Harris-Reeves, Brooke. "Behaviour Management Strategies of Beginning AFL Coaches." Thesis, Griffith University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366567.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the behaviour management practices used by beginning AFL coaches. It examines beginning coaches’ perceptions of their role, and whether they believe it is their responsibility to manage athlete behaviour. The nature of coaching is multifaceted requiring them to take on many responsibilities. Consequently, coaches can have both a positive and negative effect on the athletes they train. Negative effects range from athlete drop out, injuries, and loss of confidence. On the other hand, positive effects include engaged and motivated athletes, increased self esteem and low attrition rates. It is for this reason that coaches need to ensure they create positive environments for athletes. A postmodern ethnographic approach was used to explore the experiences of AFL beginning coaching candidates. Data was collected via questionnaires, interviews and observations. Data analysis techniques were employed to identify themes and issues around beginning coach’s perceptions, strategies and practices in managing athlete behaviour. Analysis also included the use of a methodological tool that was developed, pilot tested and implemented as a mechanism for evaluating the effectiveness of behaviour management practices.<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>Griffith Business School<br>Griffith Business School<br>Full Text

Said, Pace Doreen. "Assessment for Learning (AfL) in one Maltese state college." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21381/.

Full text
Abstract:
Assessment is a complex landscape. Debates about whether summative or formative assessment, or a combination of both, offers the best approach to assess students’ learning have been dominating international and local literature for years. This study seeks to further enrich these discussions by looking into the relationship between the beliefs and practices about Assessment for Learning (AfL) of Maltese state primary school teachers in one college. A college is a cluster of primary, middle and secondary schools within a particular geographical region. Furthermore, this study takes a step forward in investigating the influence of a collaborative action research approach on the teachers’ beliefs and practices about AfL. Throughout the study, positivism is resisted and the guiding theoretical framework is social constructionism based on an interpretive paradigm. This investigation was carried out in two phases over the span of one year, the first phase in May-June 2014 and the second phase from September 2014 to June 2015. The first phase consists of collecting data from two open-ended questionnaires with eighty-five teachers and eight Heads of Schools. The second part of the study consists of a nine-month long study with three teachers who were new to AfL. These participants took on the role of action researchers to improve their class situations by embedding a set of AfL strategies in their lessons. Multiple data sources including group discussions, individual feedback sessions, record-keeping booklets, semi-structured interviews with the teachers and their students and teachers’ self-written stories were utilised. Both research phases generated rich qualitative data which were analysed from a qualitative content analysis lens. Data coding and analysis were assisted by NVIVO. Findings of the first phase indicate that the overarching situation consists in a positive level of thought, which is accompanied by a limited understanding and a higher degree of mechanical AfL practice. Thus, the relationship is a divergent to a convergent one, therefore a complex one. This link transcends into degrees of semi-complex (Early Years) to a complex (Junior Years) relationship at the particular year group levels. Findings from the collaborative action research part show that this mode of teachers’ professional learning had an overall positive influence on the beliefs-to-practice relationship, albeit to different degrees of improvement. Nonetheless, the participants still ended with a wobbly belief about AfL having the same effect on all the students. This thesis argues that the belief about the pedagogy is also underpinned by the teachers’ perceptions of the students’ attitudes and motivation towards learning. Thus, the teachers’ perceptions of the students are affecting their expectations and perspectives of the success, or otherwise, of AfL. Hence, the belief to practice relationship is a matter of degree.

Campbell, Emma E. "Relocation Stories: experiences of Indigenous Footballers in the AFL." Thesis, Full-text, 2008. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/1993/.

Full text
Abstract:
Moving away from home to embark on a career at an elite level involves the individual within a broader social ecology where a range of factors influence the dynamic transition. In 2000, Indigenous and non-Indigenous past and present AFL footballers and AFL administrative staff suggested that relocation was one of the issues faced by Indigenous AFL footballers. The focus of the current study was to learn about relocation and settlement experiences from the perspectives of 10 Indigenous Australian AFL footballers, examining the social, cultural, organisational, and psychological challenges. Five participants were drafted to the AFL within 12 months, and five participants were drafted to the AFL prior to 2002. Participants were listed players from seven Victorian AFL clubs. Interviews were also conducted with eight representatives (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) from organisations associated with the AFL. Players were asked questions about their own relocation and settlement experiences. Secondary informants were asked questions about their involvement with Indigenous players relocating and their perception of the relocation process for Indigenous players in the AFL. Interviews were semi-structured and conversational in style and analysed for unique and recurring themes using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Each of the stories reflected subtle differences experienced during relocation, highlighting the importance and value of using a phenomenological and qualitative framework to understand each player’s perspective and experiences of relocation. The findings demonstrated both facilitative and barrier factors influencing the relocation, settlement, and adaptation experiences. These included opportunity and social mobility, social support and kindredness, culture shock, and racism and homogeneity. Each player’s story about relocation and subsequent settlement and adaptation, highlighted the importance of family, connection, and kindredness as an overarching theme. The findings emphasise the need for receiving environments, in this case the AFL, to treat every player on an individual basis rather than grouping them into a collective. It is essential that a player is understood in relation to his socio-cultural context. The AFL has implemented significant changes to welcome cultural diversity, but as a mainstream organisation, it has been developed within mainstream values. Just as society in general needs to acknowledge Australian history and the overall discrepancies between Indigenous and non-Indigenous opportunities and living standards, the AFL has to continue to de-institutionalise stereotypes and increase the cultural awareness of all groups to continue being a forerunner of progressive race relations. The current study represents an important initial step in the identification and description of the relocation processes from the vantage point of Indigenous footballers.

Abstract:
Previous scholarship on labor rhetoric has concentrated on the impact of declining union membership and contemporary activist strategies on the part of unions. The press release is a common form of communication that organized labor employs in order to reach its publics. This study explores the press releases of the Texas State AFL-CIO to determine to what extent this level of labor discourse meets the criteria of a rhetorical genre. This study employs the methodology for generic criticism laid out by Foss for identifying genres. The study concludes that a genre of labor rhetoric exists and that the genre was used extensively to promote the Texas State AFL-CIO as a socially-conscious and politically motivated organization.

The crude extract was obtained with Tris HCl 0.1 M pH 7.4 containing NaCl 0.15 M buffer. Haemagglutinating activity detection and soluble protein measurement were performed with the crude extract and after each purification step. Isolation of AFL was performed by affinity chromatography in Sepharose CL 4B column, and the retained peak was applied in a DEAE Sephacel ion exchange chromatography column. Analysis of DEAE Sephacel retained peak on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) showed the presence of a single band with approximately 27.5 kDa. Under non-denaturating conditions it shows the presence of a single 57 kDa band. The novel lectin showed large amount of hydrophobic amino acids, high temperatures resistance and better hemagglutination activity in the range of neutral to alkaline pHs. AFL was able to inhibit the growth of strains of P. aeruginosa, C. albicans and C. tropicalis. The lectin did not show toxic effects on cells of breast cancer, but had agglutination effect on Leishmania brasiliensis promastigotes by recognizing galactose residues on its surface.<br>Uma nova lectina foi purificada e caracterizada a partir da esponja marinha Aplysina fulva (AFL). Al-Shuwairekh, Saleh. "Vocabulary learning strategies used by AFL (Arabic as a Foreign Language) learners in Saudi Arabia." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2001. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/187/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates vocabulary learning strategies used by AFL learners in Saudi Arabia. It seeks to explore the relationship between vocabulary strategy use and success. Further, the study - aims to examine the effect of certain individual, situational and social factors on the use of vocabulary learning strategies. The methodological approach adopted for this study is a combination of a 'multiple cases' approach and survey. The purpose of the multiple cases is to identify vocabulary learning strategies employed by successful and less successful learners of Arabic. The survey, on the other hand, has been conducted to examine variations in vocabulary strategy use according to the following factors: students' first language, proficiency level, level of achievement, course type, the variety of Arabic used out of class, and religious identity. The results of the multiple cases demonstrate that there are major differences between the two groups of students in the seven categories of vocabulary learning adopted in this study, namely, non-dictionary strategies for discovering the meanings of new words, dictionary use, note-taking, memorization, practice, metacognitive strategies, and expanding lexical knowledge. Moreover, the data of the multiple cases identified three levels of strategies. The first level is termed the 'main strategy level', which includes the seven main categories mentioned above. The second and third levels are termed the 'strategy level' and the 'substrategy level' respectively. The multiple cases data also show that students seem to use vocabulary learning strategies in particular combinations and certain orders. The results of the survey indicate that the two situational factors (course type and variety of Arabic used out of class)investigated in this study seem to have a fairly strong relationship with vocabulary strategy use. The individual factors (students' first language proficiency level and level of achievement) examined in this study,on the other hand, appear to have a very weak relationship with the use of vocabulary learning strategies and finally the social factor (religious identity) appears to have some relationship with vocabulary strategy use.

Abstract:
With the increasing professionalisation of the Australian Football League (AFL), greater demands are being placed upon AFL players with respect to their technical, tactical, and physiological training, in addition to increased requirements to promote their club’s brand via community appearances. Modern AFL players have an additional challenge as their careers will be typically limited to, at best, a decade or slightly more at the elite level. This means that they are also encouraged to develop an alternative career for when their playing days are over. Thus, given these demands, there is substantial challenge for the modern footballer in achieving a sense of balance between work and non-work life whilst also preparing for their next career. Although there is a strong ethical argument to support professional athletes’ off-field activities and development away from the field, there is also a growing argument from some coaches and athletes that participating in these activities actually carries some benefit for the way athletes perform in their sport. Such an argument is consistent with contemporary human resource and management literature where in demanding professions, the support of employee work-life balance and holistic development has been shown to be associated with employee engagement and productivity. Within the AFL however there has been mixed views concerning the value of supporting player off-field activities and preparations for life after football. This is understandable given that there is often an underlying assumption in elite sport that to be successful you must ‘out work’ those you are competing with. The present thesis sought to investigate the potential value that participation in off-field activities associated with their lives away from football (i.e., their social, recreational, and career development activities) may have with respect to AFL players’ experience of engagement in their roles as footballers.

Abstract:
Little is known of how agility events occur in the sport of Australian football (AF). As a result, appropriate training and testing methods are unknown. This thesis investigated 1v1 agility in AF to evaluate alternative methods for training and testing agility. The thesis was undertaken in three studies. Study one investigated if training and testing practices used in elite AF align with the demands of competition. A notational analysis revealed substantial variation in movement patterns used by, and the cognitive demands of, athletes in agility events. A survey of high-performance managers in the AFL revealed that a mixture of open and closed training methods are used in elite AF, and that subjective agility assessment is preferred to formal testing. Study two assessed the reliability and ecological validity of a field-based test of attacking and defending agility for AF. The text exhibited excellent inter-rater and intra-rater reliability, as well as moderate test-retest reliability. Characteristics of the test were compared to the notational analysis to assess the ecological validity of the test. While the test did not fully replicate the agility demands of AF, the test improved ecological validity when compared to previous tests described in the literature. Study three evaluated the effectiveness of a four-week 1v1 training intervention for improving attacking and defending agility in Australian footballers. In addition, the study assessed the crossover of attacking training to defending agility and defending training to attacking agility. Improvements in attacking agility were found which were greater for attacking-trained athletes. However, no improvements in defending agility were realised. This thesis indicates that 1v1 training and testing is suitable for assessing and developing agility in Australian footballers. However, 1v1 training may be more suitable for improving attacking agility. Further, agility is context-specific, and testing and training should consider the role of the athlete.<br>Doctor of Philosophy

Ellis, Mark W. "Speciation, Species Concepts, and Biogeography Illustrated by a Buckwheat Complex (Eriogonum corymbosum)." DigitalCommons@USU, 2009. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/370.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this research project is the complex of infraspecific taxa that make up the crisp-leaf buckwheat species Eriogonum corymbosum (Polygonaceae), which is distributed widely across southwestern North America. This complex provides an ideal taxonomic group for research into population relationships and speciation. To avoid unnecessary debates about taxonomic validity or contentious issues regarding appropriate species definitions, the historical evolution of the species concept is first reviewed in detail, demythologizing an often-assumed species problem. Following that review, the E. corymbosum complex is examined specifically. Although eight varieties of E. corymbosum are currently recognized based on morphological characters, this group of large, woody shrubs has a history of revisions that demonstrates the uncertainty inherent in circumscriptions based on morphology alone. The apparent rarity of some E. corymbosum varieties also presents conservation and management challenges, demonstrating the need for taxonomic verification. To bring greater resolution to this group, I genetically tested samples from populations of six of the eight varieties of E. corymbosum, as well as a number of related buckwheat species. With 103 AFLP loci and chloroplast sequence data from 397 samples, I found strong support for the designation of the recently named E. corymbosum var. nilesii. This predominantly yellow-flowered variety had previously been considered part of a more common variety, and thus its management had not been of particular concern. But as a separate variety, its known distribution is quite limited, and management for this rare plant is now advised. An examination of the biogeography of the E. corymbosum complex provides further support for the apparent rarity of var. nilesii, as well as var. aureum. Both taxa are found at the periphery of the complex, and both may represent insipient species. While all other varieties appear more closely related to each other than to varieties aureum and nilesii, with overlapping ranges confined mostly to the Colorado Plateau, both var. aureum and var. nilesii appear to have allopatric ranges largely off the Colorado Plateau. It appears these two peripheral varieties may each entail a separate center of origin for two new taxa.

Abstract:
The spermaphytes predominantly represented by angiosperms or flowering plants, have the fundamental ability to disseminate through seeds. Seeds are essential for the survival of plants, their dissemination and important resource for industry, especially food industry. During seed formation, critical transitions occur, in particular for development, establishment of reserves, maturation, acquisition of desiccation tolerance and dormancy. These steps are regulated by transcription factors and especially LAFL (LEC1, ABI3, FUS3, LEC2). LAFLS are composed of two families, B3 domain containing transcription factors (ABI3, FUS3, and LEC2) and NF-Y (LEC1) that are involved in gene regulation in different stages of seed development. Studies have suggested the possibility that a complex composed of ABI3, LEC1 and LEC2 is formed on the promoter of OLEOSINE1, allowing activating the transcription of the gene. Nevertheless, the characterization of proteins, their action, regulation and their capacity to interact with each another and form a complex, are still unknown. In a first step, I focused on characterizing the formation of the protein complex composed of ABI3, LEC1 and LEC2, more particularly on the interaction between LEC1 and LEC2. The subcellular localization of the two proteins were followed by labelling in planta, or by means of specific antibodies, their interaction tested in a double hybrid system and the measurement of the effect of LEC1 on LEC2 validated by thermophoresis. All the results demonstrated that LEC2 and LEC1 can form a dimer on the promoter of OLEOSINE1 and that this association change the affinity of LEC2 for its target DNA. In a second approach, I sought to identify partners with (bibliographic data) and without (TAP tagging approach) a priori to complete the study

Bass, George Nelson III. "Organized Labor and U.S. Foreign Policy: The Solidarity Center in Historical Context." FIU Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/752.

Full text
Abstract:
During the Cold War the foreign policy of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), was heavily criticized by scholars and activists for following the lead of the U.S. state in its overseas operations. In a wide range of states, the AFL-CIO worked to destabilize governments selected by the U.S. state for regime change, while in others the Federation helped stabilize client regimes of the U.S. state. In 1997 the four regional organizations that previously carried out AFL-CIO foreign policy were consolidated into the American Center for International Labor Solidarity (Solidarity Center). My dissertation is an attempt to analyze whether the foreign policy of the AFL-CIO in the Solidarity Center era is marked by continuity or change with past practices. At the same time, this study will attempt to add to the debate over the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the post-Cold War era, and its implications for future study. Using the qualitative “process-tracing” detailed by of Alexander George and Andrew Bennett (2005) my study examines a wide array of primary and secondary sources, including documents from the NED and AFL-CIO, in order to analyze the relationship between the Solidarity Center and the U.S. state from 2002-2009. Furthermore, after analyzing broad trends of NED grants to the Solidarity Center, this study examines three dissimilar case studies including Venezuela, Haiti, and Iraq and the Middle East and North African (MENA) region to further explore the connections between U.S. foreign policy goals and the Solidarity Center operations. The study concludes that the evidence indicates continuity with past AFL-CIO foreign policy practices whereby the Solidarity Center follows the lead of the U.S. state. It has been found that the patterns of NED funding indicate that the Solidarity Center closely tailors its operations abroad in areas of importance to the U.S. state, that it is heavily reliant on state funding via the NED for its operations, and that the Solidarity Center works closely with U.S. allies and coalitions in these regions. Finally, this study argues for the relevance of “top-down” NGO creation and direction in the post-Cold War era.

Abstract:
This concept of multivalency has inspired the scientific community to increase the affinity of a synthetic ligand for his receptor. Various effects of multivalency have been identified, including the chelate binding mode based on the simultaneous interactions of a ligand with several binding sites of a protein. During this thesis, we have developed three families of multivalent structures to reach a chelate binding mode with three proteins: the nicotinic receptors and the DCSIGN and AFL lectins. Aspergillus fumigatus is a pathogen adhering to the fucosylated receptors through the hexavalent lectin AFL. We have developed di-, hexa and polyvalent fucosides whose affinities for AFL were evaluated by microcalorimetry and cellular assays. We identified a hexavalent ligand able to inhibit the cell adhesion of A. fumigatus spores at micromolar concentrations. DC-SIGN is a tetrameric lectin binding to mannose units, used in an infectious pathway by the cytomegalovirus. Several structures at low and high valency (2, 4 and 89) of mannose allowed us to reach high affinity for this lectin with IC50 in nanomolar range in the cell adhesion tests. Finally, we developed a series of multivalent compounds to interact with the nicotinic receptors for an application in neurodegenerative diseases. These ligands have shown antagonist properties on acetylcholine α7 type receptor

Weaver, Janet Kay. "Pearl McGill and the promise of industrial unionism: button workers, the women's trade union league and the AFL." Diss., University of Iowa, 2019. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6876.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the boundaries of industrial unionism within and outside of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in the struggle over what direction the American labor movement would take in the Progressive Era. The experiences of Iowa button worker and labor activist Pearl McGill in two nationally significant strikes between 1911 and 1912 enable us to see more clearly the nuances and ambiguities of these boundaries as industrial workers sought to build more inclusive unions. McGill’s advocacy for both the AFL-affiliated and industrially organized button workers in Iowa and the campaign of textile workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, assisted by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), to organize on an industrial basis, shine a light on the conundrum faced by AFL leaders. The AFL and its craft union affiliates held fast to an anachronistic approach to organizing in an environment of rapid and technologically transformative industrialization in which the labor of women and ethnic and racial minorities was critical. The AFL’s early federal labor unions, for which Iowa button workers provide a case study, exemplify the strength of the impulse for unionization among mass production workers and show how AFL leaders fostered an institutional response to the growing demand for industrial unions while ensuring that craft unionists continued to dominate the AFL. The Women’s Trade Union League (WTUL) walked a fine, and sometimes precarious, line between its loyalty to the AFL and the demand of working women—notably in the garment and textile industries—for new, inclusive forms of organization. The strikes of women button workers and Lawrence textile workers illustrate the predicament faced by WTUL leaders. Pearl McGill’s short but prominent career as a youthful leader of the Muscatine button workers, a spokesperson for the WTUL, an advocate for women strikers, and a prominent activist with the IWW in Lawrence illuminates these tensions and the appeal of industrial unionism for young working women. This study elevates the importance of Progressive Era federal labor unions as a bridge connecting the local assemblies of the Knights of Labor of the 1880s to the industrial unions that would emerge in the 1930s. It examines the institutional history of the AFL and its bitter struggle with the Knights and establishes the link between the local assemblies of the Knights and the first generation of AFL-affiliated federal labor unions that provided a precedent for later industrial unions. The arc of industrial unionism in the United States can thus be seen as a long, interconnected movement rooted in the principles of general unionism embodied by the Knights and animated by the vital impulse for industrial unionism carried forward by industrially-organized workers of which Iowa button workers provide an important example.

Abstract:
Abstract In this thesis, we will study very small full trios and full AFLs inside the family of context-free languages. Especially, we are interested in the existence of the smallest nontrivial full trios and full AFLs. This is an old research subject, and it has not been studied much since the 1970s. A conjecture by Autebert et al. states that there does not exist a nontrivial minimal full trio inside the family of context-free languages (2) (see also (1)). First, we will show that there does not exist a nontrivial minimal full trio or a nontrivial minimal full AFL with respect to the bounded context-free languages. This result solves another old conjecture stated by Autebert et al. (1). Then we will try to generalize our result to also concern unbounded context-free languages. We will make some progress, but the problem still remains open.

Schwab, Laura M. "Incidence, mechanisms and risk factors for shoulder injuries in community Australian football players." Thesis, Griffith University, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/398438.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Australian football is a physically demanding sport. Exposure to multidirectional body contact and the necessity for complex upper body skills can result in significant strain on regions such as the shoulder. Despite the rise in incidence and high recurrence of shoulder injuries reported at the elite Australian Football League (AFL) level there is limited evidence available to determine whether shoulder injuries are also a problem at a community level. The financial ramifications of shoulder injuries for the community AFL player and society can be considerable due to time off work, treatment costs and the high number and expense of emergency department presentations. Objectives: The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the profile (incidence, severity, mechanisms and clinical management) of shoulder complex injuries in community-level AFL players using automated injury surveillance (SMS text messaging and online survey). The thesis also aimed to investigate whether factors identified during preseason (i.e. musculoskeletal screening, measurement of habitual activity levels, or in-season training workload) were related to shoulder, head or neck time-loss injuries. Methods: Study 1 and 2 prospectively evaluated a novel, automated method of injury surveillance in community AFL players (during a 20-week season) to assess method feasibility (Chapter 3) and to evaluate the profile of shoulder injuries (Chapter 4). In study 3, video footage of elite AFL players (n = 26) retrospectively examined the biomechanical aetiology of injuries to the shoulder complex (Chapter 5). The final two prospective cohort studies (4 and 5) examined potential risk factors for upper body injuries with similar injury mechanisms. At baseline, community AFL players were assessed using seven screening tests of the upper body, trunk and whole-body function to identify any relationships with in-season injuries to the shoulder, head, or neck (Chapter 6). Screening reference values were also determined. Pre-season habitual activity levels and in-season training workloads were collected to prospectively identify associations with in-season injuries to the upper or lower body regions (Chapter 7). Results: The automated method of injury surveillance was deemed feasible for reporting injuries in community AFL players. The incidence of injuries to the shoulder complex was reported to be high (2nd highest in matches, 4th overall; 10.4% of all injuries). The severity of these shoulder injuries was mostly mild (<3 games missed), but a substantial number required medical attention (emergency department or doctor). Results also indicated activity mechanisms of injury were body region dependent with the majority of upper body injuries (shoulder, head and neck) due to collision contact. Injuries common to lower body regions (thigh, knee and ankle) were from non-contact/ overuse mechanisms. Video analysis of biomechanical aetiology identified that the majority of shoulder injuries occurred with the arm below 100 degrees flexion/ abduction and were caused by lateral contact (34.6%) and hyperflexion/ abduction (19.2%) mechanisms; potentially unavoidable contact injuries. This study found limited evidence to support the use of the suite of musculoskeletal screening tests selected for the upper body, trunk and whole-body function to identify risk of in-season injuries to the shoulder, head or neck. Furthermore, the results identified the variable nature of total workload characteristics in community AFL players, however, no total workload relationships were identified with common in-season injuries to the upper or lower body. Conclusions: Shoulder injuries are problematic for community AFL players and the use of feasible methods of injury surveillance may help overcome the challenges associated with collecting shoulder injury data in community team sport. The musculoskeletal screening tests and measures of training and habitual workload selected and investigated in this thesis, however, were unable to adequately detect players ‘at-risk’ of an in-season injury to the shoulder, head or neck region. Future studies could investigate different intrinsic risk factors to the ones selected in this study and results also suggest that examination of extrinsic factors (such as rule changes) could possibly be indicated with an aim of preventing shoulder injuries. Furthermore, results from video analysis of elite players may suggest that prophylactic strategies should be customised to the positions of shoulder injury and also focus on lateral contact injury prevention in community AFL players. Findings from this thesis may help to inform the development of injury prevention strategies and guide future research directions with an aim of decreasing injuries to the shoulder complex in community AFL players.<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>School Allied Health Sciences<br>Griffith Health<br>Full Text

Abstract:
The Accord was a political exchange whereby the labour leadership participated in the wage restraint programme in return for consultative rights and specific quid pro quo policies, including countercyclical measures to offset fiscal austerity. The President subsequently sustained a policy of fiscal and monetary restraint despite the approaching election and the increasing protests of organized labour. However, in the face of strong opposition from some of Carter's senior economists, the labour leaders secured significant modifications to the second year of the pay standard. The 1980 presidential election renewed incentives for continuing cooperation when economic policy otherwise jeopardized relations.

Abstract:
Sports injury prevention has been the focus of a number of recent public health initiatives due to the acknowledgement that sports injuries are a significant public health problem in Australia Whilst Australian football is one of the most popular participation sports in the country, only very limited data is available about football injuries The majority of sports injury data available for this sport is from hospital emergency departments and elite-level injury surveillance Overall there is a paucity of data from treatment settings other than hospitals In particular, there is a lack of information about the injuries sustained by community-level, junior and recreational Australian football participants. One good potential source of football injury data is sports medicine clinics. Analysis of injury presentations to sports medicine clinics was undertaken to provide a detailed description of the epidemiology of Australian football injuries that present to this treatment setting and to determine the implications for injury prevention in this sport. In addition, the data from sports medicine clinics was compared with existing sources of Australian football injury data to determine how representative sports medicine clinic data is of other football injury data sources and to provide recommendations for future injury surveillance n Australian football. The results contained in this thesis show that Australian football is the sport most associated with injury presentation at sports medicine clinics. The majority of injured Australian football players presenting to sports medicine clinics are community-level or junior participants which suggests that sports medicine clinics are a good source of information on the injuries sustained by sub-elite football participants. Competition is the most common context in which Australian football players presenting to sports medicine clinics are injured. The major causes of injuries to Australian football players are being struck by another player, collisions and overuse. Injuries to Australian football players predominantly involve the lower limb. Adult players, players who stopped participating immediately after noticing their injury and players with overuse injuries are the most likely to sustain a more severe injury (i.e. more than four weeks before a full return to football participation and a moderate/significant amount of treatment expected). The least experienced players (five or less years of participation) are more likely to require a significant amount of treatment than the more experienced players. The prevention of lower limb injuries, injuries caused by body contact and injuries caused by overuse should be a priority for injury prevention research in Australian football due to the predominance of these injury types in the pattern of Australian football injuries Additionally, adult players, as a group, should be a focus of injury prevention activities in Australian football due to the association between age and injury severity. Overall, the pattern of Australian football injuries presenting to sports medicine clinics appears to be different than reported by club-based and hospital emergency department injury surveillance activities. However, detailed comparison of sports medicine clinic Australian football data with other sources of Australian football injury data is difficult due to the variable methods of collecting and reporting injury information used by hospital emergency department and club-based injury surveillance activities. The development of a standardised method for collecting and reporting injury data in Australian football is strongly recommended to overcome the existing limitations of data collection in this sport. In summary, sports medicine clinics provide a rich source of Australian football injury data, especially from the community and junior levels of participation. The inclusion of sports medicine clinic data provides a broader epidemiological picture of Australian football injuries. This broader understanding of the pattern of Australian football injuries provides a better basis for the development of injury prevention measures in this sport.

Abstract:
Aboriginal people make a great contribution to Australian sport in conditions of considerable adversity, and yet their contribution goes largely unacknowledged. This study investigates the experiences of one Aboriginal family with an extensive history of involvement with Australian Rules Football using methodologies which seek, and value, Aboriginal perspectives on their involvement. It privileges Indigenous knowledge. The study focuses particularly on the involvement of the Hayward family in Australian Rules Football - the game they love - and in which they have been intensely involved for many generations. The study describes how the Haywards of southwest Western Australia, like most Aboriginal families, experienced an extensive period of colonisation in which their social and cultural autonomy and power were eroded. The historical experience of Aboriginal Australians is vastly different to that of mainstream Australians, and grossly inequitable, not only in terms of economic and educational opportunity, but also in terms of access to sporting opportunities. In many ways, the story of the Hayward family is representative of the experiences of many Black sportsmen and women over the past hundred years. It is suggested that, in order to understand Aboriginal participation and foster the development of Aboriginal sportspeople of all ages, an understanding of the context of their lives is crucial. This study then, explores my extended family's experiences as participants in mainstream sport. It describes how the Haywards, like their community contemporaries, have confronted the limited opportunities afforded to them in their ambitions to gain access, equity of participation, and appropriate reward for effort in their sporting endeavours.<br>Over many generations of Aboriginal participation in the game, there has been considerable inequality of opportunity to enter and participate. In their efforts to participate, members of the Hayward family faced many obstacles unacknowledged by non-Aboriginal players, administrators and spectators. The study shows that many of these obstacles had little to do with the sporting prowess of the Haywards. Every past and present player interviewed as part of this research told of circumstances where they felt that they had not been given a fair go - be it by an umpire, a team official, opposing players, players from their own team, or the crowd. For every case of acceptance of Aboriginal players by a football club, there are many stories of rejection by other clubs. Despite these obstacles, the study found that the Haywards (like many Aboriginal people) see sport (and particularly football) as significant in their lives. They love the game but, equally importantly, they believe that sporting prowess can open a path of entry to mainstream society, provide important economic advantages and offer opportunities for broader social participation while maintaining strong traditions of Aboriginal virtuosity and relationships. The study concludes by suggesting that, despite the adversities encountered by this family in their desire to participate in football, there has been much in the game that has brought pleasure, a sense of success, satisfaction and achievement to them. While this is the story of one family, I believe it provides important insights into experiences common to many Aboriginal families and sportspersons, and that this research deepens our understanding of Australian social history. Football has been, and continues to be, a valued part of the lives of many Aboriginal people.

Abstract:
Assessment within higher education is pervasive (Leathwood, 2005). The necessity for marks and grades creates a strong summative assessment environment and can dominate students’ thoughts (Crisp, 2012). However, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that formative interventions over a learning period can ameliorate improvements in learning and achievement (Macfarlane-Dick, 2006; Gibbs, 2006; Black and Wiliam, 1998). This research project is an action-based investigation of student teachers’ learning and self-efficacy and focuses upon a second year (level 5) cohort studying for a BA (Hons) Primary Education degree with qualified teacher status (QTS). The evidence of the impact of formative assessment upon performance (Black and Wiliam, 1998; Juwah et al., 2004) provided a theoretical base underpinning my research project. Data on students’ responses to the implementation of a range of Assessment for Learning (AfL) strategies, assessment processes and their self-efficacy were collected by means of questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and analysis of assignment results. The data indicated that interventions such as staggered submission of assignments and changes to tutor pedagogy, impacted upon students’ performance. The largest gains were demonstrated by those achieving the lowest marks, although improvements were noted across the cohort. Changes in self-efficacy were evident and interesting results occurred when investigating sophistication of students’ assessment definitions linked to their performance. Issues on how best to implement formative assessment strategies within a dominant summative assessment model are central to the project and the thesis concludes with recommendations on how higher education institutions can help create a more ‘assessment literate landscape’.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fuzz testing is a random testing technique that is effective at finding bugs in large software programs and protocols. We investigate if the technology can be used to find bugs in multi-threaded applications by fuzzing a real-time embedded avionics platform together with a tool specialized at finding data races between multiple threads. We choose to fuzz an API (available to applications executing on top) of the platform. This thesis evaluates aspects of integrating a fuzzing program, AFL and a sanitizer, ThreadSanitizer with an embedded system. We investigate the modifications needed to create a correct run-time environment for the system, including supplying test data in a safe manner and we discuss hardware dependencies. We present a setup where we show that the tools can be used to find planted data races, however slowdown introduced by the tools is significant and the fuzzer only managed to find very simple planted data races during the test runs. Our findings also indicate what appear to be conflicts in instrumentation between the fuzzer and the sanitizer.

McCaskie, Callum J. "An examination of kinanthropometric and physical injury risk factors in elite Australian football." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2023. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2701.

Full text
Abstract:
Kinanthropometric assessment is an integral part of understanding an athlete’s physical profile and readiness for competition. This typically includes a variety of different assessments which serve to quantify body shape, proportion, and composition in a bid to understand human physiology. Common assessments include stature, body mass, limb ratios, body circumferences, body mass index, skinfold testing, body composition testing, and musculoskeletal morphological evaluations. Specifically, kinanthropometric evaluations have involved the characterisation of athletes according to sport, sex, competition level and playing position. While this has provided researchers and practitioners with greater insight into athletic phenotypes, more purposeful kinanthropometric assessments which focus on the health and performance of individuals are limited. In particular, the interplay between kinanthropometry, health, athletic performance and injury risk is not well established and may provide greater insight into the influence of kinanthropometric characteristics in athletes. Consequently, this doctoral research examined the relationships between kinanthropometric characteristics and match performance, injury and player availability in elite-level professional female and male Australian Football players. An introduction (Chapter 1), critical review of the literature (Chapter 2) and four sequential scientific investigations (Chapters 3-6) are presented. The review of the literature identified essential knowledge gaps including i) the examination of body composition and musculoskeletal morphology in elite female Australian Football players, ii) the relationship between body composition, match performance, and match availability in Australian Football players, and iii) the relationship between on-field workload and changes in body composition. Injury incidence and prevalence within elite Australian Football has not evidentially decreased over the last several years, so adding further knowledge about kinanthropometry and its influence on performance and availability may provide greater clarity. These gaps in the literature helped inform the order and structure of the following research investigations. The first experimental investigation (Chapter 3) involved the characterisation of body composition and musculoskeletal morphology in elite female and male Australian Football players. To our knowledge, it was the first research study to undertake a detailed examination of body composition and musculoskeletal morphology in elite female Australian Football players. With the elite female competition being in its infancy compared to the elite male competition, comparisons were made between competitions. It was identified that body composition and musculoskeletal morphological traits did not differ between experience levels in elite females, or intra-individually between kicking and support limbs. This was in stark contrast to the elite male players who had significant differences between kicking and support limbs and between players of varying experience levels. This may highlight the need for greater long-term physical development in female Australian Football players to adequately prepare them for competition. The second investigation (Chapter 4) was an analysis of the relationship between pre-season body composition, and in-season match performance and player availability in elite female Australian Football players. It was discovered that no body composition traits could differentiate between higher and lower performing players, and could not differentiate between players according to match availability. It was concluded that due to the shorter season length and infancy of the competition, other factors such as technical skill level, may be more varied, and mask any potential influence of body composition. The results also highlight that the current ban of body composition testing in pre-draft AFLW player assessments may not be as detrimental as is currently perceived. The third investigation (Chapter 5) was an examination of the relationship between end of pre-season (pre-competition) body composition and in-season player availability in elite male Australian footballers. In contrast to the second investigation (Chapter 4), whole body less head (WBLH) relative fat mass was significantly associated with in-season player availability in the elite male players. Additionally, players with higher relative fat mass were at three times higher risk of missing one, or two or more games to injury throughout a season, compared to players with lower relative fat mass. This highlights the importance of optimising body composition across pre-season, to reduce players’ risk of injury throughout the competition phase. The fourth and final investigation (Chapter 6) was an analysis of the relationship between on-field workload and changes in body composition over pre-season. Individual and group changes in body composition were examined, highlighting the importance of examining changes on an individual level, as no changes was evident at the group level. Strong relationships were observed between on-field workload variables and change in WBLH fat mass over pre-season. Specifically, higher on-field workload was associated with reductions in fat mass. However, there were no associations between on-field workload and changes in WBLH lean soft-tissue mass. It was concluded that high on-field training workloads across pre-season are important if attempting to reduce WBLH fat mass.

Master’s thesis in the first part focuses on the effectiveness of communication in the selection of reference nodes during the anchor-free localization in WSN. In this part two anchor-free localization algorithms AFL and CRP are explored. Knowledge learned on the selection of reference nodes and communication complexities of these algorithms are used in the second part. The second part is aimed at eliminating weaknesses in communication and subsequently proposed a new algorithm for selection of references. The principle of the newly proposed algorithm CASRU (Centralized Algorithm for Selection of Reference Nodes) is based on the principle of CRP. CASRU algorithm builds logical tree structure and then filters the communication through it. New algorithm achieves much greater success in the selection in randomly distributed networks while reducing the amount of communication load.

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with the didactic consequences of assessment for learning (AfL) in the subject of physical education and health (PEH) at three upper secondary schools in Sweden. The purpose of the study is to investigate how assessment for learning is realised in PEH and what triadic relations between the teacher, student and subject content are established in the formative assessment practice. The empirical material consists of group reflections within a Teacher Learning Community (TLC) as well as field studies, including lesson observations and semi structured interviews with both students and teachers. In the first step of the analysis the material is categorized by means of the five key strategies (Wiliam, 2010a), in order to identify different ways of working with AfL in upper secondary PEH. The second step is a combination of a governmentality (Foucault, 1978/1991b), a performativity (Ball, 2003) and a didactic (Hudson, 2002) analysis, which illuminates what triadic relations are established under different conditions of governance. The findings highlight five fabrications of AfL in PEH, named after their most prominent features or functions, AfL as: i) Empowerment, ii) Physical Activation, iii) Grade Generation, iv) Constructive Alignment, v) Negotiation. ”Among the products of discursive practices are the very persons who engage in them” (Davies &amp; Harré, 2001, p. 263). Accordingly, different teacher and student subjects as well as characteristics of the subject content are constituted in each of these fabrications. Moreover, the so called ‘backwash effect’ (Torrance, 2012) implies that the contrasting versions of AfL promote different kinds of learning, such as: i) increased autonomy, ii) participation in a community of practice, iii) criteria compliance, iv) acquisition of prescribed abilities, v) group development. However, the big idea of AfL is to adapt the teaching to the students and not the students to the knowledge requirements. Hence, this dissertation could serve as a basis for discussion on possible didactic implications of AfL in PEH.

There are a variety of research papers that estimates an index of attention in which the different characteristics in discrete signals of the brain activity were used. However, many of these results were obtained without contrasting them with standardized tests. Due to this fact, in the present work, the results will be compared with the score of the TOVA, which aims to identify an attention disorder in a person. The indicators obtained from the test are the response time variability, the average response time, and the d′ prime score. During the test, the characteristics of the EEG signals in the alpha, beta, theta, and gamma subbands such as the energy, average power, and standard deviation were extracted. For this purpose, the acquired signals are filtered to reduce the effect of the movement of the muscles near the cerebral cortex and then went through a subband decomposition process by applying transformed wavelet packets. The results show a well-marked correspondence between the parameters of the EEG signal of the indicated subbands and the visual attention indicators provided by TOVA. This correspondence was measured through Pearson’s correlation coefficient which had an average result of 0.8.<br>Revisión por pares<br>Revisión por pares

Abstract:
The information signal brought by estrogens is transduced in their target tissues by specific receptors (ER) alpha and beta which harbour two regions involved in transcriptional regulation, AF1 and AF2. The respective contribution of these AFs towards ER transactivation potency depends upon the cell considered. We show here that the establishment of cell junctions is required for a predominant activity of the AF1, notably the region called box 1, which we further demonstrate to be under the control of the Rho GTPases/actin/MKL1 axis. According to our results, coactivation of the AF1 box 1 by MKL1 occurs in differentiated cell lines. In contrast, in undifferentiated cells, the status of Rho GTPases and actin cytoskeleton leads the coregulator MKL1 to inhibit the activity of the AF1 box 1. This results in the reduction of the transactivation potency of ERalpha. Finally, we show that MKL1 is able to influence the transcriptional activity of other steroid receptors

Cooper, Katherine. "AFM and C-AFM Studies of GaN Films." VCU Scholars Compass, 2005. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1246.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses the techniques of atomic force microscope (AFM) and conductive AFM (C-AFM) to study the conduction properties of n-type GaN films. A total of 16 samples were examined and grouped according to their surface morphologies and conduction behaviors. The most common type of surface morpliology was that of Ga-rich samples having undulating "hillocks" with interspersed holes. Although most of the samples had this common morphology, their local conduction behaviors were not all similar. Local I-V spectra of the tip-sample Schottky contact could be grouped according to three major types: low leakage, high leakage, and "p-type". The highest quality samples with low leakage were usually grown at moderate temperatures (~650°C). For such samples, localized leakage only occurred at screw dislocations located at small pits terminating surface hillocks. I-V spectra taken on and off such hillocks were fit in forward bias to determine whether field emission or Frenkel-Poole conduction were dominant. Although field emission is a good fit compared to Frenkel-Poole, yielding reasonable values for the barrier height, the results are not yet conclusive without variable temperature studies.

Enqvist, Olof. "AFS-Assisted Trailer Reversing." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Electrical Engineering, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-5739.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>Reversing with a trailer is very difficult and many drivers hesitate to even try it. This thesis examines if active steering, particularly AFS (Active Front Steering), can be used to provide assistance.</p><p>For analysis and controller design a simple geometric model of car and trailer is used. The model seems to be accurate enough at the low speeds relevant for trailer reversing. It is shown that the only trailer dependent model parameter can be estimated while driving. This enables use with different trailers.</p><p>Different schemes to control the system are tested. The main approach is to use the steering wheel as reference for some appropriate output signal, for example the angle between car and trailer. This makes reversing with a trailer more like reversing without a trailer. To turn left, the driver simply turns the steering wheel left and drives. Test driving, as well as theoretical analysis, shows that the resulting system is stable. Of the eight drivers that have tested this type of control, five found it to be a great advantage while two considered it more confusing than helpful.</p><p>A major problem with this control approach has to do with the way AFS is constructed. With AFS, the torque required to turn the front wheels results in a reaction torque in the steering wheel. Together with the reference tracking controllers, this makes the steering wheel unstable. Theoretical analysis implies that this problem has to be solved mechanically. One solution would be to combine AFS with electric power steering.</p><p>This thesis also presents a trajectory tracking scheme to autonomously reverse with a trailer. Starting from the current trailer position and the desired trajectory an appropriate turning radius for the trailer is decided. Within certain limits, this will stabilize the car as well. The desired trajectory can be programmed beforehand, but it can also be saved while driving forward. Both variants have been tested with good results.</p>
