The South-African Company and the Diets’ (Greater Netherlands) emigration after the Second World War. The ADVN holds two documents that were written and distributed by the “South African Company” (ZAK). In the first years after the Second World War, this organisation attempted to persuade Flemish people to emigrate to South Africa. It was the intention that they would cooperate in the regeneration of the Diets nation. With this initiative, the authors followed in the larger wake of imperialistic and extreme nationalist ideas, which consider the expansion of the territory as a necessity for the reinforcement or regeneration of their own people or race. It is likely that the documents originated from the groups of former members of the dissident Flemish nationalist youth movement.

The objective of this study was to measure the level of voluntary disclosure of information by listed South African manufacturing companies. A disclosure index designed to measure such disclosure was constructed. In general a fairly low level of disclosure of non-statutory items was observed in the companies studied. Disclosure tended to improve slightly during the five years 1979-1983. Limited correlation was found between the level of disclosure and firm size.Die doel van hierdie studie was om die vlak van vrywillige openbaarmaking van inligting deur Suid-Afrikaanse vervaardigingsmaatskappye wat op die effektebeurs verskyn, te meet. 'n Indeks om mate van vrywillige openbaarmaking in maatskappyjaarverslae te meet is saamgestel. Oor die algemeen is 'n taamlike lae vlak van openbaarmaking van nie-wetlike items waargeneem in die maatskappye wat bestudeer is. Openbaarmaking het gedurende die vyf jaar 1979-1983 effens verbeter. Beperkte korrelasie is tussen die vlak van openbaarmaking en maatskappygrootte waargeneem.

AbstractObjectiveTo assess caregivers’ perceptions of the extent to which the food marketing environment influences food consumption among African-American children (aged 3–11 years) in order to generate potential strategies to make the marketing environment more favourable to healthier eating.DesignIndividual semi-structured interviews with caregivers were conducted by trained community leaders to ascertain their awareness of and perceptions about food marketing environments contributing to African-American children's food consumption.SettingSix predominantly African-American communities in metro Birmingham, Alabama, USA with high proportions of school-age children and lower-income residents.SubjectsCaregivers (n 25) were predominantly female (93 %) and either parents/guardians (64 %) or grandparents (28 %) of African-American children aged 3–11 years. Caregiver mean age was 43 years and 46 % had lived in their current residence for over 10 years.ResultsCaregivers reported all aspects of the food marketing matrix as supporting unhealthy eating among African-American youth. Child preference for foods higher in fat and sugar, lower pricing of less healthy foods, limited access to healthier food retailers and targeted advertisements were particularly influential on the food selection, acquisition and consumption of children. Company loyalty, corporate sponsorship of local events and conflicts over parental v. food company responsibility contributed to less consensus about the overall impact (positive or negative) of food companies in African-American communities.ConclusionsWhile caregivers perceived aspects of their food marketing environments as primarily contributing to unhealthy eating among African-American children, framing the demand for changes in the food marketing environments of African-American youth may be particularly challenging.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is characterized by significant phenotypic variability. DOVE1 was a Phase 3, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, multinational study that investigated the efficacy and safety of prasugrel, a P2Y12 adenosine diphosphate receptor antagonist, for reduction of vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs), a composite of painful crisis or acute chest syndrome, in 2- to <18-year-olds with SCA (age cohorts: 2 to <6 years, 6 to <12 years, and 12 to <18 years) (NCT01794000). Methods: DOVE was conducted at 51 sites in 13 countries across 4 continents. A total of 341 subjects were randomized (prasugrel, n=171; placebo, n=170) and SCA genotypes (homozygous hemoglobin S; hemoglobin Sβ0 thalassemia) were included. Eligibility required ≥2 VOCs in the prior year. Baseline clinical and laboratory characteristics and study endpoints were compared by region. Since no overall treatment effect was found, data provided reflect the combined 341 subjects (Americas, N=57; sub-Saharan Africa [SSA], N=148; North Africa/Middle East, N=110; Europe, N=26). Results: Per regional enrollment, the largest proportion of subjects were 6 to <12 years in SSA (48.6% [n=72]), 12 to <18 years in the Americas (45.6% [n=26]) and North Africa/Middle East (58.2% [n=64]), but more evenly divided among the 3 age groups in Europe (30.8-34.6% [n=8-9]). Self-reported racial groupings differed by region (p<0.001): 100% white in North Africa/Middle East; 100% black in SSA; 19.2% white, 76.9% black, and 3.8% multiple in Europe; and 1.8% white, 96.4% black, and 1.8% multiple in the Americas. Mean body mass index was <17 in SSA and Europe (15.3 and 16.6 kg/m2) but >18 in North Africa/Middle East and the Americas (18.3 and 18.1 kg/m2) (p<0.001). Mean blood pressures were lowest in SSA (systolic: 99.0 vs. 105.4-108.0 mmHg, p=0.004; diastolic: 58.3 vs. 60.4-62.9 mmHg, p=0.003). The proportion of subjects with history of acute chest syndrome prior to enrollment was lower in SSA (6.1%) than other regions (18.2-66.7%, p<0.001). Mean number of VOCs in the year prior to enrollment was higher in the Americas than other regions (5.8 vs. 3.2-3.4, p=0.041). Hydroxyurea (HU) use at baseline varied by region: 91.2% in the Americas, 72.7% in North Africa/Middle East, 42.3% in Europe, and 6.8% in SSA (p<0.001). For subjects not on HU at baseline (Table 1), mean hemoglobin at baseline was lowest in SSA (7.6 g/dL); reticulocyte count was lowest in the Americas (214.8 billion/L) and highest in Europe (327.8 billion/L) (p=0.004). For all geographic regions, the most frequent serious adverse events (SAEs) were classified as blood and lymphatic system disorders, with the highest percentage reported as painful crisis. The second most frequent SAEs in SSA, North Africa/Middle East, and Europe were various infections and infestations. The second most frequent in the Americas was respiratory, thoracic, and mediastinal disorders; all were reported as acute chest syndrome. The overall rate of VOCs (events per patient-year) was 3.2 in Europe, 3.0 in the Americas, 2.6 in SSA, and 2.0 in North Africa/Middle East. The percentage of patients hospitalized for VOCs was greatest in Europe (76.9%) compared to other regions (28.4-57.9%); however, mean hospital stay per VOC was similar across regions (5.3-6.2 days). The percentage of VOCs causing hospitalization was highest in Europe (67.7%), followed by North Africa/Middle East (48.7%), the Americas (46.5%), and SSA (26.4%). In SSA, the majority of VOCs were managed as outpatient hospital visits (67.9%), whereas other regions more frequently used inpatient hospital visits (33.2-55.2%). Regardless of region, almost all VOCs were treated with analgesics (overall: 99.5%) and approximately half were treated with intravenous (IV) fluids (overall: 54.4%). In contrast, the proportion of VOC-related transfusions was greater in North Africa/Middle East and Europe (18.6% and 18.8%) than in the Americas and SSA (10.0% and 6.4%). Conclusions: In the DOVE study, management of VOCs with analgesics and IV fluids was similar across regions. However, there were regional differences in VOC-related hospitalizations and transfusions that may reflect differences in culture, utilization of resources, disease severity, or a combination of factors. Abstract:
Background:Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a known extraarticular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Previous studies have shown variability in the prevalence of RA-ILD, as well as clinical characteristics and risk factors of RA-ILD.Objectives:To evaluate the prevalence and time to onset of ILD and compare the clinical characteristics between RA patients (pts) with or without ILD using a large US electronic medical record (EMR)-based dataset.Methods:Pts with an initial RA diagnosis (ICD-9-CM code: 714.0; ICD-10-CM codes: M05 & M06) during the study period (01JAN2009-20SEP2019) were included from the Discus Analytics JointMan database. The initial RA diagnosis date was defined as the index date. Pts with ILD were identified by ICD diagnosis codes or by provider indication in the JointMan record. Pts who developed ILD before RA were excluded from this analysis. The prevalence and time to onset of ILD were reported. Pt demographics, comorbidities, RA characteristics and disease activity scores were compared for 6 months prior to or on the index date (baseline period) for selected adult RA pts with available information.Results:Among 8,963 identified RA pts, 337 (3.8%) were diagnosed with ILD on or after RA diagnosis. The median time to ILD onset post-RA was 2.3 years, and 47% had ILD within 2 years after RA diagnosis. RA-ILD pts were significantly older than those without ILD (65.8 years vs. 59.1 years; p<0.001; Table 1). At baseline, a higher percentage of RA-ILD pts had history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, positive rheumatoid factor, rheumatoid nodules, erosive joint disease, positive anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody, and joint swelling compared to RA-only pts (Table 2). Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship of personality dimensions with the likelihood that professionals will trust, sharing their knowledge in a large multi-cultural consulting company. Trust was defined from the literature and used to measure likelihood to trust sharing knowledge. Personality was also grounded in the literature and used to measure the five-factor model of personality dimensions. A survey was given to professional workers at a financial-management consulting company in South Africa (n=125). Descriptive statistics, alpha reliability verification, correlation, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance), and Fisher post-hoc group comparisons were applied. A statistically significant model was developed which indicated three personality dimensions were positively related to the likelihood to trust sharing knowledge in the multi-cultural consulting company.

A dark reddish-brown lateritic soil collected from existing borrow pit abandoned by Reynold Construction Company Ltd behind New WAZOBIA Market on Latitude 08008′N and Longitude 04014′E along Ogbomoso-Ilorin Express road, Ogbomoso, Oyo State. Nigeria was treated with cement kiln dust (CKD), a by-product of long wet kiln, obtained from West African Portland Cement Organisation (WAPCO), Ewekoro, Ogun State, Nigeria, under varying moulding water content.The results show gradual reduction in the plasticity index of the samples, decrease in the maximum dry densities (MDD) with corresponding increase in the optimum moisture contents (OMC) of the treated soil samples. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the treated samples increases with both increase in the treatment content as well as compactive effort from British Standard (BS) to West African Standard (WAS) however, there was reduction in the UCS with varying moulding water content as the water content increases and decreases relative to optimum moisture content. The maximum UCS was obtained at optimum moisture content.Cement kiln dust though regarded as waste can therefore serve as potential material in the stabilization of the lateritic soil when compacted at moisture content within its OMC.

Objective: In this study, we examined small food store retailers' perspectives on tobacco company agreements specifying tobacco product display and promotion. Methods: We interviewed owners/managers of small food stores (N = 63) in lower-income neighborhoods in 4 US cities using open-and closed-ended questions between October 2013 and July 2014. We coded qualitative interview data and calculated descriptive statistics. Results: Most retailers had a formal contract with a tobacco company (87%). Retailers perceived that tobacco products generated low profits, but were important to attract customers. Nearly 95% with contracts reported receiving an incentive, including marketing materials (86.8%), displays (79%), and free/discounted products (50.9%). Contract requirements included placing branded displays and marketing materials in prime locations and setting cigarette prices. Retailers in urban, African-American neighborhoods felt pressure to maintain menthol cigarette contracts to stay in business. Conclusion: Contracts with tobacco companies were common among the small food stores in this study, and retailers felt they needed the contracts to keep prices competitive. Given the reliance of retailers on tobacco industry contracts, states and localities may need to adopt measures to counter their effects, especially the financial incentives that lead to lower cigarette prices and more prominent displays of promotions and marketing materials.

Background:In patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) treatment has been associated with reduced disease activity, lower rates of certain forms of organ damage, and improved survival1.Objectives:To gain insight into the mechanisms involved, we examined the impact of HCQ treatment on immunologic biomarkers that have been associated with higher rates of organ damage. These include lupus anticoagulant, anti-dsDNA, low complement, and anticardiolipins (aCL).Methods:We analyzed retrospective data on more than 56,000 quarterly clinic visits from more than 1000 patients in a large American clinical cohort of SLE patients. Patients visits were classified as “on HCQ” if they reported taking HCQ at that visit and at the previous visit. Patient visits were classified as “off HCQ” if they reported not taking HCQ at that visit and at the previous visit. For each patient, visits on and off HCQ were compared with respect to the rates of biomarker positivity. These comparisons were summarized across patients using using conditional logistic regression controlling for age.Results:Table 1 shows the results of our analyses. While on HCQ, the odds of being positive was significantly reduced for each biomarker: Lupus Anticoagulant (OR= 0.65), antidsDNA (OR=0.82), Low Complement (OR=.71), aCL IgG (OR=0.26), and aCL IgM (OR=0.45). However, there was a substantial difference between Caucasian Americans (CAs)and African Americans (AAs) with respect to the impact of HCQ. Notably, HCQ was associated with a 62% reduction in the odds of lupus anticoagulant among CAs, but no association was observed among AAs. Abstract:
Unemployment and lack of economic growth have been an issue in South Africa. This research project studied the impact debt leverage has on a companyÕs ability to grow revenue and create jobs. Most recent literature focused on debt leverage and the increase in company investment but not extensively in company revenue growth. Furthermore, most literature was based on the developed economies. Also, the emphasis of most recent literature was on metrics that would benefit the investor more than it would benefit broad-based economic interests. A panel data regression was used to analyse crosssectional data primarily sourced from ÔMcGregor BFA Research DomainÕ. This analysis covered 74 publicly-listed South African companies which were from manufacturing, mining or construction sectors from 1992 to 2017. From this, it was found that debt leverage does not predict company growth or job creation. However, it was found that short-term debt leverage does predict company growth for companies whose total assetsÕ market value is less than total assetsÕ book value. Additionally, it was found that company size can, under most conditions, predict company growth and job creation.

Abstract:
The Supreme Court of Appeal has revisited the issue that has attracted the most litigation in South African tax law: whether gains from the disposal of an asset are of a capital or of a revenue nature. In CSARS V Founders Hill (509/10) [2011] ZASCA 66, 73 SATC 183 the court held that „intention‟ is not conclusive in the enquiry and cannot be the litmus test in determining the nature of proceeds from the sale of an asset. This judgement relegates intention to only one of the factors to be considered as it was held that it should be considered objectively whether the taxpayer is actually trading or not. The court also indicated that a „realisation company‟ would only act on capital account if it is formed for the purpose of facilitating the realisation of property which could not otherwise be dealt with satisfactorily. This treatise was primarily aimed at an analysis of the court cases which dealt with the „realisation company‟ concept in South African income tax law. In analysing the „realisation company‟ concept through case law culminating in Founders Hill, it was found that in every instance where „realisation company‟ x had won the argument, there had been compelling reasons why the owners of the assets had found it necessary to realise the asset through an interposed company established for that purpose. These reasons include:  to facilitate the sale of property previously held by different people and  to consolidate and conveniently administer the interests of beneficiaries under different wills. Furthermore, this treatise criticised „intention‟ as the primary test in determining the nature of proceeds from the sale of a capital asset and examined the objective approach to the inquiry as advocated in CSARS v Founders Hill. A discussion on the advantages of this approach indicated that it will certainly obviate a number of difficulties that arise from invoking „intention‟ as the litmus test.

Reisbeskrywings, en veral die reispoësie as genre, het met die aanbreek van die twintigste eeu „n opbloei binne die Afrikaanse letterkunde beleef. Talle Afrikaanse skrywers en digters het na verskillende kontinente gereis en hul ondervindinge in roman, dagboek of joernaalvorm aangeteken. Die Afrikaanse skrywers sluit hulself gevolglik aan by die tradisie van die reisbeskrywing wat reeds eeue lank deel vorm van die globale literêre kanon. Reispoësie kom veral voor in die werk van digters soos C. Louis Leipoldt, Uys Krige, W.E.G. Louw, N.P. van Wyk Louw, D.J. Opperman, Breyten Breytenbach, Lina Spies, Petra Muller, Joan Hambidge en meer onlangs Melt Myburgh. Dit is veral Hambidge wat oor reis in haar poësie skryf. In 2011 verskyn „n versameling van Hambidge se reisgedigte wat sedert 1985-2010 in van haar bundels verskyn het onder die titel Visums by verstek – ‘n Keur uit die reisgedigte van Joan Hambidge. Hambidge bespreek sekere deurlopende temas in haar gedigte. Die temas sluit in: die poësie en die verhouding tussen die liefde en die poësie, die mens as alleenreisiger deur die wêreld, die dood en die huldiging van gestorwenes asook die beskrywing van sekere gebeurtenisse in die wêreldgeskiedenis. In hierdie skripsie word gefokus op die ontleding van Hambidge se reisgedigte wat onder drie verwante temas bespreek word naamlik die stad as vreemde rumite, reis as metafoor vir ontvlugting van die geliefde en reis as kreatiewe stimulus. Hierdie ondersoek geskied aan die hand van onder meer Pratt se konsep van “kontaksones”. Reispoësie word binne die konteks van globalisasie as „n belangrike bron van inligting en inspirasie beskou aangesien dit tot „n nuwe geslag wêreldreisigers spreek wat opnuut die literêre waarde van die reisbeskrywing- en poësie ontdek het.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A few years ago, pharmaceuticalcompanies were more inclined to look at business from the inside out. The principal focus was on the company's goals, and identifying and selling to customers were the method of achieving those goals. However,today the customer is king and therefore the focus is shifting to accommodatethis change. The road to success - or failure - is now an expressway, and companies must be ready to accelerate,tum, or stop quickly. Flexibilityand manoeuvrabilitymean a great deal in an increasinglycompetitivemarketplace(Gabe & Goldberg, 1999). What makes a sales team effective in today's competitive global market? What are the key drivers of success in pharmaceutical sales team effectiveness? The most prominent trend in the US market is customer focus, and the most prominent issue is the recruitment and retention of top performers. Today's focus on relationship building may have occurred in part because companies found that their relationships were less than ideal. Nearly 60% of US pharmaceutical companies use customersatisfaction results, among other measurements, to determine the effectiveness of their sales force. A sales force that can make the transition from selling the product to selling the solution - which is the essence of customer focus - has a better chance of earning customer confidence and "partnering" (Gabe & Goldberg, 1999). To isolate factors that make a pharmaceutical sales representative effective is not easy. The best pharmaceutical representatives have excellent selling skills and behaviours, exhibit consistent performance, build networks, contribute to their teams, focus on the most profitable accounts, open new accounts, and win customer loyalty. How does one identify top pharmaceutical salespeople? Look for the representatives with the ability to learn continuously from experience, to take full responsibility for professional development, to size up each situation, and to apply the most effective skills for that encounter. Most often, they will be the ones using consultative and adaptive selling dialogue techniques (Snader, 2002). According to the study, it was evident that the following effectiveness criteria or selling task characteristics have a definite impact on sales force effectiveness and in turn should be part of every salesperson's capabilities: territory management, objection handling, business planning, adaptive selling, customer focus, knowledge, service, selling skills and training.

The purpose of this research is to investigate why there are so few women on South African company boards. Since the first democratic elections in South Africa, diversity has been in the focal point to correct the discrimination and inequalities of the past; however the gender diversity has not been very successful on company boards. Exploratory or qualitative research methodology was employed based on semistructured interviews with a non-probability sample of 13 respondents. All respondents were women who served on company board as directors. They were from various sectors of the economy and served in various capacities on the boards. This study found that the market and the shareholder profiles have diversified considerably, however the company boards have not changed significantly. The gender gap maybe narrowing on company boards however the levels of discrimination and inequalities are still very high. Gender stereotypes continue to inform many decisions in business, including those of board appointments. The study also found that for transformation to occur successfully, leadership had to play a major role. Government has implemented sound regulatory systems that encourage diversity and it is now up to the leadership in companies to take the responsibility and give women opportunities to participate in business through boards. Government, through policies and regulations, continue to play a crucial role in facilitating transformation however the pace of change remains sluggish. Leadership has a critical role to play because the purpose of the policies and regulations is not only to get companies to achieve compliance, but to create equal opportunities for all South Africans. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Tuberculosis (TB) has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organisation, and consequently there is an urgency to develop improved methods of diagnosis and treatment. Despite the current TB epidemic, the disease can be treated effectively using isoniazid (INH) in combination with other antibiotics. However, INH is inactivated in the body by certain drug metabolising enzymes, which may reduce the efficacy of TB treatment. The activity of these drug metabolising enzymes, called NAT, are in turn reduced by nucleotide changes (SNPs) in the gene. These genetic variants (alleles) have been correlated with the rapid- (FA), intermediate- (IA), and slow acetylation (SA) enzymatic activity, and one is therefore able to investigate potential phenotypic effects via genotypic analyses. We investigated these genetic changes in the NAT1 and NAT2 genes in individuals from the local Coloured community (SAC) since this group has one of the highest TB incidences in the country. NAT2 is primarily responsible for the inactivation of INH, whilst NAT1 metabolises para-aminosalicyclic acid (PAS) which is used in the treatment of drug resistant TB. The NAT2 results indicated that the NAT2 alleles were not equally represented in three local ethnic groups studied, and subsequently the rapid, intermediate and slow acetylation activity reflected these differences. However, the relative frequency of these variants in the SAC and Caucasian groups were relatively low. These differences require further investigation to determine their overall relevance to the NAT2 activity differences between groups. In the case of the NAT1 analysis we also observed differences in the relative frequency of various NAT1 alleles between Caucasian and SAC individuals. However, many of these NAT1 SNPs and alleles have not as yet been characterised, so effects of these variants are currently unknown. Interestingly, the NAT1*4 and NAT1*10 alleles were the most prevalent NAT1 alleles in both Caucasians and SAC. The NAT1*4 allele exhibits the rapid NAT1 activity, whilst the activity of the NAT1*10 allele is currently subject to ongoing debate. In this respect, the analysis of NAT1 continues to be a topic for ongoing research. These results, observed for the NAT genes, underscore the importance of doing genetic analyses in local ethnic groups, since these differences may vary significantly between the groups.

Ten spyte van die huidige TB-epidemie, kan die siekte doeltreffend behandel word deur middel van isoniasied (INH), in kombinasie te met ander antibiotika. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the study performed in 2014 was to identify what the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs are of a selected group of electrical engineering professionals from one company in South Africa. The interpretivist research paradigm formed the basis for the “Interactive Qualitative Analysis” methodology used in the study. Due to limitations research was focused on only one constituency, a selected group of electrical engineering professionals in one organisation, which is close to, but have very little power over the specific phenomenon of CPD. Research activities included conducting focus group and individual interviews with participants to gain a better understanding of identified problem through the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The phenomenon of CPD was found to lie within the spectrum of lifelong learning. Due to increasingly fast changing technological and work environments, practicing professionals take part in professional development, if it is compulsory or not, in order to stay competitive in the global arena. Research has shown that compulsory CPD for registered engineering professionals may further their professional development. From the “Possible Implications for CPD Provision for Engineering Professionals” document several issues and concerns were identified, which influence engineering professionals’ perception of the professional body. The CPD system and CPD provision facilitated by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) may be one of the key reasons why many practicing engineers choose not to register professionally. Through this study the perceived and proposed CPD needs for the selected group of electrical engineering professionals have been identified, but to identify the actual needs of practicing engineering professionals in South Africa, a more detailed study will need to be done that should include all the constituencies that practice within the engineering environment or have any influence on the CPD phenomenon. The study also identified aspects that could help to improve the CPD system and the available CPD initiatives, and enhance the leadership from the professional body. This may positively influence the perception of practicing engineering professionals. Such positive perceptions could result in more practicing engineering professionals registering with ECSA and maintaining their professional registration.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die studie uitgevoer in 2014 was om die Voortgesette Professionele Ontwikkeling (VPO) behoeftes van ‘n geselekteerde groep elektriese ingenieurs van een maatskappy in Suid-Afrika te bepaal. Die interpretatiewe navorsingsparadigma het die “Interaktiewe Kwalitatiewe Analise” metodologie wat gebruik is in die studie onderlê. Binne die studie beperkinge is gefokus op slegs een konstituensie, ‘n geselekteerde groep professionele elektriese ingenieurs binne een organisasie, wie digby die spesifieke fenomeen van VPO funksioneer, maar baie beperkte mag daaroor het. Navorsingsaktiwiteite het fokusgroeponderhoude en individuele onderhoude met deelnemers ingesluit om ‘n beter begrip van die geïdentifiseerde probleem te verkry deur analise en interpretasie van die ingesamelde data. Die fenomeen van VPO lê binne die spektrum van lewenslange leer. As gevolg van ‘n toenemend snel veranderende tegnologiese en werksomgewing, neem professionele praktisyns deel aan professionele ontwikkeling, of dit verpligtend is of nie, en bly sodoende kompeterend in die globale arena. Maar navorsing het ook bewys dat verpligte VPO vir geregistreerde ingenieurspraktisyns hul professionele ontwikkeling tot voordeel kan strek. Vanuit die “Possible Implications for CPD Provision for Engineering Professionals” dokument is verskeie kwessies en knelpunte geïdentifiseer wat professionele ingenieurs se persepsies van die professionele liggaam mag beïnvloed. Die studie het ook aspekte identifiseer wat kan help om die huidige VPO sisteem en insiatiewe te verbeter, en die leierskap van die professionele liggaam tot voordeel kan strek. Abstract:
The drive behind a study of this nature was to provide an examination of the key elements that impact on company performance within the South African real estate investment sector is presented. Specific attention is paid to board size, age of the CEO, gender representation and the proportion of independent directors. A total of 33 publicly listed real estate investment firms on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange were studied. A quantitative analysis was carried out in order to determine the impact that certain dependent variables had on the performance of the company. Company performance was measured by the return on assets (ROA). The research finds that board size is significantly negatively correlated to the firms' performance, which is line with similar international research. The paper also found that the percentage of independent directors serving on a board is positively correlated to its ROA. Lastly, a comparison to other similar international studies is discussed in order to better contextualise the findings of this paper. The academic and real-world impact of the results is also examined.

AbstractClimate change has been viewed to result from anthropogenic human activities that have significantly altered the Nitrogen (N) cycle and carbon cycles, increasing the risks of global warming and pollution. A key cause of global warming is the increase in greenhouse gas emissions including methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon among others. The context of this chapter is based on a comprehensive desktop review on published scientific papers on climate change, greenhouse emissions, agricultural fertilizer use, modeling and projections of greenhouse gases emissions. Interestingly, sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has the least emissions of the greenhouses gases accounting for only 7% of the total world’s emissions, implying that there is overall very little contribution yet it has the highest regional burden concerning climate change impacts. However, the values could be extremely higher than this due to lack of proper estimation and measurement tools in the region and therefore, caution needs to be taken early enough to avoid taking the trend currently experienced in developed nations. In SSA, agricultural production is the leading sector in emissions of N compound to the atmosphere followed by energy and transportation. The greatest challenge lies in the management of the two systems to ensure sufficiency in food production using more bioenergy hence less pollution. Integrating livestock and cropping systems is one strategy that can reduce methane emissions. Additionally, developing fertilizer use policy to improve management of fertilizer and organic manure have been potentially considered as effective in reducing the effects of agriculture activities on climate change and hence the main focus of the current chapter.

The identification of foreign firms and South African multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the CIT-IRP5 panel has proved to be a challenge for many researchers. The CIT-IRP5 panel contains variables indicating different thresholds that determine foreign ownership. The dataset also has variables that researchers can use to identify South African MNEs. Using the approaches employed by researchers who have attempted to identify foreign firms and South African MNEs in the data, four foreign firms and MNE indicators have been added to the CIT-IRP5 panel v4.0. This technical note documents the approach followed in the creation of each indicator. This note also highlights the possible company classifications in the data and fields on the ITR14 form that can be used to identify these classifications.

This synthesis brings together data related to public perceptions about COVID-19 vaccines collected between March 2020 and March 2021 in 22 countries in Africa. It provides an overview of the data (primarily from cross-sectional perception surveys), identifies knowledge and research gaps and presents some limitations of translating the available evidence to inform local operational decisions. The synthesis is intended for those designing and delivering vaccination programmes and COVID-19 risk communication and community engagement (RCCE). 5 large-scale surveys are included with over 12 million respondents in 22 central, eastern, western and southern African countries (note: one major study accounts for more than 10 million participants); data from 14 peer-reviewed questionnaire surveys in 8 countries with n=9,600 participants and 15 social media monitoring, qualitative and community feedback studies. Sample sizes are provided in the first reference for each study and in Table 13 at the end of this document. The data largely predates vaccination campaigns that generally started in the first quarter of 2021. Perceptions will change and further syntheses, that represent the whole continent including North Africa, are planned. This review is part of the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) series on COVID-19 vaccines. It was developed for SSHAP by Anthrologica. It was written by Kevin Bardosh (University of Washington), Tamara Roldan de Jong and Olivia Tulloch (Anthrologica), it was reviewed by colleagues from PERC, LSHTM, IRD, and UNICEF (see acknowledgments) and received coordination support from the RCCE Collective Service.
