Abstract:
Grootskaalse digitisering is ’n wêreldwye tendens van die huidige dekade. Ook in Suid-Afrika word al hoe meer digitiseringsprojekte van stapel gestuur. Hierdie artikel het ten doel om te rapporteer oor van die digitiseringsprojekte wat tans deur die Noordwes-Universiteit en die Virtuele Instituut vir Afrikaans (VivA) onderneem word. Hierdie projekte, naamlik die Digitale Bibliografie van die Afrikaanse Taalkunde, Digitale Bibliografie van die Afrikaanse Letterkunde, Historiese Korpus vir Vroeë Afrikaans (1675–1925) en die Argief vir Historiese Afrikaanse Bronne is slegs ’n spreekwoordelike druppel in die emmer met betrekking tot die digitisering van Afrikaans as taal. Dit sluit wel aan by ander bestaande digitiseringsprojekte wat onder meer deur die Wes-Kaapse Argief, universiteitsbiblioteke (soos die Universiteit van Pretoria, Universiteit Stellenbosch en Noordwes-Universiteit se biblioteke), NALN, SADiLaR en Nuuseum onderneem is. Die omvang en aard van hierdie projekte is egter nie altyd duidelik of bekend nie. Dié artikel dien as bekendstelling en ook vorderingsverslag aan persone en instansies wat ’n behoefte daaraan het om saam te werk aan die digitiseringsproses om sodoende gedeelde en afsonderlike uitkomste te bereik. Die doel van hierdie artikel is die identifisering en analitiese omskrywing van die mees prominente politieke tendense wat tans die Suid-Afrikaanse universiteitswese beïnvloed, met spesifieke verwysing na Afrikaanse universiteite en hoër onderwys. Die bydrae neem as vertrekpunt die teoretiese beginsel van transformasie, en die spesifieke en eiesoortige ideologiese toepassing van dié konstruk in Suid-Afrika sedert 1994. Die ingrypende invloed van hierdie ideologiese transformasiebeskouing op openbare instellings in Suid-Afrika word bespreek, insluitend die institusionele en sosio-politiese impak op universiteite. The purpose of this article is the identification and analytical description of the most prominent political trends which are at present exerting an influence on the South African university sector, with specific reference to Afrikaans universities in the contect of higher education. The contribution has as its point of departure the theoretical concept of transformation, and the specific ideological application of this construct as it has become current in South Africa since 1994. The radical influence of this ideological vision of transformation on public institutions in South Africa is discussed, as well as the institutional and sociopolitical impact of this on universities. Against this theoretical background key issues are discussed which have an impact on the place and role of the South African university scene and the place and role of Afrikaans more particularly, including a survey of the position of Afrikaans in the higher education sector, an evaluation of the transformation of the higher education sector, the rational arguments and grounds for the retention and promotion of Afrikaans in the sector, and the reaction from the Afrikaans-speaking community to the marginalization of the language at universities. An evaluative future perspective is offered in which the retention of Afrikaans should be considered, with the inclusion of a consideration of activism, legal strategies and the promotion of Afrikaans by means of a private higher education institution.

Dutch influence in HAT (1994) Although there is consensus among linguists that Afrikaans and Dutch are related languages, and that Afrikaans originated from 17th century Dutch, the differences between present-day varieties of Afrikaans and Dutch serve as proof that we are dealing with two separate languages. These differences should be clearly visible in descriptive as well as normative sources of the two languages. However, the third edition of Verklarende Handewoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (HAT), one of the leading Afrikaans standard monolingual dictionaries, contains headwords as well as microstructural information that do not agree with the reality of the Afrikaans of today. An empirical investigation conducted among Afrikaans-speaking dictionary users has proven that a significant Dutch influence is still prominent - in the micro- as well as the macrostructure of the dictionary. It is believed that the Dutch "thread" of many Afrikaans dictionaries has indirectly contributed towards the creation of a super-standard norm, which is partially responsible for the estrangement between the cultural language and the vernacular.

Hierdie artikel handel oor Afrikaners se reaksie op die uitdagings wat postapartheid Suid-Afrika sedert 1994 aan die posisie van Afrikaans as amptelike landstaal en ‘n Afrikaner kulturele identiteit gebied het. Afrikaner-reaksie tot die dramatiese veranderinge wat die Suid-Afrikaanse bestel ondergaan het, het veral op twee wyses gemanifesteer. Ten eerste was daar ‘n neiging tot inwaartse, maar veral uitwaartse diaspora. Tweedens is daar pogings om ‘n Afrikaneridentiteit in post-apartheid Suid-Afrika te herdefinieer. In hierdie geval word op drie spesifieke kwessies gefokus, te wete die posisie van Afrikaners in ‘n post-1994 liberale demokrasie, die Afrikaanse taaldebat en Afrikaanse populêre kultuur en die sogenaamde “De la Rey-verskynsel”. Die artikel kom tot die gevolgtrekking dat die handhawing van ‘n Afrikaner-identiteit in oorsese diaspora omstandighede op die lange duur nie volhoubaar is nie. Ook binne Suid-Afrika is Afrikaner kulturele identiteit tans baie vloeibaar. Hesseling: a century laterThe Dutch linguist D.C. Hesseling was a pioneer of creole studies. The first evidence of Hesseling's interest in language contact and creole languages was his publications on Afrikaans. Hesseling formulated the core of his approach to the origin of Afrikaans in an 1897 article and greatly elaborated his ideas on the subject in the book Het Afrikaansch, published in 1899. This was the first truly scientific study of Afrikaans.Hesseling placed emergent Afrikaans within the colonial Dutch contact situation. In his wide-ranging and penetrating sociohistórical analysis of the seventeenth-century language contact situation at the Cape, Hesseling discounted the impact of either Koi or French and German on emergent Afrikaans. He singled out the creole Portuguese introduced by slaves as the main factor in the formation of Afrikaans from colloquial seventeenthcentury Dutch. Some of the issues raised by Hesseling have been hotly disputed, but his approach has remained at the centre of the discourse on Afrikaans historical linguistics.Hesseling's involvement in the diachrony of early Afrikaans was partly stimulated by his passionate interest in the language politics of the emergent Afrikaans standard language. He was the very first linguist of stature to argue for the standardisation of Afrikaans. Moreover, his ideas on the viability of Afrikaans as a local standard language in competition with both English and Dutch have been borne out, though they had been discounted within contemporary Afrikaner Nationalist discourse.

Two matters are considered in this paper.(i) The identification of the first version of Kaaps, the progenitor of Afrikaans. The earliestversion of Kaaps was recorded during the first period of the history of Afrikaans – theperiod prior to 1652. This period commences with the first visits to the Cape by Dutchmariners. The written records of Kaaps dating from that period are older than anyother manifestation of forms in Afrikaans. Some of these early words are currently stillin use among speakers of Kaaps, while others have been incorporated into StandardAfrikaans, or appear in dictionaries and the AWS (Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls –Wordlist and Spelling rules for Afrikaans). Some even continue to survive in the spokenAfrikaans of a number of regional dialects. Reference is also made in this chapter tohow Kaaps eventually developed and played an important role in the shaping of othervarieties of Afrikaans.(ii) The circumstances leading to the incorporation of elements of other varieties into the coredescription of Afrikaans. In describing Afrikaans, language historians usually ask whereparticular words and constructions come from. But the question how is actually ofgreater value when investigating the development of Afrikaans. Ek (I) is a word inKaaps which was, over time, absorbed into general use in Afrikaans. An analysis ofhow this process took place reveals that the ‘how’ questions are of greater importancein the history of the language than the ‘when’ and ‘where’ questions. The true story ofAfrikaans is a socio-historical one. Destigmatization, and the circumstances leading tochanging norms, are evoked by the ‘how’ questions.

Hierdie navorsingsartikel gee ’n oorsig van inligtings-en-kommunikasietegnologie-verwante (IKT-verwante) navorsing in Afrikaans vir die tydperk 2011–2021. Die hoofdoel is om die omvang en fokus van die navorsing wat gedoen is vas te stel. Die metode wat gevolg is, is ’n formele oorsig. Na keuring op grond van tersaaklikheid en wetenskaplikheid is 86 publikasies as deel van die studie ontleed. Die bevindinge toon die jaarlikse publikasietendense, belangrike uitsetpunte en universiteite wat beduidende bydraes gelewer het. Bevindinge toon dat IKT-verwante navorsing in Afrikaans ’n sterk sosiale aard het, met die sosiale konteks van die inligtingstegnologie wat feitlik deurlopend die aard en fokus van die navorsing bepaal. Die hooftema wat uit die navorsing geïdentifiseer en bespreek word, is “aspekte van menswees in die digitale omgewing” met as belangrike subtemas “onderwys en tegnologie” asook “taal as sentrale rolspeler in IKT-verwante navorsing”. Alhoewel meer as 90 navorsers deelgeneem het aan Afrikaanse IKT-verwante navorsing, is dit teleurstellend dat slegs 11 van hierdie navorsers betrokke was by meer as een publikasie. Verder blyk dit dat navorsers in hierdie veld mekaar se Afrikaanse publikasies slegs tot ’n beperkte mate aanhaal. Daar is dus ’n behoefte aan die vestiging van ’n meer omvattende en samehorige wetenskapskultuur rondom hierdie tipe navorsing in Afrikaans. In the increasingly competitive media landscape newspapers, among others, are underpressure from digital and social media. As a result, the performance and positioningof traditional Afrikaans newspapers like Rapport, Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad, aswell as the forms of Afrikaans they use, are constantly scrutinised in surveys about therelevance and profitability of the Afrikaans print media. These surveys often point tothe use of Afrikaans ‘as spoken by the people’ in emerging newspapers like Son andSon op Sondag, as the main reason for the growing popularity, healthy sales figuresand advertising revenue of these two newspapers. As a result, Son developed into thelargest Afrikaans daily in an Afrikaans print market long dominated by establishedtitles like Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad. In view of this, this contribution will firstlyinvestigate the profitability (in monetary terms and circulation) of actually using Kaapsin newspapers. Secondly, it will focus attention on the use of this form of Afrikaansin traditional newspapers in which Standard Afrikaans is the dominant form. Thequestion is: What is the nature of the Kaaps in these newspapers compared to theKaaps in Son specifically? The aim of this contribution is to explore how Afrikaansnewspapers create space for the use of colloquial varieties in general and Kaapsspecifically, and to determine the relevance or function of Kaaps in the news domain.On the one hand the focus will be on columns in which Kaaps is the medium and onthe other, on newspaper articles about the Afrikaans language variety. The data onwhich this paper is based were firstly, the responses to a list of questions posed to thenews-editor of Son, and secondly a critical content analysis and interpretation of themanifestations of Kaaps in this newspaper in comparison to the forms in the moreestablished Afrikaans newspapers. The general perceptions of, and attitudes towards,the use of colloquial varieties of Afrikaans, collated in a 2012 survey among readers,are also taken into account.

Die Afrikaans wat die meeste bruin mense van Suid-Afrika en ook Namibië as huistaal gebruik, is tot op hede wat betref die akoestiese eienskappe van die vokaalsisteem daarvan nog baie afgeskeep. Dit is ten spyte van die feit dat dit ongeveer die helfte van Afrikaans in sy geheel uitmaak. Volgens die 2011-sensus (Stats S.A. 2011) was van die 41 miljoen Suid-Afrikaners 8,9% bruin, net soveel as wit Suid-Afrikaners, wat dit bloot wat getalle betref, noodsaaklik maak om eweseer vakwetenskaplike aandag te kry. (’n Baie klein aantal swart en Indiese inwoners van die land het ook Afrikaans as hulle huistaal.) Bloot deskriptief taaltipologies gesproke is dit natuurlik van die grootste belang dat hierdie variant van Afrikaans die aandag kry wat dit verdien. Die basiese doel van hierdie artikel is om ’n benaming te vind vir die Afrikaans wat deur bruin sprekers as huistaal gebesig word. Ek motiveer die gebruik van die naam Bruinafrikaans. Mens kan op grond van ’n akoestiese beskrywing van die vokaalsisteme van ’n verteenwoordigende groep bruin sprekers met Afrikaans as huistaal ’n begin maak om te bepaal of na hierdie sprekers se taal verwys kan word as Bruinafrikaans, en of daar gespesifiseer sal moet word, byvoorbeeld “die Afrikaans wat deur die bruin sprekers van die Kaapse Vlakte gepraat word”. Dit is van groot belang om sodanige beskrywing van dié belangrike dog verwaarlooste variant ter beskikking te hê, en nie net om puur taalkundige redes nie; dit is meer spesifiek ook in ’n sosiofonetiese raamwerk van groot belang, nie net ten opsigte van die groter Afrikaanse taallandskap nie, maar ook in algemeen-linguistiese belang, aangesien daar ook in internasionale opsig groeiende belangstelling in die Afrikaanse fonologie is. Daar word in hierdie artikel ’n begin gemaak deur te fokus op één vokaal, die lang, lae vokaal in die woord baas. Hierdie vokaal word dikwels op impressionistiese gronde uitgelig as tipies Kaaps, maar ook in ’n groter konteks. Ek gebruik ’n relatief nuwe metode van spraakopnames met behulp van slimfone. Opnames is gemaak in tien gebiede waar Afrikaans oorheersend as huistaal gebruik word (in die Wes-, Oos- en Noord-Kaap, Vrystaat, Noordwes en Namibië). Opnames is per WhatsApp aan my gestuur vir prosessering en ontleding. Die spektrale eienskappe van die vokale (F1 en F2) is onttrek, op grond waarvan die vokale van ongeveer 300 sprekers ontleed en beskryf is. Ontledings toon dat die vokaalsisteem van hierdie sprekers ondersteuning is vir die aanname dat daar wel van Bruinafrikaans as enkele variëteit gepraat kan word. ’n Opmerklike aspek van die spraak van hierdie deelnemers, geoordeel bloot aan die uitspraak van die genoemde vokaal, is die stabiliteit oor tyd heen van hierdie variëteit: Jong en ou sprekers se akoestiese metings toon prakties geen verskil nie, ook nie die uitspraak van manlike en vroulike sprekers nie. Dit is kontra die verwagting in die kader van taalvariasie en -verandering. Laastens is dit duidelik dat dit relatief veilig is om van woordelyste gebruik te maak, en nie van leesstukke soos “Die Noordewind en die Son” nie, wat natuurlik veel meer ekonomies betreffende tyd en koste is. Of the official languages of South Africa, Afrikaans has the widest geographical, demographic and racial distribution (Webb 2003). According to the latest South African census of 2011 (StatsSA 2012), Afrikaans as first language is spoken by 13.5% of the country's inhabitants, only surpassed in numbers by Zulu (22.7%) and Xhosa (16%). In neighbouring Namibia, 10.4% of the population has Afrikaans as their first language. A noteworthy number of recent emigrants to United Kingdom, Australia, Europe and North America are likely to be Afrikaans speakers as well.1 A handful of elderly persons in Patagonia still speak Afrikaans; they are descendants of some 600 Afrikaans speakers who settled in Patagonia at the beginning of the 20th century (Du Toit 1995, Coetzee et al. 2018).

Opsomming Affiksoïede is komponente in komplekse morfologiese konstruksies wat vormlik met bestaande, onafhanklike woorde ooreenstem, maar ’n spesifieke betekenis in bepaalde konstruksies het. In die meeste gevalle hou die betekenis van affiksoïede in affiksoïedkonstruksies nie met die woordeboekbetekenis van die onafhanklike woord verband nie. Voorbeelde van affiksoïede is die prefiksoïede hond÷ en kak÷ in hond÷warm en kak÷mooi onderskeidelik en die suffiksoïed ÷bedonnerd in bybel÷bedonnerd. In die eerste voorbeeld dra hond÷ slegs die betekenis van “baie” tot die konstruksie se betekenis (“baie warm”) by – dit hou geensins met die woordeboekbetekenis van hond as “vierpotige dier” verband nie. In prefiksoïedkonstruksies is die affiksoïed dus die eerste komponent, byvoorbeeld hond÷ en kak÷ in voormelde voorbeelde, terwyl dit by suffiksoïedkonstruksies die tweede komponent is, byvoorbeeld ÷bedonnerd in bybel÷bedonnerd. Prefiksoïede met ’n evaluerende betekenislading word gebruik om intensiverende betekenisse aan te dui, terwyl suffiksoïede se betekenismoontlikhede meer variasie toon en byvoorbeeld na ’n beheptheid met iets of na ’n persoon kan verwys. Literatuur oor prefiksoïede wys op die intensiveringsfunksie daarvan (Hoeksema 2012; Stratton 2020), terwyl studies oor suffiksoïede grootliks op persoonsvormende suffiksoïede soos ÷kop en ÷kous fokus (Ruppenhofer, Wiegand, Wilm en Markert 2018; Wante 2009). Bestaande studies oor affiksoïede is soms taalvergelykend en hoofsaaklik tot die gebruik daarvan in Nederlands, Sweeds en/of Duits beperk (Battefeld, Leuschner en Rawoens 2018; Booij 2010; Booij en Hüning 2014; Ruppenhofer e.a. 2018). In Trollip (2021, 2022) word die betekenismoontlikhede van Afrikaanse affiksoïedkonstruksies beskryf en aan die hand van korpusdata uit die versamelings van die Virtuele Instituut vir Afrikaans (VivA) en konstrukte in die kognitiewe grammatika verklaar. In hierdie artikel is die fokus uitsluitlik op die beskrywing van Afrikaanse prefiksoïede. Hierdie artikel is ’n verwerkte weergawe van die afdeling in Trollip (2022) waarin prefiksoïedkonstruksies in Afrikaans in die breër konteks van Afrikaanse morfologiese evalueringskonstruksies beskryf word. Opsomming Die artikel ondersoek krities die artikulering van ’n begeerte na progressiewe verandering in die Afrikaanse taal- en letterkunde deur opkomende akademici. Twee sleutelontwikkelings het die afgelope paar jaar om so ’n begeerte vorm aangeneem, naamlik die Ontlaering-projek, wat op verskeie kongresse en spesiale uitgawes van vaktydskrifte uitgeloop het, en die Sitkamer-podsending, wat as ’n informele gespreksruimte oor Afrikaans en die Afrikaanse letterkunde dien. Die begrip kolonialeske word as kritiese leesbril ingespan. Kolonialeske verwys na ’n diskursiewe verskynsel waar akademici sonder historiese begronding in ’n vakgebied eksplisiet progressiewe ideale deur hulle intellektuele werk nastreef – en as gevolg van die gebrek aan kundigheid tot hoogs foutiewe gevolgtrekkings kom. Die verhouding tussen akademikus en die navorsingstradisie verteenwoordig gevolglik ’n vorm van kolonialisme. Deur te fokus op diskoerse wat deur lede van die Ontlaering-projek en die Sitkamer-podsending – waarvan die meerderheid lede by beide betrokke is – aangedryf word wys die artikel op die problematiek van opkomende Afrikaanse akademici wanneer hulle hulself aan kolonialeske kennisvorming, identiteitsvorming en netwerkvorming skuldig maak. Eastern Cape Afrikaans (Oosgrensafrikaans): as concept too exclusive?Based upon historic-geographical considerations Van Rensburg (1984:514; 1989:436-467; 1990:66-67) distinguishes three early varieties of Afrikaans, i.e. Eastern Cape Afrikaans (Oosgrensafrikaans), Cape Afrikaans (Kaapse Afrikaans) and Orange River Afrikaans (Oranjerivierafrikaans). Standard Afrikaans is then considered to be based upon Eastern Cape Afrikaans. In the light of especially this last claim, the theoretical status of Eastern Cape Afrikaans becomes of paramount importance in any study delving into the development of the Afrikaans language.This article discusses the outcome of a critical analysis of relevant literature dealing with particularly Eastern Cape Afrikaans. The outcome of this analysis has indicated that the theoretical basis upon which the positing of Eastern Cape Afrikaans as an early separate variety of Afrikaans has been based, has serious theoretical flaws. A critical shortcoming of the present hypothesis bears upon the assumed geographical positioning of Eastern Cape Afrikaans. A culturally and numerically important component of the Cape Colony's burger population is seemingly not accounted for.It is suggested that the possibility of broadening the geographical base of Eastern Cape Afrikaans should be considered. Serious empirical research should also be undertaken before any claim regarding the genealogy of Standard Afrikaans could be considered at all.

The present study investigates linguistic relativity. The units of writing investigated are e and en, which are used to represent units of language in Dutch, Frisian, and Afrikaans. Dutch has homographic forms in the plural suffix -en and the linking element of noun-noun compounds en. Frisian does not have homography of this kind, while Afrikaans has a different homography. This raises the question whether second language learners of Dutch consistently interpret the linking en in Dutch noun-noun compounds as plural in the way that native speakers do. Plurality ratings for Dutch modifiers obtained from native Dutch speakers are compared with ratings from Frisian-Dutch bilinguals and Afrikaaners learning Dutch as L2. Significant differences relating to orthography are observed. We therefore argue that differing orthographic conventions in one’s native language (L1) can lead to different interpretations for the same everyday words written in Dutch (L2). Orthography thus provides an example of linguistic relativity. Eastern Cape Afrikaans (Oosgrensafrikaans) theoretically evaluatedBased upon linguistic and geographical considerations the historiography of Afrikaans distinguishes between three early historic varieties. Apart from the two contact varieties, Cape Afrikaans (Kaapse Afrikaans) and Orange River Afrikaans (Oranjerivierafrikaans), Eastern Cape Afrikaans is considered to be primarily a continuous development of seventeenth-century Dutch and constitutes the dialectic basis of Standard Afrikaans. As such, Eastern Cape Afrikaans has acquired a central position as theoretical concept within the historiography of Afrikaans.The use of such a term presupposes the existence of a fairly homogeneous historic variety which systematically differed from other varieties of Afrikaans. In this article it will be argued that positing Eastern Cape Afrikaans as a separate historic variety has severe theoretical constraints and that such a claim can not - beyond doubt - be established empirically.

Hierdie artikel is die tweede van ’n tweeluik oor die opkoms en beoordeling van die verskynsel van die internasionale wedloop op universiteitsranglere. Die eerste artikel het ’n oorsig en besinning oor die opkoms van die verskynsel van internasionale universiteitsranglere gebied. Die doel van hierdie tweede artikel is om die resultate van die eerste artikel te gebruik as basis om die posisie van Suid-Afrikaanse universiteite, tans en 10 jaar gelede, op verskeie gesaghebbende internasionale universiteitsranglere – Academic Ranking of World Universities, Times Higher Education, Quacquarelli Symonds en die ranglere van die Spanish National Research Council – te beoordeel. In die ondersoek het ek hierdie ranglere as bronbasis gebruik en vergelykende en internasionale opvoedkunde as metode van dataverwerking en interpretasie aangewend. Die ondersoek het bevind dat, gegewe die professionele omgewing waarbinne Suid-Afrikaanse akademici hulle bevind, openbare Suid-Afrikaanse universiteite besonder goed op internasionale ranglere presteer. Terselfdertyd is dit kommerwekkend dat die top- Suid-Afrikaanse universiteit die afgelope 10 jaar merkbaar teruggesak het op hierdie ranglere. Dit is egter gebiedend noodsaaklik dat die prestasie van Suid-Afrikaanse universiteite as kleinood bewaar word en daar selfs na verbetering gestreef word. In hierdie verband word aanbevelings gemaak ten opsigte van elkeen van die groepe wat ’n belang het by die wel en weë van die universiteitswese in Suid-Afrika: die regering, die Departement van Hoër Onderwys en Opleiding, universiteitsbesture, die studentekorps en akademiese personeel. Die resultate van hierdie ondersoek lewer ook ’n besondere perspektief op voortgesette ongelykhede in die Suid-Afrikaanse hoëronderwyssektor en die nimmereindigende diskoers oor die kwessie van Afrikaans as taalmedium. Hierdie perspektiewe word kortliks aangestip. Nog ’n bevinding van dié navorsing is dat internasionale ranglere die voortgesette ongelykheid binne die Suid-Afrikaanse universiteitsektor onderstreep. Die argument dat Afrikaans as voertaal aan universiteite geskrap moet word omdat dit die internasionale posisie van universiteite sou benadeel, kan nie deur hierdie navorsing gesteun word nie.

Ideological norm replacement and the Afrikaans desk dictionary of the ninetiesIn South Africa the past decade has been marked by extensive sociopolitical changes and by concomitant linguistic changes. These changes may be regarded as instances of norm replacement - a process during the course of which a norm or a set of norms is gradually replaced by another norm or set of norms. It is maintained that the standard synchronic dictionaries of a language not only have the obligation to reflect lexicalised norm replacements, but also to make projections with regard to future use. Two standard synchronic desk dictionaries of Afrikaans, namely the eighth edition of Verklarende Afrikaanse Woordeboek (1992) and the third edition of Verklarende Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (1994) are explored with special regard to their reflection of norm replacements within the domains of race and political ideology. It is shown that the compilers of these dictionaries consciously and sincerely aimed at removing all racial bias but that they failed to record the diversity of meaning within the political lexicon and the semantic shifts which have occurred within that lexicon during the past decade.

Without trying to distinguish between the subject Afrikaans and the language Afrikaans, and without denying the metaphoric meaning of a statement like ‘Afrikaans is oppressive’, this article investigates the position of Afrikaans among the other ten main languages of South Africa. The idea that Afrikaans is a mere minority language in South Africa is repudiated. Statistical figures indicate that Afrikaans is the language with the largest number of speakers and the third largest mother longue in South Africa. The question as to why Afrikaans is regarded as a minority language - even by its own users - is also touched upon. In this article it is argued that the political system of apartheid has split the language community into two parts and that therefore this community has never been a unity. The future role of Afrikaans in a democratic South Africa will also be determined by the users of Afrikaans, given that the Afrikaans language community could be consolidated. This article argues that the lack of unity within the Afrikaans speech community is mainly the reason for the belief that Afrikaans is, in a statistical sense, a minority language. I f the Afrikaans speech community can be consolidated, Afrikaans will be able to take its natural place among the other ten languages of South Africa. Such a consolidation, however, has to be brought about by those who form this community.

Opsomming In hierdie artikel word verslag gelewer oor ’n ondersoek na die verskillende vertaalmetodes wat deur Afrikaanstaalverwerwingstudente op tersiêre vlak gebruik word. Die deelnemers was eerstejaar- Afrikaanstaalverwerwingstudente van 2022 wat vir die module Afrikaanse Taalverwerwing 188 aan die Departement Afrikaans en Nederlands van die Universiteit Stellenbosch geregistreer was. Etiese toestemming is vanaf Stellenbosch Universiteit verkry, aangesien daar met Afrikaanstaalverwerwingstudente van die universiteit gewerk word.1 Om die rol van vertaalmetodes in Afrikaanstaalverwerwing te ondersoek, is drie navorsingsterreine ondersoek, naamlik vertaling, taalverwerwing en woordeskataanleer deur veral op die volgende te fokus: vertaalmetodes, die tweedetaalverwerwingsteorie van Krashen, en die woordeskataanleerproses. ’n Gemengdemetodebenadering met kwalitatiewe en kwantitatiewe metodes is gevolg. Die kwalitatiewe studie ondersoek die argumente vir en teen die gebruik van vertaling in die tweedetaalklaskamer deur middel van ’n literatuurstudie. Verder is ’n kwantitatiewe studie onderneem om te bepaal van watter vertaalmetodes Afrikaanstaalverwerwingstudente gebruik maak. Dit is ondersoek deur verskillende vertaalaktiwiteite in die vorm van verskillende tekstipes aan die studente te gee om te vertaal. Die studente het voorts as deel van die kwantitatiewe studie ’n vraelys voltooi om hulle menings oor vertaling as taalverwerwingshulpbron te kry. Die fokus van die navorsing waarvan hierdie artikel verslag lewer, is gemik op die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks, aangesien daar min sodanige navorsing bestaan wat verband hou met en gebaseer is op die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks. In die lig hiervan behoort ’n ondersoek na hoe en hoe dikwels tweedetaalstudente van Afrikaans op tersiêre vlak in die tweedetaalklaskamer van vertaling gebruik maak, nuttige insigte op te lewer ten opsigte van watter vertaalmetodes dié studente gebruik het en of hulle metodes van internasionale tendense verskil. Dit kan voorts daartoe lei dat vertaling as pedagogiese hulpmiddel in die Afrikaanstaalverwerwingsklas gebruik kan word. Die artikel beoog om dosente wat Afrikaanstaalverwerwing aanbied te help bepaal hoe Afrikaans deur middel van vertaalmetodes aangeleer kan word en hoe vertaalmetodes as onderrighulpmiddel by bestaande onderrigpraktyke ingesluit kan word om die onderrig van Afrikaanstaalverwerwing te verbeter en te vergemaklik. Dit het dus nodig geword om ernstig te besin òf en hoe Afrikaanse kinder- en jeugliteratuur die gekleurde kind en ook die swart kind wat Afrikaans as 'n tweede of derde taal lees, aanspreek. Daar moet gevra word of die beeld van die swarte in die Afrikaanse kinder- en jeugliteratuur die swart/bruin kind se selfbeeld opbou. Maak dit horn trots om homself te wees, of dehumaniseer dit hom deurdat hy verneder word?

An investigation into a methodology: the adaptation of a complex Afrikaans novel into a screenplay Very few Afrikaans films are currently being produced. One of the possible reasons for this phenomenon could be that very few Afrikaans screenplays are written nowadays. There are, however, some good Afrikaans novels which could conceivably become commercially successful films, provided they were properly adapted into screenplays. In this article, the methodology that was used by an aspiring Afrikaans screenwriter to adapt the Afrikaans novel, “Die swye van Mario Salviati”, by Etienne van Heerden, into a screenplay, is discussed. The purpose of this study was to investigate a particular writing method that can be used by screenwriters to adapt an Afrikaans novel into a screenplay. The investigation included a practical application, giving the writer an opportunity to test the validity of the methodology. The various phases of the investigation and the adaptation itself are discussed in the article, and the efficacy of the methodology is evaluated.

The primary goal in the establishment of RAU in 1968 was the educational advancement of the white Afrikaans speaker on the Witwatersrand. A secondary goal was the development of white Afrikaans identity in higher education through the use of the Afrikaans language and Christian religion. This was done by means of academic and scientific programmes. The Afrikaner culture in its entirety had to be nurtured. Although the RAU, for the majority of white Afrikaans speakers, represented a momentous time in terms of its creation history and architectural design it also had its main aim the moulding of a new modern Afrikaans identity. The perceived struggling “Boer” – “proletarian” and working class character of the white Afrikaans speaker had to make way for an emerging middle class: modern and sophisticated. In this article, light is shed on the role of especially language and religion in developing a modern white Afrikaans identity at RAU, later renamed the University of Johannesburg.

In 1994 is 'n nuwe nasionale taalbeleid gepromulgeer, en in plaas van die vorige twee offisiële tale, Engels en Afrikaans, is 11 offisiële tale amptelik verklaar. Voorgangers van die finale Grondwet van 1996 (die ANC Handves van Menseregte (1990) en die tussentydse Grondwet (1993) maak dit baie duidelik dat inheemse tale bevorder and ontwikkel moet word. Hierdie besluit het belangrike implikasies vir die Nasionale Weermag gehad, waar, soos algemeen aanvaar is, Afrikaans die de facto taal vir alle aspekte van militêre lewe was. As gevolg van massiewe demografiese veranderinge, was transformasie noodsaaklik. Hierdie verslag rapporteer oor taalhoudings en taalpraktyk by 6SAI in die Ooskaap, en dit kyk krities na hierdie aangeleenthede in die lig van die nasionale taalplan as geheel. Opsomming Hierdie artikel is die eerste van ’n drieluik wat verslag lewer oor ’n navorsingstudie wat deur die eerste skrywer vir ’n doktorale studie1 onderneem is. Dit sit die navorsingsmetodologie vir die studie uiteen. Die tweede artikel verskaf die teoretiese begronding van ’n gespelifieerde2 uitspraaktoepassingsmodel vir Engelssprekende studente3 wat Afrikaans as ’n vreemde taal4 aanleer.5 In die derde artikel plaas ons die fokus op die model waarop ’n gespelifieerde uitspraaktoepassing ontwerp kan word. Die navorsingsmetodologie – die kern van hierdie artikel – behels die bespreking van die navorsingsontwerp wat gevolg is, die data-insamelingsmetodes en navorsingsinstrumente, geldigheid en betroubaarheid van die ingesamelde data, en breedvoerige beskrywing van die deelnemers. Ons het om die nodige etiese klaring aansoek gedoen om dié empiriese studie te onderneem. The transformation of Afrikaans - a review of the media debate of the last decadeThis article focuses on the language debate concerning the position and status of Afrikaans. This debate has mainly been conducted in Afrikaans newspapers during the past ten years. The apparent trends of the debate are interpreted against the background of transformation as a key concept. Apart from a brief theoretical investigation of the theory of social change, this article explores the applicability of these theoretical parameters on the transformation process to which Afrikaans has been subjected during the last decade. The article aims to demonstrate that the media debate on Afrikaans which has been conducted by members of the Afrikaans speech community is not unique but illustrates responses typical of all transforming societies regardless of time and space.

In this article Afrikaans literary historiography is analysed by means of the discourse-analytical tradition associated with the name of Michel Foucault. Approaching Afrikaans literary historiography as a discursive formation makes it possible to argue that the nationalist-teleological character of the historiography has led to the marginalisation of a number of Afrikaans literary traditions. This argument then identifies the reclamation of these marginalised literary traditions as one of the most pressing tasks of Afrikaans literary historiography, Foucauldian discourse theory is finally used with reference to the alternative conception of history which accompanies it to suggest a solution to the problem of these marginalised Afrikaans literary traditions.

Just like the Afrikaans language itself, the use of Afrikaans as a technical language in Botany made meaningful progress during the last 75 years. It cannot, however, be divorced from the general use of Afrikaans by the Afrikaner in his daily contact with his non-Afrikaans speaking compatriots in all other spheres of activities, such as business, sports or politics. Unless Afrikaans as a spoken language can hold its own in a growing English-speaking community and world, it will not survive as a technical scientific language in Botany. As a technical language only, no language can hold its own. The publishing of scientific papers in international journals by Afrikaans-speaking scientists cannot be attributed to selfishness or a lack of appreciation for their mother tongue. It must also be seen as a means of enhancing the scientific image of his country and of the Afrikaner.

Afrikaans and English television news started in 1975 with equal airtime. In 1996 afteran SABC policy change, the Afrikaans TV news bulletin was relegated to a lesser andinfrequent time slot. There are also indications that economy of language played amajor role in the re-establishment of a regular time slot for Afrikaans television news.Economy of language is a field of study probing the relationship between linguistic andeconomic variables. The role of language in people’s involvement in the economy isdiverse but fundamental. On the one hand language empowers or disempowers peopleto join the national economy, and on the other hand people’s language preferencessometimes determine their consumer decisions. The SABC’s Afrikaans television news isa prime example of language preference becoming an economic determinant.

In contrast to English, automatic hyphenation by computer of Afrikaans words is a problem that still needs to be addressed, since errors are still often encountered in printed text. An initial step in this task is the ability to automatically syllabify words. Since new words are created continuously by joining words, it is necessary to develop an “intelligent” technique for syllabification. As a first phase of the research, we consider only the orthographic information of words, and disregard both syntactic and morphological information. This approach allows us to use machine-learning techniques such as artificial neural networks and decision trees that are known for their pattern recognition abilities. Both these techniques are trained with isolated patterns consisting of input patterns and corresponding outputs (or targets) that indicate whether the input pattern should be split at a certain position, or not. In the process of compiling a list of syllabified words from which to generate training data for the syllabification problem, irregular patterns were identified. The same letter patterns are split differently in different words and complete words that are spelled identically are split differently due to meaning. We also identified irregularities in and between the different dictionaries that we used. We examined the influence range of letters that are involved in irregularities. For example, for their in agter-ente and vaste-rente we have to consider three letters to the left of r to be certain where the hyphen should be inserted. The influence range of the k in verstek-waarde and kleinste-kwadrate is four to the left and three to the right. In an analysis of letter patterns in Afrikaans words we found that the letter e has the highest frequency overall (16,2% of all letters in the word list). The frequency of words starting with s is the highest, while the frequency of words ending with e is the highest. It is important to note that the frequency of words ending with s is even higher than for words starting with s. The two and three letter patterns that occur most are er (10% of all two letter patterns) and ing (4% of all three letter patterns). In an analysis of syllables in Afrikaans words, we found that (as for complete words) syllables most often start with the letter s and end with e, while the frequency of syllables ending with s is almost as high as the frequency of syllables starting with s. This indicates that problems with hyphenation can be expected around the letter s. The two and three letter syllables that occur most often are -ge- and -ver-, respectively.In an attempt to decide on the window length to use to generate training data for machine-learning techniques we also analysed the length of syllables. The results show that two and three letter syllables occur most often, but that four letter syllables have the most unique instances. We also analysed a spectrum of window configurations and found that the ideal configuration will have to be determined empirically. One major problem we identified in this study is that irregular syllabification often occurs where letter patterns include the letter s. The reasons being (i) the use of the combining s when joining words, (ii) almost equal frequencies of syllables starting and ending with s and (iii) vague hyphe- nation rules for letter combinations containing s. To effectively address automatic syllabification in Afrikaans, it is necessary to develop more sophisticated methods to handle vagueness around the letter s.

The article maps the process by means of which the versification of the Hebrew Psalms in Afrikaans, with its goal of acceptance by the relevant clerical bodies and their ecclesiastical community as a whole, ran its course. The process is illustrated by the history of the two versifications officially commissioned and approved by the mainstream Afrikaans churches, namely those of Totius (professor J D du Toit) and professor T T Cloete, more than half a century separated in time and trend (1937 and 2001 respectively). In view of the fact that both versifiers, as well as professor Lina Spies and dr. Antjie Krog who additionally contributed versifications of a few Psalms, are high profile poets, the evaluation of their work does not only take into account the factor of veracity (compliance with the Hebrew original), but also that of linguistic and stylistic excellence, the Psalms being regarded as poetry.
