Full textTo date, early life demographic traits have been poorly studied compare to adult traits in the vast majority of animal species. Young individuals are usually more difficult to study due to their small size, their mobile behavior and the high mortality rate that characterizes their life stage. However, the full understanding of the demographic processes requires the integration of all life stages. This lack of knowledge toward early-life stages is particularly detrimental for long lived species. Indeed for these species, the immature component represents a substantial part of the total reproductive value, having a high influence on the whole population dynamics. Hence, such limitations affect the accuracy of population projections in the context of global change and more generally our understanding of life history trait evolution. In order to fill in this gap, this PhD project focuses on early life demographic traits in a seabird species : the wandering albatross Diomedea exulans. In this very long-lived species, the immature period lasts around 10 years. Based on long-term individual monitoring and capture-recapture analyses, we estimated early-life survival and the access to reproduction according to age and sex. We also investigates the respective effects of extrinsic (e.g. climate, fisheries) and intrinsic factors (e.g. density dependence, parental effects) on these parameters. Many relationships between early-life vital rates and environmental variables have been described. From a theoretical perspective, we tested several predictions such as the canalization of life-history traits and the existence of different life-history strategies within a population. In this work, special attention was paid to demographic variations at the individual scale. Our study showed that vital rates of individuals of the same age and sex could be very different. We have linked early-life demographic traits with subsequent adult performances and identified some causes of these individual variations

Full textI used a 30-year study of long-lived seabirds (black-legged Kittiwakes) that breed in Brittany to study the evolution of trade-offs between early-life breeding decisions, future reproduction, and survival. I first found that recruitment age and habitat selection were intimately linked. Recruitment age further influenced breeding success and survival trajectories. Furthermore, sources of observed (reproductive covariates, experience) and unobserved heterogeneity (frailty) explained substantial amounts of variability in breeding success and survival. Overall, intermediate age recruits (age 5) seemed to maintain high breeding success over life and minimized senescence in survival compared to other recruits. Even though individual fitness showed that earlier recruitment was the most beneficial recruitment strategy, the costs associated to delayed recruitment seemed minimal

Full textStudying agricultural practices and landscapes, this work aims to show the main transformations Roussillon encountered from the XIIth to the XIVth century, because its agriculture, breeding, fishing and hunting practices informs us on the whole societey. Thanks to the use of both Field Archaeology and written documents, the former obscure branches of the rural life, can now be better understood. All steps of production have been studied, from the field preparation, to the products consumption or marketing. It shows agrowth, which reveals a stronger influence of people on their land. This is to link with the deep social transformations. Farmers, lords and the prince, but also merchants, are responsible for a larger dynamism, which connects more strongly Roussillon's countryside to the Mediterranean trade. These factors, undoubtly, have consequences on the reintegration of the short-lived Kingdom of Majorque, in the Crown of Aragon

Full textWhy and how we use to fight in the late Middle Ages and during the sixteenth century? With what weapons? Following what rules or principles? The objective of this work is to answer these questions by questioning the theoretical and practical uses of weapons. The ones present in European society in the late Middle Ages and during the Renaissance. Three approaches will be explored :– First, the situation on the ground through the study of legal sources, particularly the remission letters in which the presence and use of a weapon can lead to injury or death of an individual.– Secondly, the theory of weapons through the study of Fechtbücher, Germanic fightbooks written by masters at arms of the fifteenth and sixteenth century. They explain the handling of various weapons such as swords, polearms or daggers. Also the foundations of the art of wrestling and fencing on foot and on horseback.– Finally, the contemporary practice. That is to say, the gesture experimentation and the attempted to return old techniques and tactics through teaching methods in a regulatory framework. The goal is to better understand the playful martial gestures of the past.Besides the contribution of sociology, this corpus is completed by literary or normative documents, showing weapons in non-militarized environments such as corporate fencers or martial and sporting events

Full textOur study considers the relationships between christians and jews in the Crown of Aragon during the Thirteenth and first half of the forteenth century. The legal definition of these relations is given by the Church and the contacts are disapproved by both Christiandom and authorities of the judaïsm. Despite the rules, men meet one another, and the royal power considers the jewish minority as an ally for economical and political reasons. The general context is the one of the Reconquista, which implies the need of trustful men. The jews play this role in the conquered territories and elsewhere. But during this period, the thinking of the Chruch is more and more exclusive and the mendicant orders preach to the jews for them to convert. The society itself is getting closed. The sources for this study are both religious (manuscripts) and from the royal power (chancellery registers)

Full textThis is a study of cuerda seca ceramics produced in al-Andalus (Spain and Portugal under Islamic rule) between the second half of the 10th century and the first half of the 13th century AD. It presents a typology of shapes and patterns of those ceramics for each period studied (Umayyad Caliphate, Taifas, Almoravid, Almohad Caliphate). The workshops of each period are described as well as their production. Chemical and physical analysis have been made as to underline the specificities of the cuerda seca technique of decoration and to show some evolutions in the know-how. The exchanges and the uses of those ceramics have been investigated especially its use as a support of expression

Full textThis study intends to rase the problem of violence in Parisian university world from the XIVth to the middle of the XVth c. The university world in this work is understood as a totality of masters, students and servants who were legally linked to the studium. We propose to examine the evolution of the phenomenon taking account of the troubled character of the political context which was due to the Hundred Years War, the civil war and also to the Schism. This study aims at highlighting the phenomenon of violence as significant to the identity of the university population. The analysis of varied historical sources ranging from the normative documents and didactic treaties to judicial data and chronicles, allows to reveal a large range of violent practices concerning the world of the studium of Paris
