Abstract:
With the increasing professionalisation of the Australian Football League (AFL), greater demands are being placed upon AFL players with respect to their technical, tactical, and physiological training, in addition to increased requirements to promote their club’s brand via community appearances. Modern AFL players have an additional challenge as their careers will be typically limited to, at best, a decade or slightly more at the elite level. This means that they are also encouraged to develop an alternative career for when their playing days are over. Thus, given these demands, there is substantial challenge for the modern footballer in achieving a sense of balance between work and non-work life whilst also preparing for their next career. Although there is a strong ethical argument to support professional athletes’ off-field activities and development away from the field, there is also a growing argument from some coaches and athletes that participating in these activities actually carries some benefit for the way athletes perform in their sport. Such an argument is consistent with contemporary human resource and management literature where in demanding professions, the support of employee work-life balance and holistic development has been shown to be associated with employee engagement and productivity. Within the AFL however there has been mixed views concerning the value of supporting player off-field activities and preparations for life after football. This is understandable given that there is often an underlying assumption in elite sport that to be successful you must ‘out work’ those you are competing with. The present thesis sought to investigate the potential value that participation in off-field activities associated with their lives away from football (i.e., their social, recreational, and career development activities) may have with respect to AFL players’ experience of engagement in their roles as footballers.

Abstract:
Moving away from home to embark on a career at an elite level involves the individual within a broader social ecology where a range of factors influence the dynamic transition. In 2000, Indigenous and non-Indigenous past and present AFL footballers and AFL administrative staff suggested that relocation was one of the issues faced by Indigenous AFL footballers. The focus of the current study was to learn about relocation and settlement experiences from the perspectives of 10 Indigenous Australian AFL footballers, examining the social, cultural, organisational, and psychological challenges. Five participants were drafted to the AFL within 12 months, and five participants were drafted to the AFL prior to 2002. Participants were listed players from seven Victorian AFL clubs. Interviews were also conducted with eight representatives (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) from organisations associated with the AFL. Players were asked questions about their own relocation and settlement experiences. Secondary informants were asked questions about their involvement with Indigenous players relocating and their perception of the relocation process for Indigenous players in the AFL. Interviews were semi-structured and conversational in style and analysed for unique and recurring themes using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Each of the stories reflected subtle differences experienced during relocation, highlighting the importance and value of using a phenomenological and qualitative framework to understand each player’s perspective and experiences of relocation. The findings demonstrated both facilitative and barrier factors influencing the relocation, settlement, and adaptation experiences. These included opportunity and social mobility, social support and kindredness, culture shock, and racism and homogeneity. Each player’s story about relocation and subsequent settlement and adaptation, highlighted the importance of family, connection, and kindredness as an overarching theme. The findings emphasise the need for receiving environments, in this case the AFL, to treat every player on an individual basis rather than grouping them into a collective. It is essential that a player is understood in relation to his socio-cultural context. The AFL has implemented significant changes to welcome cultural diversity, but as a mainstream organisation, it has been developed within mainstream values. Just as society in general needs to acknowledge Australian history and the overall discrepancies between Indigenous and non-Indigenous opportunities and living standards, the AFL has to continue to de-institutionalise stereotypes and increase the cultural awareness of all groups to continue being a forerunner of progressive race relations. The current study represents an important initial step in the identification and description of the relocation processes from the vantage point of Indigenous footballers.

PEÑA, VANESSA NICOLE. "KNEE INJURIES IN FEMALE SOCCER PLAYERS: A FOCUS ON THE ACL." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/613415.

Full text
Abstract:
Knee injuries are extremely prevalent in high pivoting sports such as soccer, with non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries being the most common. Female athletes are up to eight times more likely to experience ACL injuries compared to males. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible reasons why females are so much more likely to experience ACL injuries and identify methods which can be used to prevent such injuries. A review of textbooks and articles regarding the anatomy and biomechanics of the knee was conducted followed by a review of articles on the topic of anatomical, biomechanical, neuromuscular, and hormonal differences between males and females. This investigation identified multiple risk factors under each category which place females at an increased risk of ACL tear. A later review of the diagnosis and treatment showed that ACL injuries are the most well understood of the major ligament tears which occur in the knee. Treatment options include non-operative methods and surgical methods, depending on the patient and extent of the injury. Finally, a review of the literature regarding prevention programs demonstrated that it is possible to decrease the risk of ACL injury in females through neuromuscular and biomechanical training.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A new type of wideband lters, with tunability in both the centre frequency and bandwidth, is presented in this thesis. These lters are based on perturbed ring-resonators in cascade, while varactor diodes are used for electronic tuning. The Karoo Array Telescope (KAT-7) requires a front-end lter that has the ability for ne-tuning the response after fabrication, in order to obtain the designed ltering response. Not only are tune-all characteristics required, but also wide bandwidth, at passband, high selectivity and implementation in microstrip technology. In this thesis an extensive investigation of both tunable and wideband lters is done, in order to nd a possible solution for the KAT-7 speci cations. Following this investigation, it is concluded that no suitable design approach for tune-all wideband lters, implemented in microstrip, exists in current literature. Therefore, this thesis proposes a new type of lter along with the development of a complete design procedure. Two lters are designed with this procedure to achieve the required passband from 1.2 to 1.95 GHz (i.e. a fractional bandwidth of 49%). In the rst lter design, with a network consisting of 4 cascaded ltering-sections, the centre frequency is 5% tunable and the bandwidth 17.5%. With the second lter consisting of 6 cascaded ltering-sections, higher selectivity is achieved but with lower return loss. Here the centre frequency is 8.5% tunable and the bandwidth 18.8%. The theoretical results are validated with the fabrication of both lters. This design is very unique in that it achieves wide bandwidth, is realisable in microstrip and most importantly is tunable in both the centre frequency and bandwidth. An advantage of this design procedure is that full wave simulations are minimal, due to the complete circuit models used for optimisation.

Abstract:
With the evolution of the human needs in the last years, data transmission and storage for video and media applications have grown exponentially, demanding the search of new solutions for optimizing the bandwidth. In order to have faster image processing, compression methods are fundamental tools to decrease the redundant data. Among several transformation techniques for compression, wavelet-based transforms are the trendiest ones because of its simplicity and fast computation. Concerning this approach and given the advantages, all-optical image processing is here performed based on Haar Transform. Since this wavelet transform has shown its benefits when compared to other methods, its implementation in optical guided structures is mandatory. In this context, Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) is introduced since it can include different components into a single optical chip. Between the extensive list of building blocks (BBs) available for this photonic integration, the Multimode Interference (MMI) structure is presented as a possible solution to perform the optical Haar wavelet transform. The development of such a structure was done likewise its implementation into a PIC, performing the first order Haar. Using the BBs from a specific foundry, a layout of the circuit from an adapted Haar Transform solution was also made.

Abstract:
An analysis and comprehensive solution to the direct kinematics problem (DK) of all planar 3-legged platforms with lower pairs, called general planar Stewart-Gough platform (PSGP), is presented. There are 10 types of PSGP DK problem formulation including those with mixed leg architecture.
Planar kinematic mapping expresses pole position and rotation angle of a planar displacement as a point in 3-dimensional projective space represented by 4 homogeneous coordinates. This provides a universal tool for kinematic analysis. Its application will be demonstrated in the derivation of a general algorithm for planar DK. For each type of PSGP, the problem is reduced to a 6th order univariate polynomial whose roots reveal all solutions. An example of a PSGP with 6 real assembly configurations is presented. Furthermore, this algorithm was implemented and tested exhaustively. A complete self-contained version, coded in C, is available at http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/∼paul/. It should be easy to customize and adapt to any given real time micro-controller application.

Liang, Boying. "Studies of Ligand-Receptor Pairs Utilizing Polymerized Planar Supported Lipid Bilayers." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/311232.

Full text
Abstract:
Artificial membranes composed of natural lipids are not stable when exposed to air/vacuum, surfactant, organic solvent, etc. Polymerizable lipids provide an opportunity to broaden the use of lipid membranes to study ligand-receptor pairs under harsh experimental conditions. This dissertation presents the utilization of polymerizable lipids in matrix assisted laser desorption and ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for analysis of ligands bound to membrane receptors. This platform may be applied to rapid drug-screening for membrane receptors including transmembrane proteins. Bacterial toxins and their membrane receptors were used as model ligand-receptor pairs to demonstrate the feasibility of using polymerizable lipids to detect and identify ligands by MALDI-TOF MS. Cholera toxin B (CTB) was successfully detected bound to polymerized lipid membranes with incorporation of its membrane receptor, GM1, while no CTB was detected in non-polymerizable lipid membranes. This affinity capture platform based on poly(lipid) showed a high resistance to interferences. On-plate digestion of bound CTB was performed and 57% amino acid sequence coverage was achieved. Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRF-M) was applied to compare CTB-GM1 binding affinity in polymerized and unpolymerized membranes. Under a static flow system, the binding between CTB and GM1 was found to be stronger in polymerized membranes than other membranes. However, the ligand concentration under a static flow system is not in excess and the apparent binding affinity is likely to be significantly different than the true value. The true binding affinity can be approached under a continuous flow system, however equilibration time was found to be too long to address experimentally. Membrane fluidity, which may be required to maintain the membrane receptor activity, is suppressed in poly(lipid) membranes compared to unpolymerized membranes. In order to maintain fluidity, a non-polymerizable lipid was mixed into a polymerized lipid. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) data showed that fluidity of membrane composed of the mixed lipid was maintained compared to pure poly(lipid). Phase segregation of polymerized lipid and non-polymerizable lipid was detected by atomic force microscopy (AFM). CTB bound to GM1 in mixed lipid membranes was detected by MALDI-MS, indicating the mixed lipid membranes retain stability under MALDI-MS analysis conditions.

Purpose: ACL-injuries are comon in female soccer. Preventative intervention has a positive effect on its prevalence. The purpose of this study is to investigate active leader experience of prophylactic neuromuscular exercise and its effect on ACL-rupture in female soccer between 14-16 years. Design and method: A descriptive, qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with active soccer coaches. Qualitative content analysis was employed for data interpretation.  Results: The results contain six categories and fourteen subcategories showing the leaders all had knowledge of neuromuscular exercise (NMT); but that a variety of factors lead to low implementation. Knowledge of NMT was insufficient to support full implementation coupled to a lack of guidelines describing how NMT should be implemented and why. Knowledge of NMT did not reach key people. Courses should include more detailed information with guidance on the design of training, with more information about prophylactic exercise and NMT. Conclusions: Leaders are aware of NMT but there is a lack of knowledge. It is important to supplement course material to include NMT. More guidelines, education and information needs to reach key people for sustainable implementation. Without necessary education, it will not be possible to achieve sufficient compliance to ensure a significant decrease in ACL-ruptures.

Abstract:
Community Climate Model 3 (CCM3) is run on an idealized all land zonally symmetric planet (Terra Blanda) with no seasonality, no snow and fixed soil moisture to obtain a stationary time series effectively much longer than conventional runs with geography and seasons. The surface temperature field generated is studied to analyze the spatial and temporal spectra, estimate the length scale and time scale of the model, and test the linearity of response to periodic and steady heat source forcings. The length scale of the model is found to be in the range of 1000-2000 km and the time scale is estimated to be 24 days for the global average surface temperature field. The response of the global average temperature is found to be fairly linear to periodic and the steady heat source forcings. The results obtained are compared with the results of a similar study that used CCM0. Fluctuation Dissipation theorem is also tested for applicability on CCM3. The response of the surface temperature field to a step function forcing is demonstrated to be very similar to the decay of naturally occurring anomalies, and the auto-correlation function. Return period of surface temperature anomalies is also studied. It is observed that the length of the data obtained from CCM3, though sufficient for analysis of first and second moments, is significantly deficient for return period analysis. An AR1 process is simulated to model the global averaged surface temperature of Terra Blanda 3 to assess the sampling error associated with short runs.

A single governing body to govern South African rugby was formed in 1992. This allowed for changes to governmental policies to South African sport, resulting in South African sport being fully representative of the population. The South African Rugby Union (SARU) therefore has a continual challenge to make rugby fully representative at both provincial and national levels. Previously rugby has been dominated by white players at all levels. The SARU has implemented various programmes in order to accelerate the development of players of colour. Previously the success of these programmes has not been evaluated because the players representing different ethnic groups have not been quantified in a systematic way. The aim was to quantify playing time and playing numbers of South African professional rugby players of different ethnic groups from 2007 to 2012 at all professional levels (Springboks, Super Rugby, Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup). Quantifying playing time and playing numbers was done to establish changes in profile of South African rugby players across the given time period. Thus the efficacy of the SARU programmes to accelerate transformation was indirectly evaluated. A further aim was to determine if there had been a change in ethnic profiles between the various rugby unions from 2007 to 2012.

Abstract:
Not all goals in the game of ice hockey are created equal: some goals increase the chances of winning more than others. This thesis investigates the result of constructing and using a reward function that takes this fact into consideration, instead of the common binary reward function. The two reward functions are used in a Markov Game model with value iteration. The data used to evaluate the hockey players is play-by-play data from the 2013-2014 season of the National Hockey League (NHL). Furthermore, overtime events, goalkeepers, and playoff games are excluded from the dataset. This study finds that the constructed reward, in general, is less correlated than the binary reward to the metrics: points, time on ice and, star points. However, an increased correlation was found between the evaluated impact and time on ice for center players. Much of the discussion is devoted to the difficulty of validating the results from a player evaluation due to the lack of ground truth. One conclusion from this discussion is that future efforts must be made to establish consensus regarding how the success of a hockey player should be defined.

Abstract:
This thesis will empirically examine the distribution of centers of commercial activity in the modern city. Using measures of built space for different types of activity in Atlanta, we will map the distribution of activity in the city; then we will derive the system of centers distributed throughout the city. This system of centers will be sorted into scales, from global to local, so that the morphological properties of the street network associated with each scale may be analyzed using space syntax and other tools. We will then compare the distribution of centers in different portions of Atlanta, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Finally, we will compate the emergent distribution of centers to distributions proposed by Doxiadis, Alexander, Central Place Theory, and others.

Murray, Megan Geneva. "The unladylike ladies of roller derby? : how spectators, players and derby wives do and redo gender and heteronormativity in all-female roller derby." Thesis, University of York, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2327/.

Full text
Abstract:
All-female roller derby is a rapidly growing full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, with a highly popularized punk, feminine, sexual and tough aesthetic. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track. Roller derby is seen as providing a venue to showcase women’s strength and new conceptualizations of femininity and motherhood. However, my findings also indicate that with its many challenges to gender stereotypes, heterosexuality and gender dualism are pervasive and evident in the sport. Even though derby has done much to expand gender expectations, these expectations have only been expanded; they are not diminished or eradicated. Despite this, through all-female roller derby, women are seen as acting in new, transformative ways.

Abstract:
Purpose: To investigate whether there is an association between decreased hip range of motion and noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in soccer players. Methods: In this case-control study, 50 soccer players with noncontact ACL injuries confirmed by surgery had their hips examined and compared with those of a control group. Findings were statistically analyzed according to cutoff points (70 and 80 degrees of total internal-external rotation sum) for both groups. Results: A significant decrease in hip range of motion was found in 38% of all individuals studied at the lower cutoff point (70 degrees) and 64% at the upper cutoff point (80 degrees). The decrease in hip range of motion was greater in the group with ruptured ACL than in controls, with little difference between the two cutoff points (70 and 80 degrees). The difference between patients and controls was statistically significant (p < 0,001). Conclusions: There was strong association between decreased hip range of motion and ACL ruptures in soccer players, not only but mainly due to internal rotation lessening. Despite lacking comparison with other sports, our findings showed a higher decrease of hip range of motion in the group of soccer players when compared with the general population.

Abstract:
The huge enhancement of the creep of plasterboard by humid environments is an old problem in the building industry, but its origin remains unknown. To understand this mechanism a three scales study (macro : mechanical behavior, micro : dissolution kinetics, nano : atomic observation) has been done. There is a strong correlation between wet plaster creep and gypsum dissolution kinetics. The concordance between this correlation and the law of deformation by pressure solution, well-known in geology, permits to propose pressure solution as one of the mechanisms responsible of wet plaster creep. The topological evolution of the cleaved surface of a gypsum single crystal during its dissolution in a flowing under-saturated aqueous solution has been observed with an atomic force microscope. The kinetics of step migration strongly depends on the saturation state of the solution, the force applied by the tip on the surface, as well as the used additives. The study of the influence of the force applied by the tip on the step velocity evidence two different dissolution enhancement regimes. At high forces (> 15 nN) a corrosive wear behavior is observed, while at low forces (< 10 nN) pressure solution is the observed mechanism. The step velocity evolution with the force obeys the known kinetic law of pressure solution

Full text
Abstract:
Phase Shifters are one of the most important building cells of the applications in microwave and millimeter-wave range, especially for communications and radar applications
to steer the main beam for electronic scanning. This thesis includes all of the stages starting from the theoretical design stage to the measurements of the phase shifters. In detail, all-pass network phase shifter configuration is used to achieve broadband and ultra wide-band differential phase characteristics. For these reasons, 1 to 2 GHz, 2 to 4 GHz, and 3 to 6 GHz 4-bit, 22.5°
phase resolution phase shifter realization with surface micromachined lumped components are designed, simulated, fabricated and measured. Basic building blocks of the phase shifters, i.e., surface micromachined lumped components, square planar spiral inductors and Metal-Insulator-Metal capacitors are designed with EM simulation and lumped equivalent model extractions. The validation of the designed square planar spiral inductors is done with fabrication and measurement steps, very low error, below 1%, between the designs and fabricated samples are observed. Using this knowledge on lumped elements finally phase shifters are designed with surface micromachined lumped components, fabricated using an in house technology provided by METU-MEMS facilities, RF MEMS group. Low phase rms error, good return and insertion loss considerations are aimed, and achieved. In addition to the main work of this thesis, a generalized theoretical calculation method for 2n-1 number of stages all-pass network phase shifters is presented for the first time in literature. A different, new, broadband, and combined phase shifter topology using two-stage all-pass filters is presented. Moreover, the implementation of this idea is proved to be practical to 3 to 6 GHz 5.625°
and 11.25°
combined phase shifter. A new approach for stage numbers other than power of 2 is indicated, which is different from what is already presented in the literature. An example practical implementation results are provided for the three-stage 4-bit 1 to 6 GHz phase shifter. Also, a small improvement in SRF of the high inductance valued inductors is achieved with the mitering of the corners of square planar spiral inductors. Comparison of the measured data between the normal inductors and mitered versions shows that the first SRF of the inductors are increased about 80 MHz, and second SRF of the inductors are increased about 200 MHz.

Haycraft, Jade Alexandra Ziems. "Multi-factorial modelling of player physical development within the Australian Football League (AFL) participation pathway." Thesis, 2018. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/38671/.

Full text
Abstract:
National sporting organisations such as the AFL invest significant resources into establishing talent identification (TID) and talent development models to ensure the future success of their sport. The process usually involves predicting player potential through subjective assessments of game performances in combination with objective inputs inclusive of physical fitness testing, movement ability assessments, and match activity profiles. However, elite sporting performance is the product of a player’s ability to overcome and master the dynamic interactions between organismic, task, and environmental constraints that may impede or facilitate physical fitness and skill development. Organismic constraints such as growth, maturity, and learning stages of individual players can all influence physical fitness, movement ability, and match activity profiles. Specific environmental constraints include differences in game play, skill level, game rules and policies, and field sizes. Task constraints are the limitations imposed by a set task, for example; the goals and rules of AFL, the sporting actions required, and the physical fitness qualities needed for high-level match performance. Of particular interest is the as relative age effect (RAE), a selection bias among players of differing skill and maturity levels caused when adolescent players are grouped into annual age-grouped teams. The extent to which these constraints contribute to variations in physical fitness and match activity between levels of junior AF competition is unclear. This thesis investigates the interactions between physical fitness characteristics, the RAE, and match activity profiles across multiple levels of the AFL participation pathway, and the subsequent implications for player TID and development. The first study was a systematic review examining physical fitness measures of players across the AFL participation pathway levels to quantify longitudinal changes observed in physical fitness characteristics. Only studies examining physical fitness tests were included, with 27 meeting the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Sprint time (20-m) was the most reported test across the AFL participation pathway, followed by vertical jump (VJ), AFL agility, and 20-m multi-stage fitness test (MSFT). The fastest times for 20-m sprint were for elite AFL players (range 2.94 – 3.13 s), with local level players the slowest (3.22 – 4.06 s). State Junior Under (U) 18s had higher jumps than senior players; with the lowest jumps reported for Local U10s (range 31- 66 cm). Interestingly, no elite-level data were reported for the AFL agility or 20-m MSFT, with AFL agility times only reported for talent pathway levels (8.17 – 9.12 s). However, 20-m MSFT scores were reported across the junior levels of the AFL participation pathway (6.1 – 13.5 shuttles). Talent squad players exhibit similar test scores between competition levels irrespective of the physical fitness test, with the exception of 20-m sprint and VJ. It was suggested that physical tests can discriminate between local participation level players, but are less useful within the AFL talent pathway. Study II examined the influence of age-policy changes on the RAE across the AFL talent pathway. The study design was a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of junior AFL players attending the annual National Draft, State, and State U16 combines between 1999 and 2016. Birth-date data was obtained for players attending the AFL State U16 (n = 663), State (n = 803), National (n = 1111) combines, with comparisons made against corresponding aged-matched Australian general population birth-rates. Specifically, Under 16s and State players had greater birth frequencies (2% to 4.9%, p < 0.05) for earlier months in the selection year. Age-policy changes at the National level reduced birth distribution bias for some months; however the RAE remained for other months (March 3.9%, June 6.1%, and July 4.3%, p ≤ 0.05). State U16s and National players had 2- 9% lower birth frequencies for the later months in the selection year compared general population. It seems that selection bias towards older players is instigated at the AFL’s State U16, and maintained through to the State and National levels, with age-policy changes only partially successful at addressing the RAE at the National level. Study III investigated the levels of association between physical fitness and match activity profiles of players within the AFL participation pathway. A total of 287 players across seven pathway levels were assessed on the 20-m sprint, AFL agility, VJ and running VJ, 20-m MSFT, and Athletic Abilities Assessment (AAA). Match activity profiles were obtained from global positioning system (GPS) measures; relative speed, maximal velocity, and relative high speed running (HSR). Correlational analyses revealed moderate relationships between sprint and jump test scores and match activity profiles in Local U12, Local U14, National U16 and National U18s (r = 0.32-0.78, p ≤ 0.05), but not jump tests in National U18s. AFL agility time was moderate-to-strongly associated with all match activity measures in Local U12, Local U14, Local U18, and National U16s (r = 0.37-0.87, p ≤ 0.05), and with relative speed in Local U18s (r = 0.84, p ≤ 0.05). Relative speed and HSR were moderate-to-strongly associated with 20-m MSFT in Local U14, Local U18, and National U18s, and AAA score in Local U12, and Local U18s (r = 0.41-0.95, p ≤ 0.05). Match activity profile demands increased between Local U12 and National U16s, then plateaued across the talent pathway levels. Physical fitness seemed to relate more strongly to match activity profiles in younger adolescent and National level players’, therefore recruiters should consider the dynamic changes physical changes between AFL participation pathway levels. The final study examined the utility of physical fitness and movement ability tests in differentiating and classifying players into specific AFL participation pathway levels. Players (n = 293) completed the same physical fitness tests battery as Study III; 5-m, 10-m and 20-m sprint, AFL agility, VJ, running VJ, 20-m MSFT, and AAA. A multivariate analysis of variance between AFL participation pathway levels for each test was conducted, and a non-linear analysis (classification tree) determined the extent players could be allocated to relevant levels. The magnitude of the difference between physical fitness and movement ability was age-level dependent, with the largest standardised effects between Local U12, Local U14s, and older levels for most physical fitness tests (Effect Size (ES): -4.24 to 4.65). The 20-m, 5-m, AFL agility, 20-m MSFT, overhead squat, and running VJ (right) all contributed substantially to the classification model, with over half of the players accurately classified into the appropriate AFL participation pathway levels (57%). The National U16 players were most accurately classified based these tests (87%); however, no National U18 players were classified. Talent selectors should consider differences in physical fitness and movement ability patterns between players when selecting players into the talent pathway; however other contextual factors (i.e., skills, psychological, and socio-cultural factors) are needed to establish a multi-component TID model in older levels of the talent pathway. Physical development differences between players, age-grouped competition levels, and talent levels reported in these studies should be considered in the planning, implementation, and review of AFL development programs. Establishing associations between common physical fitness and movement ability tests used for TID in AFL and match activity profiles allows coaches and talent selectors to make more informed player selection decisions. Also, non-linear modelling facilitates TID decisions as it can highlight under or over-performing players; flagging them to selectors for further investigation of other contextual factors influencing a player’s potential. Future studies should focus on including more areas that encompass TID and development (i.e., skills, psychological, and socio-economic attributes) to provide a comprehensive understanding of the interactions that determine a player’s success at an elite level. This research is not limited to AFL, with the methods used having the potential to provide more informed TID and development processes across other sports.

McIntosh, Sam. "Modelling player performance data for organisational decision support in professional Australian Rules football." Thesis, 2020. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/40987/.

Full text
Abstract:
Within contemporary professional team sport organisations, operational decisions are increasingly becoming informed by objective data. Within the elite competition of Australian Rules football, the Australian Football League (AFL), an abundance of player and team performance data is collected and reported. However, the extent to which this data has been used in the team sport notational literature to inform organisational decision-making is limited. This thesis utilises a particular algorithmic player rating system, the ‘AFL Player Ratings’, and the subcategories used to construct this metric. Each study of this thesis models various applications of player performance data and presents it in a format for the purpose of providing organisational decision support to AFL clubs. The first study of this thesis establishes the validity of the AFL Player Ratings system. The second study identifies how performance profiles created from the proportion of rating points in each AFL Player Rating subcategory can be used to classify players into a priori determined player role categories. Additionally, it determines a level of similarity between the playing styles of each individual player competing within the AFL. The third study developed two separate models to objectively benchmark player performance, and to identify stages of peak performance and specific breakpoints longitudinally. The final study of the thesis investigated the relationship between subjective ratings of performance and basic player performance indicators, in order to gain an understanding of the extent to which human decisions are related to measurable aspects of a player’s performance. It also looked to compare subjective and objective ratings of player performance. Each of these studies address a different use of the data operationally, and provide a framework for clubs competing in the AFL. It outlines how objective player performance data can be modelled to inform various aspects of team and player individuality, value and potential, with a specific focus on supporting team selection, player drafting and recruitment.

Ross, Julian. "The Jekyll and Hyde Element: The Career of Geelong Football Club Champion and Media Celebrity John ‘Sam’ Newman." Thesis, 2017. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/39507/.

Full text
Abstract:
Life histories of many famous Australian Rules football figures have been published. Yet despite John ‘Sam’ Newman having a significant influence as both a player and a media persona, neither aspects of his career have been the focus of systematic academic study. This thesis aims to redress the deficiency by deploying biographical methods to examine both Newman’s football and media careers. The first half of the thesis explores how a privileged secondary education shaped Newman’s attitude to life and football, before turning to his football career with the Geelong Football Club. The second half of the thesis traces Newman’s increasingly controversial media career in print, radio, and television – most notably on Channel Nine’s The Footy Show. A key aim of the thesis is to explore how and why the warm and generous John Newman developed the outlandish, sexist, patronising, opinionated, and narcissistic, persona of ‘Sam’ Newman that has both attracted and appalled television audiences for decades. Accordingly, the thesis concludes that Newman is a complex person, exhibiting two different personalities that sometimes coalesce, thus filling an intriguing gap in the corpus of studies of the playing and media careers of influential Australian Rules footballers.

Abstract:
Player tracking data has previously been used to quantify movement profiles in the Australian Football League (AFL), however little research exists into its use to measure the spatial interactions of players. This thesis presents new methodologies for measuring the spatial interactions and occupancy of players in team sports. Global positioning systems (GPS) and local positioning systems (LPS) spatiotemporal datasets were sourced from training sessions, Under-18s matches and elite-level AFL matches. Datasets were consolidated with play-by-play transactions to infer ball position. An initial pilot study investigated the relative importance of traditional performance indicators to inform the focus of later studies. Subsequent chapters investigated the relative phase of inter- and intra-team player couples and multiple approaches to the measurement of the spatial control of individuals. Gaussian mixture models (GMM) were used to estimate the density of player groups in order to analyse changes in congestion throughout a match. Player motion models fit on player displacements were combined with a measure of field equity to value the passing decisions of players. A new approach to player motion models was developed by fitting the weighted distributions of player commitment to contest events. The resultant models more realistically explain player behaviour in proximity to the ball. The models were used to measure the spatial control of teams, from which the spatial characteristics of passes in the AFL were extracted. Passes were clustered into three distinct styles. In the final chapter of this thesis, the models developed in the preceding sections are used to develop a new decision-making model. The expected outcomes of a player’s passing options are modelled through consideration of field equity, spatial control, kicking variance and possession outcomes. Using this model, passing decisions from the 2017 and 2018 AFL seasons were analysed. In contrast to previous studies, the value of a player’s decision is measured relative to their options, rather than to an increase in possession expectation. This thesis aims to derive insights into player movement behaviour in Australian football. Furthermore, the novel spatial metrics developed in this thesis have applications in player recruitment, coaching, and performance analysis.

Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) are attracting millions of players from all over the world and become an important part of personal entertainments. To support more online players, many game providers (such as OnLive) take advantage of cloud computing to develop cloud gaming services. Although cloud gaming providers obtain powerful computing power from clouds, how to allocate cloud resources (e.g., virtual machines, VM) so as to meet player requirements and to efficiently utilize cloud resources is a key issue. In this paper, we propose an efficient resource provisioning scheme for MMOGs considering AFK (away from keyboard) players, RP-AFK, in game clouds. We leverage the characteristic of AFK players, which only need low QoS for gaming, to decrease the provision of resources (e.g., frame rates) to them and to support active online players. We used World of Warcraft (WoW), which is currently the world's most-subscribed MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Player Game), as a case study to measure the total numbers of players and AFK players. We predicted the total numbers of players and AFK players by using neural networks, which can provide high prediction accuracy, and evaluated the number of extra online players supported. Then we predicted the number of VMs required. Evaluation results based on real game data show that the proposed RP-AFK can support 11.04% extra online players. One less VM can be used in a game zone of a WoW realm for 46.05% of the observed time. Therefore, the proposed scheme can reduce the waste of cloud resources and increase the resource utilization to support more players.

Utilizing the recently developed Electric-Magnetic-Electric (EME) composite metal strips, which can increase the slow-wave factor and have a broad stopband, two applications are introduced in this thesis. First one uses slow-wave structures to minimize the patch antenna employing PCB (printed-circuit-board) fabrication process. The resonant length and area of the slow-wave patch antenna are reduced to be 76 % and 58 % when compared with the conventional one. Gain enhancement of the patch antenna by suppressing surface waves is the other application in our studies. According to the experimental results, the peak gain of the design patch antenna is 1.03 dBi higher than the conventional one. Statements and measurement results of both patch antennas are also included in this thesis.

This thesis presents a novel design method of oscillator utilizing the location and size “Colpittslike” characteristic of stability circle. A high power and low cost single biased PHEMT VCO structure, called gate-opened oscillator, has been designed for FSK application. This VCO utilizes a switch as a frequency controller capable of wider bandwidth than traditional varactor-controlled case. In addition, applying a planar waveguide resonator as a comparison of microstrip line, can successfully reduce the phase noise about 8 dB .The oscillator output power is 16.6dBm and the oscillation frequency is 15.1Ghz.Measured phase noise is -85dBc/Hz at 100KHz offset from the carrier, f=50MHz, input bit rate is 10M bit/s, Vds=3.5V, Ids=22mA.The simulation results of power and frequency agree well with the measured result, in addition, the power control is more than 15 dB and efficiency is at least 60%.

This paper presents three types of leaky wave antenna arrays at Ka-band, which can be realized as a fully planar fashion by employing conventional PCB (printed circuit board) process. A 192-elements leaky wave antenna array, employing the lin-ear array design approach, is built and tested at operating frequency 38GHz. The ex-perimental results indicate the antenna directivity of 22.3dB at the angle of 30.2°/0.8° (El/Az), and the radiation efficiency of 20.3%. To elevate the radiation efficiency of the described antenna array, a closely coupled leaky wave antenna array, employing the couple mode approach, is designed and implemented, showing the greater radia-tion efficiency of 70.3% at 30.2GHz. Additionally, an integrated antenna array proto-type emitting cone-shaped pattern is introduced into the indoor wireless LAN (local area network) application. The measured omni-directional radiation pattern with the 3-dB beamwidth of 22° at the elevated angle of 48° can be obtained, thus allowing nearly uniform coverage. Since all of these mentioned antenna arrays could make the interface to the planar integrated circuits a straightforward practice, a possible sce-nario for indoor wireless LAN constructed by the proposed antenna arrays can be achieved.

This paper presents a novel millimeter-wave design methodology, which applies a multi-layered structure to integrate microstrip and rectangular waveguide on the printed circuit board(s) simultaneously. Two kinds of microstrip-to-waveguide transi-tions such as direct-contact type and DC-block type, which all consist of two back-to-back connected mode converters, are built and tested at Ka-band. The meas-urement results of the direct-contact type and DC-block type indicate that the return losses are better than —10 dB with over 30 % and 40 % bandwidth and the insertion losses are —0.8 dB and —0.56 dB, respectively. To exhibit the applicability of the pro-posed microstrip-to-waveguide transitions, we develop two essential components known as filter and mixer, which are widely used at the communication system. The Ka-band filter prototypes, consisting of two planar mode converters and five waveguide slits, are analyzed by the mode matching method, showing a fair filter frequency response. An even quadrature harmonic mixer employing simple diplexer approach for direct conversion receiver is also presented in this paper. The measure-ment results demonstrate that the conversion loss of 10.7 dB and isolation of more than 30 dB between RF and LO can be achieved. Consequently, these attractive per-formances significantly show a great potential of implementing the multi-function RF modules by using conventional PCB (printed circuit board) fabrication process.

With the scientific and technological advancements, the society which we live is facing the energy and environmental related problems such as pollution, deficiency of fossil fuels, and global warming. In order to resolve these issues, green-energy and renewable materials as well as their devices are demanded. Supercapacitors (SCs) exhibit high specific capacitance and power density, fast charge-discharge rate, and long cycle life. In addition, they are safe in operation and environmental friendly. Recently, micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) have attracted much interests since they can be further integrated into MEMS and CMOS. In this work, we introduce planar interdigitated electrode structure based on MoOx thin film electrode materials, which can be further fabricated to on-chip and all-solid-state MSC. This study investigated the influence of the geometric configuration of planar interdigitated MSCs with different interdigitated patterns (varying the interspace, width, length and number of interdigitated fingers) on their electrochemical properties. Furthermore, we introduce a new concept to fabricate MSC based on MoOx/Ag multilayers, with which the volumetric capacitance is much higher than that of the bare MoOx-based MSC. MoOx/Ag multilayer MSC also demonstrates higher energy density and power density. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed that the electrical conductivity of MoOx was significantly improved due to the incorporation of silver. The corresponding volumetric capacitance increases as the the silver thickness increases. But with the excess silver, the capacitance retention rate was found to be degraded. MoOx/Ag multilayers MSC with a thickness of 1.5 nm for each Ag layer exhibits most excellent cycle stability and highest volumetric capacitance after a large cycling number of 10000 times. This work indicates that high electronic conductivity of the electrode material is crucial to achieving high specific capacity as well as power and energy density for pseudocapacitors. These excellent electrochemical performance of results suggest that our method and design show great promise for applications in integrated energy storage for all solid-state microsystems technologies.

In this dissertation, the fabrication and electrical characterization of germanium channel planar pMOSFETs and gate-all-around (GAA) nFETs in terms of parasitic resistance reduction, process integration, temperature dependence of mobility/ threshold voltage extraction, and strain response are investigated. As the device keeps scaling down, the high mobility channels are proposed to enhance drive current and reduce power consumption. With the integration of 3D device architectures (FinFET, tri-gates, and GAA FETs), the devices provide good gate controllability to suppress short channel effects, reduced leakage and power consumption and increased current density. Ge has been integrated with modern Si process and can be epitaxially grown on large scale Si wafer by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to reduce the cost. The highest hole mobility and high electron mobility of Ge are benefit for the integration of CMOS circuit, which make Ge a promising candidate to replace Si as channel material. In the first part of this dissertation, the high mobility Ge planar pFETs are fabricated and characterized. The high quality Al2O3/GeO2 gate stack provides low density of interface trap (Dit), which leads to suppressed impurity scattering and mobility enhancement at low field region. To further boost the performance by reducing parasitic resistance, two-step implantation and NiGe S/D contact metal are integrated on Ge substrates. For pMOSFETs, the <110> channel direction on the (110) Ge substrates offers the highest hole mobility theoretically among all substrate/channel configurations. The demonstrated Ge pFETs have the reduced S/d parasitic resistance and peak hole mobility of 528 cm2/V-s. To further enhance the drive current, the uniaxial tensile strain is applied perpendicular to the channel direction by wafer bending. Due to the Poisson ratio, the compressive strain parallel to the channel can be generated. The (100) device has a larger strain response than the (110) device which is consistent with theoretical calculation. In the second part of this dissertation, the temperature dependence of mobility and threshold voltage of Ge planar pFETs are investigated by low temperature measurement. The carrier mobility of Ge pFETs is dominated by impurity scattering at low field and increased with increasing temperature. At high field region, the mobility decreases with increasing temperature, indicating that phonon scattering is dominating. For the temperature dependent threshold voltage modeling, the effect of interface charge increase is considered due to the high Dit in Ge MOSFETs, and is verified with experimental data. Next, the high performance Ge junctionless nGAAFETs with high drive and Ion/Ioff are fabricated and characterized. The CVD-grown epi-Ge on SOI with low defect density and tensile strain is achieved by in-situ phosphorus doping and laser annealing and the active doping concentration reaches 2E20 cm-3. The selective anisotropic etching was performed to remove the defective Ge near Ge/Si interface which degrade IV characteristics and to form GAA structure. For the operation mode, the junctionless (JL) transistor is used to prevent defect generation and doping diffusion issues of ion implantation and simplify the process. With channel length (Lch) of 250 nm and equivalent oxide thickness of 2.2 nm, the fabricated JL Ge nGAAFETs have high drive current of 828 uA/um and Ion/Ioff of 105. Finally, parasitic resistance reduction of Ge JL nGAAFETs by selective laser annealing and NiGe contact metal is investigated. In highly scaled transistor, the drive current is limited by parasitic resistance. To reduce the resistance by simply raise the S/D doping level, the selective laser annealing is performed to re-activate the dopant at S/D region and maintain good gate stack quality and relative low doping concentration at channel simultaneously. With scaled Lch of 60 nm, the drive current of Ge JL nGAAFETs reaches 1146 uA/um (VOV = VDS = 1 V) and can be further enhance to 1235 uA/um by applying external strain. The mobility enhancement of JL nGAAFETs with self-heating effect observed by pulse-IV and low temperature measurement indicates that the mobility is dominated by impurity scattering.

What can eliciting the motif of the Chinese garden in a contemporary exhibition explore, in terms of a diasporic expression about cultural identification? In my exhibition All the Flowers Have Foreign Names (花都外國名) at Haiton Art Centre (24 June – 1 July 2017), I regard the “Chinese” garden as a motif through which to rethink the definition of Chineseness and what this means to my cultural identity, from the perspective of someone from the Chinese diaspora. In this paper I recount my research around the frameworks of “Chinese” gardens and installation art, through phenomenological interpretations about the landscape and cultural formation processes, in order to understand the artistic language with which I materialise this exploration. This research includes challenging stereotypes of Chinese gardens that homogenise definitions of the Chinese race and values, including the Chinese relationship to “nature”. These ideas filter into my exhibition All the Flowers Have Foreign Names to express the diasporic experience of ‘placelessness’. Through artistic explorations around wandering, speechlessness, and a construction of cultural identity that ‘recycles in order to build itself’, I create a placeless installation that temporarily places ‘placelessness’.
