Abstract:
In this brief commentary, I highlight the remarkable properties of antibodies (also known as immunoglobulins) revealed by more than 100 years of biomedical research. Since antibodies can be elicited through one or another means against almost any molecule or macromolecule, the universe of antibodies represents a sort of molecular mirror for the universe of molecules that make life possible. Consequently, as recounted below, antibodies play a role in almost every aspect of medicine and biomedical research.

Abstract:
The article attempts to reconstruct the logical space within which, at the beginning of Hegel?s Logic, ?being? and ?nothing? are entitled to emerge and receive their names. In German Idealism, the concept of ?being? is linked to the form of a proposition; Fichte grounds a new truth-value on the absolute thesis of the ?thetical judgement?. And the article?s first thesis claims that Hegel couldn?t have placed ?being? at the beginning of this great system, if the ground of its logical space had not been laid out by precisely those shifts of German Idealism that posited the ontological function of the judgement. At the same time, the abstract negation, the absence of a relation and sufficient reason between ?being? and ?nothing?, reveals a structure of an irreducibly dual beginning. The logical background of this original duality could be constituted by the invention of the ?transcendental inter-subjectivity? in German Idealism, manifested, for instance, in Hegel?s life-and-death struggle of two self-consciousnesses. The second thesis therefore suggests that ?being? and ?nothing? are elements of the logical space, established in concreto in a social situation of (at least) two subjects one of whom poses an affirmative statement and the other negates it abstractly. From here, one could draw out the coordinates of a sphere by the name of ?public? whose structure is defined by the invalidation of two basic laws of thought, the law of non-contradiction and the principle of sufficient reason. The article shows how only the statements capable of absorbing negation, of sustaining a co-existence of affirmation and its symmetrical, abstract negation, can climb the ladder of public perceptibility and social impact.

Abstract:
In this study, we examined associations among perceived discrimination, ethnic identity dimensions (exploration, resolution, affirmation), and psychological well-being (self-esteem, life satisfaction, flourishing) among 156 Arab Americans. Multiple moderated regression analyses revealed that perceived discrimination was negatively associated, and ethnic identity resolution and affirmation were positively associated, with psychological well-being. Ethnic identity affirmation moderated the association between perceived discrimination and flourishing by buffering the negative effect of perceived discrimination. Ethnic identity resolution and exploration did not moderate the associations between perceived discrimination and psychological well-being. Affirmation both promoted and protected well-being, resolution promoted well-being, and exploration was not associated with promoting or protecting well-being. We discuss implications to help Arab American clients develop and capitalize on their ethnic identity, promote their well-being, and buffer against perceived discrimination.

Abstract:
The article presents a strict interpenetration of scientific discourse and literary fiction on the example of Zolaʼs La Joie de vivre. The coexistence of these discourses is part of the poetics of ambiguity, which is characteristic of the weave of literature and science, where Science opposes Doubt. The purpose of the article is to reflect on the relationship between Experience (everyday life) and Experience (scientific). This conceptual opposition is embodied in a pair of main characters: Pauline and Lazare, equipped with a different attitude to reality and science. She learns human physiology by experiencing changes in her maturing body, which appears to her as a complex, but full of secrets, beautiful machinery. He lives by fearing the body and seeing it as the source of death. He wants to defeat death by coming up with experimental designs that are supposed to make him great and bring immortality. His failures lead him to Doubt and negation of science. Zola decides nothing balancing between knowledge and doubt, affirmation of life and the inevitability of death.

Abstract:
Given the salience of sibling relationships for Mexican American individuals, we examined the role of sibling support in the associations between discrimination, ethnic identity (EI), and the adjustment of Mexican American college students ( N = 171, 80.7% female, Mage = 21.6 years). Findings revealed that under conditions of high sibling support, discrimination was positively associated with EI resolution, which, in turn, was positively associated with self-esteem. Under conditions of low sibling support, discrimination was negatively associated with EI affirmation, which, in turn, was positively associated with self-esteem. Under conditions of low sibling support, there was a negative association between discrimination and EI affirmation, which, in turn, was negatively associated with depressive symptoms. These findings highlight the processes by which discrimination is associated with adjustment and the protective role of sibling support for Mexican American college students experiencing discrimination.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the concept of God according to Sunan Bonang’s view in his works, namely Primbon Bonang and Suluk Wujil. This article concludes that the two books are a compendium of Sunan Bonang’s Sufism and his spiritual journey during his life. Sunan Bonang explains that the first step that must be done by the sālik before embarking on a spiritual journey is trying to know himself and multiply wirid and zikir. Sunan Bonang’s type of sufism can be categorized Sunnī Sufism, which rejects the concept of Waḥdat al-Wujūd. Alternatively, he proposes a new concept called “Padudoning Kawula Gusti”, which means that human is not God and God is not human; both cannot be unified. To him, God is the transcendent and immanent One with several limitations. The unity of God is explained by him through the sentence of lā Ilāh illā Allāh, which means there is no god but Allah. The sentence is started with nafy (negation) “there is no god” then continued with the phrase ithbāt (affirmation) “but Allah”, which means that there is only One God in the universe.

Abstract:
In this paper, I further develop Rodolfo Kusch's concept of ‘negation’. I argue that it is an affirmative tool that enables us to sense and feel the other sides or domains of what we call reality and allows us to approach a plateau negated as a horizon of possibilities for conviviality and coexistence. Kusch's concept of negation brings forth an image of the emotions as being intimately interconnected to the values and ethos that form the basis of our behaviours. This paper also argues that Kush's concept of negation must be considered together with Kusch's development of ‘estar’ as a philosophical concept which underpins ‘América profunda’ ways of being in the world (or the multiverse). Finally, I propose that this ‘estar’ requires a ‘corazonar’ of our ways of bringing forth ourselves and our territories to life.

Thesis, Paris 1, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA010616.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis answers the question of life and further living by means of an exhaustive study of the concept of life in Arthur Schopenhauer's work. The principal concern is to demonstrate how Schopenhauer's metaphysics explains and justifies the phenomenon of life as well as the phenomenon of the persistence into the living. From the beginning the thesis establishes the ultimate and the metaphysical definition of life. Therefore the phenomenon of life is defined throughout as Will-to-live and then, as a phenomenon that seeks for life and further living. The thesis also shows how Schopenhauer's different approaches to the concept of life allow one to define life from a biological, philosophical, existential and a metaphorical perspective, but which is always related to the metaphysical definition of life. A study of the feeling of life reveals that what is always felt is the Will-to-live i.e. a life that always wants itself. Then life imposes itself into itself as a necessity to live, but also as a necessity to suffer because living always entails suffering. The negation of the will as a solution for existential pain and suffering is therefore criticized and reconsidered by an examination of all the existing tensions between the need of the phenomenon of life to affirm the will and the intention to negate the will in the subject looking for salvation. Subsequently it appears evident that by putting a blind and powerful Will-to-live into the heart of the subject Schopenhauer has rendered life into an almost incorruptible phenomenon: the affirmation of the will imposes itself as an imperative and so life imposes itself as a necessity to live

Pan, Yi-fan. "Sur l’écriture : la question de l’innommable chez Maurice Blanchot." Thesis, Paris 10, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA100106.

Full text
Abstract:
Is the writing of Maurice Blanchot determined by its philosophical thought or literary thought? Because of his dual roles, critic and novelist, Blanchot’s writing seems to display two possible thoughts: philosophical and literary thoughts. Philosophical thought is the aim on uncovering the truth. As a result, the writing becomes an implement to represent the dialectical thinking. Every chosen word must correspond to what the thinker stated so that the reader can follow it. Literary thought bases on transforming the original fact. A novelist asks the reader to look for the second meaning in his writing, in other words, what he wrote is not equal to what he meant. Thus what is written (by the author) is not yet written, but is waiting for written (by readers). There are two kinds of writing: one tells the truth, the other tells the lie. How can readers distinguish the reality from the writing of Blanchot? Can readers believe Blanchot’s literary criticism while he is also a novelist along with those rhetorical writing skills? One questing would Blanchot never confuse between his double roles. Accordingly, this thesis will discuss the indeterminacy within the writing of Maurice Blanchot

Ethnographic work in Morro do Bumba, a slum located in Viçoso Jardim, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Despite being initially motivated by an interest in the landslides that occurred in 2010, as well as in the actions of the State and the press coverage, the focus of the dissertation has changed as the research in the field progressed. Based upon political manifestations and everyday situations, this text aims to rethink if certain concepts and ideas used to think our society actually go as far as we believe them to do. Individual, risk, State, contravention, money and politics are some of the categories that in Morro do Bumba happen differently than it is usually expected by the official discourses. Living alongside the locals and observing, the ethnographer asks himself: where the State and the press see only necessity and misery, is it impossible to see also differences that resist to the civilizational processes that try to shape our society? When refusing certain kind of thoughts about the electoral process, when avoiding certain health, security and law institutions or when people choose spontaneity when some would expect precaution and see only noise, is it possible to notice the affirmation of a discourse?

The present thesis has as objective to assess the relationship on a subject that, in a first glance, has its strength in a negative procedure – the criticism –, with an idea that seems to be constituted by an entirely positive potency – the affirmation of life. Among Nietzsche's works, Thus spoke Zarathustra will stand out. This text holds, in a very remarkable way, the ideas of denial and affirmation. The significants "no" and "yes" are recurrent throughout the text, as well as the notions of destruction and creation, which, as we shall see, are related to denial and affirmation. The concepts of will of power and eternal return will be emphasized during the development of the text, due to its direct connection with the affirmation of life theme. However, we will show that these latest can also be read as critical concepts. Moreover, we will show that criticism goes beyond the negative registry, and as well that the nietzschean affirmation embodies types of denial.

Abstract:
Values as therapeutic Jocil processes and motivators: a systematic review. A systematic search revealed 19 papers pertaining to therapeutic use of values. Six reported significant positive correlations between values-based living and well-being. Twelve of the remaining 13 presented evidence that supported the use of valuesbased interventions to: enable the adaptive acceptance of distress (two), increase values clarity and values-based living (five of six), improve psychosocial/physical function (two), and increase tolerance of threats to self worth (three). Further research is required, particularly outside the populations of students and peopl'e with chronic health problems. A theoretical model is presented whereby values-based interventions may improve well-being through two compatible pathways: increasing values-based living and reducing psychological threat to self worth. Section two: Research report Values-based self-affirmation Jor young people who experience skin-related distress A multiple case studies approach was used to evaluate a values-based self-affirmation intervention using nomothetic measures, idiographic daily repeated measures and qualitative data. Participants comprised 11 young people with psychosocial distress self-attributed to their dermatological condition. Depression and anxiety reduced significantly at the group level (p < O.OS), and individual level (N=7). Skin-related frustration and restrictions reduced, whilst reported preoccupation and concealment increased. Qualitative data indicated increased values-based living and reduced skin-related threats to self-worth post-inte'rvention. Participants identified empathic discussion to be more important than self-affirmation. Skin-related distress in young people can be reduced using a simple intervention that could be implemented by nursing staff. Further research is required to clarify the active components and mechanisms of change.

Abstract:
Extant literature has provided evidence suggesting that ethnic minority individuals experiencing discrimination report poor mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and an overall lower sense of belongingness with the majority culture, but empirical research examining how ethnic identity affects this relationship is extremely scarce. The first goal of the current study was to replicate the results of previous studies demonstrating a strong relationship between discrimination and selected wellbeing indicators: meaning in life, American affirmation, depression, and life satisfaction. The second goal of the study was to examine a moderation model and two moderated moderation models that depict the relationships among adult attachment, the affective component of ethnic identity, exploration and commitment to ethnic identity, and wellbeing indicators. Data was collected from 206 students who were recruited from undergraduate psychology courses. Findings provided partial support to the direct effects of discrimination on various wellbeing indicators but did not support the moderating effect of ethnic identity. Additionally, adult attachment, ethnic identity, and discrimination were not found to significantly interact, but the relationship between discrimination, ethnic identity, and American affirmation was found to be significantly moderated by the affective component of ethnic identity. Discussion on the findings, limitations of the study, future research directions, and counseling implications are addressed.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to assess the role of the concepts of health and sickness in Nietzsche&rsquo
s philosophy. While doing this, our basic presupposition will be that these concepts owe their special place to their being the new criteria for Nietzsche&rsquo
s project of revaluation of all existing values. Nietzsche was philosophizing in the face of the crisis of 19th century Europe, that is, nihilism. According to him, Western traditional thought is based on an otherworldly oriented conception of life the values of which are nothing but a negation of life. Although these values had served man&rsquo
s justification of living for a long time, they reached their expiration by the &lsquo
death of god&rsquo
resulting from the materialistic tendency of the flourishing natural sciences of the 19th century. The &lsquo
death of god&rsquo
paved the way for a devaluation of once most valuable values, of which the most notable are &lsquo
good&rsquo
and &lsquo
bad&rsquo
. Thus, Nietzsche&rsquo
s project of revaluation needs new evaluative criteria as well, which is &lsquo
health&rsquo
and &lsquo
sickness&rsquo
. In this study, I will argue that, Nietzsche situates a physiological understanding of these concepts at the very heart of his revaluation and their somehow metaphorical application to culture and modern society is based on a physiological conception of them as well.

The present dissertation â entiteld Nietzsche: the passions as life affirmation e constructing of a ânew ethicsâ â aims at thinking of a ânew ethicsâ in Nietzscheâs philosophy, based upon his early writtings as well as on his lattest works. While developing this theme, we intend to consider, in a first moment, the notion of body as guide line and background of the analysis - taking it not as a dualistic opposition to the soul, but as a multiplicity of forces within an ethernal becoming, contributing towards a formation and transformation of living; then, after having considered the question of the inversion of Platonism, in line with the ideia of creation and yes-saying to life, we finally hope to point out a possible ânew ethicsâ in Nietzscheâs philosophy.

Abstract:
From the point of view of French discourse analysis (MAINGUENEAU, 2005), focusing on the concept of discourse genre (BAKHTIN, 2000), the object of this dissertation is to analyze real estate classified ads based on a corpus formed by real estate classified ads for sale, taken from O GLOBO newspaper, on the Sunday June 22nd, 2008 edition, from the supplementary section Morar Bem. The ads refer to all kinds of home real estate, located in Copacabana, in the City of Rio de Janeiro. The analysis of these classified ads highlighted some of their characteristics which led to concepts like description (ADAM, 1993), argumentation (CHARAUDEAU, 2009) and linguistic negation (DUCROT, 1987). Observing the text of these ads it is possible to notice that only a few of them show on their enunciation the presence of negation or absence, through the linguistic marking of no, without, absence or discharge. However, the analysis allowed us to identify other linguistic markings of affirmation which point to a lack of balance between affirmative and negative utterances in this case, negation is present in affirmation more frequently than the opposite. This affirmation was named polemical affirmation

Abstract:
This article addresses the problem of identifying relationship between the emotional manifestations of adolescents and young people and dominant values in their personality system in order to establish priorities in the acquisition of the components of the value orientation at the subjects. The age of adolescence is the period of social and emotional development, cognitive and emotional explosion, and psychic and value system formation. Personality formation takes place in the social environment through interrelation with parents, friends, and teachers in different life situations. Adolescents may experience positive and negative emotions of varying intensity. Emotional stability develops gradually through experiences, socialization, cognitive progress, self-knowledge and self-affirmation which are already being formed and are specific to young people. It is important to self-recognize and self-analyse by the subject of his/her own specific emotions, to determine the causes of their occurrence, to know how to regulate the negative ones. The role of emotions is enormous for the human being. The affective sphere is one of fundamental elements for: the fixation of externalized manifestations through the behavioural display of suitable emotions, shaping of attitudes, the development of beliefs and, therefore, values. These components are organized hierarchically, forming the content of value orientation or values orientation. The experimental study carried out with adolescent and young subjects consisted in determining the specificity of emotions and dominant values in adolescence and youth ages, highlighting the dynamics of emotional and value changes, and establishing the relationship between the studied variables. The experiment results provide us with the current information regarding dynamics of the relationship of emotions and values, which, therefore, allows to elaborate new ways of emotions knowing and regulating during adolescence age including youth one. These strategies can be applicable in educational institutions, ensuring by them well-being for all education actors. Well-being means not only feeling well inside, but also to be in well- being created conditions in the environment around us, favouring the wellbeing of all subjects.

Abstract:
We are witnesses and participants of Copernican changes in the world which result in major crises/challenges (economic, political, social, climate, demographic, migratory, MORAL) that significantly change “normal” circumstances. The law, as a large regulatory system, must find answers to these challenges. Primarily, these circumstances relate to (i) the pandemic - Corona 19, which requires ensuring economic development with a significant encroachment on human freedoms and rights; (ii) globalization, which fundamentally changes the concept of liberal capitalism as the most efficient system of production of goods and services and democracy as a desirable form of government; (iii) automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, and big data are changing the ways we work, live, communicate, and learn in a Copernican manner. The law should serve to shape the relationship between people in order to realize a life of love and freedom. This is done to the greatest extent through the constitutional engineering of selected institutions. The legal system focuses on institutions that have a raison d'etre in their mission, which is read as “ratio legis”, as a desirable normative and real action in the range of causal and teleological aspect. Crisis situations narrow social cohesion and weaken trust in institutions. It is imperative to seek constitutional engineering that finds a way out in autopoietic institutions in allopoietic environment. We believe that the most current definition of law is that = law is the negation of the negation of morality. It follows that morality is the most important category of social development. Legitimacy, and then legality, relies on morality. In other words, the rules of conduct must be highly correlated with morality - legitimacy - legality. What is legal follows the rules, what is lawful follows the moral substance and ethical permissibility. Therefore, only a fair and intelligent mastery of a highly professional and ethical teleological interpretation of law is a conditio sine qua non for overcoming current anomalies of social development. The juridical code of legal and illegal is a transformation of moral, legitimate and legal into YES, and immoral, illegitimate and illegal into NO. The future of education aims to generate a program for global action and a discussion on learning and knowledge for the future of humanity and the planet in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty and insecurity.

Abstract:
Some transgender women use estrogen as part of their hormone therapy for gender affirmation. Estrogen helps transgender women align their bodies with their female gender identity. Gender affirmation with hormone therapy has benefits such as improved quality of life and reduced depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. However, estrogen use in transgender women may have long-term risks to heart health.
