them (romanticism and modernity). By analyzing Liskowacki’s novel we can identify the current relevance of the Romantic tradition in Polish literature after 1989, which is far from its martyrological connotations. Romanticism becomes a reference point for contemporary times, and original dialogues from that epoch allow the emotional nature of humans immersed in contemporary times to be described in full.

Abstract:
Trust has been noted as a key component for the success of knowledge management. Recent research on affection in interpersonal trust using empirical research suggests that affection plays a critical role on team effectiveness, knowledge transfer and sharing in team. Yet, the empirical research only obtains a certain period of affection reflecting interpersonal trust; it can not observe the dynamic change of affection. The empirical data lacks universality, which is merely focused on a designated team. In this paper, we give a primitive attempt, by using an agent-based computational model, to explore interpersonal trust, especially to study the quantitative method of emotion and affection generated by knowledge exchange and factors on emotional and affective intensity. We hope that our bold attempt improves the understandings of affection generation and development, and provides agent-based modelling simulations as a supplement of the empirical research to study team effectiveness in future.

Abstract:
The article examines the dynamics of space surrounding Shanghai’s rampant urban change as experienced by the Chinese artistic duo known as Birdhead. Underpinned by the conceptual framework of the “affective turn”, this study reflects upon and addresses how the photographer’s chaotic photo-essay of Shanghai’s new state housing (Xincun, New Village, 2008) can function as a nexus of place-making. With a claim to impetuous emotion in his works, Birdhead’s contemporary photography pervades a plane of subjects, objects, and affections, in which the city is imagined and experienced as space-body performativity. Understanding Birdhead’s everyday urban practices as performative, we claim that the visual performance of these photographs not just materially shapes the bodies, but also acts as a rhizomatic catalyst for both things-in-themselves and webs of social affection inside and outside Shanghai. As a contribution, this article’s theoretical application to Birdhead’s everyday networks of unruly and frenzied emotional tactics challenges the official formulation of realism. More importantly, their contemporary photography apprehends and territorializes elements of anarchy, at the very same time deterritorializing the omnipresent affective strategies of a propagandistic post-socialist apparatus that pressures the positive over “other” emotional representations of Shanghai.

This project intends to broaden the understanding of site by putting an emphasis on social, affectional and relational conditions. Hoping to begin a discourse on what existing values we as architects and developers bring with us into the future when proposing a design. This is achieved by the development and proposal of a methodology for uncovering, documenting and understanding how a community and its inhabitants relate to a specific place. The project aims to bring the question of social, affectional and relational site analysis to the surface, creating a forum for discussions of methodology and architectural approach relevant to all places going through substantial change. This is facilitated through the production of a workshop-series and an attempted interpretation of its rendered results through application in a drawn proposal for the site.

This collection attempts to answer the question “What is a story?” by presenting ten stories of characters who, in their attempts to do the right thing, either make things worse or create larger problems for themselves and their objects of affection. Inside, one will find the use of embedded storytelling, the implication of place and bystander, the exploration of violence as the last tool of the frustrated, failed attempts at redemption, and not too few dogs, some of which don’t even die.

Gao, Shan. "The Beauty of Nature As a Foundation for Environmental Ethics: China and the West." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2012. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc115080/.

Abstract:
My dissertation aims at constructing an environmental ethics theory based on environmental aesthetics in order to advocate and promote environmentally sustainable practices, policies, and lifestyles. I attempt to construct an integrated environmental aesthetics in order to inspire people’s feelings of love towards nature and motivate them to protect it.  In order to achieve this goal, I first examine the philosophical understanding and aesthetic appreciation of nature from philosophical traditions of China, which have an impact on the general public’s attitude towards nature. in chapter one of my dissertation, I point out that nature is viewed as an organic system which is always in a self-generating process of production and reproduction of life. the metaphysical foundation for this perspective of nature is ch’i. Therefore the aesthetic appreciation of nature in China is also the aesthetic appreciation of ch’i. with regard to the concept of ch’i, I focus on the following three questions: (1) what are the objective and aesthetic features of ch’i? (2) How do the Chinese appreciate aesthetic features of ch’i? (3) Why the objective features of ch’i are regarded as the objects of aesthetic appreciation? I argue that the Chinese appreciate the aesthetic features of ch’i by using intellectual intuition and that empathy is the reason why the objective features of ch’i are considered to be aesthetic features. in Chapter 2, I explain in detail the two aesthetic categories for aesthetic appreciation of nature in two major philosophical schools in China: emptiness and creativity. in Chapter 3, I examine the philosophical foundations for aesthetic appreciation of nature in the West. I first investigate the influence of traditional Western philosophy on the perceptions of nature. I argue that traditional Western philosophical thinking doesn’t support aesthetic appreciation of nature. I point out that aesthetic appreciation of nature started from eighteenth century in the West. I examine Kant’s aesthetic categories of beauty and sublime in his appreciation of nature. in contemporary world, I focus on the Allen Carlson’s positive aesthetics and Arnold Berleant’s engagement model to appreciate the beauty of environment. in Chapter 4, I evaluate the theories of aesthetic appreciation of nature in the West and China and attempt to construct an integrated theory of aesthetic appreciation of nature. the key point of this theory is to establish a caring relationship with nature based on aesthetic appreciation of nature and active participation in the beauty of it. This relationship will motivate people to protect nature and also contribute to human happiness.

Presently, we can notice the sprouting of many products and brands, in many sectors of the market. This hard competition leads firms to develop new communication strategies to make the public remember the advertised products and brands. One of the most used tools in advertising is humor and, in this work, we will examine and analyze the characteristics of this option, aiming at retaining the attention of the people to whom the advertising is addressed. It is noticed that products and brands advertised using humor have higher recall in television, but this doesn`t occur in print media. The proportion of advertisements correctly remembered is also higher when humor is present. It is also noticed that the majority of people prefer advertisings with humor than the ones without it, but people don`t change their attitudes because of the presence of humor, i.e., humor is not responsible for increasing the interest of the public for the advertised product.

Abstract:
This article presents a hybrid cell for human-robot collaboration (HRC) in flexible light assembly in manufacturing and investigates the effects of the robot’s dynamic affections on human-robot interactions (HRI) and assembly performance. We develop a one human-one robot hybrid cell using a humanoid robot with affection display ability where the human and the robot collaborate to assemble few parts into a final product. Based on an optimization strategy, the assembly subtasks are optimally allocated between the human and the robot. We determine a computational dynamics model of the robot’s affections for various situations associated with the assembly. Taking inspiration from the affection dynamics, we develop an affection-based motion control strategy for the robot so that the robot can dynamically adjust its affective expressions with task situations. We develop a comprehensive evaluation scheme to evaluate HRI and assembly performance in two different conditions of the robot: (i) the robot displays affections in its face dynamically with assembly task situations, (ii) the robot does not display affection. The results show that the motion control of the robot with dynamic affective expressions produce significantly better HRI and assembly performance than that produced by the motion control of the robot with no affective expression.

Abstract:
The present study compared to the three perceptional conditions of tactile affection−tactile tactility, visual tactility, and visuo-tactile affections−using psychological evaluation and psychophysiological methods. A comparative study was performed to fine out the differences of psychological and psychophysiological tactile perception according to the conditions of tactile perception. Furthermore, it also aims to find out the important fabric factor for tactile affection. Through the previous study, we found the fabric factors which influenced in tactile affection of fabrics: weave construction and fabric pattern. Total of six printed fabrics were developed by DTP method on naturally colored organic cotton fabrics as stimuli. Thirty participants were placed by randomized incomplete block design for the experiment. For measuring psychological affection, questionnaire was developed using a 9 points semantic differential scale. Electroencephalogram(EEG) was measured as a CNS response and electrocardiogram(ECG), skin conductance level(SCL), and photoplethysmography(PPG) were quantified as ANS responses. According to the results, perceptional condition had little effect on psychological and psychophysiological tactile perception. Significant effects on perceptional condition showed only on “showy-plain” affection and SCL response. Mostly, weave construction was more important fabric factor to perceive tactile affection than fabric pattern. However, the importance of fabric pattern also observed through the interaction effects.

Rao, Menaka, Shantanu Menon, Kushagra Merchant, and Aruna Pandey. Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action (SNEHA): An ethos of care. Indian School Of Development Management, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.58178/2301.1017.

Abstract:
This case study engages with the journey of SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action), a public health non-profit organization founded in Mumbai in 1999. India has the distinction of being witness to a long history of efforts by public-spirited healthcare professionals. Alongside treatment, their work in public health has consistently involved giving due emphasis to prevention, reducing the excessive reliance on institutional-led public health delivery, moving towards community-based approaches and giving considerable attention to maternal and child health, the bedrock of any sound public health system. The efforts of SNEHA (which means “love” or “affection”) in developing, expanding and adapting this approach amongst some of the world’s largest and dense poor and low-income urban settlements in India constitutes an important part of this history. Started with little funding, in a little over two decades, it now oversees over Rs. 29 crores of funds; and its programs, which started as small pilot projects to gather evidence, have evolved into large interventions drawing in many individuals and institutions along the way. Public health, unlike many other spaces of developmental interventions, demands balancing affordability, quality care and credibility with little margin for error. The case engages with the ways in which intentional evolutions to its practice have allowed SNEHA to grow, in full public glare, in a rapidly urbanizing agglomeration. The case also offers an opportunity for learners to reflect on how SNEHA’s organizational culture of appreciative inquiry and its adoption of technology have enabled it to hold together a team of 500 staff and over 6,000 volunteers; and how community-based models can overcome the shortage of full-time medical professionals in a resource-constrained to deliver consistently high standards of care.
