Abstract:
Bridge builder between generations: Koos Roets’s cooperation network in the Afrikaans film industry. Koos Roets’s contribution to the Afrikaans film industry is widely recognised. Nevertheless, very little has been published specifically about his role in the Afrikaans film industry, although many studies exist about his collaborators such as Jans Rautenbach and Katinka Heyns. This article investigates Roets’s collaboration network by means of a network analysis, and identifies the persons with whom he collaborated the most, indicating his varied roles on different films. Abstract:
Although the film industry – like the literary system – can be described as a cultural system or field, systems theory remains largely unexplored in South African film studies, as does the more recent network theory. Systems theory and network theory both emphasise the relationships of an entity within a larger context, arguing that an entity should be studied within the relationships in which it functions. Recently, researchers have suggested that network theory can be integrated with polysystem theory to study the interactions between entities in the literary system. This article illustrates

Abstract:
Network theory has become an indispensable theoretical framework for the study of complex systems, and significant advances have been made within the community of physicists who study network topology. One problem, however, is that applications have been less extensive than theoretical and algorithmic developments, and in this article, the concept of modularity is discussed and applied to the Afrikaans film industry in order to investigate how modularity can inform us about the structure of this industry. By constructing a network of everyone involved in all the Afrikaans films released betwee

THE ANGUISH OF A DREAMER: ABRAHAM (2014) AND THE CINEMA OF JANS RAUTENBACH Introduction: Rautenbach's cinemaA few pioneers in the Afrikaans film industry of the sixties produced a number of films that could be labelled "involved films". The theme of these films was an examination of the cracks in apartheid ideology. They included Emil Nofal-Jans Rautenbach's films like Die Kandidaat (The Candidate, 1968) and Katrina (1968). Several film historians regard Jans Rautenbach as the pioneer of modern, bold and South African filmmaking in the 1960s and 1970s. Together with producer Emil Nofal he made

Abstract:
This paper argues that artist Dope Saint Jude is transforming South African hip-hop by queering a genre that has predominantly been male and heteronormative. Specifically, I analyse the opening skit of her music video “Keep in Touch” in order to unpack the ways which she revives Gayle, a gay language that adopted double-coded forms of speech during the apartheid era—a context in which homosexuals were criminalised. The use of Gayle and spaces close to the city centre of Cape Town (such as Salt River and Woodstock) speaks to the city as it was before it was transformed by the decline of industr

Abstract:
The income generated from Afrikaans films has fluctuated over the years. Currently this is still the case and the profits generated from Afrikaans films over the past seven years are cause for concern. The Afrikaans film industry is struggling to keep film attendees interested in their films. The need to better understand the Afrikaans film attendees‟ purchase behaviour has become more important than ever. By obtaining this information the producers, investors and marketers of Afrikaans films can produce and market Afrikaans films according to the market‟s needs and ultimately increase Afrikaa
