Abstract:
ObjectivesTo determine whether specific injury measures were associated with team performance in the Australian Football League (AFL).Methods15 289 injuries caused players from 18 teams to miss 51 331 matches between 1997 and 2016. Data were aggregated to the team level. We analysed the associations among injury measures and team performance (reaching finals/playoffs and specific ladder/table position). Injury measures per team included: injury incidence, injury severity, injury burden, player match availability and percentage of the full player roster injured. We also weighted injury measures by five measures of player value.ResultsAFL teams’ injury burden and player match availability were associated with final table position (r2=0.03, p<0.05). Player value weighted injury burden was different between finalists and non-finalists (mean difference=−8, p<0.001) and explained 12% of the variation in the table position of teams (p<0.001). For a team, nine missed matches due to injury (burden weighted by a best and fairest player rating system) was associated with one lower table position. Player match availability weighted by player value was higher for finalists than non-finalists (mean difference=1.7, p<0.01) and explained 7% of the variation in the table position of teams (p<0.001).Discussion and potential implicationsThe impact of injury (burden weighted by best and fairest) explained up to 12% of the variation in final table position—this is particularly relevant to making/not making playoffs as well as home ground/travel advantages for those teams that make the one-game format of AFL playoffs (not home-away or best of seven format).

Abstract:
Purpose: To examine the association between preseason training variables and subsequent in-season performance in an elite Australian football team. Methods: Data from 41 elite male Australian footballers (mean [SD] age = 23.4 [3.1] y, height =188.4 [7.1] cm, and mass = 86.7 [7.9] kg) were collected from 1 Australian Football League (AFL) club. Preseason training data (external load, internal load, fitness testing, and session participation) were collected across the 17-wk preseason phase (6 and 11 wk post-Christmas). Champion Data© Player Rank (CDPR), coaches’ ratings, and round 1 selection were used as in-season performance measures. CDPR and coaches’ ratings were examined over the entire season, first half of the season, and the first 4 games. Both Pearson and partial (controlling for AFL age) correlations were calculated to assess if any associations existed between preseason training variables and in-season performance measures. A median split was also employed to differentiate between higher- and lower-performing players for each performance measure. Results: Preseason training activities appeared to have almost no association with performance measured across the entire season and the first half of the season. However, many preseason training variables were significantly linked with performance measured across the first 4 games. Preseason training variables that were measured post-Christmas were the most strongly associated with in-season performance measures. Specifically, total on-field session rating of perceived exertion post-Christmas, a measurement of internal load, displayed the greatest association with performance. Conclusion: Late preseason training (especially on-field match-specific training) is associated with better performance in the early season.

Abstract:
This study investigated the validity of the official Australian Football League Player Ratings system. It also aimed to determine the extent to which the distribution of points across the 13 rating subcategories could explain Australian Football League match outcome. Ratings were obtained for each player from Australian Football League matches played during the 2013–2016 seasons, along with the corresponding match outcome (Win/Loss and score margin). The values for each of the 13 subcategories that comprise the ratings were also obtained for the 2016 season. Total team rating scores were derived as an objective team outcome for each match. Percentage agreement and Pearson correlational analyses revealed that winning teams displayed a higher total team rating in 94.2% of matches and an association of r = 0.96 (95% confidence interval = 0.95–0.96) between match score margin and total team rating differential, respectively. A Partial Decision Tree (PART) analysis resulted in seven rules capable of determining the extent to which relative contributions of rating subcategories explain Win/Loss at an accuracy of 79.3%. These models support the validity of the Australian Football League Player Ratings system and its use as a pertinent system for objective player analyses in the Australian Football League.

Association football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world, resulting in a large economic interest from investors, team managers, and betting agencies. For this reason, a vast number of rating systems exists to assess the strength of football teams or individual players. Nevertheless, most of the existing approaches incorporate deficiencies, e. g., that they depend on subjective ratings from experts. The objective of this work was the development of a new rating system for determining the playing strength of football players. The Elo algorithm, which has established itself as an objective and adaptive rating system in numerous individual sports, has been expanded in accordance with the requirements of team sports. Matches from 16 different European domestic leagues, the UEFA Champions and Europa Leagues have been recorded, with more than 17 000 matches played in recent years, and 12 400 different players. The developed rating system produced promising results, when evaluating the matches based on its predictions. A high relevance of the created system results from the fact that only the associated match report is needed and thus—in relation to existing valuation models—significantly more football players can be assessed.

Abstract:
Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury has been a major cause of missed game time among Australian Football League (AFL) players. Return to play after ACL reconstruction is not always achieved, even among elite athletes. The rate of subsequent ACL injury in the AFL from 1990 to 2000 was high as compared with that of other elite sports. Purpose: To determine the rates of return to play and subsequent ACL injury after ACL reconstruction among AFL players from 1999 to 2013 and to explore factors associated with differing rates of return to play and subsequent ACL injury. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: A total of 158 AFL players who underwent ACL reconstruction were identified from a prospectively maintained registry of AFL player injuries. Further data were gathered from official playing statistics, surgical records, and structured phone interviews. Results: The rate of return to play after an initial ACL injury was 77% (121 of 158 players). Greater preinjury playing experience and earlier selection in the AFL draft were associated with higher rates of return to play. The rate of subsequent ACL injury to either knee was 30% (48 of 158 players) and was especially high among players aged <21 years (23 of 46 players, 50%). After subsequent ACL injury, 34 of 48 players (71%) returned to play. In primary ACL reconstruction, the use of Ligament Augmentation and Reconstruction System grafts resulted in a faster return to play ( P = .001) but had a higher risk of subsequent revision reconstruction (risk ratio = 2.8, P = .048). Family history of ACL injury was associated with an increased risk of subsequent contralateral ACL injury (risk ratio = 3.8, P = .002). Conclusion: Most AFL players who underwent ACL reconstruction returned to play at least 1 AFL match. The high rate of subsequent ACL injury among AFL players demonstrates the highly demanding nature of Australian football, particularly at the elite level. The risk factors for subsequent ACL injury should be considered carefully when treatment and rehabilitation decisions are made for these high-demand athletes.

Purpose:The understanding of the gap between Under 18 y (U18) and senior-level competition and the evolution of this gap in Australian Football lack a strong evidence base. Despite the multimillion dollars invested in recruitment, scientific research on successful transition is limited. No studies have compared individual players’ movement rate, game statistics and ball speed in U18 and senior competition of the Australian Football League across time. This project compared differences in player movement and ball speed between matches from senior AFL competitive matches and U18 players in the 2003 and 2009 seasons.Methods:TrakPerformance Software and Global Positioning System (GPS) technology were used to analyze the movement of players, ball speed and game statistics. ANOVA compared the two levels of competition over time.Results:Observed interactions for distance traveled per minute of play (P = .009), number of sprints per minute of play (P < .001), time spent at sprint speed in the game (P < .001), time on field (P < .001), and ball speed (P < .001) were found. Subsequent analysis identified increases in movement patterns in senior AFL competition in 2009 compared with the same level of competition in 2003 and U18 players in 2003 and 2009.Conclusions:Senior AFL players in 2009 were moving further, sprinting relatively more frequently, playing less time and playing at game speeds significantly greater than the same senior competition in 2003 as well as compared with both cohorts of U18 players.

Abstract:
Purpose: To examine the dose–response relationship between match-play high-speed running (HSR), very high-speed running (VHSR), and sprint (SPR) distances versus subsequent ratings of fatigue and soreness. Methods: Thirty-six outfield players competing in the professional National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL, United States) with a minimum of five 90-minute match observations were monitored during the 2016 and 2017 seasons (408 match observations, 11 [6]/player). HSR (≥3.47 m·s−1), VHSR (≥5.28 m·s−1), and SPR (≥6.25 m·s−1) were determined generically (GEN) in players using a 10-Hz global positioning system. HSR, VHSR, and SPR speed thresholds were also reconfigured according to player peak speed per se and in combination with the final velocity achieved in the 30:15 Intermittent Fitness Test (locomotor approach to establishing individual speed zones). On the morning following matches (match day [MD + 1]), players recorded subjective wellness ratings of fatigue and soreness using 7-point Likert scales. Results: Fatigue (−2.32; 95% CI, −2.60 to −2.03 au; P < .0001) and soreness (−2.05; 95% CI, −2.29 to −1.81; P < .0001) ratings worsened on MD + 1. Standardized unit changes in HSRGEN (fatigue: −0.05; 95% CI, −0.11 to 0.02 and soreness: −0.02, 95% CI, −0.07 to 0.04) and VHSRGEN (fatigue: −0.06; 95% CI, −0.12 to 0.00 and soreness: −0.04; 95% CI, −0.10 to 0.02) had no influence on wellness ratings at MD + 1. Individualized speed thresholds did not improve the model fit. Conclusions: Subjective ratings of fatigue and wellness are not sensitive to substantial within-player changes in match physical performance. HSR, VHSR, and SPR thresholds customized for individual players’ athletic qualities did not improve the dose–response relationship between external load and wellness ratings.

Abstract:
Background: Injury surveillance has been used to quantify the scope of the injury burden in Australian football. However, deeper statistical analyses are required to identify major factors that contribute to the injury risk and to understand how these injury patterns change over time. Purpose: To compare Australian Football League (AFL) injury incidence, severity, prevalence, and recurrence by setting, site, and time span from 1997 to 2016. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: A total of 15,911 injuries and medical illnesses recorded by team medical staff at each club were obtained from the AFL’s injury surveillance system and analyzed using linear mixed models with 3 fixed effects (setting, time span, site) and 1 random effect (club). All types of injuries and medical illnesses were included for analysis, provided that they caused the player to miss at least 1 match during the regular season or finals. Five-season time spans (1997-2001, 2002-2006, 2007-2011, and 2012-2016) were used for comparisons. Incidence rates were expressed at the player level. Recurrences were recoded to quantify recurrent injuries across multiple seasons. Results: Compared with training injuries, match injuries had a 2.8 times higher incidence per season per club per player (matches: 0.070 ± 0.093; training: 0.025 ± 0.043; P < .001). Match injuries resulted in 1.9 times more missed matches per club per season (matches: 17.2 ± 17.0; training: 9.1 ± 10.5; P < .001). and were more likely to be recurrences (matches: 11.6% ± 20.0%; training: 8.6% ± 21.8%; P < .001). From the 1997-2001 to 2007-2011 time spans, overall injury severity increased from a mean of 3.2 to 3.7 missed matches ( P ≤ .01). For the most recent 2012-2016 time span, injuries resulted in 3.6 missed matches, on average. Hip/groin/thigh injuries had the highest incidence (0.125 ± 0.120) and prevalence (19.2 ± 16.4) rates, and recurrences (29.3% ± 27.9%) were 15% more likely at this site than any other injury site. Conclusion: The risks of match injuries are significantly higher than those of training injuries in the AFL. Compared with the 1997-2001 time span, injuries became more severe during the 2007-2011 time span.

Abstract AIM: The current investigation aimed to create an objective rating of Gaelic football teams and to examine factors relating to a team's rating. METHOD: A modified version of the Elo Ratings formula (Elo, 1978) was used to rate Gaelic football teams. A total of 1101 competitive senior Inter County matches from 2010-2015 were incorporated into calculations. Factors examined between teams included population, registered player numbers, previous success at adult and underage levels, financial income from the GAA, team expenses and number of clubs in a county. RESULTS: The Elo Ratings formula for Gaelic football was found to have a strong predictive ability, correctly predicting the result in 72.90% of 642 matches over a 6 year period. Strong positive correlations were observed between previous success at senior level, Under 21 level, Under 18 level and current Elo points. Moderate correlations exist between population figures and current Elo points. Moderate correlations are also evident between the number of registered players in a county and the county’s Elo rating points. CONCLUSION: Gaelic football teams can be objectively rated using a modified Elo Ratings formula. In order to develop a successful senior team, counties should focus on the development of underage players, particularly up to U18 and U21 level.

Abstract:
We assume that all institutions and individuals involved in the organization of sport for children and young people should utilize the educational potential of sport. We assessed the quality of referee interactions with children during sports competitions in soccer. Based on the developmental theory and research suggesting that interactions between kids and adults are the primary mechanism of their development and learning, we focused on the quality of the referee–player interactions in terms of (1) emotional support, (2) game organization, and (3) instructional support. Twenty-five soccer referees who refereed matches for children aged 9–12 years were recruited. The Referee Educational Function Assessment Scoring System (REFASS) was used to assess the quality of the referee–player interactions. This tool was developed based on Classroom Assessment Scoring System—Upper Elementary. Regarding the REFASS dimensions, the mean scores for positive climate, Sensitivity, behavior management, content understanding and quality of feedback were in the medium range, while productivity and negative climate in the high range. In the case of the positive climate variable, the lowest mean ratings were recorded compared to other assessed dimensions. The assessments of the quality of referee–player interactions obtained for particular dimensions translated into the ratings for the specified domains. The highest ratings were given to game organization (6.0 ± 0.8; Me = 6.0), whereas the emotional support and instructional support were in the medium range (4.6 ± 1.5; Me = 4.5, and 5.2 ± 1.8; Me = 6.0, respectively). Referees are usually not aware of their pedagogical function and the complexity of their respective responsibilities. They are commonly considered to be ordinary technicians and evaluators of performance in competition. Based on the results, a postulate was formulated that referees should consciously perform a pedagogical function in the youth sport. Therefore, it is necessary to train them in educational methods and techniques appropriate to the age and needs of the child. The referees will then be prepared to take actions to prevent negative behavior of players on the field and to encourage prosocial behavior.

Abstract:
Within contemporary professional team sport organisations, operational decisions are increasingly becoming informed by objective data. Within the elite competition of Australian Rules football, the Australian Football League (AFL), an abundance of player and team performance data is collected and reported. However, the extent to which this data has been used in the team sport notational literature to inform organisational decision-making is limited. This thesis utilises a particular algorithmic player rating system, the ‘AFL Player Ratings’, and the subcategories used to construct this metric. Each study of this thesis models various applications of player performance data and presents it in a format for the purpose of providing organisational decision support to AFL clubs. The first study of this thesis establishes the validity of the AFL Player Ratings system. The second study identifies how performance profiles created from the proportion of rating points in each AFL Player Rating subcategory can be used to classify players into a priori determined player role categories. Additionally, it determines a level of similarity between the playing styles of each individual player competing within the AFL. The third study developed two separate models to objectively benchmark player performance, and to identify stages of peak performance and specific breakpoints longitudinally. The final study of the thesis investigated the relationship between subjective ratings of performance and basic player performance indicators, in order to gain an understanding of the extent to which human decisions are related to measurable aspects of a player’s performance. It also looked to compare subjective and objective ratings of player performance. Each of these studies address a different use of the data operationally, and provide a framework for clubs competing in the AFL. It outlines how objective player performance data can be modelled to inform various aspects of team and player individuality, value and potential, with a specific focus on supporting team selection, player drafting and recruitment.

Abstract:
The study aims to guide the assisted living facility (ALF) design, in which biophilic design, which is observed to have positive physiological, psychological, and sociological effects on humans, is observed, and the principle of universal design is accessible and designed for everyone. Since there is no place called a biophilic ALF, the study is supported by a nature-oriented design method called Green Building Rating Tools. Green building certificate systems are explored in terms of biophilic and universal design, and three of the certifications show credits linked to the theories researched. With these certificates, green building certified ALFs located in the same region are selected. With the methodology applied on the case studies of three ALFs that received these certificates, how and where biophilic and universal design patterns can be transferred from theory to practice has been examined. Fire regimes are changing around the world raising important questions about the risks to biodiversity. Fire seasons are lengthening, high-severity fires are occurring more often and in unexpected places. Extensive research examines some of the fire related risks to life and property. However, in the fire risk research space there is often limited or simplified inclusion of ecological values. Future fire regimes, alongside climatic change, could have profound impacts on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem function. For example, plant population trajectories can be influenced by demographic traits, disturbance regimes and environmental variables such as climate. Climate change can affect all three and is likely to impact on plant populations through altering natural fire regimes as well as influencing species demographic traits. These changes are unlikely to be unidirectional with some plant types benefiting and others being disadvantaged. Here, we examine the impacts of climate change both on the shifts in fire regimes alone and combined with predicted climate-induced demographic shifts. We use two functional plant types (obligate seeder, facultative resprouter) in a number of case-study areas representing woodland-dominated landscapes of south-eastern Australia. We link a fire regime simulation tool with a spatially explicit population viability analysis model. We simulate fire regimes under six different future climates representing different temperature and precipitation shifts, and 16 demographic change scenarios, characterised by changes to individual or multiple plant demographic processes. Obligate seeder species were predicted to be less resilient to changes in demographic parameters. However, both resprouter and seeder species were found to be negatively affected by the combined impacts of changes to multiple demographic parameters or to a combination of a shifting fire regime and changes to demographic traits, particularly through simulated reductions in adult survival. To our knowledge this is the first study to integrate fire regime simulations with spatially explicit population viability analyses. Such an approach significantly increases our ability to identify which functional types are most at risk of population extinction under predicted fire regime and demographic changes. This flexible framework is an important first step in exploring the complex interactions that determine plant viability under a changing climate and will increase our ability to prioritise research and fire management for biodiversity into the future.

The structure of the electricity system includes universal access to electricity that is adequate, available, reliable, affordable, legal, convenient, healthy, and safe and the efficient (inefficient) use of the electricity. Quality of access also influences clean energy technologies and electrical appliance purchase, ownership, use and perceived value (uptake, hereafter). Also, improved uptake assists in closing systemic gaps between rural and urban areas and grid and off-grid communities. Rwanda is projected to attain full electrification by 2024 (inclusive of all sectors: consumptive, productive and services). In this context, the East African country has articulated support mechanisms for off-grid market players through technical assessments and siting incentives. However, studies that focus on characterising diffusion and uptake of clean energy technologies and electrical appliances in mini-grid sites (market) are crucial to understand the emerging trends in off-grid rural electrification. This chapter contributes to this emerging discourse by proposing a four-fold demand side characterisation approach which (i) conducts a systemic review of literature to identify emerging off-grid themes as they relate to the multi-tier framework (MTF) and vice-versa, (ii) uses existing data to characterise the off-grid market (based on a typical village load), (iii) demonstrates the tariff regime changes using two payment methodologies (willingness to pay (WTP) and ability to pay (ATP)) and (iv) projects the 2024–2032 consumptive energy demand (using a simplified relation between appliance, it’s rating and duration of use). Results of this characterisation demonstrate global and local level (glo-cal) literature gaps meriting a localised MTF assessment. The purpose of the localised assessment reported in this Chapter was therefore to understand appliance uptake gaps at the user level. The typical village load is basic (implying low energy demand). Ceteris paribus, higher WTP and ATP by users yield higher tariffs. However, a high ATP is a business sustainability determinant than a high WTP. Because energy consumption is also dependent on how efficiently it is used by those with access, the Chapter discusses appliance efficiency as a partial definition of sustainable energy and also as an example of sustainable energy. Then, demand stimulation pathways addressing wider systemic opportunities at the intersection of the theory of change and the theory of agency and risk reduction in markets, investments and policy (derisking markets, investments and policy) are discussed. The first pathway focuses on women and youth participation in productive use activities. The second pathway highlights strategies for appliance financing such as cost-sharing and micro-credit. The final pathway considers economic activity stimulation which has multiplier effects on energy demand and consequently energy-using appliances uptake. The implications for Sustainable Citizens and markets, investments and policy innovations are contextualised in the Sustainable Energy Utility business model.

State-sponsored incentives have played a significant role in driving the demand for residential and small commercial photovoltaic (PV) systems. All state incentive programs are tied to the power rating of the system, though some states also offer energy production incentives. Unfortunately, there is a disconnect between the power rating of a PV system and the energy that system produces over its lifetime. It is extremely important to consider system productivity, which goes well beyond the efficiency of the components. System productivity is tied directly to the structure of the array, not just the efficiency of the components and the quality of the installation. This paper examines the issues associated with improving solar PV system productivity. The focus is on comparing a series-parallel array configuration to a series-string array configuration and the impact on energy production. Partial shade is used to highlight substantial differences between the operation of the two array configurations.

Current recommender systems consider the various aspects of items for making accurate recommendations. Different users place different importance to these aspects which can be thought of as a preference/attention weight vector. Most existing recommender systems assume that for an individual, this vector is the same for all items. However, this assumption is often invalid, especially when considering a user's interactions with items of diverse characteristics. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we develop a novel aspect-aware recommender model named A$^3$NCF, which can capture the varying aspect attentions that a user pays to different items. Specifically, we design a new topic model to extract user preferences and item characteristics from review texts. They are then used to 1) guide the representation learning of users and items, and 2) capture a user's special attention on each aspect of the targeted item with an attention network. Through extensive experiments on several large-scale datasets, we demonstrate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art review-aware recommender systems in the rating prediction task.

Abstract A rigorous multi-objective optimization procedure is developed to address the integrated structures/controls design of composite plates with surface bonded segmented active constrained layer (ACL) damping treatments. The Kresselmeier-Steinhauser function approach is used to formulate this multidisciplinary problem. The goal is to control vibration without incorporating a weight penalty. Objective functions and constraints include damping ratios, structural weight and natural frequencies. Design variables include the ply stacking sequence, dimensions and placement of segmented ACLs. The control systems design is performed using two separate optimal control systems based on linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory and linear quadratic gaussian (LQG) theory. The optimal designs show improved plate vibratory characteristics and reduced structural weight. In addition, the studies show that including a greater number of segmented ACL damping treatments of relatively smaller size provides optimum designs with better overall vibration suppression characteristics and lower structural weight, in comparison to using fewer ACL treatments of larger size. The choice of control system employed does not produce significant changes in the results of the optimization studies. The impact of varying the properties and locations of the segmented ACLs, on the vibration suppression characteristics of the plate, is larger compared to the effect of varying ply stacking sequence alone. Composite tailoring, however, provides a viable means of improving vibration control of composite plates with segmented ACL damping, without altering the ACL configurations or incorporating a weight penalty. Results obtained indicate the importance of incorporating both structural and control objectives, simultaneously rather than sequentially, in the design problem to obtain meaningful design trends in such multidisciplinary problems.

Banking activities exhibit highly dynamic and evolving feature in recent years. Healthy financial position of the banks therefore gains importance in assuring well-being of all economic agents in a country. Because of banks’ key role in financial markets and real economy, banking failures or inefficient performances may have profound effects on the whole economy. For this reason, it is important to monitor the bank ratios as a strength indicator. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate financial position of the banks in Turkey. To this end, we select particular 29 ratios of the present day banks which are matching the ratios of previously failed banks between the period 1997-2003. Therefore, we construct a data set by which the banks can be categorized into two groups, namely failed and non-failed banks. Data covering the period 1996-2014 extracted from Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency. In the first place, we perform ANOVA test to evaluate the most relevant ratios for bank failure. The ANOVA test results reveal that 13 of 29 ratios are not significant. The remaining ratios are used to implement factor analysis in order to categorize ratios and calculate factor scores. Lastly, we estimate a Probit regression model to determine conditional probability of failure for a given bank. Our results show that financial position of the banks exhibits substantial variations in Turkey. Furthermore, given the data set and methods employed, most of the banks have a robust financial position and are unlikely to fail.

In a piping system, due to the sudden opening or closing of valves and pumps etc., pressure inside can be changed both rapidly and suddenly, which may cause water hammer, noise, vibration, and even damage the whole piping system seriously. Thus, to stabilize pressure in piping system under a target value is very important. In this paper, a novel pressure regulation component, two-stage spring linked perforated plate (TSP), is proposed, which is mainly made up of a fixed perforated plate, a mobile perforated plate and a spring to link them. To begin with, a transient numerical model of a TSP is established and the simulation results are compared with the theoretical formula for the purpose of validation. Then, its dynamic flow and pressure characteristics are investigated under typical inlet pressure and outlet pressure to present its advantage on pressure stabilization. Meanwhile, different pressure ratios from 1 to 2 are all investigated on dynamic motion of mobile perforated plate. Under different working conditions, the displacement during the dynamic motion at different flow time, the response time to reach the final stabilization, and pressure characteristics are all figured out. This work can be useful for the further design work on two-stage spring linked perforated plates and similar pressure regulation components.

The interface between intersecting microfluidic multicomponent flow is investigated experimentally. The system studied has a main channel and an intersecting (at 90 degrees) daughter channel and the fluid is a water-microsphere mixture. Flow visualization is achieved using confocal fluorescence microscopy. Microsphere solutions of 2% and 4% spheres (by weight) are investigated and compared to each other as well as all water flows. A three-dimensional rendering of the location and shape of the interface at the junction for different flow ratios (daughter flow to total) is examined for a combined flow Reynolds number of approximately one. The interface downstream of the junction is reasonably planer (two-dimensional) and the presence of microspheres does not appear to strongly influence the location of the flow interface.

Abstract Subsea liquid-gas flows conveyed through a flexible riser or pipeline may develop into various flow patterns including slug flow. In this study, the slug flow-induced vibration (SIV) of an inclined sagged riser conveying upward air-water flows is experimentally investigated. A small-scale experiment is carried out in an air-water test loop with a section of a free-hanging catenary tube made of silica gel. Attention is placed on the effect of superficial gas and liquid velocities on SIV responses. Both pipe motions and flow patterns are recorded using non-intrusive high-speed cameras. Pressure variations are also measured at the pipe inlet and outlet by two pressure transducers. The SIV system is tested by employing different ratios of the superficial gas-liquid velocities. Occurrence of unstable slug flows is captured at the relatively high gas-to-liquid velocity ratios, leading to a large-amplitude SIV. Experimental results of the space-time varying riser responses and oscillation frequencies are reported together with the associated slug flow features. Depending on the gas-liquid superficial velocities, slug flow characteristics are observed to vary significantly. These entail an intermittent SIV with modulated amplitudes and frequencies along riser span, signalling a potential dynamic stress and fatigue-related concern. In all experimental cases, the riser responses are found to be multi-modal and dominated by the fundamental planar mode whereas an out-of-plane vibration is negligible. Experimental observations suggest the key interrelationships of the two-fluid flow conditions, the slug characteristics and the pipe dynamics. This finding is meaningful for a practical design of riser transporting internal multiphase flows.

Rapid increases in the power ratings and continued miniaturization of semiconductor devices have pushed the heat flux of power electronics well beyond the range of conventional thermal management techniques, and thus maintaining the IGBT temperature below a specified limit has become a critical issue for thermal management of electric vehicle power electronics. Although two-phase cold plates have been identified as a very promising high flux cooling solution, they have received little attention for cooling of power electronics. In this work, a first-order analytical model and a system-level thermal simulation are used to compare single-phase and two-phase cold plate cooling for Toyota Prius motor inverter, consisting of 12 pairs of IGBT’s and diodes. Our results demonstrate that with the same cold plate geometry, R134a two-phase cooling can substantially reduce the maximum IGBT temperature, operate all the IGBT’s at very uniform temperatures, and lower the pumping power and flow rate in comparison to single-phase cold plate cooling. These results suggest that two-phase cold plate can be developed as a low-cost, small-volume, and high-performance cooling solution to improve system reliability and conversion efficiency for electric vehicle power electronics.

A three-dimensional heterogeneous nucleation is simulated by classical molecular dynamics, where the Lennard-Jones gas and solid nano cluster-seed molecules have argon and aluminum properties, respectively. All dimensions of the wall are periodic and a soft core carrier gas within the system controls the temperature rise induced by latent heat of condensation. There are three shapes of cluster-seeds being cube, rod, and sphere, three classes of masses, and the simulation took place under nine supersaturation ratios, making a total of 81 calculations. An analysis of variance was performed under a three-way layout to analyze the cluster-seed and supersaturation ratio effects on the system. For supersaturation ratios above the critical value nucleation rates were evaluated, below growth rates, and overall liquefaction rates were each defined and calculated. Results show that the supersaturation ratio dominantly controls all rates, but seed characteristics are important for the growth of the largest cluster under the critical supersaturation ratio. Overall liquefaction increases subject to an escalation of supersaturation ratio and seed mass. However, the significance of the supersaturation ratio for overall liquefaction suggests that thermal diffusion is more dominant than mass interactions for this system. Homogeneous characteristics are also compared with the heterogeneous system to find that though nucleation may occur for an insufficient supersaturation ratio when a seed is within the system, the addition of a seed does not in fact facilitate the increase in rates of the phenomena at high supersaturation ratios. Finally a comparison with the classical nucleation theory asserts a 3 to 4 order of magnitude difference, which is within the lines of deviation when it comes to theory and molecular simulations.

Droplet formation in a co-flowing microfluidic device is investigated with the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). This LBM code was validated with two benchmarks such as Poiseuille flow through a straight duct and Taylor deformation on droplets between two shearing plates. A comparison of experimental droplet formation in a microchannel (Cramer et al, 2004) showed good quantitative agreement with our modeling results. With this code, a large number of simulations were carried out with various inlet flow rate ratios at various Re and various interfacial tensions in the co-flowing microfluidic system. All resulting droplet sizes are discussed quantitatively with the nondimensional parameters, which is helpful for droplet control in different co-flowing devices.

«The electronic magazine with rating system of an estimation of individual and collective work of students» (EM) is developed in document Microsoft Excel with use of macros. EM allows to automate all the calculated operations connected with estimation of amount scored by students in each form of the current control. EM provides automatic calculation of rating of the student with reflection of a maximum quantity of the points received in given educational group. The rating equal to “1” is assigned to the student who has got a maximum quantity of points for the certain date. For the other students the share of their points in this maximum size is indicated. The choice of an estimation is made in an alphabetic format according to requirements of the European translation system of test units for the international recognition of results of educational outcomes (ECTS - European Credit Transfer System), by use of a corresponding scale of an estimation. The list of students is placed on the first page of magazine and automatically displayed on all subsequent pages. For each page of magazine the optimal size of document printing is set with automatic enter of current date and time. Owing to accounting rate of complexity of task EM is the universal technical tool which can be used for any subject matter.

The overall goal of this project was to elucidate the role of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil retention, bioavailability and plant uptake of silver and cerium oxide NPs. The environmental risks of manufactured nanoparticles (NPs) are attracting increasing attention from both industrial and scientific communities. These NPs have shown to be taken-up, translocated and bio- accumulated in plant edible parts. However, very little is known about the behavior of NPs in soil-plant system as affected by dissolved organic matter (DOM). Thus DOM effect on NPs behavior is critical to assessing the environmental fate and risks related to NP exposure. Carbon-based nanomaterials embedded with metal NPs demonstrate a great potential to serve as catalyst and disinfectors. Hence, synthesis of novel carbon-based nanocomposites and testing them in the environmentally relevant conditions (particularly in the DOM presence) is important for their implementation in water purification. Sorption of DOM on Ag-Ag₂S NPs, CeO₂ NPs and synthesized Ag-Fe₃O₄-carbon nanotubebifunctional composite has been studied. High DOM concentration (50mg/L) decreased the adsorptive and catalytic efficiencies of all synthesized NPs. Recyclable Ag-Fe₃O₄-carbon nanotube composite exhibited excellent catalytic and anti-bacterial action, providing complete reduction of common pollutants and inactivating gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria at environmentally relevant DOM concentrations (5-10 mg/L). Our composite material may be suitable for water purification ranging from natural to the industrial waste effluents. We also examined the role of maize (Zeamays L.)-derived root exudates (a form of DOM) and their components on the aggregation and dissolution of CuONPs in the rhizosphere. Root exudates (RE) significantly inhibited the aggregation of CuONPs regardless of ionic strength and electrolyte type. With RE, the critical coagulation concentration of CuONPs in NaCl shifted from 30 to 125 mM and the value in CaCl₂ shifted from 4 to 20 mM. This inhibition was correlated with molecular weight (MW) of RE fractions. Higher MW fraction (> 10 kDa) reduced the aggregation most. RE also significantly promoted the dissolution of CuONPs and lower MW fraction (< 3 kDa) RE mainly contributed to this process. Also, Cu accumulation in plant root tissues was significantly enhanced by RE. This study provides useful insights into the interactions between RE and CuONPs, which is of significance for the safe use of CuONPs-based antimicrobial products in agricultural production. Wheat root exudates (RE) had high reducing ability to convert Ag+ to nAg under light exposure. Photo-induced reduction of Ag+ to nAg in pristine RE was mainly attributed to the 0-3 kDa fraction. Quantification of the silver species change over time suggested that Cl⁻ played an important role in photoconversion of Ag+ to nAg through the formation and redox cycling of photoreactiveAgCl. Potential electron donors for the photoreduction of Ag+ were identified to be reducing sugars and organic acids of low MW. Meanwhile, the stabilization of the formed particles was controlled by both low (0-3 kDa) and high (>3 kDa) MW molecules. This work provides new information for the formation mechanism of metal nanoparticles mediated by RE, which may further our understanding of the biogeochemical cycling and toxicity of heavy metal ions in agricultural and environmental systems. Copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuSNPs) at 1:1 and 1:4 ratios of Cu and S were synthesized, and their respective antifungal efficacy was evaluated against the pathogenic activity of Gibberellafujikuroi(Bakanae disease) in rice (Oryza sativa). In a 2-d in vitro study, CuS decreased G. fujikuroiColony- Forming Units (CFU) compared to controls. In a greenhouse study, treating with CuSNPs at 50 mg/L at the seed stage significantly decreased disease incidence on rice while the commercial Cu-based pesticide Kocide 3000 had no impact on disease. Foliar-applied CuONPs and CuS (1:1) NPs decreased disease incidence by 30.0 and 32.5%, respectively, which outperformed CuS (1:4) NPs (15%) and Kocide 3000 (12.5%). CuS (1:4) NPs also modulated the shoot salicylic acid (SA) and Jasmonic acid (JA) production to enhance the plant defense mechanisms against G. fujikuroiinfection. These results are useful for improving the delivery efficiency of agrichemicals via nano-enabled strategies while minimizing their environmental impact, and advance our understanding of the defense mechanisms triggered by the NPs presence in plants.
