This dissertation studies the Good inside Plato’s Symposium. We chose this theme because of the concerns that came out of Plato’s dialogues when, in them, it was not possible, at least not clearly, to determine the meaning of Good. On the contrary, its meaning was not fully explored (as it is seen in the “Book VI” of the Republic, in which the character of Socrates diverts from the subject itself and moves on to discussing the son of the Good, the Sun). Because of this concern this research found a new angle to explore what that meaning could be inside Plato’s Symposium. Therefore, we study the meaning of Good as we dwell on Agathon’s paradigmatic character, as it receives the name agathon, the Good. Plato gives us clues in order to start an investigation on the character himself, such as: its name, its household, the order of the dialogues, the parts of his speech etc. The ways for our search about the meaning of the Good originate from a research on the concept of love (ti metaxy, daimon) and beauty (kalos), as all of them are intertwined, clarifying what love and beauty are, and they are connected explicitly inside the dialogue in Plato’s Symposium (203c), and this suggests a way for us to enlighten the meaning of the Good. This research has a phenomenological approach, as it favors most of Heidegger’s ideas. We opted by Heidegger because this contemporary philosopher is the most crucial one for our clarification of the Good, as in many studies concerning the Greek terms, mainly when talking about agathon, he presented the interpretative way that we needed in order to achieve a proper understanding on the meaning of Good through Agathon’s character. By studying the Love inside Plato’s Symposium this investigation concludes that he is an intermediate (203a). As it is possible to notice in our research the term ti metaxy brings with it the meaning of something “that is inbetween”, intermediating a passage. Another term by which Love is called is Daimon: “the one that makes everything bright and clear”. Love as the one that brings clarity. Beauty is connected to it because, based on our studies, it is “what is brought upon” by Love (203c). We understand that this is how Love originated Beauty as what appears. And, as for the Good, we see as justified in this dissertation, based on a Heidegger’s phenomenological study (he returns to the term agathon in its Greek meaning), that this concept is unveiled as “pure possibility, offering, support for something to happen”. When taking this path directly to Agathon’s character we notice, at last, that it occupies this position inside the Symposium by undertaking exactly the role of the Good, as it was the one that offered the possibility and the support so that the Love logos and the Beauty manifestation could take place in its household. Good as possibility, as the reader himself will be able to notice after going through all of our research in this dissertation, was exposed in that character. However, without a proper investigation approach, as the phenomenology, we would not be able to achieve these conclusions, and we would be looking at the character as a simple scenic game inside Plato’s Symposium.

Abstract:

Bernthal, James Carl. "A queer approach to Agatha Christie, 1920-1952." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18196.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides the first extensive queer reading of a 'Golden Age' British detective fiction writer. The aim of this thesis is to assess queer potential in texts published by Agatha Christie between 1920 and 1952. Human identity can be read as self-consciously constructed in Christie's novels, which were written in a context of two world wars, advances in technology and communication, and what Michel Foucault called the 'medicalization' of Western culture. The self-conscious stereotyping in Christie's prose undermines her texts' conservative appeal to the status quo. Chapter One justifies this project's critique of identity essentialism in the texts by considering the manufacturing of 'Agatha Christie' as a widely-read celebrity author. Reading Christie's authorial identity as something established and refined through a market-driven response to readers' expectations and a conscious engagement with earlier forms of detective fiction provides space for reading identity itself as a stylized, performative, and sometimes parodic theme within the texts. In subsequent chapters, employing theoretical insights from Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Judith Butler, and Lee Edelman, I explore Christie's participation in contemporary debates surrounding masculinity, femininity, and the importance of the family in shaping individual identity. Finally, I consider Christie's reputation in the twenty-first century by exploring nostalgic television adaptations of her work. Comparing the presentation of 'queer' characters in the literary texts to the adaptations' use of explicit homosexual themes and characters, I conclude that there is a stronger potential for 'queering' identity in the former. As the first full queer reading of a 'Golden Age' detective novelist, this thesis expands queer notions of archive and canonicity: few scholars to date have considered mainstream literary texts without overt LGBTQ+ themes or characters from a queer perspective. Given Christie's global reach and appeal, locating queerness in her texts means understanding queerness as fundamental to everyday culture. This means engaging with a subversive potential in twentieth century middlebrow conservatism.

Yiannitsaros, Christopher. "Deadly domesticity : Agatha Christie's 'middlebrow' Gothic, 1930-1970." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2016. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/89292/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of the Gothic - genre of literary production deeply implicated with a set of patently middle class anxieties concerning the home - in the ‘middlebrow’ detective fiction of Agatha Christie, particularly within her novels authored in the forty year period between 1930 and 1970. It is argued that there are five different ‘types’ of Gothic at work in Christie’s fiction: the haunted house narrative; the Gothic village; Gay Gothic; Post-WWII Gothic; and Brontë Gothic. This thesis moreover suggests that Christie’s employment and development of these Gothic sub-genres is often achieved via nineteenth-century interlocutors, with Christie’s fiction drawing heavily upon, and in some cases ‘re-imagining’, some of the cornerstones of Victorian Gothic literature. In doing so, this thesis sets out to problematize Alison Light’s famous characterisation of Christie as a ‘modernist […] iconoclast’ whose fiction nonchalantly shatters ‘Victorian images of home, sweet home’. Instead, it is argued that Christie’s use of the Gothic speaks of a relationship with nineteenth-century literary culture which far more complicated: a contradictory interplay of simultaneous desire and distance characteristic of the ‘middlebrow’ fiction produced by women writers of this time. This thesis reads Christie’s use of the Gothic historically, seeking to both firmly situate her work within its contemporary historical contexts - particularly in relation to debates regarding the family, domestic space, and the birth of what Nicola Humble has termed the birth of ‘the new cult of the domestic’ after the First World War - and to elucidate the nineteenth-century contexts which she additionally draws upon. Ultimately, in reading instances of domestic Gothicism as they occur across her oeuvre, this thesis makes a case for the valuable historically-specific cultural critiques made by one who, at least in the popular imagination, is positioned as such an avowedly ‘conservative’ writer.

Full text
Abstract:
Dendrochronological sampling of sixteen stands of kauri (Agathis australis) covering almost the whole range of the species in northern New Zealand is described. Eight new chronologies were obtained and compared to previous results from the same species. It is concluded that north-facing slopes are most suitable for tree-ring studies in this species. The chronologies cover a maximum period from A.D. 1580 to 1981 and show from 20 to 35 percent common chronology variance over the sample period 1790 to 1976. All the chronologies are significantly correlated with all others, and the degree of correlation appears unrelated to the spatial separation between the sites. Some longer-term (15 to 30 year) trends are also shared by most chronologies; narrow rings and high between-tree and between-site correlations were a feature of the first two decades of the Twentieth Century. Similar tree ring patterns, and similar site characteristics suggest that the chronology network described here is suitable for palaeoclimatic reconstruction back to at least 1750.

Steward, Gregory Alan. "Growth and yield of New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis (D. Don) Lindl.)." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Forestry, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6262.

Full text
Abstract:
The growth and productivity of kauri (Agathis australis (D. Don) Lindl.) in even-aged single-species planted stands and mixed-aged second-growth natural stands has been studied. Stand-level models of height, basal area and whole-tree volume were developed. Kauri growth and productivity in planted stands up to 83 years old were compared to that of natural stands that were up to 196 years of age. Within natural stands, the effect of thinning treatments on growth and productivity was also assessed. Models of growth and productivity were initially developed for each of the three different kauri stand types independently (planted, second-growth unthinned and thinned). Combined data sets allowed for the development of single models that were able to fit all stands. A Schumacher equation with local slope parameter and asymptote bounded at 45 m gave the best fit for height growth, while a von Bertalanffy-Richards equation in difference form with local slope parameter gave the best fit for basal area growth. Kauri in all stand types were found to be slow to establish with little height growth in planted stands for the first five years after planting, and for the first 25 years in natural stands. Similar trends were observed for basal area and whole-tree volume development. Models developed in this study are relevant only to kauri in the “ricker” or monopodial form irrespective of age, and for stands from 320-2000 stems/ha. Kauri growth and productivity in planted stands was substantively better than that in second-growth stands. Planted kauri had height increment of 0.4 m/yr for periods of up to 30 years. At age 50, planted kauri was predicted to be 20 m in height, over twice the height of kauri in natural stands, and to be 28.1 m by 100 years. Basal area at age 50 averaged 64.9 m2/ha for all planted stands, and was predicted to be 98.2 m2/ha at age 100. Whole-tree volume was predicted to increase by 11.7 m3/ha/annum for all stands, but was as high as 20.6 m3/ha/yr in one 70 year old stand. The maximum productivity of kauri was observed in one high-performing young kauri planted stand where whole-tree volume increment in excess of 30 m3/ha/yr were predicted for a period from age 15-30. Carbon sequestration was calculated from the volume model and predicted to be 316 t C/ha and 1168 t CO2/ha at age 100. Mortality of kauri in planted stands was as high as 3.9%/yr for individual stands, over their entire rotation to date. For all stands, mortality averaged 0.56%/yr. The highest mortality occurred in the years before the first assessment and averaged 0.64%/yr for all stands. From the first to the last assessment mortality averaged 0.30%/yr. Where mortality in individual stands was above the average rate the dominant cause was drought. The growth and productivity of kauri in second-growth stands was only marginally improved by thinning to reduce competition. The volume removed in thinning operations had not been replaced in the (up to) 50 years since thinning treatments were applied. At age 150, the predicted height of kauri in unthinned control and thinned stands were identical at 25.9 m. Basal area at age 150 was 64.5 m2/ha in unthinned stands and 52.6 m2/ha in thinned stands. Whole-tree volume was predicted to be 681 m3/ha in unthinned and 549 m3/ha in thinned stands. Volume increment peaked at 5.2 m3/ha/yr in unthinned stands and 4.7 m3/ha/yr in thinned stands. This study has shown that the worst growth and productivity of kauri in planted stands was better than that of the best natural stands. The difference in performance between plantation and second-growth kauri was most likely a result of a combination of lower site quality characteristics (soil type and fertility), stand structure and within-stand competition of natural stands. The data for planted kauri came from 31 permanent sample plots located in 25 planted stands. These stands ranged in age from 14-83 years at the last assessment, and ranged in stand density from 218-1800 stems/ha. The overall number of planted stands and plots from which data was available to develop models was small in comparison to many exotic forest species datasets. The majority of the planted stands were not silviculturally treated after planting, and considerable variation in establishment methods was recorded. The results of productivity from the models developed for planted kauri should therefore be considered to be conservative. The results of this study indicate an opportunity to grow kauri in plantations on good quality sites for the production of high quality sapwood timber over rotations of 60 years or less. They also indicate that second-growth stands will produce usable volumes of timber, but only over extended periods of time. To ensure that kauri in planted stands can meet the potential observed during the development of these models, a series of well-managed stands on a range of sites is urgently required where the effects of timely silviculture, including initial stand density, can be assessed, quantified and reported on. Further research on selection and breeding for the species would improve the early establishment and growth of planted kauri resulting in a reduced rotation length. Research on long-term management strategies that include continuous cover forestry may make the species an attractive proposition for carbon forestry and/or for the production of high quality, naturally durable heartwood. The dataset compiled for this study was the best data available. While it cannot as yet be used to develop prescriptions for the establishment and maintenance of planted kauri stands, it does provide clues and directions that should be pursued in further research, however.

Abstract:
This essay is a gender analysis of some of the characters created by Agatha Christie. The aim is to investigate the occurrence of gender stereotypes and if traditional gender norms are challenged by men and/or women characters in Evil Under the Sun and The Body in the Library. Initially, there is an introduction to gender theories which includes the theorists Thomas Laqueur and Simone de Beauvoir among others. Laqueur presents the evolution of gender theories, specifically the two-sex model in which it was believed that sex is pervasive and thus the body rules the mind. Theories presented by him are vastly different from those of de Beauvoir who argues that the mind and body are separate. Other theorists which specifically deal with crime fiction and gender include Susan Rowland, who writes about the reformation of the detective and how the crime genre is gendered, and Gill Plain, who has been able to categorised Christie’s characters into three distinctive groups in which gender roles are clearly distinguishable. The conclusion reached is that male and female characters are portrayed both as adhering to gender roles, contemporary to the time at which the books were written, and as breaking them. However the outcomes and reactions differ depending on the character in question. Marple and Poirot appear to be well aware of the stereotypical way they are viewed and use it to appear less intimidating in order to hide their true nature as two sharp intellects.

Abstract:
Is there, as well as a work on dream, a work on myth in detective stories? Reading Agatha Christie and Pierre Véry induces this question: the myth of children can be seen, indeed, as a key to review their novels, enabling us to organize their works of fiction according to a few dynamisms and links of meaning. Based not only on material but also on form, the depiction of childhood is torned between aesthetic method and aesthetic process in Very’s and Christies’s books. Our work aims at questioning the meaning, the function and the consequences of this variation thanks to the use of mythical items

Abstract:

Title:

Standardizing or adapting the marketing mix across culture

Authors:

Ingrid Bernier and Elise Meyer

Supervisor:

Jean-Charles Languilaire

Level:

Bachelor Thesis in Business Administration, Marketing

Key words:

Culture, international marketing, marketing strategies, standardization and adaptation

Purpose:

Compare two strategies, standardization and adaptation, to show how companies manage cultural differences.

Method:

Our research method is a descriptive one. Then, we collect data from secondary sources such as the books, articles, journals and studies. Then, we judge essential to gather primary data to answer our purpose. In this way, we do one qualitative personal interview with the international marketing director of Agatha and one email interview with its communication director. Finally, the entire information is treated and selected according to the reliability and validity of data.

Theoretical framework:

Our theoretical framework is based on theory concerning in a first part, cultural differences with two cultural frameworks: Hofstede and Hall and in the second part, the comparison of two marketing strategies: adaptation versus standardization.

Conclusions:

This thesis shows that cultural differences on international market affect the adaptation of the product, price and promotion. The distribution channels have, on the other hand, only been affected by social conditions. The results show that it has been a challenge for Agatha to find a balance between the degree of standardization and adaptation of the different elements of the marketing mix—a challenge that they have succeeded to deal with. Furthermore, the study shows the importance of adapted the marketing mix to the local situation since it is the key to manage to design offers that will lead to success and increased market shares. The overall conclusion of this study is that Agatha needs to think globally but act locally and take cultural differences into considerations.

Coetzee, Liesel. "Detecting dominant discourses in selected detective fiction by Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24763.

Abstract:
Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie were the most successful British women writers of their time. Christie and Blyton were contemporaries, living and writing in the United Kingdom during the first half of the twentieth century. This study takes into consideration these similarities in its examination of the depiction of dominant discourses in relation to emergent, alternative and oppositional discourses in their writing. This thesis suggests that while Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie offer alternatives to the dominant patriarchal discourses of the British Empire in the first half of the twentieth century, they show allegiance, too, to the dominant discourses of their time. Specific consideration is given to the portrayal of discourses concerned with gender, feminism, classism, British colonialism, racism, and xenophobia in their writing. The work of Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie was extremely popular in their time and still is today. Their important contribution to popular literature in England in the early twentieth century justifies a study of a selection of their work in relation to detective fiction and children’s literature as well as to studies of social history that include the investigation of how dominant discourse is both endorsed and challenged.

Abstract:
The potential of kauri (Agathis australis) for paleoclimate research is well established. Multiple treering chronologies have been derived from living and sub-fossil material and growth-climate relationships have been identified. Work has progressed to the stage where raw ring-width data and chronologies covering the last half of the second millennium can confidently be placed in the public domain, to facilitate multiproxy paleoclimate studies. This paper outlines progress in deriving kauri tree-ring chronologies, summarises data availability and quality, and explores the scope for developing composite chronologies. Statistical quality control of the available data was undertaken, following application of an "optimum" standardisation technique. Variations in sample depth with time and between sites result in a complex evolving pattern of chronology quality across sites. Analysis of inter-site statistical relationships identified a pervasive regionalscale signal in kauri with some minor secondary patterns. In light of the strong common signal, a kauri master chronology was built by pooling tree-ring series. Analysis of the quality of this chronology indicates that high-quality master chronologies can be derived for A.D. 1597-1996 from as few as 25 trees from seven sites.

Abstract:
The work of Marguerite Duras comprises seventeen "texts-films" distributed throughout its filmic period from 1969 to 1985. These texts guides of films constitute a particular form of filmic writing which utilizes three different modes of expression. Located at the three decade old border, the text-films being studied here, Detruire ditelle, (1969), Nathalie Granger (1972), Agatha (1981) differently ask the same question of the literary, theatrical and filmic genre all while escaping from it. The "texte-film" which is primarily plural and plurifunctional is showed here in three states, at three moments of its continuous creation. In a rejection of the traditional structures of transposition of writing to film, they challenge authorities as varied as the dialogical form, the dramatic text, the scenario. Stages of a long renouncement of writing or revivals of a creativity unceasingly searching for new ways to express itself, the "texts-films" studied here are holding essential keys to understanding the very whole work of Marguerite Duras.

Fowler, A. M. "Variance Stabilization Revisited: A Case For Analysis Based On Data Pooling." Tree-Ring Society, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/622607.

Full text
Abstract:
The traditional approach to standardizing tree-ring time series is to divide raw ring widths by a fitted curve. Although the derived ratios are conceptually elegant and have a more homogenous variance through time than simple differences, residual heteroscedasticity associated with variance dependence on local mean ring width may remain. Incorrect inferences about climate forcing may result if this heteroscedasticity is not corrected for, or at least recognized (with appropriate caveats). A new variance stabilization method is proposed that specifically targets this source of heteroscedasticity. It is based on stabilizing the magnitude of differences from standardization curves to a common reference local mean ring width and uses data pooled from multiple radii. Application of the method to a multi-site kauri (Agathis australis (D. Don) Lindley) data set shows that (a) the heteroscedasticity issue addressed may be generic rather than radius-specific, at least for some species, (b) variance stabilization using pooled data works well for standardization curves of variable flexibility, (c) in the case of kauri, simple ratios do not appear to be significantly affected by this cause of heteroscedasticity, and (d) centennial-scale variance trends are highly sensitive to the analytical methods used to build tree-ring chronologies.

It’s ordinary to listen today, when debating issues of reading and text production in the classroom of Elementary School, that student should contact with a wide range of texts, for that you can expand knowledge of the language, using in it in order to achieve the desired goals. In this way, It’s essential that explore the most diverse text genres, regardless of that textual typology it predominates. However, at least in my practice, I see a tendency to favour, especially with the work of writing when we focus opinion text, argumentative dialogue, critical review, among others who have predominantly argumentative text-type. Another fact that always caught my attention, while elementary school teacher, is that the narratives, that involve the investigative perspective, such as the police narratives, like them enough. In general, they experience these narratives in film, and, in your vast majority, in TV series like Dexter and 24 Horas. In this way, we have formulated the following investigative hypothesis: considering that one of the main features of narratives cops is the logical-rational support, which implies the ordering of thought sequenced (in variations as the author), in that way a systematic work of reading and writing in this narrative genre, would change the expansion of repertoire of students, in other words, would allow them to take ownership of aspects of that reading and writing? Starting from the reading practice in suspense1 , the research of this project focused in trying to devise a strategy of writing that allowed not only to students try the writing process with less rejection as also, extend your repertoire with regard to genre studied especially because the point of logical reasoning pervades several other genres. We work with a class of ninth grade of Elementary School of public school in the municipality of Volta Redonda in the state of Rio de Janeiro, that allow students to extend your repertoire with regard to police narrative reading. We elect as literary author for research the writer Agatha Christie, particularly with the tales in which the investigator is the classic detective Hercule Poirot. We support, theoretically, in the theories of Literacy (SOARES), particularly the Literary Literacy (COSSON), in the theory of Aesthetic Effect (ISER), shared reading (COLOMER), mediation (PETIT), and on the conceptions of narratives of Todorov. We have how action research methodology seen not only the character of intervention research as well as the effective participation of the teacher in the classroom.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This thesis aims to explain the concept of detective fiction as a recreational exercise of logical deduction and the transposition of its main elements to the cinema, focusing on the delineation of the most recurring strategies of detection and deception in Agatha Christie s detective fiction. First, we address Christie s writing in the so-called Golden Age of detective fiction and define its public reception; afterwards, we deal with the genre in its filmic version, emphasizing its features in comparison with other forms of crime fiction. After summarizing the problems in relation to film adaptation, three different case studies are presented, offering comparative analyses of three Christie novels and their respective cinematographic adaptations; these analyses stress either the way the basic elements of the formula were transposed to the screen, or the relevance of the additions to the original plots, as they have been interpolated by three different film directors in three different decades of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
This thesis presents research that improves our understanding of the relationship between climate and tree-ring stable isotopes in New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis (D. Don) Lindl.) and cedar (Libocedrus bidwillii Hook. F). As a whole, this research creates a framework from which future investigations of stable isotope dendroclimatology can pursued at high temporal resolution across longer term temporal intervals. Such a framework is required to realize the full potential of New Zealand tree-ring records as archives of palaeoclimatic information. In the Southern Hemisphere, mid-to-high latitude terrestrial climate proxy records are sparse; the long-lived endemic conifers of New Zealand present a rare opportunity to gain valuable insight into Late-Quaternary and Holocene climatic change. A major barrier to long stable isotope dendroclimatic proxy records has been the time-and-resource intensive nature of associated sample preparation and analytical processes. Through experimental assessment of the SBrendel α-cellulose extraction method, this research demonstrates that this simple processing method can, with some caveats, be successfully applied to resinous conifers, facilitating rapid chemical preparation of samples. Further efficiency gains are documented in through use of dual element low temperature pyrolysis of cellulose, providing carbon and oxygen stable isotope determinations on a single sample, rather than the traditionally separate analyses. These preliminary investigations into methodological efficiency enabled the ~3000 stable isotope determinations on kauri and cedar, on which the following investigations into isotopic variability, chronology quality and climate-isotope relationships are based. Both kauri and cedar exhibit substantial intra and inter-tree isotopic variability, resulting in greater than normal sample numbers being required to isolate the common variance in composite time-series. Despite sampling 7 trees (18 cores) at one site and 8 trees (21 cores) at another, only oxygen isotope time-series reach an Expressed Population Signal score of 0.85, a common benchmark of chronology quality. Further investigations using high-resolution sequential sampling of single rings show that this variability extends to a sub-annual scale. Within single rings there are large ranges in δ13C and δ18O, generally corresponding with regular annual cycles of up to 4.6‰ for δ13C and 8.1‰ for δ18O. These data show high frequency (sub weekly) changes in δ18O, demonstrating sufficiently fine resolution for event-to-seasonal scale climate/weather reconstruction. However, that potential is complicated by the lack of strong climatic correlations with isotopic cycles. Due to their stronger common signal, δ18O time series are investigated for inter-annual stable isotope dendroclimatic reconstruction from kauri and cedar. Bootstrapped correlation and multiple regression models show strong relationships between kauri and cedar δ18O and relative humidity, accumulated rainfall and soil moisture deficit. The correlations are strongest for all variables during the period from Autumn prior to growth to the current growth summer. Tree-ring δ18O in kauri and cedar is identified as an effective recorder of regional hydroclimate leading up to and during the Austral growth season. While it is demonstrated that tree-ring δ18O holds significant promise for inter-annual palaeoclimate reconstruction, it is equally apparent from this research that stable isotope dendroclimatology in New Zealand faces significant challenges. Foremost is gaining an improved understanding of seasonal dendrochemical cycles and their relationship with tree-physiology. Increasing the spatial and temporal coverage of tree-ring isotope records is vital to realising New Zealand’s vast potential for stable isotope dendroclimatic reconstruction.

Fowler, Anthony, Andrew Lorrey, and Peter Crossley. "Seasonal Growth Characteristics of Kauri." Tree-Ring Society, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/262637.

Full text
Abstract:
Considerable research has occurred in recent years to build Agathis australis (D. Don) Lindley (kauri) tree-ring chronologies for paleoclimate applications and to identify statistical relationships between kauri tree rings and climate. This paper reports on a multi-year study of the seasonal growth of kauri, designed to assist in the interpretation of identified statistical relationships, and to determine if kauri’s seasonal growth characteristics are dependent on tree size. To achieve this, 43 kauri (0.09-2.00 m diameter) at Huapai Scientific Reserve were fitted with vernier bands to measure circumference change over 3-4 growing seasons. Absolute (mm) and relative (proportion of total ring) monthly growth rates were calculated for each tree and statistics characterizing the timing of growth were calculated (e.g. date corresponding to 50% of growth). Tree size-related differences were assessed by splitting the data into three subsets based on size, then comparing the monthly growth rates and growth timing statistics for the subsets. The growth timing statistics were also correlated with tree diameter. A key finding is the strong dominance of spring growth, with October and November alone accounting for 38-50% of the total ring width. This result is consistent across age cohorts, although the largest trees tended to peak in November, rather than October. This indicates that kauri tree rings are likely to have value in terms of reconstructing spring conditions; consistent with reported statistical relationships between kauri tree rings and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon. High inter-tree variance in growth rates characterized the results, but little of this variance was accounted for by tree size. Although relationships between tree size and growth characteristics were generally weak and inconsistent, they are considered sufficient to warrant a precautionary approach in the development of tree-ring chronologies for climate reconstruction purposes.

Malan, Agatha Madeleine. "Occupational stress, coping, burnout and work engagement of hospital pharmacists in South Africa / Agatha Madeleine Malan." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1226.

Full text
Abstract:
The environment in which hospital pharmacists currently function demands more of them than did any previous period. Employees in pharmacy companies have to cope with the demands that arise from fulfilling various roles, as well as with increased pressures such as managed health care and primary health care. Tracking and addressing their effectiveness in coping with new demands and stimulating their growth in areas that could possibly impact on the standard of pharmacy services are therefore of great importance. The first step in the enhancement of the work-related well-being of hospital pharmacists is the successful diagnosis of occupational stress, burnout and work engagement. However, in order to measure these constructs, it is important to use reliable and valid instruments, and at the same time take biographical differences into account. The objectives of this study were to validate the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) and the Pharmacist Stress Inventory (PSI) for hospital pharmacists in South Africa, to assess the effect of biographical factors on the levels of burnout, engagement and occupational stress, and to investigate the role of job stress and coping strategies in the work-related well-being (burnout and work engagement) of hospital pharmacists in South Africa. A cross-sectional survey design was used. The study population consisted of an accidental sample (N = 187) of South African hospital pharmacists in both public and private hospital facilities on a national basis. The MBI-HSS, UWES, PSI, the Coping Orientation for Problem Experienced (COPE) as well as a biographical questionnaire were administered. Descriptive statistics, Cronbach alpha coefficients, confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), t-tests and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse the data Confirmatory factor analysis by means of structural equation modelling of the MBI-HSS, confirmed a three-factor model of burnout, consisting of Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalisation and Personal Accomplishment. The scales showed acceptable reliabilities. The results indicated that 35% of the hospital pharmacists showed high levels of emotional exhaustion, while 25% showed high levels of depersonalisation. Biographical factors such as age, years in pharmacy practice, home language, average number of hours worked per week, as well as the level of job satisfaction were related to the burnout levels of hospital pharmacists. Exploratory factor analysis of the UWES resulted in two factors, namely Vigour/dedication and Absorption. These factors showed acceptable Cronbach alpha coefficients. In the same sample (but in a different analysis where the two factors were used separately), it was indicated that compared to a South African norm, 38,5% and 48,9% of the hospital pharmacists showed low levels of vigour and dedication respectively. Position, home language, and the educational level were related to work engagement of hospital pharmacists. The PSI was developed as a measuring instrument for the purposes of this study. Three internally consistent factors, namely Job Demands, Pharmacy-Specific Stressors and Lack of Resources were extracted. The level of severity of the various stressors was calculated and the unavailability of medicine proved to be the most severe stressor. Other severe stressors included frequent interruptions, co-workers not doing their jobs, workload and insufficient salaries. Finally it was investigated whether job stress and coping strategies could predict the work related well-being of hospital pharmacists in South Africa. The results showed that job stress (as a result of job demands and lack of job resources), as well as three coping strategies (approach coping, avoidance coping and turning to religion) predicted burnout and work engagement of South African hospital pharmacists. Recommendations for future research were made.

Abstract:
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Coronary artery calcification (CAC) indicates presence of CAD. Absence of CAC is associated with very low risk of having CAD but not equal to zero. In this study, we aim at developing a clinical prediction tool to predict presence of obstructive CAD among patients with zero calcium score. We developed two models. A full prespecified model with 7 variables based on input from clinical experts, and a reduced model with 4 variables based on univariate screening. Both models showed an acceptable performance (c-statistics of 0.68 for both). Both models performed well when validated, externally for the full model and internally for the reduced one. We derived a clinical risk score of 20 points from the full model. We found that a score threshold of ≥ 14 is associated with presence of obstructive CAD with positive likelihood ratio of 5.5.

Abstract:
Replication is a key principle in tree-ring research. Dendrochronologists strive to maximise sample size to enhance the "signal" in tree-ring chronologies, often relying on crossdating to provide an effective quality control filter. However, is crossdating alone a sufficient quality test for incorporating a series into a site chronology? We address this question using an objective and automated "chronology stripping" method designed to maximise the chronology's "Expressed Population Signal" (EPS), by iteratively removing series which lower chronology EPS. A 15-site data set of Agathis australis (D. Don) Lindley is used to demonstrate the method. Results suggest that modest benefits may be gained by chronology stripping, but the quality control implicit in crossdating is indeed effective, at least for Agathis australis.

Devereux, Danielle Marie. "Through the Magnifying Glass: Exploring British Society in the Golden Age Detective Fiction of Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Humanities, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8404.

Abstract:
This thesis uses the popular genre of detective fiction to explore the context of the heyday of the crime genre: the Golden Age. This sub-genre, best known for producing Agatha Christie, spanned the complicated history of Britain involving the Great Depression, two World Wars and huge changes to class structure. It is for these reasons that the Golden Age is such a pivotal period for changing notions of British identity. Through the very British Christie and the less well known New Zealander, Ngaio Marsh, expressions of national identity are explored as well as how the colonial fits in. Focusing heavily on the authors and their own personal experiences and views, this thesis is divided into four chapters to further break down how the Golden Age period affected its citizens and why this detective fiction held such a wide appeal. Chapter one explores gender roles and how Golden Age authors both conformed to them through their choice in detectives, yet also how they naturally resisted some through their own public image. Chapter two then examines the issue of class and how Golden Age detective fiction portrayed the changes. Contrary to popular criticism, Christie and Marsh were surprisingly progressive and forward thinking on this subject. Chapter three considers how both authors employed setting to emphasise these changes. Both Christie and Marsh used foreign settings to highlight British society and its flaws, and Marsh used her New Zealand settings to consider the relationship between Britain and her home. The final chapter will consider why Golden Age detective fiction was so popular: what was the appeal? For a period of violence and uncertainty, why were people drawn to crime fiction involving sometimes gruesome death? The appeal lay, and still does, in the puzzle: the game that diverted readers from their own problems. Golden Age fiction may have been highly formulaic and predictable, but it was also highly artificial and self-referential. This was a clever and diverting fiction that has been constantly underestimated by critics and deserves further study.
