Full textThe thesis answers the question of life and further living by means of an exhaustive study of the concept of life in Arthur Schopenhauer's work. The principal concern is to demonstrate how Schopenhauer's metaphysics explains and justifies the phenomenon of life as well as the phenomenon of the persistence into the living. From the beginning the thesis establishes the ultimate and the metaphysical definition of life. Therefore the phenomenon of life is defined throughout as Will-to-live and then, as a phenomenon that seeks for life and further living. The thesis also shows how Schopenhauer's different approaches to the concept of life allow one to define life from a biological, philosophical, existential and a metaphorical perspective, but which is always related to the metaphysical definition of life. A study of the feeling of life reveals that what is always felt is the Will-to-live i.e. a life that always wants itself. Then life imposes itself into itself as a necessity to live, but also as a necessity to suffer because living always entails suffering. The negation of the will as a solution for existential pain and suffering is therefore criticized and reconsidered by an examination of all the existing tensions between the need of the phenomenon of life to affirm the will and the intention to negate the will in the subject looking for salvation. Subsequently it appears evident that by putting a blind and powerful Will-to-live into the heart of the subject Schopenhauer has rendered life into an almost incorruptible phenomenon: the affirmation of the will imposes itself as an imperative and so life imposes itself as a necessity to live

Full textIs the writing of Maurice Blanchot determined by its philosophical thought or literary thought? Because of his dual roles, critic and novelist, Blanchot’s writing seems to display two possible thoughts: philosophical and literary thoughts. Philosophical thought is the aim on uncovering the truth. As a result, the writing becomes an implement to represent the dialectical thinking. Every chosen word must correspond to what the thinker stated so that the reader can follow it. Literary thought bases on transforming the original fact. A novelist asks the reader to look for the second meaning in his writing, in other words, what he wrote is not equal to what he meant. Thus what is written (by the author) is not yet written, but is waiting for written (by readers). There are two kinds of writing: one tells the truth, the other tells the lie. How can readers distinguish the reality from the writing of Blanchot? Can readers believe Blanchot’s literary criticism while he is also a novelist along with those rhetorical writing skills? One questing would Blanchot never confuse between his double roles. Accordingly, this thesis will discuss the indeterminacy within the writing of Maurice Blanchot

Ethnographic work in Morro do Bumba, a slum located in Viçoso Jardim, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Despite being initially motivated by an interest in the landslides that occurred in 2010, as well as in the actions of the State and the press coverage, the focus of the dissertation has changed as the research in the field progressed. Based upon political manifestations and everyday situations, this text aims to rethink if certain concepts and ideas used to think our society actually go as far as we believe them to do. Individual, risk, State, contravention, money and politics are some of the categories that in Morro do Bumba happen differently than it is usually expected by the official discourses. Living alongside the locals and observing, the ethnographer asks himself: where the State and the press see only necessity and misery, is it impossible to see also differences that resist to the civilizational processes that try to shape our society? When refusing certain kind of thoughts about the electoral process, when avoiding certain health, security and law institutions or when people choose spontaneity when some would expect precaution and see only noise, is it possible to notice the affirmation of a discourse?

The present thesis has as objective to assess the relationship on a subject that, in a first glance, has its strength in a negative procedure – the criticism –, with an idea that seems to be constituted by an entirely positive potency – the affirmation of life. Among Nietzsche's works, Thus spoke Zarathustra will stand out. This text holds, in a very remarkable way, the ideas of denial and affirmation. The significants "no" and "yes" are recurrent throughout the text, as well as the notions of destruction and creation, which, as we shall see, are related to denial and affirmation. The concepts of will of power and eternal return will be emphasized during the development of the text, due to its direct connection with the affirmation of life theme. However, we will show that these latest can also be read as critical concepts. Moreover, we will show that criticism goes beyond the negative registry, and as well that the nietzschean affirmation embodies types of denial.

Full texts philosophy. While doing this, our basic presupposition will be that these concepts owe their special place to their being the new criteria for Nietzsche&rsquo
s project of revaluation of all existing values. Nietzsche was philosophizing in the face of the crisis of 19th century Europe, that is, nihilism. According to him, Western traditional thought is based on an otherworldly oriented conception of life the values of which are nothing but a negation of life. Although these values had served man&rsquo
s justification of living for a long time, they reached their expiration by the &lsquo
death of god&rsquo
resulting from the materialistic tendency of the flourishing natural sciences of the 19th century. The &lsquo
death of god&rsquo
paved the way for a devaluation of once most valuable values, of which the most notable are &lsquo
good&rsquo
and &lsquo
bad&rsquo
. Thus, Nietzsche&rsquo
s project of revaluation needs new evaluative criteria as well, which is &lsquo
health&rsquo
and &lsquo
sickness&rsquo
. In this study, I will argue that, Nietzsche situates a physiological understanding of these concepts at the very heart of his revaluation and their somehow metaphorical application to culture and modern society is based on a physiological conception of them as well.

The present dissertation â entiteld Nietzsche: the passions as life affirmation e constructing of a ânew ethicsâ â aims at thinking of a ânew ethicsâ in Nietzscheâs philosophy, based upon his early writtings as well as on his lattest works. While developing this theme, we intend to consider, in a first moment, the notion of body as guide line and background of the analysis - taking it not as a dualistic opposition to the soul, but as a multiplicity of forces within an ethernal becoming, contributing towards a formation and transformation of living; then, after having considered the question of the inversion of Platonism, in line with the ideia of creation and yes-saying to life, we finally hope to point out a possible ânew ethicsâ in Nietzscheâs philosophy.

Full textFrom the point of view of French discourse analysis (MAINGUENEAU, 2005), focusing on the concept of discourse genre (BAKHTIN, 2000), the object of this dissertation is to analyze real estate classified ads based on a corpus formed by real estate classified ads for sale, taken from O GLOBO newspaper, on the Sunday June 22nd, 2008 edition, from the supplementary section Morar Bem. The ads refer to all kinds of home real estate, located in Copacabana, in the City of Rio de Janeiro. The analysis of these classified ads highlighted some of their characteristics which led to concepts like description (ADAM, 1993), argumentation (CHARAUDEAU, 2009) and linguistic negation (DUCROT, 1987). Observing the text of these ads it is possible to notice that only a few of them show on their enunciation the presence of negation or absence, through the linguistic marking of no, without, absence or discharge. However, the analysis allowed us to identify other linguistic markings of affirmation which point to a lack of balance between affirmative and negative utterances in this case, negation is present in affirmation more frequently than the opposite. This affirmation was named polemical affirmation
