Evidence of a genetic cline for Sardina pilchardus along the Northwest African coast. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 264–271. In all, 700 Sardina pilchardus from 14 locations throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean Moroccan coastlines were screened for eight enzymatic loci that show polymorphism. Analysis of allelic frequencies showed a genetic break in the area of the Bay of Agadir, segregating two groups of samples, confirmed by analysis of molecular variance; a first consisting of Sidi Ifn

The wastewater treatment by infiltration-percolation plant at Ben Sergao (a suburb of Agadir, Morocco) foreshadows the installation which will be able to be built for Greater Agadir (first fraction: 40,000 m3/d). The present plant treats 1,000 m3/d of highly concentrated raw effluents which after being decanted in an anaerobic stabilization pond are infiltrated into 5 infiltration basins of 1,500 m2 each, constituted by a bed 2 metres thick of eolian sand drained at its base. The decanted water infiltrates at the rate of one metre per day. With this process 100 % of the suspended matter, and 9

The present study aims to evaluate the initial health status of two stations receiving seawater desalination plants in Agadir Bay (Tifnit-Douira and Cap Ghir) and to assess their potential environmental impact on the marine ecosystem health. Six pairs of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were collected at six sampling sites on a monthly basis over two years. Each pair was homogenized to obtain the postmitochondrial fractions (S9). Toxicological effects were measured using a multibiomarker approach based on either acetylcholinesterase (AChE), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), a

We measured water influx and efflux rates and field metabolic rates with doubly-labelled water, sodium fluxes with radiosodium, and osmotic status (plasma osmotic and ionic concentrations) in free-ranging adults of both sexes, as well as juveniles. On October 10, 1980, the town of El-Asnam (130,000 inhabitants) and villages within a 50 km radius (229,000 inhabitants) were 80% destroyed by an earthquake of intensity 7.5 on the Richter scale (Figure l). The first unofficial estimates reported 50,000 dead and 100,000 injured. These numbers were probably based on data from the Agadir earthquake of February 29, 1960, when 12,000 out of the 30,000 inhabitants were killed. The official figures now list for the El-Asnam earthquake 2,600 dead and 8,250 injured. That was nevertheless a sufficiently heavy toll to fully justify the volume of relief

On the basis of morphological characters, we assign it provisionally to genus Calotes and it seems to represent a hitherto undescribed species. Sex chromosomes in some reptiles share synteny with distantly related amniotes in regions orthologous to squamate chromosome 2. The latter finding suggests that chromosome 2 was formerly part of a larger ancestral (amniote) super-sex chromosome and raises questions about how sex chromosomes are formed and modified in reptiles. Australian dragon lizards (Agamidae) are emerging as an excellent model for studying these processes. In particular, they exhibit both genotypic (GSD) and temperature-dependent (TSD) sex determination, show evidence of transitions between the two modes and have evolved n
