This article challenges the widely held view that slave prices in Africa fell substantially and permanently after Britain abolished its slave trade in 1807. Examination of slave-price data shows that, when allowance is made for movements in prices of trade goods bartered for slaves, real slave prices fell sharply between 1807 and 1820 but that the fall was confined to West Africa. The first written record of galvanizing describes how a French chemist named Melouin presented a method of coating iron by immersing it in molten zinc to the French Royal Academy in 1742. Sorel, another French chemist patented a process for coating iron with zinc after preparing it with 9% sulfuric acid followed by fluxing with ammonium chloride. Great Britain granted a patent for a similar process in 1837. By 1850, galvanizing had become a generally accepted practice for the protection of iron and steel with 10,000 tons of zinc per year used for the protection steel.

This paper studies the long-run effects of concertaje, a forced labor system from the Spanish colonial era in Ecuador that coerced indigenous workers in rural estates after indebting them. I collected and digitized historical tax records (1800) and connected them to contemporary ones (2010s) via surnames.
