This thesis takes a biographical approach to the West African collections at the Manchester Museum, unravelling the historical trajectories these objects have taken through time and space. At the heart of this study are the questions of how and why objects travelled from one side of the Atlantic Ocean to the other. African regional organizations have the potential to encourage democracy, stability and development within their regions if they have the right tools. Using case studies of two major interventions by African regional organizations this thesis will determine what those tools may be. From the time of their occurrence up to the present, people have constructed and revised narratives about violent racial events in Florida. In the case of the racial violence in Ocoee and the lynching of July Perry, multiple accounts coexisted until one particular group in the 1990's contested earlier conservative white Southern narratives with new public memories containing African American perspectives of the events, demanding racial justice and memorialization of the events. This thesis is an examination of the unique conditions for African-descended slaves in St. Augustine, Florida, during the First Spanish Period. St. Augustine was an important garrison at a remote point in the Spanish Empire at the edge of a hostile frontier. As such, economics were less a priority than defense. Slaves, therefore, received different treatment here than in English colonies or even other Spanish colonies. Results indicated that peer ethnic socialization messages were prevalent among African-American youth, and that adolescents reported more messages related to cultural mistrust and fewer messages related to cultural pride from peers than from parents.
