Abstract:
Today’s legal system of China has faced many significant changes. One of the often mentioned challenges concerns the appropriate management and handling of an abundance of new and complex disputes. Due to the popularity of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Western countries, it began to draw people’s attention when designing a Chinese dispute resolution policy. With this fact being known and considering China’s domestic political climates and the Chinese practice of using non-confrontational means to solve disputes, one circle of scholars suggested that court mediation (fayuantiaojie, 法院

Abstract:
Existing research on multilingual acquisition indicates that multilingual learners confront challenges not only in mastering new linguistic forms, but also in forming new identities, and especially when the languages concerned are socially and linguistically distant. This study shows that ethnic minority students in China (referred in particular as ‘ethnic multilingual learners’ or EMLs in this study) at universities can face more challenges than the ethnic majority, Han, when they choose to study English as their major subject. Abstract:
Many studies have reported changes in the infiltration properties of soils after deforestation, whereas studies on the effects of reforestation or afforestation are scarce. On a watershed scale, it is often assumed that planting trees will increase infiltration, reduce flooding, increase dry season river flows and decrease erosion. In China, despite massive government-promoted land conversion programs occurring over the last 11 years, there is insufficient research on changes in fundamental soil infiltration properties which underpin the premise that afforestation will improve important hydro

Abstract:
This is an anthropological study of peasant economy and culture, derived from field research on patterns of social organization and production of two ethnically different rural communities (Han and Mosuo) in northwest Yunnan, China. Its aim is to explore the local contexts for understanding the changes that recent economic reforms have brought to peasant life, and the cultural as well as ecological factors that constrain peasant economic activities. Current economic reforms have been accompanied by institutional changes, of which the most important for this research is the change in poli

Abstract:
This thesis presents a fundamental description of Prinmi, a little-known Tibeto-Burman language of southwestern China. It deals with all the core aspects of the language: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Major issues addressed in describing the language include: vowel lowering in Chapter 2; the suprasegmental system of Prinmi, which is identified as an accentual, or word-based, system (Chapter 3); the overlap between open lexical categories — verbs, nouns, and adjectives — in Chapter 4; compounding in Chapter 5; the fluid system of grammatical functions (Chapt
