Abstract:
By researching the life and work of Thomas Baines (1820 - 1875) in relation to a broader discourse of painting and the lived experience of being a 'white' male in a post-apartheid South Africa, I explore the ways in which this figure from the past has provoked the three series of artworks I have produced for my Master of Fine Art exhibition. This study has been divided into two parts, represented by the two chapters contained herein. Chapter One includes a critical retelling of Baines' biography and a discussion of the primary ways in which I have engaged with both the life and the working pra

Background Depression is known to be common after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and associated with worse functional and psychosocial outcomes. However, there remains considerable uncertainty over the exact prevalence of the condition. Aims The aim of this study was to accurately assess the prevalence of post TBI depression and its changes over a period of one year. The associated demographic and injury features were also examined for possible association with risk of depression in the hope that those with higher susceptibility to depression may be identified. This thesis provides a new consideration of the late twelfth-century legal treatise commonly known as Glanvill. Detailed analysis of the extant Glanvill manuscripts has enabled a number of important new conclusions about the nature of the treatise itself and its textual history and development over time relative to the changing common law. The function and ongoing usage of the treatise are discussed in detail and conclusions are drawn about how, when and why the treatise continued to be copied and/or engaged with and what this may reveal about the history of the English common law.
