Swart, Belinda. "The phylogeography of the southern rock agama (Agama atra) in the Cape Fold Mountains, South Africa." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/21762.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An understanding of the phylogeography and evolutionary processes involved in speciation is essential for the conservation and management of any particular species. To investigate the phylogeographic patterns in Agama atra from the Cape Fold Mountains (CFM), 98 individuals from 38 geographically close localities were analysed. In addition, to understand the phylogeographic associations between the CFM populations and the rest of Southern Africa, 18 specimens from 12 localities outside the CFM were also included. A total of 988 characters derived from two mitochondrial DNA fragments (control region and ND2) revealed 59 distinct haplotypes in the CFM. Parsimony, Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses revealed four distinct clades associated with geography within the CFM. These clades were supported by a haplotype network and were defined as the Cape Peninsula clade, the Limietberg clade, the northern CFM clade and the central CFM clade. Analysis of molecular variance confirmed the high degree of genetic structure within the CFM, with more than 75% of genetic variation found among the geographic areas. SAMOVA and nested clade analysis (NCA) suggest that the central CFM clade may be more diverse than detected by the networks and the phylogenetic analyses. The processes that caused the four distinct genetic groups in the CFM are not yet clear. Using a speculative molecular clock estimate, the main cladogenesis of A. atra within the CFM took place, approximately ~6.5 - 9 MYA. This dating coincides well with the documented Miocene-Pliocene climate fluctuations which might have contributed towards the isolation among lineages. The genetic structure found in A. atra is also markedly congruent with what has been found in other taxa such as Mesamphisopus spesies, Potamonautes brincki, and Pedioplanis burchelli and this would further support vicariance as a main isolating factor here.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ‘n Goeie begrip van die filogeografie en die evolusionêre gebeurtenisse wat verband hou met spesiasie is belangrik vir die bewaring en bestuur van enige spesie.

The present work consists in a study of the figure of Mara, god of love and death, who represents the buddhistic symbol of evil. It has been noticed for a long time that the latter includes all an allegory strictly in conformity with the buddhistic doctrines. However, we are not yet familiar with the personage himself. The matter in question is to study especially the nature, the part, the signification of Mara within the four agama, considered as one of the most important collections of the ancient buddhistic literature

Abstract:
The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, AGATA, is a European project aimed at constructing a next-generation gamma-ray spectrometer for nuclear structure studies. The completed array will consist of a 47f shell of 180 highly segmented HPGe detectors arranged into 60 triple clusters. The array will be instrumented with state of the art digital electronics, and will apply Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) and Gamma-Ray Tracking (GRT) algorithms to achieve high efficiency while maintaining the excellent peak-to-total ratio of current escape-suppressed spectrometers. Vital to the successful application of PSA is the establishment of a pulse shape database describing the signal shape produced by interactions at each point in the detectors volume. Electric field simulations have been developed within the AGATA collaboration to provide this signal basis but it is necessary that they are tested against experimental measurements. Characterisation measurements were performed on asymmetric AGATA capsule C00l using the Liverpool scanning system and state-of-the-art digital electronics. A highly collimated beam of 662ke V gamma rays was scanned across the detector and single and coincident trigger modes were used to measure the response due to gamma rays interacting at precisely determined points within the detector. These signals were then compared with signals produced by the electric field simulations Multi Geometry Simulation (MGS) and JAVA AGATA Signal Simulation (JASS) and an assessment made of their performance. Position resolutions of 7.8mm and 8.4mm have been measured when performing PSA with MGS and JASS respectively. These values are larger than expected and an attempt has been made to understand the reasons for this. In addition, measurements have been carried out to assess the electronics response function of the detector and associated electronics. The results of these characterisation measurements will be used by the AGATA collaboaration to refine the online PSA and GRT algorithms used with the array.

Abstract:
The Advanced GAmma 'Iracking Array (AGATA) is a European project that is aiming to construct a complete 411' High Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometer for nuclear structure studies at future Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) Facilities. The proposed array will utilise digital electronics, Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) and Gamma-Ray 'Iracking (GRT) algorithms, to overcome the limited efficiencies encountered by current Escape Suppressed Spectrometers (ESS), whilst maintaining the high Peak-to-Tot~l ratio. Iiiji 1.j Two AGATA symmetrical segmented Canberra Eurisys (CE) prototype HPGe detectors have been tested at the University of Liverpool. A highly collimated 137Cs (662keV) beam was raster scanned across each detector and data were collected in both singles and coincidence modes. The charge sensitive preamplifier output pulse shapes from all 37 channels (one for each of the 36 segments and one for the centre contact) were digitised and stored for off-line analysis. The shapes of the real charge and image charge pulses have been studied to give detailed information on the position dependent response of each detector. The singles data has enabled the investigation of the detector response through the bulk crystal. The coincidence data has been utilised to validate the electric field simulation code 11ulti Geometry Simulation (:MGS). The precisely determined 3D interaction positions have allowed the comparison of experimental pulse shapes from single site interactions with those generated by the simulation. The data sets have also been utilised to validate the efficacy of the scanning procedure for producing comparable data sets for consecutive detectors. The absolute position sensitivity has been evaluated.

Abstract:
The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) project is an European collabora- tion project that is aiming to construct a next generation gamma-ray spectrometer for nuclear-structure applications. The final array will consist of 180 highly-segmented HPGe detectors mounted into 60 triple clusters forming a full 4π shell. AGATA will utilise pulse-shape analysis and gamma-ray tracking to achieve high photopeak efficiency and peak-to-total. Central to the AGATA spectrometer is the Nouvelle Ac- quisition temps-Réel Version 1.2 Avec Linux (NARVAL) data-acquisition system that will perform pulse-shape analysis and gamma-ray tracking calculations in real time (online). The system is comprised of separate blocks of actions, called actors. Each one containing a self-sufficient piece of code designed for a specific action. AGATA data can be downloaded and replayed through an offline version of NARVAL, known as the NARVAL-emulator. With a new format and techniques there is need to define new methodology to analyse the data. Discussed in the first part of this work will be processing of AGATA data and how by utilising the actors of the NARVAL-emulator different output formats can be chosen. In the next part of this work, the Compton polarimetry capability of an AGATA triple cluster will be investigated by utilising pulse-shape analysis and the detector’s granularity. The basic design of a Compton polarimeter consists of two detectors; one acting as a scatterer and the second as a absorber. The same principles apply to an AGATA triple cluster with each sector act- ing as the scatterer and absorber. The pulse-shape analysis algorithm identifies the positions and energies of the interaction points. Data was obtained from the heavy- ion fusion-evaporation of 110Pd (32S,4n) 138Sm at 135 MeV was used to investigate the Compton polarimetry capability of an AGATA triple cluster. This work utilised the phenomenon that the scattering cross-section for gamma rays is larger in the direction perpendicular to its electric field vector than parallel. This is described by the differ- ential Compton scattering cross-section for polarised gamma rays. A useful event to determine linear polarisation occurs if the incident gamma ray is Compton scattered from the first interaction and then fully absorbed at the second interaction. The sum of the energies deposited in the two interactions gives the energy while the azimuthal scattering angle contains the linear polarisation information. To determine the linear polarisation of a gamma ray, a polarisation sensitivity and asymmetry measurement can be made. Such measurements were made in this work using gamma rays from 138Sm of known linear polarisations. The polarisation sensitivity method utilised the incident and scattered gamma-ray energy, in addition to the azimuthal scattering an- gle information produced from the pulse-shape analysis algorithm. The experimental polarisation sensitivities ranged from 5.0±0.3% at 139.7 keV to 16.4±0.1% at 1287 keV. A asymmetry measurement was carried by determining the number of gamma rays that scattered perpendicular and parallel to the reaction plane. A positive asym- metry would indicate an electric transition and a negative a magnetic one. It was found that there was partial consistency with expectation. From the asymmetry and polarisation sensitivity measurement an experimental linear polarisation for each gamma ray was determined. The result should be in the range −1≤P(θγ)≤+1 with the sign propagating through from the asymmetry measurement. Finally a coinci- dence efficiency and figure of merit was measured and are given as 32.6±1.0% and 3.9±0.2%, respectively at 346.9 keV. Overall it was concluded that there was limited Compton polarimetry capability and proposed reasons for this were discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the improvement of software tools and methods for analyzing high resolution γ-ray spectroscopy data of intermediate energy Coulomb excitation experiments at the PreSPEC-AGATA setup. In the past, pioneering experiments have been done in the RISING campaign at GSI. The PreSPEC-AGATA setup has been the next step in the evolution of this type of experiments, with better and more complex instrumentation, leading to higher sensitivity and resolution. This work is relevant for for the preparation of the even more demanding future HISPEC setup at the upcoming FAIR facility. HISPEC experiments will study low-lying excited states of nuclei far from stability, in order to test the validity of nuclear structure models in that area of the nuclear chart. More complex instrumentation results in more complex data analysis programs. In order to deal with the complexity involved in developing such software for the upcoming experiments, a more systematic approach to the development process is needed. Within this work, a software framework was developed to facilitate a systematic and clean software design. This might be helpful for upcoming NUSTAR experiments at FAIR, where a large number of independent detector systems have to be integrated into a big setup. The design of the framework is discussed in the second chapter of this thesis. One important reaction mechanism for the HISPEC experiments is Coulomb excitation at energies of around 150 MeV/u. Because of the purely electromagnetic nature of the interaction, Coulomb excitation is described well by theoretical models. In the third chapter of this thesis, a numerical simulation program for relativistic ion-ion collisions was developed that solves the coupled channel equations for electric Coulomb excitation. In the fourth chapter, the relevant detector systems of the PreSPEC setup are presented, and the calibration of them is discussed. A main aspect of the work was the development of improved ways to analyze data from these devices, and, if possible to provide semi-automatic implementations for their calibration. In the last chapter, the total efficiency of the PreSPEC-setup was determined for a typical Coulomb excitation experiment, and the possibility to measure projectile excitation cross-sections relative to a target excitation cross-section is demonstrated.

The purpose of this project was to analyze data from an experiment carried out at LNL (Legnaro National Laboratories) in order to test the collective nuclear model. In the experiment 170Dy was created by multi-nucleon transfer reactions. This isotope is predicted to be the most collective of all nuclei with A &lt; 190. γ-ray energies originating from its deexcitation allow to measure its collectivity. The PRISMA spectrometer was used to determine which ions were produced in the reactions and AGATA measured the γ-radiation from these products. The analysis consists of a calibration process of all detectors and eventually leads to the identication of 170Dy and of its deexcitation energies. This report explains the analysis procedure and some of the steps to identify the reaction prodcuts and corresponding γ-ray energies were performed. Xe-isotopes and corresponding γ-spectra have been identied.

Abstract:
AGATA is the European project for a 4π gamma-ray tracking array of Ge detectors and is expected to have a detection sensitivity three orders of magnitude larger than the presently in use gamma spectrometers. Tracking systems are working in position sensitive mode and the obtaining of a position resolution of a few millimeters through Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) is essential. The aim of this Thesis is to develop and test a PSA method for AGATA. The gamma interactions in the Ge crystals are localized by decomposing the detector signal in a basis of reference signals, characterizing the crystal. The problem is reduced to a large system of linear equations, which is solved in the least-squares sense using mainly matrix inversion. We have tested out method using both simulated and experimental signals measured with a prototype AGATA capsule. We have obtained average positional erros of 1 - 2 mm with simulated single interactions, which shows that our method is well suited for its purpose.

Abstract:
In preparation for the AGATA campaign at GSI, a set of simulation tools to be utilised with the AGATA simulation code has been developed, enabling the response of the proposed AGATA geometries for use at GSI to be simulated following a relativistic Coulomb excitation reaction. The γ-ray tracking algorithms, crucial to the performance of AGATA, have previously been untested in a relativistic environment with high levels of background, and as a result has been evaluated in a variety of simulated conditions with varying levels of background. To assess the performance of the γ-ray tracking algorithms, the γ-ray spectra of the RISING array from a recent PreSPEC experiment (Experiment S377 in May 2011) has been compared with a simulation, in order to determine the simulation input that provided a similar spectral response. The optimum simulation input was then used to evaluate the performance of the AGATA geometries and the γ-ray tracking under the same conditions. Simulations have highlighted that tracking is possible for unshielded detectors in the experimental conditions at GSI, providing that the atomic background multiplicity can be kept below a certain threshold. The inclusion of the extreme levels of atomic background in the simulations completely saturates the γ-rays of interest, suggesting that the use of shielding needs to be further investigated. Assuming that shielding or analysis techniques are to be used experimentally, the atomic back- ground was removed from the simulations leaving only the high energy background component, and the consecutive performance of the AGATA geometries were investigated and compared with RISING. Under such conditions, the AGATA geometries gave up to a factor of ∼2 improvement in terms of the peak-to-total ratio compared to the RISING array.

Todos os corantes orgânicos estudados (anilinas) sofrem degradação pela luz.<br>The State of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, is one of the main world producers of geodes of agates: (a stone having a cavity lined with crystals). The purpose of this paper is to analyze the measurements of agates colored by means of a colorimeter. The aging factor of colored agates with organic and inorganic dyes was evaluated. The colored agates with following organic colorings were analyzed: Brilliant green, rhodamine B (pink), crystal violet (purple), and blood red. The coloring of the following standard procedures of dyeing were also evaluated: Ferrocyanid of potassium/sulfate of iron (blue), nitrate of iron/calcinations (red), chromic acid/carbonate of ammonium (green), and sugar/sulfuric acid (black). The experimental procedures consisted of exposing agate plates in three places with distinct luminosity (dark, in door/domestic, and outdoors). The color variation was analyzed with a Minolta 2600d spectrophotometer, using the L* a* b* colorimetrical system as related to the colorimetric differential. The results have demonstrated that the colorimetric differential revealed itself as an efficient tool to evaluate the loss of artificially colored agates. The standards procedures for dyeing in green and red produce stable colors. The standard procedures, for dyeing in blue and black, offer variations, as they can be considered photosensitive. All the studied organic colorings (anilines) are degraded by the light.

For the development of the agate treatment, the system was replicated, standardized and optimized in the LAPROM Laboratory of the UFRGS and Centro Tecnológico de Pedras, Gemas e Joias do Rio Grande do Sul. The sampling was classified in four standards and spectrophotometer analyzed in three different phases. In conclusion, is compared the optimized and industrialized dyeing results, with the spectral distribution curves measured before and after the thermochemical treatment of the agate. With the optimized system, it was possible to reduce operating costs, energy time involved in the system, as well as keep and elevate color quality and being possible to establish relationship with quantitative and qualitative aspects of the reagents used.

Colosimo, Samantha. "The characterisation of AGATA high purity germanium detectors for pulse shape analysis." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2013. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/11077/.

Full text
Abstract:
Gamma-ray spectroscopy is an essential tool in the study of nuclear phenomenon. The study of exotic nuclei and nuclear states have been used to expand the nuclear chart as well as understand the origin of the universe. Large volume high purity germanium arrays, very high beam intensities and more recently exotic beams have lead to new understanding of nuclear physics. The Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) aims to utilise high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors in order to achieve a dramatic increase in efficiency over current spectrometers. The work detailed in this thesis shows a highly detailed characterisation of two AGATA asymmetric capsules of the same shape in order to test and compare performances. Detector A004 was acceptance tested and scanned at the University of Liverpool in February 2010. Detector A006 was scanned between April and September 2010. Resolution, efficiency and charge collection parameters have been studied, comparing these two detector. The results of the comparison show an excellent agreement between the performance of the two detectors. The depletion rate of the detectors has also been compared quantitatively indicating the dependence of depletion on impurity concentration of the capsules. An experimental pulse shape database was generated for detector A006. The sensitivity of the detector response was quantified indicating the regions of the detector of high variation in pulse shape response. The AGATA detector library, which used to simulate the detector response for pulse shape analysis, is compared with this database. The position resolution achieved between the two data sets has been calculated. The combination of the detailed comparison and characterisation of the detector with the study of the simulate database will provide the AGATA collaboration with useful information to improve detector simulations in the further for pulse shape analysis.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the methods and results different position analysis techniques provide for Compton image reconstruction. The AGATA A006 detector a highly segmented large volume detector has been utilised for the analysis of data presented in this thesis. This data contained within the thesis was part of the GammaKEV project, which aimed to develop a portable gamma-ray spectrometer for use on a nuclear submarine, with this work focusing on how the improvement of position determination can improve the reconstructed image FWHM. The AGATA A006 detector is a 80x80x90 mm3 HPGe, 36 segment and one core, coaxial detector. The average energy resolution over all the segments and core was found to be 2.7 ke V. This work shows the improvement that parametric pulse shape analysis can make in large detector segments to Compton image reconstruction. Two 1332 keV 60CO sources have been placed in front of the AGATA A006 detector at 100 mm and have been imaged using a simple back projection Compton image reconstruction code developed at the University of Liverpool. A method has been developed to apply parametric PSA to improve the precision of locating the position of interaction within the segments. A GEANT4 simulation has been adapted to replicate the experimental setup utilising a Gaussian smearing function applied to the simulated x, y and z position and energy data to assess the improvement that parametric PSA provides to the discrimination of position within the detector segments. The simulated energy and position smeared data reconstructed image resolution has been compared to the experimental data reconstructed image resolution. It has been found that the parametric PSA method developed in this thesis, will give a position resolution of 3 ± 0.5 mm within the segments of the crystal when compared to a 15 ± 0.5 mm position resolution for data reconstructed without utilising parametric PSA.

Augustin, Adolpho Herbert. "Geologia do depósito de Ágata e Ametista da Mina Novo são João, Santana do Livramento, RS." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/12017.

Full text
Abstract:
A integração dos dados obtidos mostra que o contexto geológico da área estudada é propício para alojar vários depósitos de geodos, os quais merecem ser pesquisado em trabalhos futuros, a fim de obter uma avaliação do potencial econômico para gemas da fronteira sudoeste do RS.<br>The Novo São João Mine, located within the boundaries of the city of Santana do Livramento, near the border of Brazil and Uruguay, in the Paraná Basalt Continental Flood Province context, produces agate and amethyst geodes. However, in this mine also some occur varieties of cornaline, colourless and milky quartz. This study presents the data obtained during the geologic mapping of the Novo São João Mine as well as the mineral inclusions identified in the amethyst crystals. The geodes occur in shallow levels of the basaltic rocks (Serra Geral Formation) with magmatic flow structures and fractures. The host-rock is constituted by plagioclase and clinopyroxene, which are associated with variable proportions of ilmenite, apatite, quartz and clayminerals. The rocks of Serra Geral Formation are predominant in the mine geologic setting, although the Botucatu Formation also outcrops in this region. The abrupt contact combined with some relicts structures which are preserved in these stratigraphic units (e.g., flow striation, basalt molds and rocks resembling to peperites) suggest that the extrusion of basaltic lavas the desertic environment ative. The occurrence mode, the size and the shape of geodes are conditioned by open spaces related to the basaltic lavas flow. These dilatation spaces allowed the percolation of the mineralizing fluids and the precipitation of silica minerals, which resulted in the geodes formation with variable filling. The amethyst crystals contain inclusions of goethite, halite, sylvite, fluorite and pyrite. This is the first register of fluorite inclusions in amethyst of the southernmost Brazil. The occurrence of chlorides and fluorides in the studied amethyst suggest that mineralizing solutions are related to geothermal fluids similar to those of the subterranean waters of aquifers in the Paraná Basalt Continental Flood Province context. The occurrence mode and mineral assemblage of the geodes combined dilatation structures of the host-rocks suggest that the geodes formation is related to epigenetic process of the infiltration of hot subterranean water (geothermal fluids). The data obtained in this study suggest the following guides to prospect target-areas to host geodes: (i) rocks with dilatation structures such as magmatic foliation, fractures and pods and (ii) springs of thermal waters in the Paraná Basalt Continental Flood Province context. The data integration suggest that the geologic setting of the studied area is adequate to host several geodes deposits around which future workers can build to evaluation the real economic potential of gems in this region.

Heemann, Roberto.

Full text
Abstract:
Essas unidades vulcânicas constituem a denominada Estrutura Jacuí.
