Abstract:
AbstractThe dramatic elements that are in Shellyseer have traveled for a long period of time and have been affected by dramatic elements from different cultures, which means that Shellyseer is a result of the evolution of drama. This chapter draws attention to the effect that the East and the West have on each other, by pointing out the effect that Aristotle’s Poetics—Western Theory—had on Ghanem Al-Suliti’s Shellyseer—Eastern Literature. This chapter combines comparative literature with literary theory and criticism in order to give an example of a globalized view of how drama evolves where there are no borders that limit influence. This chapter traces back drama back to its oldest documented sources to show how it evolved throughout history and offers deeper knowledge of Middle Eastern drama, the importance, and strength of political satire, and how strong of a mutual influence Eastern and Western literature have on each other.

Abstract:
AbstractDoctor, composer, and Schopenhauer enthusiast Felix Gotthelf (1857–1930) created a symphonic drama Mahadeva (1910) in which he transformed a Goethe ballad into a religious–artistic manifesto. He combined Indian philosophy, as popularized by Paul Deussen, with Christianity and Schopenhauer’s philosophy. Inspired by Richard Wagner, he attempted an Indo-German national and religious revival in music based on a romantic conception of art and religion. It was in effect a conservative reorientation of a philosophical and artistic appropriation of Indian scriptures that betrayed attempts to establish the social ethos of the late German Empire as autochthonous and within the tradition of German intellectual and Reformation history. The author’s contribution is to examine the interconnections between religion, national revival, and music in the context of widespread cultural criticism shortly before the First World War.

Abstract:
Abstract Lorraine Hansberry (figure 2.1) was a visionary playwright whose belief in humankind’s potential to overcome its own excesses of avarice, oppression, and inhumanity compelled her to raise provocative questionson the American stage. Ironically, her success with A Raisin in the Sun, which won the 1959 New York Drama Critics Circle Award and which won acclaim from white as well as black audiences during its Broadway production, led some critics to view her work as integrationist and accommodationist. A virile, confrontational Black Arts Movement in the 1960s, which challenged its parent, the Civil Rights Movement, following Hansberry’s death, seemed to eclipse her work and to label it as “old-fashioned,” both in form and content. How ever, persistent voices continued to claim for Hansberry a more radical stance, and during the 1990s, they have been joined by some of her earlier detractors. A close examination of two of her plays, A Raisin in the Sun and Les Blancs, combined with information about her sources and facts about her life affirm a political stance more radical than previously recognized and artistic choices that challenge the boundaries of theatrical realism.
