Abstract:
Abstract The notion of Befindlichkeit in Heidegger’s phenomenological way. Heidegger’s phenomenology of Befindlichkeit and the different kinds of affection was initiated still before Being and Time, and developed in its essential features till the end of the 1930’s. The current paper argues that, since its very origins in a philosophical framework, back to the translation of the affectiones in Augustine, the notion of Befindlichkeit sets the beginning of a structural understanding of existence - displayed both at the ontological levei of Grundstimmungen (such as anguish, boredom or reservedness), and at the ontic level of different factual Stimmungen. Any comprehensive analysis of those affections counts on a tripie background with a Wovor, a Worum and the full-fledged exercise (Vollzug) of such and such affective understanding. In Being and Time this analysis is dedicated to fear, in its different nuances. But this phenomenon was already dealt with in Heidegger’s Lectures on Augustine (1921) and will reoccur in the Beiträge (1936-38). A reading of this conceptual evolution will here ground a defense of the phenomenological character of Heidegger’s way of thinking.

Abstract:
Wszystkie te trzy sytuacje Tomasz okre&shy;śla mianem <em>affectiones</em>. Oczywiście mia&shy;no to dotyczy w nich ich wolitywnego komponentu.

Engelland, Chad. "Amo, Ergo Cogito: Phenomenology’s Non-Cartesian Augustinianism." American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 95, no. 3 (2021): 481–503. http://dx.doi.org/10.5840/acpq202162229.

Abstract:
Phenomenologists turn to Augustine to remedy the neglect of life, love, and language in the Cartesian cogito: (1) concerning life, Edmund Husserl appropriates Augustine’s analysis of distentio animi, Edith Stein of vivo, and Hannah Arendt of initium; (2) concerning love, Max Scheler appropriates Augustine’s analysis of ordo amoris, Martin Heidegger of curare, and Dietrich von Hildebrand of affectiones; (3) concerning language, Ludwig Wittgenstein appropriates Augustine’s analysis of ostendere, Hans-Georg Gadamer of verbum cordis, and Jean-Luc Marion of confessio. Phenomenology’s non-Cartesian Augustinianism can tell us something about phenomenology, namely that it is engaged in the project of recontextualizing the cogito, and something about Augustine, namely how radically different his project is than Descartes’s. Phenomenology presents an Augustine that is well positioned for the debates of our times concerning mind and world, desire and the human person, and language and embodiment.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Lately revealed new data on neurogenetics of perinatal affections of central nervous system (CNS). The degree of genetic determination of perinatal affections of CNS is not similar in different cases and might vary in wide ranges. Prematurity is main mechanism of genetic predetermination of perinatal affections of CNS. Beside direct affection to brain, all main ethio-pathogenetic factors of hypoxia-ischemic affections of CNS (hypoxia, malnutrition of pregnant, stresses, smocking, alcohol-drug abuse, prematurity) can cause epigenetic changes of neuro-expression with forming cerebral phenotype, which is sensitive to perinatal affections. So new data obliges to change approaches to prevention of perinatal affections of CNS.

Abstract:
AARONG dairy area of Pabna comprises a major part to meet the demand of milk and meat production in Bangladesh. Various diseases including surgical affections reduce the fitness, efficiency and productivity of cattle in this area. There is a need to investigate the occurrence of surgical diseases to take proper preventive measures. Therefore, the prevalence of surgical affections of cattle was studied in four Upazilas of Pabna from December 2012 to May 2013. A total of 2390 cattle from different households were included and surgical affections were recorded. The overall prevalence was 44.3% in stall feeding system, among which surgical affections were more prevalent in Sujanagar Upazilas (13.3%), and the highest prevalent surgical affection was foot diseases (8.2%) followed by navel ill (6.3%), myiasis (4.6%), arthritis, hernia and wounds (3.6%). Overall prevalence of surgical affections was slightly higher in female cattle in comparison to males The prevalence of navel ill (11.3%), foot disease (11.1%), hernia (6.1%) and horn affections (4.9%) were found to be higher in male. Whereas, myiasis (5.9%), upward patellar fixation (2.8%) were found to be higher in females. There is significant (P&lt;0.01) difference in the prevalence of hernia, upward patellar fixation, horn affection, foot diseases and myiasis between male and female. It was also observed that cattle of 0-1 year was affected more frequently with surgical affections (18.7%) among which prevalence of navel ill (15.5%), hernia (8.3%), myiasis (5.4%) and foot diseases (5.3%) were higher. In addition, foot disease was more prevalent surgical affection in cattle of more than one year. Moreover, significant variation (P&lt;0.01) was existed in the prevalence of upward patellar fixation, foot diseases, arthritis and wounds among three age groups. However, results of the present study indicate that there is a strong relation among the prevalence of surgical affections, sex and age of animals. Moreover, foot disease is a common occurrence in stall feeding cattle in Pabna.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v24i1-2.19104 Progress. Agric. 24(1&amp;2): 85 - 92, 2013

Schulten, Emily. "Widowed Affections." TopSCHOLAR®, 2004. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/514.

Full text
Abstract:
In the manuscript I will complete, currently titled Widowed Affections, an array of emotions and experiences will be covered in a manner capable of serving each reader in their own way. This manuscript will follow through five sections: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Despair/Depression, and Acceptance. Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross is credited with these five stages, the stages of grief/coping with a loss. In this psychiatrist's book On Death and Dying copyrighted in 1969, she explores these five stages deemed necessary in order to get over loss in a healthy manner. These stages can be experienced in any order but are traditionally listed in this one. These stages are also suggested to be what goes on within a patient who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. It is for these reasons that it will be appropriate for a large audience to find it easy to reflect within a manuscript organized this way. In each of these sections, corresponding poems will appear to serve the reader with a feel for what will follow within that section. The five or six other poems in each section will relate to the inspirations of thought conjured by each stage of grief. While some relate more directly to this process, others allow for room to ponder in one's own manner life and loss. In addition, none of these works are set up in a way to limit or sentimentalize these emotions. Rather it is my goal that these works describe the stages in a manner different from the psychiatrist's standpoint or that of support books. Each poem should relate examples and images that may provoke response quite different from that of the usual outcries such as why me?, this can't be happening, what can I do to stop this? and how do I go on? Also important is that grief comes in different shapes and sizes. Loss may not be associated with death for everyone, nor is this a way in which this manuscript will be limited. The title of the manuscript is taken from a quote by James Martineau: "Grief is only the memory of widowed affections." Martineau was a 19th Century Unitarian minister and was principal at Manchester New College. This title represents the loneliness of one's struggle with grief, as well as the human weakness of the emotions that come with grief. My hope is that the works within the manuscript convey both of these aspects of grief in light of its five most notable outcomes: those of the five stages in Kubler-Ross's book. Most all of the works are free verse and vary in length as appropriate to the subject, situation or story of each. Some of these may get their message across in one stanza, while others utilize several to convey a plethora of images. Several have been previously published in small journals. Four of the poems in the manuscript will experiment with form. Two are sonnets, though neither of these uses the traditional patterns of the sonnet: Shakespearean, Petrarchan or Spenserian. Both will, however, use a rhyme scheme. The other two poems using form will be a sestina and a villanelle. The villanelle will be in loose iambic pentameter. One of the sonnets and the sestina, "Despair" and "Anger," respectively, will be poems corresponding with one of the five stages of the grief process. My goal is to compile this manuscript in a way that conveys the journey that the grieving process can take a person on, including how it can affect a grieving person's outside relationships. Without becoming saccharine or dismal, I hope that these feelings and images can impose upon the reader a sense of chaos within a grieving life/world.

Artist Statement I am an ardent artist. I am always creating, even in my sleep. The ideas, images, and visions awake me from my dreams. I have been creating in various media since I was a very small child. The materials beckoned that child to play, as a grown up I can’t resist it. I am driven to play, explore, and experience with my all emotions and senses. My work has revolved around the exploration of objects or obsessions of my affections. They give an insight to how I feel about love and being in love. They depict objects I want to have around me and can’t seem to live without. Many of the works are presented literally while others are a symbolic representation of my inner thoughts and desires.

Hordern, Joshua. "Political affections : a theological enquiry." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4486.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is a theological enquiry into the nature of human affections (or ‘emotions’), their role in morality and their significance for political relations. The argument builds critically on the work of cognitivist theorists of emotion, such as Martha Nussbaum, who oppose both rationalist disavowals of the reasonableness of emotion and empiricist fascination with physical sensation. Nussbaum holds that emotions’ intentional (object-directed), evaluative quality indicates a cognitive aptitude. Using the language of ‘affection’, the argument shows how this aptitude shapes individuals’ and communities’ interrelation with their diverse systems of valuation, the created, vindicated moral order and creation’s God. Drawing on phenomenological and spiritual approaches, the endurance of affection is accounted for through the connection of memory and affection while virtue is assigned a secondary place as a fragmentary and less reliable contributor to such endurance. Affections emerge as the beginnings of attracted understanding concerning the world as it appears, the world as it is and the world as it will be, recognitions of value which are open to intersubjective discussion and initiate moral reflection and deliberation. Jonathan Edwards’ account of affections is found epistemologically and ethically implausible but his doctrine of excellency is adopted to interpret the nature of affections’ endurance and eschatological participation in the moral order. With particular attention to joy, shame, anger and awe, the intersubjective, affective dimension of political life is then explored through consideration of certain institutions, practices and traditions of modern political societies, ancient Israel and the early church as represented in Luke and Acts. Affective wisdom within institutions of political representation and law are considered in light of secular and Christian political eschatologies. Findings from this discussion then guide a conversation between European ‘constitutional patriotism’ and British conservatism which explores the connection between affections and locality. An account of national identity is given which takes localised affective understanding seriously yet relativises it in light of the transnational affective understandings which stem both from the international political system and from Christian faith. Finally, the role of churches’ affections within modern political society are discussed. Resources from the Lutheran tradition are utilised to examine the political significance of churches’ joyful praise of the crucified, risen Jesus Christ.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Our social world is increasingly chaotic. Perhaps there has always been chaos; but our increasingly globalized landscape and information economy seems to place chaos on the frontlines—as videos of military strikes in Iraq, or mundane narratives about making it through another day are available for consumption at any time. Our social world produces. The question: What to do with it all? This dissertation explores the concept of affect, using a collage methodology. To conduct an exploration of affect, which “transpires within and across the subtlest of shuttling intensities” (Seigworth and Gregg 2), this dissertation both explores and performs collage; taking collage as both an artifact for investigation using affect theory, as well as a methodological approach participating in the creation of affect theory. As a result of this commitment, the reader is invited to enter this document in any order they wish—reading directly through, or skipping around chapters as it suits them. As a method, collage operates through placing at least two different things next to each other, and then looking for similarities and differences. Each chapter explores differences by juxtaposing artifacts selected because of a similarity that they shared. Spatial (Harvey Butchart and the Havasupai Native Americans), methodological (the It Gets Better project and Ray Johnson), temporal (September 11, 2001 and September 11, 1973), or praxis-based (Chelsea Manning and Aaron Swartz) similarities guided the juxtaposition of artifacts within each chapter. In addition, each chapter explores a distinct version of affect theory to add to the collage created within and throughout this dissertation. Each chapter is a canyon, collected within the grand canyon of the dissertation as a whole. Ultimately, this dissertation is guided by both academic and artistic impulses. I seek to explore and produce affect theory through deploying the methodology of collage. Drawn to moments that often escape rational interrogation, this dissertation invokes echoes as evidence in order to mobilize a system of resonance through juxtaposition that realizes the power of collage: Establishing interpretive frames that refuse to be finished or fixed. Through the performance of collage methodology, this dissertation seeks to implicitly argue for rhizomatic knowledge systems as a method of resistance to structures of oppression via an aesthetic mobilization of collage.

In ASME 2015 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/dscc2015-9841.

Abstract:
This article presents a hybrid cell for human-robot collaboration (HRC) in flexible light assembly in manufacturing and investigates the effects of the robot’s dynamic affections on human-robot interactions (HRI) and assembly performance. We develop a one human-one robot hybrid cell using a humanoid robot with affection display ability where the human and the robot collaborate to assemble few parts into a final product. Based on an optimization strategy, the assembly subtasks are optimally allocated between the human and the robot. We determine a computational dynamics model of the robot’s affections for various situations associated with the assembly. Taking inspiration from the affection dynamics, we develop an affection-based motion control strategy for the robot so that the robot can dynamically adjust its affective expressions with task situations. We develop a comprehensive evaluation scheme to evaluate HRI and assembly performance in two different conditions of the robot: (i) the robot displays affections in its face dynamically with assembly task situations, (ii) the robot does not display affection. The results show that the motion control of the robot with dynamic affective expressions produce significantly better HRI and assembly performance than that produced by the motion control of the robot with no affective expression.

Abstract:
The present study compared to the three perceptional conditions of tactile affection−tactile tactility, visual tactility, and visuo-tactile affections−using psychological evaluation and psychophysiological methods. A comparative study was performed to fine out the differences of psychological and psychophysiological tactile perception according to the conditions of tactile perception. Furthermore, it also aims to find out the important fabric factor for tactile affection. Through the previous study, we found the fabric factors which influenced in tactile affection of fabrics: weave construction and fabric pattern. Total of six printed fabrics were developed by DTP method on naturally colored organic cotton fabrics as stimuli. Thirty participants were placed by randomized incomplete block design for the experiment. For measuring psychological affection, questionnaire was developed using a 9 points semantic differential scale. Electroencephalogram(EEG) was measured as a CNS response and electrocardiogram(ECG), skin conductance level(SCL), and photoplethysmography(PPG) were quantified as ANS responses. According to the results, perceptional condition had little effect on psychological and psychophysiological tactile perception. Significant effects on perceptional condition showed only on “showy-plain” affection and SCL response. Mostly, weave construction was more important fabric factor to perceive tactile affection than fabric pattern. However, the importance of fabric pattern also observed through the interaction effects.

In The 38th Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand. SAHANZ, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55939/a4010p4jpd.

Abstract:
Authentic public memorials did not appear in the Chinese public space until the late 19th century. As a result of Western influence, many war memorials were built during the Republic of China era (1912-1949). Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the government has invested much in developing public spaces. Also, the government placed many memorials in Chinese cities to shape collective memory and urban identity. The affection of solemnness, sacredness, and grandness is the main affection that most memorials are intended to embody, particularly those that commemorate famous people, the government’s achievement, and the deceased from natural disasters and wars. By taking the example of memorials built from 1942 to the present in Chongqing, China, this paper critically examines changes over time in the forms. In addition, taking the analysis result from memorial forms as a base and combining widely cited literature in Chinese and English, the paper further explores the negative impacts of the intensive focus of solemnness, sacredness, and grandness. This paper’s analysis identifies standard, persistent and symbolic features in Chinese memorials, despite the diverse landscape elements and advanced construction techniques. Key themes emerge from this research are solemnness, sacredness, and grandness. Also, it reveals the issues raised by the exclusive pursuit of these affections, including similar memorial forms, insufficient engagement of memorials, and the unitary research topics on memorials.

Abstract:
The analysis and implementation of modern treatments for the patients diagnosed with osteoporosis, degenerative rheumatic affections and peripheral circulatory disorders have become a healthy priority for the society. These treatments have the goal to raise the bone mineral density of the skeleton, reducing joints pain and inflammation while improving and maintaining joints function. This paper presents a conservative treatment of patients from Recovery Clinical Hospital of Felix Spa, diagnosed with degenerative and rheumatoid affections. The treatment is complex and involves balneal-physical-kinetic recovery therapy that must be periodical repeated at every six months to perform. Ankylosing spondylitis was been evaluated by BASFI-BASDAI scores, while the gonarthrosis with Artroflex by SF-36 of quality life scale and Lequesne index. In addition, a vibration treatment combined with balneal-conservative treatment was been proposed to reduce the therapy time and improved the quality live of patients. The vibration system comprises a vibration bed with adjusting control of signal by a digital frequency convertor, and a command panel system for measuring and processing of data. Because the vibration trial is in incipient experiment stage, it was been applied first on Wistar rats, due to increase the calcium mass of bones. The results of all treatments were emphasized the efficiency of balneal cure in rheumatic affections.

Suksawang, Wilasinee. Public response to the appearance of ecological landscape design : A case study of Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park. Chulalongkorn University, 2020. https://doi.org/10.58837/chula.res.2020.25.

Full text
Abstract:
The appearance of ecological landscape design often causes public dissatisfaction. Precedent texts and studies, especially in the landscape perception and design fields, reiterated the affection for the ‘picturesque’ and the ‘park-like’ landscape of most Americans, resulting in their resistance to the ‘messiness’ of ecological landscapes. This research, therefore, studied how Thais perceive and respond to the look of the landscape, investigating if the ‘picturesque’ and the ‘messiness’ play a role in their perception and appreciation of ecological urban park design in the country. The questionnaires were distributed to gather respondents’ notions of beautiful, natural, and ecologically sustainable landscapes as well as opinions on the ecological landscape design of Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park-a pioneer and epitome of ecological landscape design in Bangkok. Four groups of respondents included park users, affiliates of Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok residents, and landscape professionals. The analysis of 315 responses reveals the attachment to the ‘picturesque’ ideal and the ‘park-like’ landscape, as well as the disinclination for the ‘messiness’ and poor maintenance of most Thais. Also, the ‘picturesque’ conventions, ‘cues to care’ tactic, familiarity, and knowledge about nature and ecology seemed to involve in their perception of beautiful, natural, and ecologically sustainable landscapes. Based on these findings, the research suggests strategies for designing ecological urban public parks in Bangkok in order to achieve not only ecological function, but also aesthetic expression, with the ultimate goal of achieving public positive attitude toward, and widespread support for the ecological landscape projects in the city.

Abstract:
This case study engages with the journey of SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action), a public health non-profit organization founded in Mumbai in 1999. India has the distinction of being witness to a long history of efforts by public-spirited healthcare professionals. Alongside treatment, their work in public health has consistently involved giving due emphasis to prevention, reducing the excessive reliance on institutional-led public health delivery, moving towards community-based approaches and giving considerable attention to maternal and child health, the bedrock of any sound public health system. The efforts of SNEHA (which means “love” or “affection”) in developing, expanding and adapting this approach amongst some of the world’s largest and dense poor and low-income urban settlements in India constitutes an important part of this history. Started with little funding, in a little over two decades, it now oversees over Rs. 29 crores of funds; and its programs, which started as small pilot projects to gather evidence, have evolved into large interventions drawing in many individuals and institutions along the way. Public health, unlike many other spaces of developmental interventions, demands balancing affordability, quality care and credibility with little margin for error. The case engages with the ways in which intentional evolutions to its practice have allowed SNEHA to grow, in full public glare, in a rapidly urbanizing agglomeration. The case also offers an opportunity for learners to reflect on how SNEHA’s organizational culture of appreciative inquiry and its adoption of technology have enabled it to hold together a team of 500 staff and over 6,000 volunteers; and how community-based models can overcome the shortage of full-time medical professionals in a resource-constrained to deliver consistently high standards of care.

Martinez, Hector, Kylie Rochford, and Diane Bergeron. Helping You, Helping Me? The Mediating Role of Organizational Citizenship Behavior in the Relationship Between Psychological Capital and Social Network Positions. Center for Creative Leadership, 2025. https://doi.org/10.35613/ccl.2025.2061.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past few decades, there has been an increasing shift from focusing on what is wrong with humans and organizations (e.g., problems, maladaptive behavior) to focusing on what is right (e.g., strengths, human and organizational flourishing). In this positive vein, we investigated the explanatory role of organizational citizenship behavior (e.g., helping others, volunteering for tasks that help the group or organization, organizing events, speaking up with ideas) in examining the relationship between psychological capital and social network positions. Psychological capital is an individual’s positive psychological state of development and is composed of four positive psychological resources: self-efficacy, optimism, hope, and resilience (Luthans &amp; Youssef, 2004; Luthans &amp; Youssef-Morgan, 2017). Employees with high levels of psychological capital (PsyCap) believe they have control over their own success (efficacy, hope), expect good things to happen (optimism), and rebound more easily following failure (resilience). In other words, PsyCap represents an individual’s positive evaluation of circumstances and likelihood for success based on their mindset, drive and persistence (Luthans, Avolio, Avey &amp; Norman, 2007). Using social exchange theory, we hypothesized that higher PsyCap individuals, due to their greater citizenship behaviors (helping, speaking up), would be perceived as more attractive social exchange partners, thereby achieving greater social network centrality (i.e., having more relational connections in an organizational network). Network centrality is important because it is related to greater career success due to more access to the information, career sponsorship, and opportunities embedded within social networks. Our findings showed that those with higher PsyCap engaged in more workplace helping behaviors and more voice behaviors (i.e., speaking up, making suggestions). PsyCap was positively correlated with network centrality in the social support network (i.e., relationships based on camaraderie and affection), but not in the advice network (i.e., relationships based on information and assistance exchanges). Finally, helping (but not voice) behaviors mediated the relationship between PsyCap and network centrality across both types of social networks. See Figure 2 on page 4 for our supported empirical model. These insights suggest that fostering PsyCap can enhance an individual’s integration and influence within social support networks, with helping behavior playing a crucial explanatory role. Given the strong links between social network positions and important individual and organizational outcomes (e.g., greater access to the information, career sponsorship and opportunities embedded within social networks), understanding the factors that influence central network positions has implications for individual leaders and organizations. For leaders, higher PsyCap may result in greater network centrality because such individuals require fewer resources. For organizations, greater PsyCap may result in higher-performing teams and organizations – not only due to PsyCap but also to its positive relationship to citizenship behaviors (helping, voice), which research shows are related to greater organizational efficiency, profitability, productivity, and customer satisfaction. As such, leaders and organizations may want to invest in developing this malleable resource and assess the effectiveness of different PsyCap intervention strategies (see Table 4 for a summary). In sum, psychological capital is a source of competitive advantage – both for high PsyCap individuals as well as for the organizations employing them.
