Abstract:
Existing computational theories of collaboration explain some of the important concepts underlying collaboration, e.g., the collaborators' commitments and communication. However, the underlying processes required to dynamically maintain the elements of the collaboration structure are largely unexplained. Our main insight is that in many collaborative situations acknowledging or ignoring a collaborator's affective state can facilitate or impede the progress of the collaboration. This implies that collaborative agents need to employ affect-related processes that (1) use the collaboration structu

Abstract:
The studies reported here were intended to examine how affective and motivational factors influence attentional processing of goal objects, such as food, by exploiting modified versions of an Emotional Blink of Attention (EBA) task originally reported by Piech, Pastorino & Zald (2010). Attentional capture by food distractors presented within a rapid serial visual stream (RSVP) was measured by the extent to which they induced an attentional blink and prevented the correct identification of a subsequently presented, specific visual target. Initially, we explored temporal changes in attention to

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the psychological underpinnings of citizens’ political judgements in Turkey. Drawing upon political psychology studies, it focuses on the cognitive, affective and motivational components of political behaviour and investigates the role that ideological inclinations, value-orientations, emotions and sophistication play in shaping individual-based political decisions. By taking account of the electoral stronghold of the AK Party - whose roots are traced to its pro-Islamist agenda - in combination with the recent authoritarian turn in the country, the examination sheds li

The present Doctoral Thesis focuses on the study of the sigma-1 receptor (σ1R) in the field of pain. This research has been a part of the preclinical σ1R project focusing on drug discovery of σ1R ligands for the treatment of pain at the pharmaceutical company ESTEVE. The overall purpose of this Doctoral Thesis was to explore the role of σ1R in the sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational components of pain. To this end, acetic acid-induced visceral pain and partial sciatic nerve ligation in mice were used to model an acute and chronic pain state, respectively. The sensory discriminati

<p>Biological drives such as hunger, thirst, and sexual reproduction are potent motivators of behavior. Extrinsic rewards in the environment (i.e. food, drink, money) are also important behavioral and cognitive motivators. In addition to the relevance of an extrinsic reward in meeting the needs of biological drives, an individual’s sensitivity to the physiological state of their body (interoceptive awareness) would also be expected to mediate motivation for these extrinsic primary rewards (i.e. food, drink). In every list of the top performing firms each year, family firms never fail to fall out of ranks. Sustaining these firms are generations of family firm successors. But because of the private nature of family firms, little is known about their internal operations. This is the reason why pinpointing the reasons behind the success and failure of family firms remains very speculative. This research aimed to study family business succession using successors as the vantage
