Jaffro, Laurent. Locke and Port-Royal on Affirmation, Negation, and Other Postures of the Mind. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815037.003.0011.

Abstract:
The chapter claims that in order to understand Locke’s doctrine of assent, his philosophy of mind needs to be seen in conjunction with his philosophy of language, which in turn gains from being compared with Port-Royal’s logic and grammar. It points out two conflicting facts in Locke’s account of affirmation and negation in the Essay. First, Locke entrusts affirmation and negation with the task of signifying both the assertion by which we manifest our assent to a proposition and the junction or separation of the ideas constituting the proposition. The other fact is that Locke accepts a great variety of ways of considering a proposition. This diversity of ‘postures’ is poorly expressed by the limited number of syncategorematic terms, ‘particles’. The first fact fosters a one-act view of the assent we give to propositions. The second opens the way to a multiple-act view.

Abstract:
In this chapter we focus on mobile-emotive rituals of affirmation and intensification. Loss can be viewed as a disruption in identity. Mobile media are used as a means to affirm the role that the deceased played in the bereaved person’s life. Mobile media are also used to intensify connections between people who share a common identity. The mobile phone itself serves as a linking object, in that the lost loved ones can seem as though they are still present. Mobile-emotive rituals are discussed as extensions of traditions and of self. This chapter draws on fieldwork in the United States to demonstrate the ways in which users utilize social and mobile media to express collective social identities and the significance of others.

Abstract:
'Earth Emotions' is an invitation to the reader to participate in the emergent global drama between the emotionally charged forces of creation and destruction. Both sets of emotions are needed for the survival and the flourishing of the species, however, we live in an epoch where the forces of destruction are overwhelming positive or creative emotions. The name for this period of human dominance is the 'Anthropocene'. The book promotes an antidote to the Anthropocene in the form of the 'Symbiocene', a future era where positive earth emotions will flourish. Through these two master concepts, both types of emotions are systematically examined in the context of nature and life. Starting with a recently defined negative earth emotion, 'solastalgia', the reader is taken on a psycho-terratic (psyche-earth) journey through all of the earth emotions and feelings in use in the public and academic literature. The book culminates in the affirmation of positive emotional relationships to the Earth for current and future generations. As a relentlessly optimistic manifesto for living in the future, this book addresses the emotional, cultural, ethical, political, spiritual and practical aspects of positive earth emotions and the defeat of those that are destructive of people and the planet.
