Schulten, Emily. "Widowed Affections." TopSCHOLAR®, 2004. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/514.

Full text
Abstract:
In the manuscript I will complete, currently titled Widowed Affections, an array of emotions and experiences will be covered in a manner capable of serving each reader in their own way. This manuscript will follow through five sections: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Despair/Depression, and Acceptance. Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross is credited with these five stages, the stages of grief/coping with a loss. In this psychiatrist's book On Death and Dying copyrighted in 1969, she explores these five stages deemed necessary in order to get over loss in a healthy manner. These stages can be experienced in any order but are traditionally listed in this one. These stages are also suggested to be what goes on within a patient who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. It is for these reasons that it will be appropriate for a large audience to find it easy to reflect within a manuscript organized this way. In each of these sections, corresponding poems will appear to serve the reader with a feel for what will follow within that section. The five or six other poems in each section will relate to the inspirations of thought conjured by each stage of grief. While some relate more directly to this process, others allow for room to ponder in one's own manner life and loss. In addition, none of these works are set up in a way to limit or sentimentalize these emotions. Rather it is my goal that these works describe the stages in a manner different from the psychiatrist's standpoint or that of support books. Each poem should relate examples and images that may provoke response quite different from that of the usual outcries such as why me?, this can't be happening, what can I do to stop this? and how do I go on? Also important is that grief comes in different shapes and sizes. Loss may not be associated with death for everyone, nor is this a way in which this manuscript will be limited. The title of the manuscript is taken from a quote by James Martineau: "Grief is only the memory of widowed affections." Martineau was a 19th Century Unitarian minister and was principal at Manchester New College. This title represents the loneliness of one's struggle with grief, as well as the human weakness of the emotions that come with grief. My hope is that the works within the manuscript convey both of these aspects of grief in light of its five most notable outcomes: those of the five stages in Kubler-Ross's book. Most all of the works are free verse and vary in length as appropriate to the subject, situation or story of each. Some of these may get their message across in one stanza, while others utilize several to convey a plethora of images. Several have been previously published in small journals. Four of the poems in the manuscript will experiment with form. Two are sonnets, though neither of these uses the traditional patterns of the sonnet: Shakespearean, Petrarchan or Spenserian. Both will, however, use a rhyme scheme. The other two poems using form will be a sestina and a villanelle. The villanelle will be in loose iambic pentameter. One of the sonnets and the sestina, "Despair" and "Anger," respectively, will be poems corresponding with one of the five stages of the grief process. My goal is to compile this manuscript in a way that conveys the journey that the grieving process can take a person on, including how it can affect a grieving person's outside relationships. Without becoming saccharine or dismal, I hope that these feelings and images can impose upon the reader a sense of chaos within a grieving life/world.

Artist Statement I am an ardent artist. I am always creating, even in my sleep. The ideas, images, and visions awake me from my dreams. I have been creating in various media since I was a very small child. The materials beckoned that child to play, as a grown up I can’t resist it. I am driven to play, explore, and experience with my all emotions and senses. My work has revolved around the exploration of objects or obsessions of my affections. They give an insight to how I feel about love and being in love. They depict objects I want to have around me and can’t seem to live without. Many of the works are presented literally while others are a symbolic representation of my inner thoughts and desires.

Hordern, Joshua. "Political affections : a theological enquiry." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4486.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is a theological enquiry into the nature of human affections (or ‘emotions’), their role in morality and their significance for political relations. The argument builds critically on the work of cognitivist theorists of emotion, such as Martha Nussbaum, who oppose both rationalist disavowals of the reasonableness of emotion and empiricist fascination with physical sensation. Nussbaum holds that emotions’ intentional (object-directed), evaluative quality indicates a cognitive aptitude. Using the language of ‘affection’, the argument shows how this aptitude shapes individuals’ and communities’ interrelation with their diverse systems of valuation, the created, vindicated moral order and creation’s God. Drawing on phenomenological and spiritual approaches, the endurance of affection is accounted for through the connection of memory and affection while virtue is assigned a secondary place as a fragmentary and less reliable contributor to such endurance. Affections emerge as the beginnings of attracted understanding concerning the world as it appears, the world as it is and the world as it will be, recognitions of value which are open to intersubjective discussion and initiate moral reflection and deliberation. Jonathan Edwards’ account of affections is found epistemologically and ethically implausible but his doctrine of excellency is adopted to interpret the nature of affections’ endurance and eschatological participation in the moral order. With particular attention to joy, shame, anger and awe, the intersubjective, affective dimension of political life is then explored through consideration of certain institutions, practices and traditions of modern political societies, ancient Israel and the early church as represented in Luke and Acts. Affective wisdom within institutions of political representation and law are considered in light of secular and Christian political eschatologies. Findings from this discussion then guide a conversation between European ‘constitutional patriotism’ and British conservatism which explores the connection between affections and locality. An account of national identity is given which takes localised affective understanding seriously yet relativises it in light of the transnational affective understandings which stem both from the international political system and from Christian faith. Finally, the role of churches’ affections within modern political society are discussed. Resources from the Lutheran tradition are utilised to examine the political significance of churches’ joyful praise of the crucified, risen Jesus Christ.

Rican, Stéphanie. "Géographie des affections respiratoires en France." Paris 10, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA100166.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Our social world is increasingly chaotic. Perhaps there has always been chaos; but our increasingly globalized landscape and information economy seems to place chaos on the frontlines—as videos of military strikes in Iraq, or mundane narratives about making it through another day are available for consumption at any time. Our social world produces. The question: What to do with it all? This dissertation explores the concept of affect, using a collage methodology. To conduct an exploration of affect, which “transpires within and across the subtlest of shuttling intensities” (Seigworth and Gregg 2), this dissertation both explores and performs collage; taking collage as both an artifact for investigation using affect theory, as well as a methodological approach participating in the creation of affect theory. As a result of this commitment, the reader is invited to enter this document in any order they wish—reading directly through, or skipping around chapters as it suits them. As a method, collage operates through placing at least two different things next to each other, and then looking for similarities and differences. Each chapter explores differences by juxtaposing artifacts selected because of a similarity that they shared. Spatial (Harvey Butchart and the Havasupai Native Americans), methodological (the It Gets Better project and Ray Johnson), temporal (September 11, 2001 and September 11, 1973), or praxis-based (Chelsea Manning and Aaron Swartz) similarities guided the juxtaposition of artifacts within each chapter. In addition, each chapter explores a distinct version of affect theory to add to the collage created within and throughout this dissertation. Each chapter is a canyon, collected within the grand canyon of the dissertation as a whole. Ultimately, this dissertation is guided by both academic and artistic impulses. I seek to explore and produce affect theory through deploying the methodology of collage. Drawn to moments that often escape rational interrogation, this dissertation invokes echoes as evidence in order to mobilize a system of resonance through juxtaposition that realizes the power of collage: Establishing interpretive frames that refuse to be finished or fixed. Through the performance of collage methodology, this dissertation seeks to implicitly argue for rhizomatic knowledge systems as a method of resistance to structures of oppression via an aesthetic mobilization of collage.

Farrell, Jennifer Heather. "Ornament and the affections in the opera arias of George Frideric Handel." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2470.

Full text
Abstract:
The performance of opera arias composed by George Frideric Handel in our modern day is complicated by the necessity of including improvised embellishments, which were a standard component of the eighteenth-century genre of opera seria. Furthermore, discussions concerning the concepts of historical authenticity and performance practice muddle the issue of preparing Handel's music for presentation. In recent years scholars have prepared ornamented versions of select Handel arias in consultation with eighteenth-century performance practice treatises and other contemporary materials that provide considerable insight into the purpose and execution of ornamentation in performances Handel himself oversaw. What remains relatively unexplored, however, is the relationship between eighteenth-century embellishments and the Baroque affections, or passions. The affections, or passions, were rationalized emotional states derived from the Greek and Latin doctrines of rhetoric and oratory which Baroque composers sought to evoke and express in their music. This study explores the correlation of Baroque affections with ornaments as a legitimate approach to the composition of embellishments for Handel's opera arias. The tradition of rhetoric, the conventions of late Baroque Italian opera seria as a form, and the practice of ornamentation as an integral part of these conventions are examined. The study also provides a survey of eighteenth-century literature concerning the relationship of the musical representation of affects and ornamentation. Lastly, a review of Handel's operatic career and of the plots of the Agrippina, Rinaldo and Rodelinda will provide a context for the preparation of "affective" ornamented versions of six arias from these operas. In closing, a brief discussion of the early music movement and of the debates surrounding the use of the term "authentic" in relation to historic performance practices will illuminate the relevance of the relationship between affect and ornament to twenty-first century performances.

This project intends to broaden the understanding of site by putting an emphasis on social, affectional and relational conditions. Hoping to begin a discourse on what existing values we as architects and developers bring with us into the future when proposing a design. This is achieved by the development and proposal of a methodology for uncovering, documenting and understanding how a community and its inhabitants relate to a specific place. The project aims to bring the question of social, affectional and relational site analysis to the surface, creating a forum for discussions of methodology and architectural approach relevant to all places going through substantial change. This is facilitated through the production of a workshop-series and an attempted interpretation of its rendered results through application in a drawn proposal for the site.

Abstract:

In 1888, Mobile city officials created a district where prostitution was legally tolerated. This thesis explores the influence of Mobile’s development on the rise of prostitution leading to the creation of the restricted district, including the French policy of importing women and prostitutes to build the colony, the city’s role as a military post during French, British and Spanish colonization, its prosperity during the antebellum period as a major cotton exporter, and its role as a military headquarters during the Civil War. In response to Mobile’s growing number of prostitutes and the national trend of segregating the “necessary evil” from daily life, Mobile created its restricted district. Over the next thirty years, the district served as a temporary home for hundreds of young, single, and childless southern women. Many of these women left prostitution after they married, moved with family, or found other means of support. In general, Mobilians supported the segregation of prostitution. The district was only closed after it interfered with the potential business from military contracts during World War One. An online exhibit was created as the public history component of this thesis to teach the public about the development of prostitution in Mobile, the geographic and demographic characteristics of the restricted district, and about the women who worked within it.

Abstract:
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are characterized by a dysfunction of the intestinal epithelium and a dysregulation of the immune system balance. The inflammation underlying IBD could be triggered and/or exacerbated by danger signals such as nucleotides. The nucleotides activate P2 receptors and their level is modulated by ectonucleotidases which include members of the ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolases (E-NTPDases) family. We identified the last member of this family of enzymes, the NTPDase8. We originally found its expression in the intestine at the RNA level. In this work, we demonstrate that NTPDase8 is expressed at the apical surface of intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) in the colon. Our results indicate that NTPDase8 is a key protector of intestinal inflammation by regulating the activation of P2Y6 receptor as the administration of the enzyme protects totally from the intestinal inflammation. In agreement, the deletion of NTPDase8 gene leads to a dramatic increase of inflammation is a murine model of colitis. The second aspect addressed in my thesis is the regulatory role of the P2Y6 receptor in intestinal inflammation. We found that this receptor expressed on IEC is pro-inflammatory and that blocking it pharmacologically prevented the intestinal inflammation triggered in a colitis model. We have also demonstrated that the P2Y6 receptor plays a key role in regulating the activity of other nucleotide receptors in vitro, which influences the homeostasis of intestinal epithelial cells. Our work deciphers the importance of nucleotide signaling in the pathogenesis of experimental colitis and highlights properties that could be applied to other gastrointestinal disorders. In extension, these data suggest that NTPDase8-P2Y6 axis could be a therapeutic target in the treatment of IBD.

Abstract:
Through recent technological advances, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and high-frequency ultrasound (US) have provided new methods for diagnosing early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and therefore, managing patients. The purpose of my work was threefold: 1. To precise the MR features of metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in early RA and to compare MR imaging involvement of MTP joints with that of the hands. Involvement of MTP joints is a classical feature of early RA and can precede involvement of the hands. Until now, there was no relevant reports in the literature about the MR imaging characteristics of the forefeet in early RA. 2. To assess the diagnostic value of MR imaging in patients who present with inflammatory polyarthralgia of the hands. In such a case, diagnosing early RA can be difficult. Moreover, other diagnoses such as systemic lupus erythematosus and primary Sjogren syndrome have to be considered by the clinician. The diagnostic value of MR imaging in differentiating patients with true RA from those with systemic lupus erythematosus and primary Sjogren syndrome was not yet evaluated. 3. To define normal criteria regarding metacacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint anatomy with high-resolution US. Recent technological advances in the field of US have been responsible for great interest. However, the normal anatomy of MCP joints remained unclear. My results are the following: 1. Except the fact that intermetatarsal and submetatarsal bursitis is a common MR finding (63% of cases), MR imaging involvement of MTP joints in patients with early RA is similar to that of hand joints. There is no differences between MCP and MTP joints in terms of bone erosions. When MR evaluation of the hands does not help identify early RA, further evaluation of the MTP joints may be helpful. 2. Except for subchondral edema (which is more frequent within the MCP joints in patients with early RA), it may be impossible to differentiate patients with early RA from those with systemic lupus erythematosus and primary Sjogren syndrome. 3. High-frequency US provides detailed and reliable assessment of MCP joints. Quantitative data related to synovial structures are also reported. These works enabled us to better precise MR and US features of early RA. They show our collaboration with the Rheumatology and Internal Medicine departments as well as the Anatomic department of our Medicine Faculty. We also collaborate with the Heudiasyc laboratory (UMR CNRS 6599) in order to develop a semiautomatic recognition of RA lesions (ie, synovitis and bone erosions)

Jozani, Niloufar. Paris 10, 1991. http://www.theses.fr/1991PA100040.

Abstract:
In this work the skin is regarded as the human body's envelope. The skin diseases enter within a whole range of concepts pertaining to the diseases in general. Notions such as "clean" and "dirty", "beautiful" and "ugly", "normal" and "abnormal" have also been dealt with. The nature of diseases acknowledged by the interviewees (contacted in 1983 and 1986 in Tehran) to be skin diseases and which go far beyond those indexed by the bio-medicine, has made it imperative to give a definition of the skin diseases in the Iranian popular medicine. This definition is based on the importance of one's "appearance". Throughout this research, much emphasis has been given to the efforts made to protect the "appearance", to improve one's image and to attain some kind of "normality". The diseases are, therefore introduced in several categories. Each consists of diseases with a number of characteristics which lead to the diseases being perceived in a different way than those contained in other categories. Each disease has been studied from both nosological and etiological viewpoints. The various treatments of symbolic or empirical nature as well as the popular beliefs concerning each have also been described. Another part has been devoted to the "anatomy" with a rapid sketch of the body as ideally desired or the "normal" condition to be attained. It seeks to explain and clarify why certain treatment or adjustment of bodily features have been necessary

Abstract:

Gao, Shan. "The Beauty of Nature As a Foundation for Environmental Ethics: China and the West." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2012. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc115080/.

Abstract:
My dissertation aims at constructing an environmental ethics theory based on environmental aesthetics in order to advocate and promote environmentally sustainable practices, policies, and lifestyles. I attempt to construct an integrated environmental aesthetics in order to inspire people’s feelings of love towards nature and motivate them to protect it. In order to achieve this goal, I first examine the philosophical understanding and aesthetic appreciation of nature from philosophical traditions of China, which have an impact on the general public’s attitude towards nature. in chapter one of my dissertation, I point out that nature is viewed as an organic system which is always in a self-generating process of production and reproduction of life. the metaphysical foundation for this perspective of nature is ch’i. Therefore the aesthetic appreciation of nature in China is also the aesthetic appreciation of ch’i. with regard to the concept of ch’i, I focus on the following three questions: (1) what are the objective and aesthetic features of ch’i? (2) How do the Chinese appreciate aesthetic features of ch’i? (3) Why the objective features of ch’i are regarded as the objects of aesthetic appreciation? I argue that the Chinese appreciate the aesthetic features of ch’i by using intellectual intuition and that empathy is the reason why the objective features of ch’i are considered to be aesthetic features. in Chapter 2, I explain in detail the two aesthetic categories for aesthetic appreciation of nature in two major philosophical schools in China: emptiness and creativity. in Chapter 3, I examine the philosophical foundations for aesthetic appreciation of nature in the West. I first investigate the influence of traditional Western philosophy on the perceptions of nature. I argue that traditional Western philosophical thinking doesn’t support aesthetic appreciation of nature. I point out that aesthetic appreciation of nature started from eighteenth century in the West. I examine Kant’s aesthetic categories of beauty and sublime in his appreciation of nature. in contemporary world, I focus on the Allen Carlson’s positive aesthetics and Arnold Berleant’s engagement model to appreciate the beauty of environment. in Chapter 4, I evaluate the theories of aesthetic appreciation of nature in the West and China and attempt to construct an integrated theory of aesthetic appreciation of nature. the key point of this theory is to establish a caring relationship with nature based on aesthetic appreciation of nature and active participation in the beauty of it. This relationship will motivate people to protect nature and also contribute to human happiness.

The focus is to explore the power of the relationships established among these entities, in the public space, when they meet each other and their homes through art. The goal is to affirm the existence and permanence of dogs on the streets and evoke the production of new feelings and sensitive connections between humans and them. The exhaustion of the thought about some prevailing notions on the distinctions among entities, and also the opening to the sensations and affections evoked when dogs and humans meet each other, on the streets, through art and words, serve to the questioning of the relationships between them and their homes, and also to a resizing effort on those relations, enabling the vision of the stray dogs status as beyond the categories of abandonment and suffering. The methodology is the cartography, as proposed by Gilles Deleuze e Félix Guattari, which takes in the experimentation of the thinking, trying to realize the dynamics, fluxes and intensities of the objects and assuming that the thinking and the knowledge production starts always from multiple connections. In the field of the theory, we performed a bibliographic research on contemporary authors of anthropology, philosophy, psychoanalysis and the arts as a way to resume and shuffle some concepts and also make other means and viewpoints possible for the relationships among entities. In the field of the praxis, the fieldwork involved some walking with the stray dogs in the city of Sorocaba. We also produced some narratives taking the fieldwork as inspirations, and some wheat-paste urban interventions, both as a way to create powerful encounters between humans and dogs on the streets where they come across to each other.

Full text
Abstract:
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cellular “fragments” actively released in all biological fluids. They are transported through body circulation and transmit their bioactive content to remote recipient cells. Milk is the biological fluid most enriched in EVs and these encapsulate several bioactive elements with anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects and reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in vivo. During my thesis, I explored the diversity of EVs present in commercial bovine milk and studied their biological activities in the context of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The results I obtained demonstrate the existence of several EV subsets in commercial bovine milk that I could discriminate using sodium citrate for their isolation. I found these EVs can survive during in-vitro digestion and protect their bioactive content, including microRNAs. After detailing the different microRNAs and proteins encapsulated in these EVs, I found specific markers for certain populations of milk EVs. I also reported the transfer of vesicular bovine miR-223 to human cells in vitro and its biological activity on the expression of a reporter gene. I then explored the biological activities of milk EVs in a mouse model of DSS-induced colitis. The oral intake of milk EVs decreased the symptoms of the disease, restored part of the intestinal microbiota, restored the intestinal barrier and replenished mucin levels. Also, different populations of milk EVs differentially modulated inflammation in the colon, notably by regulating the level of certain IBD-associated microRNAs. Milk therefore contains different EV subsets with different biological activities capable of modulating inflammation and the development of digestive pathologies. Studying the mechanisms underlying their bioactivity could impact the management of inflammatory diseases, improve milk formulations for newborns, and be of importance to public health and industrial milk processing.

Abstract:
This study politicizes the mixed relationship in Israeli-Palestinian literature. I examine Arab-Jewish and interethnic Jewish intimacy in works by Palestinian national poet Mahmoud Darwish, canonical Israeli novelist A. B. Yehoshua, select anthologized Anglophone and translated Palestinian and Israeli poetry, and Israeli feminist writer Orly Castel-Bloom. I also examine the material cultural discourses issuing from Israel’s textile industry, in which Arabs and Jews interact. Drawing from the methodology of twentieth-century Brazilian miscegenation theorist Gilberto Freyre, I argue that mixed intimacies in the Israeli-Palestinian imaginary represent a desire to restructure a hegemonic public sphere in the same way Freyre’s Brazilian mestizo was meant to rhetorically undermine what he deemed a Western cult of uniformity. This project constitutes a threefold contribution. I offer one of the few postcolonial perspectives on Israeli literature, as it remains underrepresented in the field in comparison to its Palestinian counterparts. I also present the first sustained critique of the hetero relationship and the figure of the hybrid in Israeli-Palestinian literature, especially as I focus on its representation for political options rather than its aesthetic intrigue. Finally, I reexamine and apply Gilberto Freyre in a way that excavates him from critical interment and advocates for his global relevance.

Abstract:
This study has the objective of problematize the concept of autonomy on the micropolitics of the living encounters of mental health devices on SUS (Unified Health System). The aim is to give visibility and readability for the health manufacturing that affirms the singularity of existential networks among the users of the psychosocial attention network, employing the concept of autonomy as analytic criteria. This way of addressing the problem restores the importance of the creative characteristic of the antimanicomial movement on the practices and knowledges of mental health work organization that seeks to affirm the user as a valid agent in his life management. The concept of autonomy employed in this research comes from the intersection of the works of Maturana and Varela which considers that the biological life occurs on an autonomic manner, self-referential and autopoietic and Espinosa, philosopher that pondered about the ethic in which life movement happens by the affect and be affected, allowing the singularization of the ways of being. Further than those intellectuals, this paper anchors its assumptions on the works of Deleuze, Guatarri and Rolnik, especially which refers to the subsides of the cartographic research experience. This work comes as a result of the mixing of theory and field research promoted inside the mental health devices

Abstract:
This dissertation---"The Necessity of Affections: Shakespeare and the Politics of the Passions"---is a contribution to an important and interesting aspect of early modern thought. It examines the role of the passions or emotions in Shakespearean tragedy and in early modern politics. Shakespeare can be seen to share a perspective on tragedy and political thought with a number of other writers, some of whom were his contemporaries, and some of whom---like Thucydides and Tacitus---were classical writers. What these figures, here called 'politic historians,' have in common is an interest in using the passions as an explanatory category to reveal the states of mind of tyrants, princes and also other agents, including manipulative Machiavellians. Shakespeare's use of this politics of the passions is shown to be more acute and insightful than the rival treatments given by Stoicism, Hobbes and Machiavelli, in terms of explaining motives, agency and action. It is also argued that an understanding of the passions tells us something about tragedy, necessity and chance: namely, the need for realism about the dangers posed by those who seek to fashion or shape our minds. However, this dissertation proposes that this political realism does not go so far as to become the cynicism of realpolitik. A discussion of a number of important passages and themes in the tragedies---in particular, Hamlet, Macbeth and Coriolanus---shows how the notion of a rich and vividly articulated self plays a significant role in Shakespearean tragedy.

Dash, Suzanne. "Examining systematic information processing as a mechanism of preseverative worry." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2013. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/45214/.

Full text
Abstract:
The mechanisms accounting for how negative mood, intolerance of uncertainty (IU), and low problem-solving confidence (PSC) increase worrying are poorly understood. One possibility is that these variables result in a detailed, analytical, and cognitively demanding form of information processing, known as systematic processing. This thesis examines whether worry promoters (negative mood, IU, and low PSC) increase an individual's likelihood of deploying systematic processing. Furthermore, the impact of these variables on threat perception and coping beliefs – factors affecting both worry and systematic processing – is explored. Six studies were conducted. The first five utilised experimental manipulations of mood, IU and PSC, whilst the sixth used questionnaires. Systematic processing deployment was indexed by sufficiency threshold measures (confidence that processing goals are satisfactorily accomplished) and a questionnaire. Participants induced into a negative mood had raised sufficiency thresholds; they were more likely to deploy systematic processing High IU and low PSC manipulations did not cause an increase in the likelihood of using systematic processing, but these variables correlated with an increased likelihood of deploying systematic processing Only negative mood correlated with increased threat perception when regression analyses were conducted controlling for each of the worry promoters All three worry promoters correlated with decreased threat coping beliefs A small negative correlation was found between worry and systematic processing PSC showed some construct overlap with systematic processing Consequently, negative mood states may encourage individuals to systematically process threats that they perceive. But worry is also defined by IU and low PSC, factors which diminish self-efficacy appraisals in the form of coping beliefs. These low coping beliefs may serve to dissuade the individual from typically deploying cognitively demanding systematic processing. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of the role of systematic processing as a mechanism of perseverative worry.
