Abstract:
This project intends to broaden the understanding of site by putting an emphasis on social, affectional and relational conditions. Hoping to begin a discourse on what existing values we as architects and developers bring with us into the future when proposing a design. This is achieved by the development and proposal of a methodology for uncovering, documenting and understanding how a community and its inhabitants relate to a specific place. The project aims to bring the question of social, affectional and relational site analysis to the surface, creating a forum for discussions of methodology and architectural approach relevant to all places going through substantial change. This is facilitated through the production of a workshop-series and an attempted interpretation of its rendered results through application in a drawn proposal for the site.

Abstract:
This collection attempts to answer the question “What is a story?” by presenting ten stories of characters who, in their attempts to do the right thing, either make things worse or create larger problems for themselves and their objects of affection. Inside, one will find the use of embedded storytelling, the implication of place and bystander, the exploration of violence as the last tool of the frustrated, failed attempts at redemption, and not too few dogs, some of which don’t even die.

Gao, Shan. "The Beauty of Nature As a Foundation for Environmental Ethics: China and the West." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2012. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc115080/.

Abstract:
My dissertation aims at constructing an environmental ethics theory based on environmental aesthetics in order to advocate and promote environmentally sustainable practices, policies, and lifestyles. I attempt to construct an integrated environmental aesthetics in order to inspire people’s feelings of love towards nature and motivate them to protect it.  In order to achieve this goal, I first examine the philosophical understanding and aesthetic appreciation of nature from philosophical traditions of China, which have an impact on the general public’s attitude towards nature. in chapter one of my dissertation, I point out that nature is viewed as an organic system which is always in a self-generating process of production and reproduction of life. the metaphysical foundation for this perspective of nature is ch’i. Therefore the aesthetic appreciation of nature in China is also the aesthetic appreciation of ch’i. with regard to the concept of ch’i, I focus on the following three questions: (1) what are the objective and aesthetic features of ch’i? (2) How do the Chinese appreciate aesthetic features of ch’i? (3) Why the objective features of ch’i are regarded as the objects of aesthetic appreciation? I argue that the Chinese appreciate the aesthetic features of ch’i by using intellectual intuition and that empathy is the reason why the objective features of ch’i are considered to be aesthetic features. in Chapter 2, I explain in detail the two aesthetic categories for aesthetic appreciation of nature in two major philosophical schools in China: emptiness and creativity. in Chapter 3, I examine the philosophical foundations for aesthetic appreciation of nature in the West. I first investigate the influence of traditional Western philosophy on the perceptions of nature. I argue that traditional Western philosophical thinking doesn’t support aesthetic appreciation of nature. I point out that aesthetic appreciation of nature started from eighteenth century in the West. I examine Kant’s aesthetic categories of beauty and sublime in his appreciation of nature. in contemporary world, I focus on the Allen Carlson’s positive aesthetics and Arnold Berleant’s engagement model to appreciate the beauty of environment. in Chapter 4, I evaluate the theories of aesthetic appreciation of nature in the West and China and attempt to construct an integrated theory of aesthetic appreciation of nature. the key point of this theory is to establish a caring relationship with nature based on aesthetic appreciation of nature and active participation in the beauty of it. This relationship will motivate people to protect nature and also contribute to human happiness.

Presently, we can notice the sprouting of many products and brands, in many sectors of the market. This hard competition leads firms to develop new communication strategies to make the public remember the advertised products and brands. One of the most used tools in advertising is humor and, in this work, we will examine and analyze the characteristics of this option, aiming at retaining the attention of the people to whom the advertising is addressed. It is noticed that products and brands advertised using humor have higher recall in television, but this doesn`t occur in print media. The proportion of advertisements correctly remembered is also higher when humor is present. It is also noticed that the majority of people prefer advertisings with humor than the ones without it, but people don`t change their attitudes because of the presence of humor, i.e., humor is not responsible for increasing the interest of the public for the advertised product.
Abstract:
The problem of acute cerebrovascular accident (ACVA) has enormous socio-economic importance due to its significant prevalence. Since the ACVA have clinical and pathogenetic polymorphism, problem of differential diagnosis of diseases that mimic their clinic raised up. This problem was illustrated by the clinical case we present.Difficulty of differential diagnostic illustrated by case with patient who initially hospitalized with a diagnosis of ACVA, but later during dynamic monitoring and additional examinations diagnosis of MELAS syndrome was found. Aim: differential diagnosis of rare mitochondrial disease and acute cerebrovascular accident. Patients & Methods. Women, 54 years, come to the emergency room in hospital with stroke-like episode. Due to the local protocol she was examined with laboratory analysis, MRI of cerebri with vessels, CT and MRI of spine, EEG, consultation of ophthalmologist. Also were made analysis for cuprum, cerruloplasmine, homocysteine, transferrine, ferrum, lactate and biopsy of muscular tissues. Results: During neurological examination symptoms of ACAV were not found. MRI of the basal nuclei (mostly in globi pallidi) of the brain were found irregular symmetrical focuses (size 14x18 mm) without clear contours, with slightly increased intensity in T1 mode and low signal intensity on T2 mode. Bilateral in subcortical areas of white matter were found sites of gliosis (size 3x3,2 mm) in both frontal-parietal areas. In the vessels of the brain changes were not found. In analysys of blood serum were found normal levels of copper, ceruloplasmin, homocysteine and ferrum. However, moderate increase in lactate levels were observed. Within EEG epileptic activity was not found. A biopsy of muscle tissue revealed the phenomenon of "ragged red fibers" (severity score of 3-4), a sharp decrease in glycogen during the PAS-reaction. According to the results of examination of the patient were excluded ACVA (hemorrhagic and embolic), Wilson's disease, migraine and epilepsy. Biopsy showed the presence of muscle mitochondrial disease. Conclusion. Increased levels of lactate in the blood serum, the presence of the phenomenon of "ragged red muscle fibers" and found neurological symptoms indicate a reasonable suspicion about the presence of the MELAS syndrome. This case is also valuable because of the late manifestation of the MELAS syndrome (at the age of 54), that creates additional complexity of diagnosis.

Bryant, Diana Rowlands. "Affection and loyalty in an Italian dynastic marriage." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/8748.

Full text
Abstract:
xiii Abstract By the second half of the fifteenth century marriage had become a fundamental part of the process by which political alliances were forged between the ruling families of the Italian peninsula. Such marriages were impersonal affairs in which the bride had little or no input and no thought was given to the compatibility of the couple or the possibility that they might be happy. Such a marriage was that to which Eleonora d’Aragona (1450–1493) was committed by her father, Ferrante I, king of Naples, in 1465, when she was married to Sforza Maria Sforza of Milan. In 1472, when that still unconsummated marriage ceased to be expedient, a divorce was negotiated and a new marriage arranged. This time her husband was to be the warrior-prince, Ercole d’Este (1431–1505), who had spent time in the Neapolitan court and who a year earlier, had succeeded his half-brother, Borso, as duke of Ferrara. The magnificence of the events which accompanied Eleonora’s proxy marriage to Ercole in Naples, her bridal journey to Ferrara and her triumphal entry into that city were an indication of the importance which both Ferrara and Naples had attached to the marriage as a symbol of the friendship between them. Eleonora proved a remarkable bride. She bore Ercole five children, she acted as his regent during his absences on military campaigns, she endured separation from two of her children who remained with her father in Naples during the Pazzi War (1478–79). When her husband took a condotta with the League of Florence and Milan, to wage war against Pope Sixtus IV and Ferrante whose army was led by her brother the duke of Calabria, Eleonora juggled conjugal loyalty and filial duty to emerge unscathed, retrieve xiv her children, and lay the groundwork for peace negotiations. In this dissertation, however, I look beyond court ceremonial and public display and attempt to put a more human face on the marriage of the duke and duchess of Ferrara by focussing on the lives that they shared in private, as lovers, friends, parents and colleagues in the great enterprise of governing their small state. Using both the letters that they wrote to each other and the observations of others, I construct a picture of their marriage as a happy and successful partnership, in which mutual affection, loyalty and respect had replaced political expediency as the main driving force. I believe that it was the intimacy and trust which the couple shared in their marriage that enabled them to support each through the terrible events of the Pazzi War.

Migdat, Tiffany Ann. "The Effect of Marital Therapy on Physical Affection." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6418.

Full text
Abstract:
Research indicates that marital satisfaction is associated with levels of physical affection between partners. This is important because there is evidence of physical and mental health benefits of physical affection. Although past research has shown that marital therapy increases levels of marital and sexual satisfaction, the association between marital therapy and physical affection has not been explored. This study used a treatment group and a control group of 108 married couples to assess the relationship between marital therapy and physical affection over a course of 12 weeks. Using structural equation modeling and an actor partner analytic model, results indicated that marital therapy was significantly associated with increases in physical affection for husbands, but not wives.

Castellanos, Rafael. "Déconstruction de l'auto-affection pure : étude sur les notions de répétition et d'auto-affection pure à l'époque de Sein und Zeit." Thesis, Paris 4, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA040022.

Full text
Abstract:
If deconstruction begins somewhere, if its starting point is not already the original multiplication ofprinciple and origin, then it is necessary to say that it begins first as the deconstruction of pure selfaffection. The interrogation of the concept of pure self-affection is the interrogation of probably the lastattempt to think about subjectivity in the terms of a principle (which are of course the terms of“subjectivity”). The pure self-affection concept widely refers to the 1929 book by Heidegger on Kanttitled Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics. In this context, the concept of pure self-affection refersalready to repetition as the essential “device” for its production. The question of repetition is in factinseparable from pure self-affection deconstruction. If pure self-affection can work as another name fortemporality, then we have to show the reason for a well established fact : it is just through repetitionthat temporality can be disclosed. In this sense, repetition is already the repetition of the question onbeing (Sein und Zeit), but also the repetition of Kant (Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics). Now, thedetermination of temporality as pure self-affection, through Heidegger's repetition of Kant, supposesthe essential understanding of phenomenological temporality on the basis of Husserl's concept oforiginary impression. In this sense, as leading pure self-affection deconstruction, repetition – before theconstitution of identity – is to be found on the grounds of the originary impression itself

Dash, Suzanne. "Examining systematic information processing as a mechanism of preseverative worry." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2013. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/45214/.

Full text
Abstract:
The mechanisms accounting for how negative mood, intolerance of uncertainty (IU), and low problem-solving confidence (PSC) increase worrying are poorly understood. One possibility is that these variables result in a detailed, analytical, and cognitively demanding form of information processing, known as systematic processing. This thesis examines whether worry promoters (negative mood, IU, and low PSC) increase an individual's likelihood of deploying systematic processing. Furthermore, the impact of these variables on threat perception and coping beliefs – factors affecting both worry and systematic processing – is explored. Six studies were conducted. The first five utilised experimental manipulations of mood, IU and PSC, whilst the sixth used questionnaires. Systematic processing deployment was indexed by sufficiency threshold measures (confidence that processing goals are satisfactorily accomplished) and a questionnaire. Participants induced into a negative mood had raised sufficiency thresholds; they were more likely to deploy systematic processing High IU and low PSC manipulations did not cause an increase in the likelihood of using systematic processing, but these variables correlated with an increased likelihood of deploying systematic processing Only negative mood correlated with increased threat perception when regression analyses were conducted controlling for each of the worry promoters All three worry promoters correlated with decreased threat coping beliefs A small negative correlation was found between worry and systematic processing PSC showed some construct overlap with systematic processing Consequently, negative mood states may encourage individuals to systematically process threats that they perceive. But worry is also defined by IU and low PSC, factors which diminish self-efficacy appraisals in the form of coping beliefs. These low coping beliefs may serve to dissuade the individual from typically deploying cognitively demanding systematic processing. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of the role of systematic processing as a mechanism of perseverative worry.

O'Connell, Elaine Finbarr. "Emergent emotion." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2016. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/63197/.

Full text
Abstract:
I argue that emotion is an ontologically emergent and sui generis. I argue that emotion meets both of two individually necessary and jointly sufficient conditions for ontological emergence. These are, (i) that emotion necessarily has constituent parts to which it cannot be reduced, and (ii) that emotion has a causal effect on its constituent parts (i.e. emotion demonstrates downward causation). I argue that emotion is partly cognitive, partly constituted by feelings and partly perceptual. 1) I argue that both the type and the intensity of an emotion supervene on cognitive factors. But emotion cannot be reduced to cognition because emotions are paradigmatically valenced and cognitions are not. 2) I argue that the phenomenal properties of emotion are determined by bodily feelings, thus emotion necessarily requires feelings. But emotion cannot be reduced to feelings because emotion has rational properties not held by bodily feelings. 3) I argue that the intentional objects of emotion are perceptual objects, and hence emotion necessarily requires perception. But emotion cannot be reduced to perception because emotion has second orders (as evidenced by metaemotion) and perception does not. Thus emotion meets the first necessary condition for ontological emergence; emotion has constituent parts to which it cannot be reduced. I go on to argue that emotion has a causal effect on its 4) cognitive, 5) feeling, and 6) perceptual parts, both as a faculty and at the level of the individual emotion. Emotion meets the two individually necessary and jointly sufficient conditions for ontological emergence: (i) emotion has composite parts to which it cannot be reduced, and (ii) emotion has a causal effect on its composite parts. Thus emotion is ontologically emergent. Being ontologically emergent, emotion is sui generis.

Easterbrook, Matthew John. "Putting the person in their place : effects of physical and social contexts on identity, affiliation, and well-being." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2013. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/44623/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how particular psychological motivations operate in different social and physical contexts. Through a series of four papers, it both extends and empirically tests some of the theoretical claims made by motivated identity construction theory (MICT, Vignoles, 2011), which proposes that people construct their identities in ways to maximise or maintain the satisfaction of identity motives for self-esteem, continuity, distinctiveness, belonging, efficacy, and meaning. Although these identity motives been found to influence identity construction at individual, relational and collective levels of self-representation (e.g. Vignoles, Regalia, Manzi, Golledge, & Scabini, 2006), Paper 1 extends this by showing not only that identification with novel groups tracks the satisfaction of identity motives over time, but also, crucially, that different motives are related to identification with different types of groups. MICT further proposes that each of the motives can be satisfied in various ways, and that particular contexts promote and emphasise certain ways over others. Paper 2 extends this theorising to the belonging motive, showing that there are different ways that people can gain feelings of belonging from their group memberships, and that this depends on the type of groups involved. Paper 3 examines the effects of the built environment on the belonging motive, showing that physical features within flats that encourage the use of common areas increase the frequency with which flatmates coincidently meet each other. This increases their feelings of belonging associated with the group, leading, in turn, to increases in well-being. Paper 4 focuses on the distinctiveness motive and, using a large cross-cultural dataset, finds support for MICT's claims that the way the distinctiveness motive is satisfied varies according to the level of urbanisation in an individual's surrounding environment, in addition to their cultural context. The importance of incorporating social and physical contexts into psychological theories is discussed.

Fearn, Harriet. "The impacts of cyberhate." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2017. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/66869/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores the impacts of being exposed to hate material online, so called cyberhate, using social psychological theories of group identity as a framework to explore victimisation experiences when targeted directly or witnessing others from the same identity group being targeted, known as indirect victimisation. Three papers examine these impacts with two commonly stigmatised groups; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people (LGB&T) and Muslims. Paper 1 reports the results from two online surveys about the nature of cyberhate experienced by these two groups. Results indicate it is a common and frequent problem occurring over a range of internet platforms and mediums and there are a number of negative emotional reactions and behavioural intentions similar to those reported by Intergroup Emotions Theory after group identity challenges. Paper 2 uses qualitative interviews with victims of cyberhate to gain a detailed understanding of the impacts of being victimised. Participants indicated that there is a level of resilience to being targeted as bad behaviour is expected online, but being exposed to hateful material causes many to take avoidance action, avoiding certain parts of the internet. Paper 3 presents the results of an innovative experimental study exposing members of the stigmatised groups and a control to hate material. Those viewing group specific hate material felt angrier than when just viewing generally unpleasant material. The current research finds that being targeted online has similar negative impacts to offline hate crime, both to those who are targeted directly but also those who are indirectly victimised.

Grice-Jackson, Thomas. "Individual differences in the vicarious perception of pain." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2018. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/80918/.

Full text
Abstract:
Vicarious pain refers to the processes and experiences that arise from observations of other people in pain. Due to the interpersonal and multi-modal nature of these processes, research into the field is highly relevant for a number of key concepts in social cognitive neuroscience, such as empathy, multi-sensory processing and social cognition. The dominant approach in the field has been to focus on normative samples with little focus being given to inter-individual differences. The discovery of a subsample of the population who report conscious experiences of pain when observing it, so called 'mirror-pain responders', presents a significant opportunity for developing our understanding of the neural processes and characteristics associated with vicarious pain. The present thesis aims to extend understanding of this group who appear to lie on an extreme end of a spectrum of vicarious pain perception. Although past research has highlighted this group and made some attempts to identify their prevalence, few formal attempts have been made to stringently discover the prevalence and identify the characteristics of their qualitative experience. As such, ARTICLE I developed a questionnaire, named the Vicarious Pain Questionnaire (VPQ), which characterises mirror-pain responders based on their subjective experiences of pain. The results showed a surprisingly high prevalence rate for the condition, ~30%. In addition through the use of a cluster analysis, the VPQ identified subgroups within mirror-pain responders, which included a group who experienced sensory and localised mirror-pain, and a group that experienced affective and generalised mirror-pain. ARTICLE I and ARTICLE II both aimed at assessing the neural basis for the experiences and successfully highlighted the role of hyperactivity in vicarious somatosensory processing, through the use of electrophysiological (EEG) neuro-markers for somatosensory processing (mu rhythm) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activation in the somatosensory cortex during pain observation. Additionally, these articles highlighted the role of self-other processing regions through the use of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) which revealed reduced grey-matter volume in the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ), and psycho-physiological interactions (PPI) of fMRI processing which revealed connectivity networks between pain matrix regions and self-other processing regions (rTPJ and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC)). Characteristics of the mirror-pain were further assessed in ARTICLE III which in a battery of behavioural and physiological tests were administered to mirror-pain responders and controls. This study showed abnormal autonomic nervous system processing for Affective/General mirror-pain responders and confirmed the link between the condition and questionnaire measures of empathy. Finally, ARTICLE IV failed to provide a causal link between self-other processing regions (rTPJ) and somatosensory activation in response to pain observations through the use of theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in non-responders. This calls into question the direct causality of neural mechanisms associated with self-other theories of mirror-pain. This thesis demonstrates the importance of studying inter-individual differences in vicarious pain by reporting a set questionnaire and neuroimaging results which contribute to debates in the field and raises questions for future research. This work, its implications, and contributions to the wider literature are reviewed in the DISCUSSION chapter.

Mathers, Claire. "Motivational mechanisms underlying General Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer (PIT) : the effects of negative mood." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2015. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/54342/.

Full text
Abstract:
The extent to which motivational mechanisms contribute to reward seeking processes is crucial to our understanding of certain abnormal behaviours, including addiction. Pavlovian conditioning endows reward-associated stimuli with the ability to modulate goal-directed actions for that same reward (Pavlovian-to-Instrumental transfer; PIT). Learning and motivational theories attempt to describe the processes by which stimuli in the environment acquire incentive properties, attract attention and drive reward-seeking behaviours and bear many resemblances, but there are also important differences. This thesis uses a general PIT model in humans to further our understanding of these discrepancies and investigates the effect mood has on these processes. Firstly, altering the value of the reward affected the rigor of instrumental performance, but the same changes in outcome value did not affect the expectancy of, attention to, or emotional reactivity to the cues suggesting that in Pavlovian learning, apart from the nature of outcomes, the value of outcomes is encoded such that changes in outcome value prevent transfer of a Pavlovian cue's incentive properties to alter goal-directed action. Secondly, the further papers assess the extent to which mood modulates this same action. When under negative mood a general reduction in motivation, driven by an attenuated sensitivity to the reward was observed, as well as a dissociation between aversive and appetitive outcomes. The remaining study explored whether mood altered Pavlovian learning and revealed that those under state negative mood take longer to express their knowledge explicitly and that those under positive mood showed altered attention and emotional responses towards the same stimuli. The approach used in this thesis shows the merits of both motivational and learning theories, and further demonstrates the link between mood and motivation. Additionally, a dissociation between punishment and reward prediction when under negative mood was demonstrated and builds upon this important distinction.

Abstract:
Different ways to measure human affective and deceptive reactions to stimulus have been developed. One method is a multimodal approach using web camera, thermal imaging camera and physiological sensors data to extract different features in the human face (verbal and non-verbal behavior) such as breathing rate, heart rate, face temperature, skin conductance, eye tracking, language analysis and facial expressions among others. Human subjects from different ages and ethnicity were exposed to two different experiments were they watched videos (affection recognition) and others answered an interview session (deception recognition). With the data collected from videos (thermal and visual), different regions of interest (ROI) of the face were selected as well as the whole picture. The ROI were determined based on the most sensitive parts of the face where larger changes of temperature or other physiological features are recorded. It was also analyzed the language (written and spoken) in order to obtain the verbal modalities. The data has been compared among the subjects to determine whether the deceptive and affective reactions of a person can be predicted using multimodal approach. From the multiple data obtained, a characterization of reactions is proposed when subjects are exposed to different stimulus, positive or negative, as well as deceptive behavior and later on recognize if the person is happy, sad, nervous, anxious, telling the truth, lying etc. Using the multimodal approach we were able to predict automatically, with higher accuracy than the baseline, affective and deceptive states of a person. In the affective state recognition, the classifier software differentiated affective state versus neutral state with 92.85% accuracy. Then it differentiated Positive State, Negative State and Neutral State with 57.14% accuracy. Additionally, it differentiated Positive State versus Negative State with 73.21% accuracy. Finally, the classifier was able to predict Deceptive State (people lying) and Non Deceptive State (people telling the truth) with 72.72% accuracy.

Abstract:
This paper presents a research whose aim is to investigate the factors that lead the teachers to opt for teaching in Special Education. We are based on Vigotskys assumptions about the relations between cognition and affection, as well we consider the concept of perezhivanie, introduced by the author with regard to the affective dimensions in learning. For reaching the proposed objective we asked to fifteen teachers from Special Education in a public network of Vale do Paraiba to answer to a questionnaire, whose questions were based on the reasons which lead them to choose the Special Education. This study show us that special students teachers made their option according the cognitive-affective experiences established along their personal and academic trajectory. The questionnaires were analyzed according the Content Analysis proposed by Bardin. By the questionnaire analysis we can see that the affective involvement with the Special Education teaching begin with the existence of experiences with individuals that have some temporary or definitive limitation and need some adaptation or help to act in the social environment. For most of the interviewees teaching in this area demands constant signification and resignification of their practice because, according the analysis of their answers, the view the teacher must have of his/her performance is built up in a daily emotional experience. We believe that this paper may contribute to the reflection on teaching in Special Education. This work is part of the project: Interfaces between cognitive and affective aspects in the work of the language teacher.

Abstract:
Research has demonstrated that for a significant minority of men, exposure to sexually violent media results in a series of changes. These men are more likely to be sexually aroused by sexually violent stimuli, and also believe in certain rape myths and admit a greater likelihood to sexual aggression. The construct Attraction to Sexual Aggression, which comprises the affective, cognitive and behavioral responses to sexually aggressive media, has been proposed by Malamuth (1989a, 1989b). The Attraction to Sexual Aggression Scale has been developed as a dependent measure of the construct. A study by Malamuth and Check (1983) proposed that lack of pleasurable physically affectionate experiences with women may contribute to sexual aggression. This proposal reflects the theory put forward by Prescott (1977), who hypothesized that lack of physical affection at critical stages of development results in a greater propensity towards aggressive behavior. The current study is an initial investigation into attraction to sexual aggression and physical affection experiences.

Delightfully tactile: production of presence and affection in book design aims to discuss the materiality of the book through graphic design by using two different ways of seeing an object: the emotional design by Donald Norman (along with the affect theory by Antonio Damasio) and the production of presence by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. As a meaning of understanding the connection between them and how they can apply to the study of books, I describe four books that are part of the corpus of this research: Bartleby, o escrivão, by Herman Melville, and Avenida Niévski, by Nikolai Gógol, both published by Cosac Naify; Composition No. 1, by Marc Saporta and Tree of codes, by Jonathan Safran Foer, published by Visual Editions. These two publishers are part of a segment of the publishing design that as I argument works to reclaim the presence as a reference to the human being through the creation of graphic projects which try to affect the reader by using the tactile materiality. From the contrast between two traditionally designed books and the previously mentioned works, this dissertation tries to extract a comprehension of how the physical configurations of a book can change our perception of art.

Full text
Abstract:
The genetic turn in husserlian phenomenology, by discovering the passivity of the subject, puts in question the dominanc e and primacy of the latter. On the one hand, husserl recognizes the limits of his conception of intentionality : always having preceded itself, the subject is never in complete possession of itself; it is no longer a pure actuality, but in tentional life. On the other hand, husserl hodls on to a subject this side of the act, right down to the most passive layers of sense. He brings to light an anonymous subject, a living and affective self-presence which urges us to rethink the original mode of being of the subject. But this passivity is finally recuperated in an extreme transcendentalism which succeeds in enclosing in itself the world, time and the other, all three of which are modes of the pregiveness of the subject to itself

DeFries, Brett Bennett. "Physical affection: philosophies of lovability in early modern manuscript literature." Diss., University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6401.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation investigates how Renaissance Platonism and Neoplatonism at the turn of the Seventeenth century in England gave rise to new ways of thinking and writing about love. While it remains commonplace to see a clear and hierarchical distinction between the spiritual and the material in most seventeenth-century philosophies of love, the poets I consider all confront an emerging suspicion that all forms of love, from cupiditas to caritas and from eros to agape, require the lively activity of physical bodies, with all of the passions, affections, and humors that accompany and influence them. With chapters on William Shakespeare, John Donne, Thomas Traherne, and Andrew Marvell, I argue that an awareness of love as an embodied expression that precedes and conditions our interpretive judgments allows these poets to separate how well a being loves from how lovable that being is. This new orientation toward lovability appears not only in the content of these poets' work but also in the physical medium through which that content finds expression. I argue that the decision by each of these poets generally to avoid print and to restrict the circulation of their manuscripts reflects a sense of the poem both as a site of meditation on the meaning of lovability and also as a physical recognition of lovability in a specific addressee or intended reader. The poem comes to perform, in ways previously unthought and still woefully underconsidered, the very activity it describes. Drawing on archival research completed at the Bodliean and British Libraries, this dissertation brings together the traditionally distinct fields of manuscript studies, early modern English poetics, as well as contemporary ethical and political philosophy, particularly as brought into focus by the influential Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben. In the process, it offers original accounts of lovability in early modern English manuscript poetics and reveals what makes these poets as radical and timely now as they were in the 17th century.

Cabre, Philippe. "Epidémiologie, phénotype et traitement des affections inflammatoires démyélinisantes primitives du système nerveux central aux Antilles françaises." Thesis, Antilles-Guyane, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AGUY0511/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Aim of the study is to describe épidemiology, phenotype and treatment of demyelinating inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) namely multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO) in French West Indies.Epidemiology: MS emerged in the French West Indian (FWI) population with an incidence of 1.27/100 000 (CI 95%: 1.16-1.38) for the period 1992-2007 while incidence of NMO remained stable at 0.19/100,000 (CI 95%: 0.15–0.23). Both migration in Metropolitean France (MF) and decrease of sun exposure were risk factors for MS acquisition in FWI. Phenotype and treatment of NMO: NMO is a very rapidly disabling disease with median times to reach DSS 3, 6 and 8 of one year, 8 years and 22 years respectively. However, treatment by plasma exchanges were shown to reduce sequellae of NMO attacks ; mitoxantrone and rituximab reduced significantly annualized relapse rate (ARR) from 1.7 to 0.29 (p<10-4) and from 1,34 to 0,56 (p=0.0005) respectively, improving dramatically natural course of NMO.Phenotype and treatment of MS: Absence of Migration in MF in MS patients was found to be the strongest independent predictive factor of disability progression to DSS 6 (hazard ratio, 2.59; p=0.0002); beside short time to DSS3 (p=0.005), later age at onset (p=0.005), and multi-symptomatic onset (p=0.03). Treatment of MS by interferon beta-1 had a moderate impact in MS while natalizimab proved to be highly effective by reducing drastically ARR and inflammatory parameters on magnetic resonance imaging. Conclusion: Spectrum of demyelinating inflammatory disorders of CNS has reversed in French West Indies with overrepresentation of MS. Agressive therapy is needed to improve prognosis of NMO. Rapidly increasing of its incidence makes MS a new public health problem in French West Indies

Abstract:
Social bonds are necessary for human survival and affectionate communication is paramount for their formation and maintenance. Consequently, affection deprivation -the condition of receiving less affectionate communication than desired-is associated with social pain, and contemporary research indicates that social pain has substantial neurological overlap with physical pain. Thus, it was proposed that affection deprivation would be associated with the sensation of physical pain as well as with poor-quality sleep. Three studies involving a total of 1,368 adults from nearly all U.S. states and several foreign countries revealed significant associations between affection deprivation, physical pain, and multiple facets of disturbed sleep.

The Programa Institucional de Bolsa de Iniciação à Docência (PIBID) was our reserach field to try to understand those relationships built in the school context and what the implicatiions on the formation of those teacher are. Under the affection perspective presented by Henri Wallon we analyzed data colected from: an optional discipline of Experimental Science, scholarhsip awarded students that taught the course and the professor that supervised the school. Foloowing the assumptions of the Discursive Textual Analysis for the data analysis we obtained two categories, being The construction of the professor-student relationship that aims to understand the particularities of the relationship built between scholarship awarded students and the course's students, and The Initial Formation and Continued Formation, affective interactions on the formation of teachers that observerd the built relationship between the scholarship awarded student and the supervisor.

Abstract:
Music has been used to evoke emotions for centuries. The mechanisms underlying this effect have remained largely unclear. This thesis contributes to research on how music evokes emotions by investigating two mechanisms from the model of Juslin and Västfjäll (2008) - musical expectancy and emotional contagion. In the perception studies the focus is on how musical expectancy violations are detected by either musically trained or untrained individuals. In the music-making studies, we concentrate on mood change brought about by cheerful music in healthy and depressed individuals and factors which could modulate this change like personality, musical preference and general emotional state. The results indicate that the subtlest scale violations are detected at the level of brain electrical potential while the task remains behaviourally difficult. This suggests that scale information is processed using music-syntactic analysis and in memory existing representations of tonal hierarchies, instead of auditory sensory memory as previously believed. Music-making decreased anxiety, depression and fatigue in both depressed and healthy participants whereas arousal and positive mood increased. This suggests that musicmaking could be beneficial for depressed individuals in terms of improving their mood on a short-term basis, even though a reliable music-related decrease of depression symptoms was not found. Among healthy participants, intraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, musical training and liking of the music predicted positive changes in mood following a music-making session. Taken together, these studies indicate that subtle musical scale violations are detected even if they are not consciously perceived as deviants and could therefore be used to evoke emotions, and music-making improves the mood in both healthy and depressed individuals and could serve as a temporary relief in case of depression.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of self-compassion, self-criticism and brooding as mediators between insecure attachment and depression in a multimediational model. Additional aims were to investigate whether self-compassion and self-criticism were independent predictors of depression and whether self compassion could protect against depression through reducing self-criticism and brooding. Three hundred and fifty six participants selected through convenience sampling completed measures of attachment, self-criticism, self-compassion, brooding and depression as part of an online survey. Multiple regression showed self-criticism and self-compassion independently predicted depression. Multimediational analysis found that the relationship between anxious attachment and depression was fully mediated by self-criticism, brooding and self compassion. The relationship between avoidant attachment and depression was partially mediated by hated self-criticism and brooding. Hated self-criticism and brooding partially mediated between self-compassion and depression. This study linked the related areas of self-compassion and attachment, the findings add to evidence supporting the potential value of compassion-focused therapies and further clinical and theoretical implications are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:

Background: Focus on processes within organisations emerged during the nineteen ninetees and has since then become the most dominant management method. The main aim and positive features of process orientation is the customer focus and increased flexibility/efficiency. There is not much academic research conducted to leadership combined with processorientation. With this thesis we will minor that gap. The change into a process oriented approach makes a drastic change and the leadership could be a key factor or problem when implementing it.

Purpose with the thesis: The purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of how leadership is affected, on a top managerial level, as a result of implementing a process oriented approach.

Method: In this thesis we have used a qualitative method and a hermeneutic approach to increase the understanding of how the leadership is affected of process orientation. We have made a case study on the Swedish Road Administration, Vägverket who has done a process orientation. We have made six interviews with topmanagers at their headoffice.

Conclusion: We have come up with a model that states that a leader within a process oriented organisation can be compared with a tour guide. The model is based on our five key findings of how leadership is affected by changing into process orientation. These are: lead change, achieve aims, increase teamwork, increase communication and increase holistic view. These characteristics applies on a leader when changing into a process oriented organisation.

The thesis proposes the investigation of the various forms of understanding memory in the literary work of Monika Maron (Berlin/ Germany, 1941-), specially in Pawels Briefe [Pavels Letters] (1999). With eloquent wealth of treatises, the author’s work inspired different forms of understanding and questioning the subject of memory. Maron uses a family archive to create a post-memorial narrative and builds her historical –fictional- memorial book with pictures, letters and literary imagination. Pawels Briefe is put as a central piece in a broader view of Maron’s work. Subjects like post-memory, critical memory, generational narrative, trauma and grief are discussed, compared and questioned here. So are the issuesregarding the reception of memory texts. Addressing the juxtaposition of images and narrative, I support that photographic images represent not only an aide-memoire but also the inlcusion of silence in prose. Based on the works of Rancière and his arguments in favor of the representative potentiality of literature and questioning the eulogy of the irrepresentable, its objective is to include silence as a force in the field of language, instead of identifying it as something that is beyond it. In Pawels Briefe, by Monika Maron, this minute’s silence can be identified in the insertion of photographic pictures.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Ancient Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study the conceptualization of love or affecion in the Old Testament is investigated. The most prototypical Biblical Hebrew lexeme for affection, namely אהב , forms the focus of the study. It is hypothesized that the analysis of אהב in terms of its valency and the conceptual frames associated with each of its valency patterns will contribute to a more informative lexicographical description of אהב . Since אהב forms part of a much larger semantic field of lexemes that can convey the attitude of affection, it is neccessary to study these lexemes as well. While the first chapter introduces the topic under investigation, i.e. a study of lexemes of affection, the second chapter aims at demarcating the list of lexemes of affection that needs to be considered. This list amounts to fifteen lexemes in total; fourteen of which can belong to the domain of affection, and one antonym. In Chapter 3 the methodology of the current study is explained. The researcher advocates a Cognitive Linguistic approach. Renier de Blois employed Cognitive Linguistics for his model which is aimed towards compiling the Semantic Dictionary of Biblical Hebrew. While his model is used as starting point in the present study, some more areas of Cognitive Linguistics are identified that could assist us to refine the model of De Blois. These areas include prototype theory, semantic potential, the notion of radial networks, as well as conceptual frames. Chapter 4 consists of a detailed study of אהב in all its occurrences in the Old Testament, while the remainder of the lexemes of affection as well as its antonym are studied in Chapter 5. In the concluding chapter, Chapter 6, an exposition of the findings is given. This thesis ends with a concise summary of אהב in which all conceptual frames and scripture references where the אהב appear are given. This is followed by a schematic presentation of the lexemes of affection as they occur in relation to the prototypical sense(s) of אהב.

This paper is mainly described the years and the path of my life. Express the inclination of my inner self through the work of art. There are no certainties in life, one always cherish what they had lost. Time consist, therefore, living on the alternation of remorse. I suffer greatly from this substance and find ways to relieve this pressure from creating by painting. The love and recognition for my homeland is expressed in my landscape works, metaphor for my children the respect, appreciation for the nature, and the change within. The endless love and caring from the parents to their children is metaphorical meaning under my portraiture, showing giving without taking is the most priceless sentiment. When the time comes to the children willing to carry their filial responsibility, the circumstances change and against their wishes, the remorse arose and remains. One must keep in mind the Chinese version of “Hamlet”, to avoid the quarrel within the family, as it all come to the tragedy at the end. These entire emotion tangle together in my mind and thoughts, they become the impulse of my creativity. I am a great admire of Millet’s works. His respect ion and sincerity towards his religious transform by painting into the joy and gratification for life. Although there is bitterness in life, he was still living with the thoughts of appreciation. That is what we need to look up to. It is also my belief and I try to carry out in actions by making relationships of good fate. My professor has advice me not to let my emotions over float, but I could not help but to keep producing more works. Hoping one day, I could be like Millet, have a truly happiness and gratification mind.

Centering on family affection and its images and symbols as the soil and core of life, this thesis explores how Lin Fu-chuan expresses infinite gratitude for his beloved parents and family, translates his internal images and quest for love, and elevates parent-child affection in the everyday life to a larger concern for the family, the society, and the nation. The transition from family affection to universal benevolence accentuates its scope as the subject and principal image of his oeuvre. It enhances the artist’s understanding of and confidence in himself as a living being, who further clears the mist in his mind, and finds the value and meaning of life through his daily experiences and academic inquiry. Tracing Lin Fu-chuan’s love and concern for his parents, family, and finally to everything in his surroundings, the thesis examines the artistic essence and humanism of the images and symbols of family affection as a subject of painting. It analyzes the images and symbols by collecting and investigating the texts and theories from literature, Confucianism, and ethics. Apart from textual analysis, it inquires into the images of family affection and their expressions in Chinese and Western artists’ works in terms of iconography, symbolism and the theory of empathy. It then proceeds to expatiate the concept, development of elements, content, form, and technique in Lin’s paintings, based on the artist’s statement and practice. It concludes with a reflection on and expectation for Lin’s career as an artist. The thesis demonstrates Lin Fu-chuan’s emotional nature and observation of life, looks into the artistic practice and study of family affection as a subject of painting and its theoretical implications, discusses it with the ancient theories of art and his experiences, and how they are addressed in his style. Through the inner dialogue, he reveals, symbolizes, and suggests his inner world, engages in the interaction of the environment, the society, and individuals, contemplates the social and cultural development of his immediate surroundings, by which he discovers a profounder humanistic and emotional significance from them.

Study on the relationship between typhoon surge and typhoon properties at Cheng-gong Tidal Station in Taitung County, Geng-fang Tidal Station in I-lan County, eastern Taiwan , Syun-guang-zuei Tidal Station in Pingtung County, and Dong-shih Tidal Station in Chiayi County, western Taiwan was conducted in the present paper. Typhoon storm surge deviation will be affected by the topographical factors, meteorological factors and typhoon property. Topographical factors include the tidal station location and the slope and shape of the nearby continental shelf. Meteorological factors include the wind speed and wind direction near tidal station. Typhoon property include the typhoon-center atmospheric pressure, wind speed near the typhoon center, typhoon location (distance from the typhoon center to the tidal station), and the 7th grade wind storm radius of the typhoon. The analysis result shows the storm surges are highly concerned with typhoon center meteorological factors, eastern Taiwan. Surges in the west Taiwan are affected by typhoon center and tidal station meteorological factors clearly. An empirical typhoon-surge formula considered meteorological factors near typhoon center and tidal station was proposed in the present paper. Five coefficients in the empirical formula were determined by a regression analysis for each of the 23 sets of measured typhoon-surge data at Cheng-gong Tidal Station, Gen-fang Tidal Station, Syun-guang-zuei Tidal Station and Dong-shih Tidal Station between 1991 and 2001. Comparison reveals that the proposed empirical formula has some kind of success in storm-surge prediction at the Geng-fang Tidal Station, Syun-guang-zuei Tidal Station and Dong-shih Tidal Station. Especially, the temporal fluctuation of storm surge can be reasonably described by the present formula at Syun-guang-zuei Tidal Station and Dong-shih Tidal Station, western Taiwan.

At first, kraft paper packaging was used because of its functionality. However, there are more and more images and affection factors gradually being added infrom time to time, thus consumers could catch the message of the product. This study focuses on the kraft paper packaging to explore the affection factors of the material. This study aims to investigate the affection factors for kraft paper, which will be explored and discussed in three phases. The first phase establishes the affection factors for kraft paper. This was mainly achieved by conducting interviews with experts and consumers to acquire the affection factors for kraft paper, including the upper-level factors of affection vocabulary, the mid-level factors of material characteristics, and the lower-level factors of physical characteristics, which were finally used to construct a “framework of affection factor toward kraft packaging.” The second phase was exploring the relationship between kraft packaging and product image and creating packaging samples. In-depth interviews were conducted to understand the relationship between the images of kraft packaging and the packaged product. Kraft packaging was then created based on the interview results and the samples were used to investigate the differences in affection factors between suppliers, designers, and consumers in the next phase. The third phase was verifying the conformity of the affection images of the kraft packaging. Based on the packaging samples from the previous phase, the conformity between designers and general consumers was evaluated. The study result that main features (mid-level factors) of kraft paper materials for experts were “roughness,” “surface treatment,” “untreated kraft paper,” “bleaching,” “dyeing,” and “thickness,” whereas consumers were “roughness,” “surface treatment,” “color,” and “thickness.” The abstract reason (upper-level factors) given by experts were “ruggedness,” “natural,” “gentle,” “durable,” “elegant,” “meticulous,” “retro,” “young,” “light,” “civilized,” “modern,” “quaint,” “avant-garde,” “premium,” whereas consumers suggested “gentleness,” “rugged,” “natural,” “young,” “retro,” “premium,” “elegant,” “meticulous,” “avant-garde,” “modern,” “novel.”

In a competitive environment, how enterprises keep their advantages is becoming more and more significant. From many theoretical and practical researches, employees seem to be the key resource in a working place, which means to have a proper worker in a right position. However, some enterprises do not have a great understanding of making a good use of human resource to make things go smoothly and effectively. Thus this essay emphasizes on the issue of Manpower Inventory by interviewing eight enterprises. I analyzed the results from these eight enterprises to obtain the similarities and dissimilarities of using Manpower Inventory, like background, purpose, and goal. I hope this research will be a useful reference for all the enterprises. I highlighted the major points below: 1. These eight enterprises have different backgrounds and purses but all are willing to have a change to make a good use of human resource by using Manpower Inventory. 2. Manpower Inventory can be distinguished into regularity and particularity. The former one means to put manpower inventory in routine, in other words, to have manpower inventory regularly. The later, particular inventory will be brought up when the organization probably needs it. 3. Quantity inventory depending on the qualities of employees has different inventory means. Generally speaking, however, multi-index is the better method. Skill inventory is supposed to have some related aids to promote workers’ special skills. 4. Manpower Inventory is connected with working achievement, resigning improper employees and promoting proper employees, to make the company stay strong and effective. Adjusting by the entire environment is the key to gain effects. 5. Manpower policy depends on the predictable produce. When the shortage of employees happens in a short term, asking for more hours working, taking shift turns or having helpers from outsider, can solve the problem. On the other hand, when a company has a quilter business, some workers might be asked to have days off without getting paid or even be let go. 6. Human resource department is supposed to follow the future development and find the solutions for the predictable problems. However, planning cannot always follow the changes. Being flexible and having well communication, therefore, will be the best way to untangle unexpected problems and achieve manpower inventory plan.

This research studies the production and shipment scheduling of a one manufacturer and two customers system. With limited transporter capacity, if the manufacturer can combine the shipping of several orders into one transporter, shipping cost can be reduced. The goal of this paper is to investigate how optimal production and shipment schedule interact under different scenarios. Our numerical studies indicate manufacturer needs to consider shipment batching when orders are more likely to be early. When the distances between the manufacturer and customers are closer to each other or delay cost is larger the manufacturer should not consider shipment batching when setting up production scheduling.

Desmeules-Doan, Virginie. "La chair, entre immanence et transcendance : lecture du corps chez J.-K. Huysmans et Georges Bernanos." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/24183.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the question of the body, where Michel Henry’s phenomenology of the flesh and Kierkegaard's concept of anxiety are articulated by an analysis of J.K. Huysmans’ En Route (1895) and George Bernanos’ Sous le soleil de Satan (1926). The choice of fiction to render the mystery of God "perceptible"- to give God shape and form, flesh and substance - through fictional characters is fully in line with the Christian belief in the Incarnation, as Christianity is indeed a religion characterized by the incarnation of eternal and absolute realities in the relative and the contingent. The theoretical framework of the philosophy of the flesh conceptualized in Michel Henry’s Incarnation (2000) will serve as our principal theoretical framework for thinking about the relationship that the body maintains with immanence and transcendence; that is to say, the institutions of self-affection and hetero-affection. In the second chapter, we will evaluate Henry’s reclaiming of Kierkegaard's concept of anxiety in Incarnation. In addition to the dialogue between these two philosophers of pathetic subjectivity, the phenomenological thought of Merleau-Ponty and Jean-François Lavigne will allow us to test Henry’s principal thesis of absolute immanence. This research is at the crossroads of literature, philosophy, and theology.
